whew! FW and off to bed, good night all
good morning all
Hi Sprite, it's not quite morning here yet... ;)
*hugs Kam* A very good night to you then. Here, it is 8.25 am. Well into morning. I was up at 4 am, ughhh.
Uggh! That's far far FAR too early! It is now 11:26PM here
wow, you still have all night ahead of you to sleep in :)
Are you doing ok? Yes, I have a good night's sleep ahead (I hope!)
I am okay. Not great, but hanging in there. How about you? And your husband?
I'm doing quite well, DH is a bit stressed and tired...we saw the neurosurgeon yesterday. Things are moving along well for his surgery, but I know deep down he is scared of it
I don't blame him. Surgeries are scary and ones like this even more so. But at least you know he is in good hands.
There are always risks...but 5% failure is minimal risk, and a 95% chance of not getting worse off is so amazing!
those are very good odds
I think so. I'm scared too, though.
of course you are. Your beloved going into a risky situation and you not having any influence on it at all... having to trust the surgeon and the others to get him through safely... not easy to bear. Know that we are here for you.
I think all will work out just fine...loved the surgeon... Most neuro guys are so odd, but this man had an excellent personality, great eye contact, and is a good communicator
It's good to know I can pop in most any night (for me) or morning (for you) and chat a bit.
absolutely. And if you need any of us when we are not here, just drop us an email and we'll get back at you as soon as we can. I know I can speak for Rose here too.
Thanks! I appreciate that, and I know you gals will help hold me up if I need help. Hugs!
we will. That's what babblers do :) *hugs back*
interesting, that the neurosurgeon is such a communicative guy. Most surgeons in general aren't.
ikr!
I was almost shocked...definitely surprised! Eye contact, nice handshake, no rush, ready to answer questions...amazing!
when I had the gastric bypass, the surgeon was a weird duck. The interest on the other hand is one of the most social people I've ever met. Sense of humour too.
wow, that sounds so good, Kam. I am so glad. That makes the whole thing a little easier on you both.
interest??? Make that internist
I'm sure they're trained as part of the program to make folks comfortable with brain surgery. All of the people I have dealt with there are so understanding and helpful, it's like I walked into an alternate universe of people who actually care!
We have just hit the jackpot with doctors lately...after years of me running into a*holes, lol! DH deserves the best
I guess they have learned over time that it really pays to have more time and attention for their patients and family. In the long run, people will do better when they really trust their doctors.
I am glad, Kam. Having to deal with asshole doctors brings so much extra stress. This is great. And just what the both of you need.
I think we just managed to stumble into a special research program. They don't charge us anything, and we get discount lodging near the facility! That's unheard of in the US
wow, that is not that common here either. Amazing!
And their success rate is better when they take better care of their patients...so, win/win!
exactly
over halfway and just one 6, nothing bigger! Must be some kind of record in biggie suckage, even for me.
I found out about them from another woman on FB - there are a few groups for PD wives only. Great support for us, the wives, and great info sharing!
that is so great.
I'm having a pretty good go at this grid - only 6 left...
I am not doing well with this grid. Didn't do great on yesterday's either. Guess I am tired.
It's that time of year...post holiday let-down, and resting up. I'll be glad when we hit a rest up period again - the testing DH has to go thru is hard and fast - and lots of trips far from home. Another weekend is coming up, hopefully you can rest up!
must be very exhausting, and extra hard when you are not well to begin with. yeah, nothing much planned for the weekend. A shift for my volunteer job, bit of housecleaning and such.
I hope you have a nice weekend! Relax!
definitely intent to. Lol, our daughter is housesitting for my sister, and she has the use of my sister's car. She is driving all over the Netherlands. She is about to arrive here, pick up the dog and take him to Nijmegen, which is almost at the other side of the country. She is gonna walk in the woods there, with him, and a friend who lives there.
I just had to be horrible - the cat brought in another mouse...still alive. Poor little thing, it's going to sleep in the freezer. in a baggie. The last two got loose in the house, no more. Now I feel ill, sigh. DH slept through all the noise
aw poor Kam :((( that is a nasty thing to have to do. The cat loves you very much, that he/she leaves you such a precious gift. But ughhhh how horrible.
Sounds like fun for your daughter - Caya? I'm not sure I have names correct...
you do, my girl is Caya.
He can keep his gifts outside, or learn to do them in - we're on an acre, so cats are supposed to get rid of rodents, not let them loose inside the house! ugh...shiver
Caya is a very pretty name. Is there a history with the name? I've not heard it before.
I'am afraid it is what cats do. They show their attachment to you that way. Not fun :(
I know, have always had cats, just not one quite like Buster, lol! He's crazy. He cleans DH - as in stealing earrings and trying to steal the necklace DH wears.
we were considering calling her Isis, after the goddess of fertility. Then my husband came across the name Caya, which is related to Gaia, mother earth. We liked that even better. So now she is Isis Caya, with Caya as her usename. We considered Caya Isis, but decided that kind of sounded like an illness, lol
he sounds like quite the character! I love it when pets are like that.
He is THE character of our cat family! I'll email you my fave pic of the gang.
oh please do! I'd love that.
I love the Gaia connection, beautiful choice!
thank you :)
if you like, I can send you a link to Caya singing one of her songs
Would love that!!
this is a song she wrote for a friend of hers. His girlfriend was suicidal and blaming him. https://tinyurl.com/y8q5pubu
her hair is short now though
I'll check it out when DH isn't sleeping 10 feet away!
hehehe good idea.
She's very pretty!
*proud mama nod* I agree :)
Well, I finished up the puzzle, need to hit the sack earlier than usual...I always stay up too late! Will email you.
lovely, looking forward to reading it. Sleep well, dear one. *hugs*
definitely time to list

Good morning all. Brr, brr, brr. Here it is -21C and the wind chill makes it feel like -30. I am sitting in my apartment wearing a fleece jacket and a scarf. Too cold to even have a shower. But, it is supposed to get better.
Shivering right along with you. Here it is 9, feels like -4. It is supposed to get better in a few days. 40's and 50's. Whee! That will feel balmy compared to this.

morning nan
Don't you hate it when you're in a really foul mood and can't put your finger on why?
could be dysthymia if it is chronic...it's a milder form of depression....you can be cranky, out of sorts for no reason....
That's interesting pen - I was diagnosed with depression about a year ago. It usually just leaves me feeling worthless and VERY quiet, but today I'm spoiling for an argument lol which is SO unlike me - I wouldn't say boo to a goose!
well being irritable is also a symptom of depression....
medication can help...
then i'm depressed all the time!
well it is a chronic condition... ;o)
True but I've never suffered grumpiness with my depression. It may just be one of those days, hopefully I'll be full of cheer tomorrow
I'm feeling the same way, worzel. I think it is cabin fever here.
well if the problem continues or recurs often, you might want to talk to your doctor about it...
I feel for you Bea - it's no fun feeling grumpy is it lol?
If you ask my family, they would tell you I'm grumpy all the time. =)
worzel - think it is the weather!Doesnt seem to have stopped raining since before christmas - except when it was snowing!
I'm grumpy enough today that I have turned my phone off. I don't want to deal with anyone!
lack of sleep....and poor sleep....can also contribute to grumpiness....
may i do a shameless self promotion here?
The weather doesn't bother me too much. I know a lot get S.A.D but I can cope with long summer nights or short winter ones. I do apologise to everybody if I've bought the mood down
Go for it Shirlockc
Start the new year by reading a short story! mine! i'm published in this anthology: http://amzn.to/2AwIFFd

it's got words and it's what we here at babble love, words!
it's not a problem, worzel....
nice, shirl!
I'll be back in a bit folks. I'm away to get myself a brandy! (Don't panic, I'm not a heavy drinker - I usually have one or two brandies a year so I think I've earned one!!) Lataz folks xx and thanks for listening xx

It's bad! Makes taking the dogs out very hard!
still 15 to go here, and hey there lyn :)
Didn't think about that
Hi Mool
My wife wants to get a dog, until I point that you have to walk it in the winter :)
You just need one with long legs so they don't disappear in the snow
well, we get the cold, but generally the smowfall is on the smaller side
I remember getting over 2 feet of snow one storm when I lived in Pennsylvania
my wife though is more averse to the cold
she grew up in Miami
maybe a cat then - Abyssinian are very doglike in nature
and because they are hunters often recommended to be kept indoors and never outside
Yay - found my last 7
Yeah, we have three cats
yay for finding all the 7s
Am sure the 3 cats would love having a dog in the house to beat up
yeah, our babysitter brought her dog over, and one of the cats (they're less than 6 months) put him in his place

A half time budget and program manager job. Pretty much what I do now with fewer spinning plates and part time - and 8 minutes from home.

Thanks for inviting Featherbee!
there you are!
so let me know if you get stuck!
I'm doing it now too, but am only two words in, lol
welcome, jenn....
well i am heading out....goodnight all....
jenn, sometimes the grids can have 300ish words
night pen
on smaller grids, people finish them early and don't hang out much. on bigger grids, you'll see more people chatting.
That’s crazy!
some people hang out just to help clue others who are finishing
I went through a phase where I had to finish the whole grid every day. Then life got in the way.
amen to that
but ugh, i'm so depressed
hi hursh!!!
you ok?
no
*** finito *** last word CU 5/14 - second day in a row with no list
any clues needed?
congrats teach!
what's wrong hursh?
teaching is too hard
are you just starting or are you a "veteran"
just starting
what do you teach
4th/5th grade
both?
split grades are tough positions
Welcome aboard Jenn
yeah, it's a real small school, so, i've got the entire 4th and 5th grade
i didn't realize how much harder it would be, yeah, with two grades
I taught 4/5 for 8 years. It is a tough combo but a great age. I’m sorry you’re having a hard time....What’s the main struggle?
do you have any mentor teachers assigned to you or is there someone in your building that you can feel close enough to to talk with them
holy cow, that would be tough
My son was in a a2nd/3rd grade combo class when he was in second grade and it was really, really good for him.
Thanks!
i have a new mentor teacher, a retired teacher, yeah, it didn't get assigned until more recently
split grades are twice the preparation for a teacher
and today the admin was talking about like, how in 4th and 5th grade the kids should still be 'shielded' from stuff
and the first few years are HARD anyway, to get everything in place and ready. I can't imagine starting with two grades.
which is pretty much the opposite of my entire teaching philosophy
talk with that person and let them know what is happening and hopefully they can make some suggestions. sometimes just knowing that there is someone right there to help can make it feel a little better
Hope you get the help you need hursh. That sounds tough.
and then classroom management is just so darn hard
as a veteran teacher, i can tell you it does get easier, but you need to be able to survive the first few years. yep, classroom management is definitely an art.
the admin are going to come in and see how things are to help me figure out the management things. but i feel ashamed to need that.
"Shielded from stuff?" What does that mean? Don't kids live in the real world?
classroom management, I think, is the hardest thing for all new teachers. I used to supervise student teachers for the university and that was often the critical issue for these "new" student teachers
I got a book from this website a few years ago that may be helpful: https://consciousdiscipline.com/
i had mentioned that santa isn't real, off the cuff, and apparently that was very not ok
oh i have books up the wazoo
ohhhhhhh shucks, that's a tough age for that
my fourth grader hasn't admitted he doesn't believe, he's in a gray zone for it
that's the problem, there's too much info, too much advice, too many strategies, it makes me dizzy. i need a "do these three things, period."
never feel ashamed of asking for help - be glad that they are there to offer you help. I taught for msny yers and supervised for many years, and there were still particular groups that challenged me to the limits - even after many years of experience.
Oh, gosh. I see a whole new generation of perfect snowflakes emerging.
he's let slip comments that tell me he knows, but he won't come out and say it. they like to keep the magic going for a little longer at that age.
in my family santa was just not a big thing. we didn't care. i don't remember ever actually believing in santa. it was just another fairy tale, like jack and the beanstalk.
do these three things: learn about your students. connect with them. be consistent.
yeah but i am having a real hard time being consistent, cause i'm absent-minded.
i forget who has had a warning already and needs the next step
I don't know how teachers do it. If I was in charge of a classroom, chaos would rule because I would try to be everything that my teachers were not.
i had a kindergartner this year start a debate with some other kids that he wasn't real. I pulled her aside and said "some kids believe in him, and some don't, and that's ok. you don't have to believe in him, but do me a favor, and don't try to correct those who do." or something along those lines.
yeah in K-1 i realize the kids will generally believe
4th is a hazy area for belief
i figured in 2-3 is when they find out the truth, by 4-5 they know. but apparently not.
get a system of writing it down. I was in sp ed where we had to document lots of "stuff" and you learned techniques of how to position charts around the room to tally things throughout the day
nope, not all of them yet
well, learn and move on. don't beat yourself up over it.
so i tried to start that wv, and then the admin said they don't want it up where everyone can see it. but if i track it privately on a paper i keep with me, then how do my aide and i BOTH use it?
definitely move on - I have been retired ten years but I remember "years ago" saying the "wrong" thing about global warming and heard about it from one of the parents
i find what works best for me is highlighting the positive in my room. i also look at misbehavior as teaching moments. i taught 4th my first year, but then switched to K.
but the main thing is, if they want me to shield them in general, i have been doing the exact opposite. i don't see any point in teaching them history at all if i am not honest about how violent and awful much of it has been.
some of the sp ed teachers (and their aides) wore wrist counters. wear an apron with lots of pockets and keep a note pad chart for each. If it is in your pocket - or even on your desk - it is not publically available for all to see
the main thing i want to do is tell kids the truth. so if they want me NOT to, it's like... might as well shut me down completely.
it's a hard balance, between being truthful, and not scaring them
right, well, i'm trying to give them the tools to deal with it as i tell them things
that's good
i honestly have started to think that elementary students should perhaps not have science or social studies at all.
do you ever have opportunities to go visit other classrooms to observe?
as long as you can documnet what you say and back it up with other authorities. give them an ability tosee that there are differences in beliefs and to respect (not disparage) these differences.
i have two days of that this year, feather, had one in the fall and one coming up this month
excellent. i always loved being able to do that. I learn so much from watching others.
unfortunately, in our elementary grades they have basically eliminated a lot of science and social studies to just focus on reaing and math
trying to reach halfway before i get a list. at 50 found.
yeah but teach i'm more talking about like, FACTS. nobody questions that there was cannibalism in the donner party. but they don't say it in the book, even though they tell them ABOUT the donner party. and i'm like, either do not put the donner party in, or say the actual reason why it is famous.
and they actually seemed to be DIScouraging me from getting them to think and analyze at a higher level.
that they shouldn't be doing that until jr high
depends on if they're ready or not
well, i mean, that's where the scaffolding comes in
some are more ready than others, and i try to help give them what they need, whatever their readiness
if you can help them to become better in their higher level thinking, then I would think that would be encouraged
and they in fact have all seemed to be perfectly ready, and the only ones who aren't doing it successfully are the ones who are just not caring about their schooling
yeah i thought so too, teach.
even without having split grdes there will be some at different levels of thinking skills, but those at the higher levels can model it for others.
my most sensitive girl has turned out to be perfectly able to handle the ugly truths. the times she cries in class are the times she can't remember the definition of a word, or how to find the area of a rectangle, not when she finds out some awful historical thing.
i don't know what type of communityyour school is located in, but I always had to be very aware of the diverse backgrounds that my students came from - diverse nationalities, religious, family educational backgrounds. I was careful to avoid some topics. There are many other teaching moments that avoiding some is not really a problem.
well that's part of the thing - the diversity necessitates the truth to some extent. the kids whose heritage includes wrongs done to them by others in history deserve to have that acknowledged
i don't know how to study california or US history without saying that wrongs were done to native americans
i think that you could discuss how wrongs have been done to many groups throughout our history - German americans during the world wrs, Japanese Americans during the world wars, Muslims during the current times - we have singled out many groups at different times. I think it all needs to be balanced
right. but if they want me to teach it like the book teaches it, as if nothing was any big deal... then i don't want to teach.
If I were teaching a specific historical event such as the Trail of Tears, I would talk about the wrongs. But I would not point out wrongs that don't go with the events that I am teaching
they do go with the events i am teaching
help with the cr5 please?
but for instance, the social studies book will talk like this, "the US wanted to grow. the only ways to do that were to buy land or to get more through a war. so we had a war."
I never taught in high schools, but I would hope that the middle school and high school texts would discuss these things in more detail. With elementary school social studies, it is more to lay a foundation of a basic historical frmework
I have never seen texts that would say emotionally charged statements like that. They seemed to just present very factual historical - who did what, when and where
i saw the textbook statement as trying to BE not emotionally charged, trying to be matter of fact and talk like things are just "what happened" and no big deal.
CR 5 - CR + anagram of proun things that belong to us
and i'm like, BUT IT IS A BIG DEAL!
got it, ty
Hurshy - need to go, but I hope that you can feel better about your teaching. Find a co-worker that you can feel comfortable talking with. That's what often got me through the tough days - and someone to "brag" about the good days
thanks teach, see ya later
dr6 please?
wish i could be more help feather, i just haven't been finding words so much as just chatting
no prob, i'm moving down the list
i want to finish this one, and don't want to be up late, so am moving along as quick as i can.
wish i could give you good advice
go back in time 3 years and tell me to become a bookkeeper
awwww
or tell you to hang in there, it gets better?
i remember struggling my first years also. the first years often are a trial by fire.
if my private life were good maybe that would be easier
:(
i just don't have a whole lot good in my life, not much that makes life seem worth living
definitely look into the conscious discipline book. it's more of a philosophy of how to discipline that i've found aligns very well with the things i discovered for myself over the years.
i have one called "conscious classroom management" - sounds like it might be similar?
but i feel like i get the philosophies, i just struggle with implementation
possibly, not sure
well, the implementation for the conscious discipline isn't a "keeping track" kind of thing.
it's more about how you frame your classroom culture.
your earlier statement concerns me. do you struggle with depression or thoughts of suicide? I've been there. I lost a best friend to it. Let me know if I can help.
i have struggled with depression all my life, as well as anxiety.
do you have any particular ways to cope with it?
i'm on an antidepressant. switching to a more meaningful type of job was one of the ways i hoped to cope with it. years of therapy led me to that point.
my marriage sucks, i don't have close friends that i can really talk to much, certainly none local.
therapy is good. it sounds like you're under a lot of stress, which will make the anxiety worse. the first year IS stressful, no matter what.
are you still seeing a therapist? if not, i'd say go back, for sure.
i don't have time to right now. i don't even have time to keep my house clean.
scrabbler always tells me to talk back to the anxiety with truth. such as: this is my first year. I can't be perfect the first year. Teaching IS hard, but I can learn. Etc...
Just got back on. So sorry you are having such a hard time hurshy. I have been there. Email me if you want to talk.
I would highly suggest seeing if you can fit in the time. If nothing else, to have someone local you can talk to.
yeah, i mean, i can do that, and that's all well and good, but i need things in life that make me happy. currently, i have just two. one being my cats. and the other being something that may go away in a year.
Heck my house isn't clean either!!! I've learned to step over things and look the other way.
To get all Buddhist on you: the only thing that can make you happy is you. Other people/objects will always change. You are the only thing you can control. Sorry if I sound preachy, it's just something I've learned and am always having to re-learn, but it's a good truth.
if the only thing that can make me happy is me, then i really need to be suicidal.
no, no, the WRONG way I was trying to take you!!!
would you like to talk on the phone? i'm not very good at it, but i can listen pretty well.
thank you feather, but, i don't know that i have much else to say really.
1-800-273-8255 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline In case you need it.
As I said, I lost my best friend to suicide. Even if you're not to the point where you have a plan or anything, but just wish you could stop being here, please reach out. Call that line, or call your former therapist, or call somebody that may be able to help you. I want to help you right now, but don't really know how. I obviously can't make things instantly better.
When I had a miscarriage, and had several other factors that were stressful happening, I remember having that feeling of "I wish I just wasn't here anymore." It's awful. But there are people who can help.
i'm still here, working on the grid, if you want to chat more.
thanks feather
you're welcome.
my dad's the same way as me. he has pretty much wanted to commit suicide ... every day for as long as i can remember? i mean, maybe not in so many words, but basically. we have religious belief preventing us.
That's hard. I'm glad you have a belief that keeps you here. It doesn't make getting through each day any easier though, I'm sure.
wow. i just monkey-typed two of the super easy un words. didn't realize what they were until i was hitting enter.
yeah i've had that babble experience.

feather - i can't go back to MY therapist, i moved.
ty, feather
ohhhhhh, i see hursh.
dr word?
my school has a thing called EAP, employee assistance program...you can call that to get hooked up with a therapist, or other things you might need.
in retrospect, perhaps my husband should have held out for a job offer in the area. but it seemed crazy to turn down two good offers with no particular local ones on the horizon.
I get the impression a lot of places have EAPs
hurshy - I too have been where you are. When the best you can do is breathe, smile and walk, then that is what you do. It takes you from hour to hour, day to day, week to week and during this time your brain chemistry heals itself. Imagine that someone else has your problems. Treat yourself the way you would treat them. It works to be compassionate with yourself. Sending hugs and love
harpjane, the dr6 is another way to spell a period of dry weather
