this time last year I was . . . .
. . . .living in Chicago
. . . . hating my job
Did you get it?
Found an 8
is it the 8 for 55?
I keep seeing ashtray...
yup
I got an 8 for 55, a work of MJ.
found a second 8 for 55
27 for 257. I'm outtie.
currently at 55 - 621
52-621. no 2nd 8.
Is there a second 8 - I have the MJ one.
there's the Mj one, and a 5/8 combo
and a related 6
up to 69 words I think I'm at the point where getting new words is like pulling teeth
1x9
43 here 1x9 and 1x 8
2x8
ooh found 2nd 8.
is the 9 a combo?
69 words 4.88 1000
9 is a compound word
wow! 66 & only 769
double wow! - 73 for 855
thanks - got the 9
81/1078 cant find the second 8
Not gonna do it - not gonna spend all night laying here, looking at the grid. I have only 61 for 713, with two 8s. So far, no 9s, but I'll think about it, while I'm away. See y'all tomorrow. <I can stay away - I know I can - I know I can...>
Night Christine lol
Almost gone.... Can't quite make SQUIRREL... and I know people who mess around with strips of paper, and they call themselves -----ers - so why won't the board accept it??? Just thought of another word, then I really am gone - yes, really. g'nite.
95/1240 still only 1 8 lol
69/819. sleeping, no 9.
mellowmasher - the 8 is related to a 5 for 14
The 9 is a compound word of a 3-letter and a 5-letter, and it makes a circle in the grid :)
I'm off to bed too, getting too tired to use my brain :)
oops! - the 8 is related to a 5 for 16! Can you tell I need to go to bed :)
Thanks for the clues found a second 8 but it doesn't come from a 5 for 14 so guess theres another
oops posted at the same time and yep do have a 5 for 16 cheers have a good sleep
At 01:36 am majenwen said... The 9 is a compound word of a 3-letter and a 5-letter, and it makes a circle in the grid :) bulldog thinks momentarily and then notices 3+5= 8 ? before I went into music I was a math major.
105/1350 sitting here thinking im doing well until lawyer1 or bulldog tell me different lol
a 4 and 5 sorry!
Oh, xcome on ... you didn't really believe I could leave, knowing there's a 9 out there, calling to me.
58 words 5.38 1124 Ok so far but no nine.
Christine you will regret it lol
I'm in law school, who needs math? (But was an EE major for a year in college until I realized I hate math)
There is a musical seven that means one who rapidly ocilates between a note and its upper neighbor.
My dad is has a degree in electrical engineering and owns a dry cleaners.
I have 4x7
I actually have that 7, although I was thinking of Star Trek
Good, me too! :)
The old star trek episode that has all the fully gerbal monsters that hate klingons?
Anyone know how many there are today?
AHA!! thanks to Majenwen's clue, I have the nine- I'd tried all kinds of combos, there it was, hiding from me. I already have the musical 8.
A species in TNG and DS9, especially in DS9
I never watched the old ST, although I think I may have seen that ep, don't remember much, I was too young at the time
Found another 7 so 5 so far
It was titled the trouble with tribbles and I can't think of the species in tng or ds9
more specifically: a character - Dax
The musical 8 would be an album by Michael Jackson when he was still mostly black.
Was a tribble a little thing that sat on the wing of the plane? DD used to watch the show, and I seem to remember something that chirruped??
Oh thanks bulldog it was just looking at me but couldn't see it lol
too right I wonder why they ever killed off jadzia, she was a cutie
Don't recall - I think I stopped watching by that point
the wing of the plane? It's a starship a plane would experience a rapid and catastrophic implosion in space and no the tribbles were pets that reproduced very quickly and ate all the food in the enterprise until Captain Kirk trasported them to the klingon ship.
didn't the tribbles become enemies of the empire?
I don't bevieve you stopped watching. if you remember her species of origin. I saw every episode twice and I didn't remember.
Tribbles were only mentioned in that one episode and you can bet the klingons killed off the ones in their ship.
Do the brits still use the pound or are they using the four in the grid?
I remembered caused I liked the concept :)
Is there a difference between a quid and a pound?
must have been a joke my dad made then
you want some huge parasite that takes over your personality and lives in your belly? eewww!
Joke, I not see joke.
thought it was an interesting story line - many potential problems
He liked that ep, not sure if I remember him describing it or actually seeing it...think he was describing the orginal so I would understand the remake in the DS9 ep
What remake tribble or the dax. they are mutually exclusive.
115 words and stuck
remake of the tribble ep
Tribble weren't in TNG or DS9. you must have caught a bit of it or heard about it somewhere. it is probably the most famous episode from the original.
I still haven't found the nine yet. I need a clue. I will pay back double.
A quid was the slang term for a pound, back when I lived in UK - been gone for almost 44 years, and the money has changed since then.
In DS9, they went back in time to enterprise during the tribble epidemic
The planets name is good for at least three words.
what is the entemology of the quid. could a pound buy a squid or something. really brits and their english.
hot dang you are right I must have intentionally missed that episode because it is ruins what was an excellent OG Star trek episode.
Ummm -- maybe we watched Twilight Zone or that other show, that was so similar. Back in the 60s, the rumor was that TZ was fiction(!), and this other show (whatever was it called?) was baseed on fact - aliens and things found in NM.... Perhaps this little creature sat on a wing, on TZ??
K, I'm really off to bed now :0 At least I don't have work or class tomorrow!
During the filming of Twilight Zone the movie there was a terrible accident with a helicopter and one of the main actresses and two children were beheaded. No lie. Truth is not always stranger but usually more horrible.
I think that was Vic Morrow?? Just this week, a man, Gil Something, who was on the set that day, died, and the news programs rehashed the accident. How did you make QUID or SQUID on this grid??
At 02:04 am bulldog said... Do the brits still use the pound or are they using the four in the grid?
117 words 4.85 1581 Still no nine
right you are about Vic Vic Morrow died tragically in the early morning hours of July 23, 1982 while filming a scene for "Twilight Zone: The Movie". As he waded across the Santa Clara River carrying two Vietnamese children, a helicopter crashed beside them. All three actors were killed-- Morrow and one of the children were decapitated.
I was seven and didn't remember clearly
Lol the brits still use the pound it hasn't got us yet
But thanks you did give me another 4
I just got the nine :)
120 words how many are there in this grid?
I keep finding them I bet over 150 126 words 4.85 1734
I'm keeping such a low profile, sitting quietly in my corner, you're probably unaware I'm still here. Does anyone have an idea of the numbe of words/points we're chasing? Have two 8s and one 9, so far.
Christine I thought you had gone to bed lol
Italian money 4
127/1611 must be missing some of the longer ones
Mellowmasher - perhaps you've not noticed, we have the Queen Mary in Long Beach CA... the Queen Elizabeth on the east coast... and London Bridge in Arizona.... and I'm lurking in my corner (a la spiders). We're biding our time, then we strike. Incidentally, about 35 years ago, we changed our monetary thing to the decimal system.... I learned to count in threes (not twos) because there were 12 pennies in a shilling... still do it. Damned decimal system - too much like the rest of the world.
how many furlongs does your car get to the hogshead?
I like the pound I think most brits do I do think it will change (against public opinion)
hey, bull, I don't even have 100 words yet.
Hold it.....let the trumpets be heard....I finally hit 100 words.
I truly intended to stay no more than an hour -- then the subject of a 9letter word came up, and then, and then... Yesterday I came to the grid as soon as it opened, and except for a 2hour nap during the day, I stayed here... I had intended to catch up on my sleep.
No one has "One Hundred Words" I mean its three words for one and you can't spell it in the grid and it would be 15 letters long.
I really wan't to spell lemur
want does not use an apostrophe
wan;t wan,t wan.t wan:t....Personally, I would go with the apostrophe.
The School I work at is starting up soon here and our Mascot is the bulldogs. I had Bulldog as a nickname 12 years ago. The school is only 6 years old. I knew when I moved the thousand miles that I was going to the right place. Any tips for the teachers? How do I keep it fun and meaningful? and not a 4 for 7 that is the pit of despair.
What kind of Law do you practice?
Having attained perfection, I saw no need to continue to practice. Why is it that all professionals practice their trade? Iwould prefer that my physician practice on others before plying his/her trade on me!
If nothing else practice will pad the time clock. big bucks.
Actually, bull, I am semi-retired. I am an arbitrator for the NYSE and the NASD, amongs other organizations. In addition, I occasionally accept assignments as an expert witness.
Money Lawyer. I like and respect that.
No messy ethical dilemmas every one is a criminal.
how did u read "criminal" into anything I wrote?
I didn't i was just joking.
I spend more time doing pro-bono work than I do getting-paid work
I mean a criminal lawyer might have to defend someone they know to be guilty and a prosecuting attorney may have to do their best to convict someone they are unsure of their guilt. but an attorney who deals with capitalism in the abstract only knows that their client is out to make money. if you believe the mediaor the government(progressive taxes) making money is inherently evil, therefore morally criminal.
All this male bonding ~ it's so sweet :P
I have stated publicly from the limited amout of contact that we have had that you are an honorable and trustworth person who is a fine and upstanding member of the babble community.
Lawyers get a bad rap and they don't deserve it anymore than teachers.
Mellowmashe -- I've not lived in UK for a long, long time, but my family is there. Most people of my age or older (thee's a few of them, out there) don't like the "new" money, because we've never consideed ourselves to be Europeans, and we like being different, being us! My Dad says "Our politicians are Europeans, not the people.".
I could never be a criminal attorney for that reason. As an arbitrator, however, I render a decision, like a judge. Also, an arbitrator is not bound by the formal rules of evidence, so I have a tendency to let into evidence what might not make it into a trial. It generally favors the less sophisticate.
My little browser is economising - not using the letter R!!
Thank you, eyzzz for assuming I am male.
You get to be judge and jury. wow that may work with a good person but what if you are feeling peckish or one client is a jerk
No one ever thinks I not male. I am really a sweet guy and have been described as a big teddy bear.
Thank you, eyzzz for assuming I am male. Don't get your panties all a wad. I got that impression from your previous conversations, not because of your job. Sorry if I was wrong.
Arbitration is not flawless. There are arbitrators who should be banished, parties who lie and lawyers who haven't the foggiest idea as to how to proceed. However, just like our legal system, it might not be perfect, but it's the best around.
eyezzz....quit before you get in deeper. Now you are assuming that I wear panties! ;)
Our system is certainly better than any other I know, I am not very familiar with any other system though. I have never asked which gender Lawyer is It dosen't matter.
It is a typical american conceit. about believeing we have everything correct. I prefer to step back and look and make an educated decision. However that is the basis of our government. We took that suited us best from others and invented where necessary and got rid of most of the gross inbred stupidity. however the country is aging and senility is creeping in.
I saw that you did not say that we are perfect I meerly state that as generality. I do not want to put words in your mouth.
I agree about the arbitor being a good method but you must awknowledge that it is imprecise, but so are people.
Basically, the system is still a good system. We just need help selecting those who enact, administer and interpret it.
I should sleep, I ALWAYS get talkative when I am tired. have since I was a child.
David Eddings wrote " It is all fine and good to put the world in the hands of the perfect man, but what happens when that man gets a bellyache"
That depends on one's definition of "imprecise".
When that man gets a bellyache, he farts and a new law is enacted!
Imprecise perhaps inconsistant depending on the arbitor
Lawyer -- you have 100 words? Will you share your stats/points count?? puhleese.
An arbitor is not bound by rule of law as each case is individually weighed against its own merits and not necessarily against a standard.
As every case cannot have possibly be foreseen there can be no definitive rubric there fore the arbritration method must have inconsistancies and therefore is imprecise.
I took a lot of philosophy and social science classes in college not law.
Christine...it was more than 2 hours ago when I had 100 word. I hope you did not expect me to stay there forever.
Good night all I have pontificated enough for any one person.
128/1625 can someone tell me what im missing ax6 cx12 dx5 ex14 hx11 ix3 lx8 mx10 ox2 qx3 rx19 sx10 tx15 ux4 yx6

135/1804 Oh why, why do I spend all day here lol

does anyone know what the first letter in the 9 word is? please help

The 9 begins with H
Got the 9 for 84. Giving us the 1st letter gave away the word. Thanks muchly. I also found MJ's 8 for 55 but am missing the other one. Any hints? Thanks.
Funny.......I had both words in the 9 separately but didn't think to connect them.
Thanks, Berekah! ;-)
you're welcome, Boo ;-)
GGRR!! I keep seeing ASTROID and I can't get past it. Darn video games.

marigold are you here?
chaz are you here?
Am I talking to myself? Is anyone else playing?
i'm playing--just found this site today. Not sure I believe there are as many words as you all say, though =)
I'm playing, but I just got back on about 5 minutes ago. I'm working on the 9 ltr H compounder.
i've been working on the list mellowmasher posted. i am missing a bunch, but i have an extra m...
MULHER I know you have the 2 words that make up the 9 letter combo. Just connect them.
is there any way to know how many words there really are? how do you know when your done?
you're, i mean. eww, hate when i do that.
Minski - you specialize in ESP of Babble lists, eh? I'll look thru my list. Thanks.
Got it. I would not have thought of putting those two words together. I thought they would be used as two seperate words.
yes perwinkle I am here
parsec - Star Wars?
sure, from starwars. also just a nifty word. don't have a guess on yours though.
141 words 4.79 1834 This is my breakdown: ax6 cx14 dx5 ex14 hx14 ix3 Lx9 mx12 0x3 qx3 rx21 sx11 tx15 ux5 yx6 That's all I can find for now. Good luck and have fun. I'll be back on Monday!
How come it does not take ecrue. Isn't this a color.
there's no e
MULHER You are always one of the high scorers and always beat me so I just figure that you must have them because they were 2 of the 1st words I found, I just never thought to connect them.
thanks, xena
well, I'm stuck at 113/4.79/1485, but i figure that's decent for a first go at it. Maybe i'll have some time after dinner...
HINT: I found all the Y words but only by using the a2z wordfinder. I don't know a single one of them and still don't.
The 2nd 8 for 55 and it's 2 related cousins just jumped off the board at me and I can't believe I didn't see them before now.
almost 5pm time to go home 78/1052 later kids
mulher you still on?
Mulher- you've got mail....when did you decide to come home?
M words- Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? 8, 18, 6, 14, 24, 36, 6, 6, 6, 24, 6 thanks!
Hey, I'm back Tol. As far as I know, I'll be driving back Mon. I haven't opened everything in my email yet, but I did see that I got the one on travel dates from you.
Minski - Oddly enough, I had not found the second half of the 85 pointer until just a few minutes before you posted your first post to me. Thanks for thinking of me as a high scorer. I haven't looked to see whether I am or not. I have yet to finish a puzzle. Yesterday's, I was 20 short.
If only I could make astro....
Missing 1 A, 1 I, and 2 Us... Any clues?
Beyond the 3 Q words themselves, has anyone used the QU within any words? So far, I have just one like that.
3 q words? I only have one (and also one where the q is within a word) - any hints?
Well, I only know the definiton of one, a writing instument. But the other two I can only tell you that they are QUI words. Good luck. And I now have two words with the QU used within the words.
Oh, both of the words that I have the QU within, are two of the QU words, with one letter added at the begining of them. Hope that helps.
Thank you, mulhermujer, I found them. :)
Ha! Got one of the 8's for 55. Nicccccccccce....
Does anyone have any clue to the Y words? I've got nothing...
The Y is the only letter that I don't have a word for yet...
Oh, this might be interesting to some. Thru this puzzle I have learned my second anagram. My first is: ear, are, and era. The one is this puzzle has four letters and makes 5 different words. Kinda cool I think.
Me thinks I am posting to myself....
mulher see my 3:54pm post
thanks for the hint re: the 2 words containing QU. I actually already had one of them and didn't realize it.
I think I know your second anagram, but I'm not getting the fifth word from it. Perhaps you should reveal it tomorrow.
Whoops, never mind. I got it!
I need some help with the A words. Can somebody provide me with some hints? Please?
I only have 3 A words.
HOw many 8 letter words are there? I only have one. :(
I have no i (eye) words. Any hints?
Correction, I have only one i word.
I have 2 8s and 1 9
I have only one "eye" word and it isn't in the babble dictionary. I didn't know it was a word.
I have only 1 A word. I'm missing at least 40 words. This might be a long night.
My 8 begins with T. Minski, would you please tell me what your second 8 starts with?
The other 8 begins with the E in the upper left corner of the grid. There is an 8, a 6, a 5 all with the same base word and once you find them you will kick yourself. I did. It took me all day to find them and I felt like a total idiot when I did.
Minski, Thanks so much. I will look for them. :)
MInski, I must be an idiot then. I just can't see it. I am also tired.
Oh man, I can't believe it took me this long to see that. I had the 5 and the 6, and yet here I am entering things like euroclue...
Hello MInski, I got the 8 letter E word. I already had the 5 and 6 letter word. Thanks for your help.
minski, thank you for the clue to the 8 for 55. I can't believe it took me this long to find it.
majenwen -- Did you get the missing M? It's a 6/24 that comes after the 18 in alpha-order. It means environment or setting.
I think we have different M 6 for 24s. I have a series of 4 words (4,5,6,7) all with the same base 4 letter M.
I'm done. 93/1249 nighty-night
there are three Ms 6/24
fixitfmly - thanks, got the M, now for all the rest...
There are 142 words.
27/338 not bad for starting at 18 minutes to go
