one of my daughters (and her family) are visiting from vermont - they drove down to Yellowstone and Grand Teton and are coming back north today.

nice! how far of a drive is it?

I forgot, are you in Calgary?

8:16 am

i get why they wanted to see the US national parks, but they could have rafted and seen the animals less than two hours away *lol*

8:17 am

yes - it was a long drive for them, but they broke it up and stayed in a hotel half way down and up

lol. We liked Grand Teton better than Yellowstone and I feel like Grand Teton ain't got nothing on Banff.

I wanted to check out Glacier NP when we went to Banff but I think it was like a 6 hr drive.

8:19 am

they also spent one night in Glacier - beautiful waterfalls

8:19 am

i agree with you, but I'd stay out of banff, except to eat :)

8:19 am

when you were here, did you go to johnston canyon?

8:20 am

more than 6 hours to glacier - and then the drive to grand teton - with two kids in the car. ah, to be young again :D

oh, I didn't like the town of Banff. we stayed in Canmore, which I loved. we did go to Johnston Canyon and it was pretty crowded. we were there in Apr. which I think was the off-season.

Johnston Canyon and Lake Louise were the biggest crowds we saw.

8:21 am

I always have wanted to go to Jasper

8:21 am

if i'd known....

we actually drove through the town of Banff and were like, nope, and didn't even park.

8:22 am

i like canmore, too

8:22 am

banff used to be wonderful - commercialism and lots of foreign money

8:22 am

Is Jasper less crowded

I could live in Canmore if not for the fact that bears just roam the streets in town.

we didn't make it to Jasper

8:23 am

and moose, and cougars (and not the bedazzled kind)

we were on that Icefields Parkway and turned around when traffic was stopped. I think Jasper was north there, right?

8:24 am

heh - we occasionally have all three in calgary, too

8:24 am

yeah, you were almost there

8:25 am

well, they'll be here in a few hours - time to get moving. have a great day!

enjoy it!

hello all

hello

we moved my oldest son into his dorm for his first year of college yesterday. I'm having a little trouble not wondering every second if he's okay.

8:29 am

done that twice

wondering how many times I checked in with my mom the first week I was in college. probably none since it was long distance phone and no email.

8:45 am

As much as you are thinking and wondering about him, I can almost guarantee you that he is thinking about a lot of things, but home is not one of them. The first week of dorm living is fun for kids.

8:45 am

8:58 am

"Third Coast" is how the UW Milwaukee refers to it's architectural program.

9:02 am

I LOOKED IT UP AND IT SAID IT WAS THE COASTLINE OF mICHIGAN

9:02 am

sorry for tha caps

9:04 am

It is, and I'm not sure which came first. But since I've lived on the east coast and the west coast, it seemed logical that I should write I'm now on (or close to) the third coast.

9:21 am

When I started there, I took buses (I lived in Hollis). But when my folks moved to Valley Stream, I had to drive. So I paid $800 for a '64 Rambler American.

9:24 am

I lived in Rockaway. It was subway and bus, grueling. Finally folks got me a car. I wanted to go to a residential college so I didn't have to sit around all day between casses.

9:25 am

Did you have to pay more in tuition when you moved to Valley Stream?

9:27 am

go 6/27 please?

9:27 am

I did my freshman year at Oyster Bay (part of the state system), but they requested that I not return for my sophomore year (oops). I'm not sure about the tuition cost. My mom and dad promised me 4 years, like they did my brother, so I only had to foot the bill for that last 1/2 year. And I don't remember what the cost was, but it couldn't have been much more.

not many people know Johanne's sister's name was Aching

11:38 am

haha

11:38 am

people would ask Johanne's mother if that were her daughter and she'd say.. yes she is my Aching Bach

11:38 am

Her middle name was Aching. Her first name was Ohmy

11:39 am

lol molly right on target

11:39 am

direct quote frommy mother

11:40 am

We are such a refined group!

11:40 am

Well at least we are cultured enough to discuss German composers.

11:41 am

like sugar we are

11:41 am

that reminds me of BR's old tired joke molly.. why did people hear music at Beethoven's gravesite

11:42 am

why?

11:43 am

he was decomposing

11:43 am

It was just Beethoven decomposing. Horrible joke.

11:43 am

*sigh*

11:44 am

I don't miss those same old tired jokes, told over and over again.

11:44 am

(you asked for it)

11:54 am

me neither molly... not at all

11:58 am

Especially the over told one about the perfect martini and the moment of silence for Antonio Benedetto Carpano (the inventor of Vermouth)

12:00 pm

Apparently i missed that one. I tried to stay off babble when he was around

12:00 pm

I am off to work now enjoy your day everyone

12:42 pm

and isn't the joke that the music was backward?

12:44 pm

No, the punch line was that he was decomposing.

12:49 pm

yeah, I thought it was "why did people hear backward music at Beethoven's grave?" "because he was decomposing". I'm not saying it makes sense, that's just the way I heard it.

12:58 pm

hello friends. any southern US players today? Have an ignorant yankee question....

1:02 pm

What is the ignorant Yankee question?

1:03 pm

i have just learned of something called "pimento cheese" -- as far as I knew, pimentos were the little things in olives, and that was about it. If one does not make pimento cheese at home, how does one precure it? In a jar? From a deli?

1:05 pm

You can make it at home, there are recipes on line. You can buy it in a jar in the store as well. It is cheese with the pimento from olives mixed in.

1:06 pm

Amazon sells it as pimento spread.

1:06 pm

is it good?

1:07 pm

It's okay on crackers and such. You have to develop a taste for it. I'm not a fan, but then, I don't care for olives.

1:18 pm

Howdillydoo, all.

1:19 pm

Yuck. Pimento cheese.

1:22 pm

I really don't like olives, so maybe I wont like pimento cheese. The recipes I read dont mention olives, just the pimentos

1:25 pm

there are no olives in pimento cheese...just cheese, mayo, pimentos in some combination. If you are in Texas, Central Market sells great pimento cheese.

1:26 pm

You want it made with real cheddar cheese...

1:26 pm

we just don't have it up here in the north.

1:27 pm

I didn't mean that there were olives in pimento cheese. Just that I am not a fan of olives, which include pimento.

1:27 pm

Many a southern child grew up eating pimento cheese sandwiches

1:29 pm

but it's a considered a nice food, yes? Not junky?

1:31 pm

Hmmm. I'd say junky, but I think it's one of those thing that people either love or hate.

1:33 pm

but there's no shame in giving kids pimento cheese sandwiches, right?

1:33 pm

Nah. Couldn't hurt them.

1:33 pm

are there any tion words?

1:34 pm

I would say junky too. But no more shame than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

1:34 pm

Agreed.

1:34 pm

It is junky if made with yuck processed cheese

1:34 pm

Not sure that real young kids would like it though.

1:35 pm

The Central Mkt kind is made with real cheese and a little bit of dill. Its really good

1:36 pm

thank you for helping me learn. I appreciate it very much
