Clues are up

there are two New York Yankee former managers in the grid tonight (for anyone playing name that baseball proper noun)....
oh come on - it won't take ribeye?
nbt, nbs, em 9
you mean 8?
and yeah, rasta. I was bummed
Yes, I meant 8 - my cat jumped on my keyboard.
I am seeing phantoms only at this point (repertoire! ephemera! tremble!) so think I should probably call it a nigh....
you mean night ?
That, too. Or ni9, as we will call it at this moment
LOL
And thanks for the 8!
yer welcome
Gidday from Australia

ding ding ding
I just reread one of the books, they are very comforting. the TV series is incredible
I only watched a few episodes, I need to pick it back up
I loved those books as a kid, I've read all of them so many times
my copies are bound by rubber bands! Do you know where the whole TV series can be found? thanks
I was watching it through a streaming service, I forget which one.

Weird word. That whole tile is weird words, except one
well done, odd word
those are not too strange, at least in academia
but I'm missing 5 es from down there so I bet you're right about the rest
and my phantom is ephemera
that's true
ohh, found some greeks too
well the ep words are strange to me
never mind, all the rest are greek boys lol
tile gray, thanks to my love of ancient Greece
Classics at University helps
I took a few courses too, and I was studying archeology when I was in University in Italy before moving to the US :)
Indiana mael
how interesting!
alas, our one trip to the Etruscan dig sites they made the freshies sleep outside so the thieves wouldn't come and snatch any artifacts
less Indiana Jones and more cold and damp
still happens, in spite of new security
Because that is such an appealing environment 😊
money money for the thieves though

I guess it's fun for the word wizards who are fluent in Greek
Name that shampoo brand
prell
Ding! Bea wins a lifetime supply of green shampoo
I can still smell that stuff.
yes, knowing those bottom e's are greek does nothing for me. you could say it's all greek to me.
greek boys
not that it helps much.....
Carla, I had to look most of them up
In what world is ribeye not excepted? That's just nonsense.
it is excepted
Not in enable
Merriam Webster lists it as two words
I got your joke, Carla 😊
thank you, molly🤣
btw, ribeye is my fave
Mine too.
I have two rib roasts in the freezer just waiting for the right occasion.
soberon: the king in a dry shakespeare comedy
was just thinking about accepted/excepted. weird how they sound the same but are kinda opposites.
classic english weirdness
physio no good, even though that's what the rest of the world calls a phyiscal therapist.
I've never called a PT a physio
that's why I said the rest of the world (not US)
if you watch international sports like soccer and tennis, you hear it a lot.
Carla, my mom has been having vertigo. She is starting PT next week.
good morning all....
hey, pen
ugh, glad you have found a PT for it.
pen!
Carla!....hi Bea...
I just got back from a few days at my mom's. she fell the other day and then has been really sick from a UTI. going back tomorrow night for a few more days.
that's too bad....it's nice that you can spend time with her....
my brothers both live nearby but they both have jobs. one of them has been able to work from home a lot.
well it's good that she has family around...
yep
ah I see.
I though you meant "rest of the world" other than enable
Hi all. Any clues for the 8?
just got here...
no idea, though I think it might be EP from the bottom.
It is em from bottom for sure. But otherwise i am not seeing it.
It's an em, and I'm trying hard to think of a clue!
If the S were in a different place there are a dozen words but i am stumped.
Half of what you file your nails with, plus Ms Ora
thanks, hydra. got it.
Who is ms ora?
ms. moreno for you older people
That's the 8. Add a vowel for the 9
No 9
There isn't a 9
was her maiden name ora?
i got the 7 and 8 from that clue...
Sorry, I mean 7 and 8.
Moreno?????chikita moreno?
or her new name?
think of Broadway's Ms. Moreno....
Actress ---- Tushingham
why ora though?
ora is a current pop singer, not related to moreno
that is a last name in Hydra's clue...
same first name
---- Ora is a singer/songwriter
Got it. Ty.
got it. googled it. sorry - I'm ignorant of current music
same here... i googled as well....
got the 7 and 8. What is that word? Never saw it before. Ty
we had ices in new haven with that name
Thx!
I googled too.
that's why I gave an alt one, harry, for old people like you😜
Latin plural. Weird word.
yes - moreno worked.
you've never seen a professor em*? they keep the title of professor even after retiring
I believe it refers to several. Such as the UAE which is a country.
that is a chain of ices, one of my soccer friends owned one in charlotte
they had some pretty wacky flavors
the 7 refers to a woman....
and no the E in UAE is for emirates
Off to brunch
brunch!
breakfast burritos?
UAE is Emirates. sigh
my daughter made pancakes this morning in the shape of hearts and bears
how cute is that!....
yum
Apparently Tyson chicken has heart shaped nuggets out now.
how not cute is that!... ;o)
They have dino ones
Kids would love them, but...ick.
my kids used to love another brand of dino nuggets
I'm a closet nugget eater.
I occasionally buy gluten free nuggets when I can't find tenders.
is that top corner E word ea, ei, or eo?
eo7 and I've never seen it before. Read the chat and went straight to morewords.
ok thanks
ooh....just monkeyed that....never seen it before either....
hypothetical chemical term.....right....
My monkeys never would've found that.
sometimes i get lucky.... ;o)
sometimes not... ;o)
;)
well it's always a good day to learn something!
phantom: obtain
Ethnic slurs once again allowed in grid. Dr. God should switch to a new dictionary.
dictionaries describe what words exist. they don't condone them, they just list them.
what slurs? haven't seen any yet. and is there a free word list they are all removed from that he could switch to?
I see one, but the first meaning that comes up isn't the slur. It's a type of tree or shrub.
name that proper noun! singer who, a meme tells me, lives alone in a castle with her cats
Enable is not a complete compendium of that words exist. But it validates miogynistic and ethnic slurs if they were valid words. In this case he4 and plural.
It's a goofy word list. We all seem to be in agreement on that.
It often allows cu4 and tw4. I don't know another meaning for cu4.
Champfit, good to know.
A professor has been disciplined for using a word that means stingy, but sounds like a racist word. So a legitimate word can not be used.
My point being I have no point
they are words. they exist. the other day some other word game told me "shit is not a word." well that's absurd. clearly, shit IS a word. the fact that humans are sometimes awful to each other in words is awful. but trying to pretend they don't exist doesn't really help anything, any more than trying to pretend founders of the US didn't own other people and abuse them. enable is indeed goofy, but in general, i just don't believe that dictionaries "validate" the words they include. all they do is tell us that people use those words. do you think anyone would be stopped from using them if they were omitted from the dictionary?
I've never heard of he4. and it always allows cu4 and tw4, not just often. it doesn't pick and choose when it allows words. if it's on the list and in the grid, it is allowed. not saying I agree with what words are on the list, because I definitely don't agree with inclusions and exclusions all the time, but that's how the word list works with this website.
I meant always.
also, I recently heard that USC is not allowing the word "field" anymore because it's offensive to black people. WTAF? field is a legit word and all kinds of people have worked in fields over the years. my parents both worked in tobacco fields when they were young. how can you just decide that?
and what do you do if field is part of your name?
or your whole name
it would be interesting to know what the events were that led to that decision, hokie
I guess you're screwed
that's the problem, it's a slippery slope
i believe they are just not allowing it in the meaning of like "physics is my field".
yeah, I don't know. I just don't get how a legit word without being in an offensive context can be deemed offensive.
If the n word showed up in a grid, would that be OK? Rhetorical question. I am pretty sure it's not in Enable. It's a big jump from being annoyed about he4 and others like it to pretending that the founders owned slaves. Who said that? I just commented that I was uncomfortable with the word. I am glad to know it has another meaning. But you all are taking it way too far. The "field" argument is a logical fallacy -the one about taking an idea to its extreme. You can tell me usefully that he4 means something else. Using logical fallacies to make your point is not valid. The Slippery Slope Fallacy is another logical fallacy often used (if you can Mary a same sex partner, the next step is to marry your dog." That is what the "field" fallacy is.
i believe that we have indeed had the n word in the grid and it does count. "negro", however, does not. that's the part that makes enable weird and goofy.
kap, i was just mentioning the thing about slaves because SC has a proposed bill that schools would not be allowed to mention that George Washington owned slaves.
I think Negro is capitalized and that's the enable difference.
The last time I complained about this issue was seeing "jew" used as a verb. Someone argued that there was nothing wrong with implying that Jews are slippery about money. He4 is not as bad as to "hew" somebody.
USING the word is certainly bad. having it in a dictionary is not. that is the extent of my viewpoint. i don't use any of these words, and i basically don't use profanity either. the only point i, personally, was trying to make is that i do not think dictionaries validate words.
Jew somebody. OK harsh, I get it. When I hear he4 I think of Archie Bunker, because that was one of his favorite words.
i don't even know which he4 word you mean - it must be a slur i've never heard
Oh my gosh, that takes me back, Kap!
lol
That may be the last time I heard that word used, actually.
The n word that can't be used in an academic setting any more is niggardly. Not knowing what words mean is dangerous. If I had looked up he4 and seen it was a plant, I would not have reacted.
I have literally never heard of he4. I don't even know how it would be pronounced. I click on it and am told it is a bush. so I'm supposed to feel bad about entering it in a game?
Long e sound.
BBL for last 17.
nice job, still 49 left here. about to get ready for a bike ride in case I disappear...
Do dictionaries validate words? The dictionary is assumed to be impartial. It includes words like "sext" and many tech words. Your right about the validation part. But the other document that claims to have valid terminology is the Bible of Psychiatry, the DSM. It changes meanings and diagnoses every few years, thus validating the subjectivity.
lol, that's a whole other kettle of fish
i don't think there needs to be any correlation between one's views on dictionaries and one's views on the DSM
unfortunately morewords is merely a list, not a dictionary. Major difference.
I'm not arguing with you- I'm thinking about it. I think if an historically offensive word has a completely different meaning (shrubbery) then I learn something.
yeah, i think that none of us is speaking in a spirit of anger with each other, we're all thinking :)
Would you use the word "niggardly" in a classroom?
morning all
That's new for us, hurst.
was reading over the chat and saw a
niggardly has a completely different meaning unrelated to the n word. but I guess we have to dumb down america and assume people don't know the actual meaning.
i like to explain things to kids, so, if it somehow came up, i would tell them the word exists and what it means, and have a discussion about the fascinating psychology behind the fact that while i know, and have always known, the meaning of niggardly, even i would probably choose to employ a synonym instead because the sound of the word does make me feel a bit uncomfortable.
Would you use "Benjamins" knowing that although it refers to 100 dollar bills but sounds like Jews and money? (Ilan Omar.)
hope it never comes to dumbing down carla
well... personally i have never even seen a 100 dollar bill, much less had conversations about them
lol
yes, because Benjamin Franklin is on the 100 and that's where it came from. would never associate that with Jews.
but again, what i would USE in a sentence, and what i would list in a dictionary, are not the same list of words.
me neither carla
And yes, we have lost a good 19th century literary word for stinginess because of it's "sounds like." I don't know if "jew's harp" or Wandering Jew as a plant is slur.
good question on the last 2. I assume they are but don't know the origins.
When Ilan Omar said "It's all about the Benjamins" the more right wing tear of my tribe jumped on her as an anti-semite. To me, her only mistake was she didn't know.
She was talking about Israel I Congress, as a new member of the supposed "squad."
sometjhing aout slurs.i am a caucasion female raised in maine. when i was a child , iremember my father telling me not to discuss hy heritage with my schoolmates. great grampa was from scotland -great grammy was from england and they both had been caled nasty names for ofne reason or another.
i think, though, that if one didn't know, and then one finds out, that someone else has a negative association, it's not a bad thing to have some element of "well it may not bother me, but if it bothers you, i care more about you than about using a particular word"
was benjamin franklin jewish?
i don't think so
You're totally on point about dictionaries. Also sensitivities on the rise as my lovely country sees more hate crimes, and something like 37 mass shootiings in 2023.
I don't get the $100 thing at all then
No Franklin wasn't Jewish, but foolish people could only imagine that because it is a Jewish/Hebrew name, she was an anti-Semite. Benjamin Netanyahu for example.
oh btw i'm not actually irish, i'm in the US also. my flag is aspirational.
His picture is on the 100 dollar bill. I think. I don't see those often either. We could also argue about Uncle Ben's rice, but that's another racial category.
people can imagine a lot of things. I don't get it. my son is named benjamin.
Rep. Omar was in some debate about the Middle East.
now you're telling me uncle ben is jewish?😜
well i can see where in a debate about the middle east, there would be a need to exercise more care
about a person's name?
By the way, I'm a lefty descendant of two socialist grandfathers (One founded the Progressive stage society in the early 1900s) so I am not saying I advocate censorship.
Certain names, like Abe, Benny, Irving...
The only Republican in my family is my ultra-Orthodox nephew, who lives in a separatist Orthodox community.
if in a context within the US, about US politicians, one said "it's all about the Benjamins", one would be less likely to be misconstrued due to the audience and context. if in a debate about the middle east, esp if the audience includes many people not familiar with the slang of Benjamins as $100 US currency, you can see how that could be a source of misunderstanding.
any time you engage in communication, the more differences there are between the people involved, the more care is needed to avoid miscommunication.
my grandfather was a passamaquoddy indian and gram was ostracised because she married him. we have a marvelous "blended" family- and today if anyone ever says anything nasty about my "nigger" grandchildren ( muy daughter married a black man ) or my kike grandchikldren- no 3 daughter married a Jewish man or my "bastard grand daughter- No 2 daughter didn t marry the loveof herlife we pay no attention.my son has been slurred because he is in his 50's and didnot marry...it is none of anyone's business that the love of his life died from complications of diabetis when he was in his 30's
hy6......clue please
How immigrants changed their names- Isaac or Itzhak became Ira, Moshe became Morris became Maurise. Solomon became Sumner. These names were all 20th century assimilations names. I am writing about this because I am actually writing a chap book about this.
Wow, Sammy's mom, that is quite a testimony.
no idea on hy6 but I found hy5, thanks
ditto re: hy words
I always joke that you're not Jewish if you don't have a cousin Ira. Score more points if he is from New Jersey. And bonus if he is a dentist. Sorry- watching a lot of re-runs of the Nanny.
I don't think I have this right...are you saying because of over-sensitivity we should not name our child Ben? I fully understand what you all of you are saying, except for this. It's similar to the word 'gay' which one has to walk around also. Kaplan please let us know when your work is finished!
my family has lots of friends and any and all are welcome here and if someone is offfended by are family or friends, they do not have to come here
Hy the laughing.
i don't think anyone is saying that people should not name their child Ben! lol
sammy what a wonderful blend, lucky you
hy6.....anyone?
sorry, aeb....don't have it yet...
phantom hyphen
ty for responding pen
Definitely I am not saying the absurd part of what you are suggesting. And I am not offended by any of you. I was educated on the fact that he4 has a benign meaning. I take much more offense when I see "cunt" in the grid.
hey, I responded 3 min ago!
and i dittoed hokie's response!
and I did try hyenae as I'm sure you all did JIC
yes and thank youall
but still need the hy6
yes san -we have almost evry race and creed in our family and celebrate them all, and my sister and herhusband have the same- they adopted nine 9yes (9) children aand have raised a huge and wonderful family.
i did too, even though i knew it was unlikely that hyena was latin, lol
same
The over-sensitivity and the racism was accusing Omar of being anti-Semitic because of her use of "Benjamins" for money. It was a segment of My People that took it to extremes. It is always a good strategy of a repressive government to pit the underdogs against each other.
good morning everyone - me too :D
aeb...found it....ends with a form of the verb to be....
hi nan....
well i mean when you jump to blame and accusation rather than reaching out to someone gently and saying, "i'm sure you didn't mean any offense, but to us, this has this association"... that's a problem in itself.
tyvm penq
yw...
I appreciate the thoughtful part of this discussion, which was all of you. It so easily turns into fights. The funny part is that I have aged out of the he4 word having any meaning, though it cold come back.
Hursh, did I do that?
no, whoever is blaming Ilhan Omar, it sounds like they did that
I think all I did was say there was another ethnic slur in the grid. There is often an anti-Italian one in the grid.
going to get some lunch....bbl...bye all...
Hursh, no- it was the right-wig faction of the community. Look up Sheldon Adelstein, or Adelman, .
no i'm just saying there is a cultural problem, out in the world, kaplan. not here in the chat. :)
I got you Hursh. My reaction is sort of funny then. I use a 1970s television show to back up my argument. "Boy the way Glenn Miller played..."
I watch a lot of 1950s game shows to chill out, my favorites being What's My Line and To Tell the Truth so it could be argued that I am not in the current real world.
do you like the 100,000 Pyramid
that is my favorite game, as a game
I do not like the 21st century. We are almost a quarter of a way into it. I do not like 2023. I do not like it in a tree. I do not like it here or there. I do not like it anywhere.
but Kap, there are good things about it and bad things about it, just like there have been in every other time.
I don't know that one. My other favorite is seeing Betty White with Allan Ludden on Password. I live in the past these days.
I prefer a year that starts with 19. Even though it was a terrible century, I feel like we are living a futuristic fantasy. The only thing we don't have from the Jetsons is our own flying cars.
Oh, I know, Hursh.
i taught in a 21st century 4th and 5th grade class that was racially diverse, and those kids hadn't a single thought about the different colors of their skin or where everyone was from. that's a beautiful 21st century thing. i showed them MLK's "I Have a Dream Speech" and i got choked up as a looked at them and told them, "You guys are his dream."
I don't know the 100,000 pyramid.
Hursh, that's beautiful. But the other side of it is how people use MLK's words against him. "I don't see color," they say. Oh yes they do.
I must be very dense...I cannot find hy6 even with pens clue.....?
hy + circumcision ceremony
tyvm brushy....never thought to go to the "b"
a tea rose or maybe a tulip carefully propagated could be called a hy 6 --- change last letter
Ive only seen it spelled with a "u".
there was an eo 7 called last night -- does anyone have a clue for it please>
it's because in greek it's upsilon, and it gets put into English in two different ways. like that's why we have a Uterus but if it is removed that's a hYsterectomy
gotcha
eo + short for story of one's life + ending of most contractions
or eo + bi5.14
ty bea - what a word -- how on earth did anyone find it right off the bat last night
just looked up the def --- must have a few biologists here
drat these P words
have all but 4 and so far they are words we've had before
i need 5
I'm struggling with the b words
ok i got one more P
i need 4 B also
i am most tickled by the be7
hi all. help with em 8 please
latin plural of the em7
oh, well, i shall need that one also
hi peri, are you wearing your tiara?
looking for em7
ends with Miss Moreno
yes I am :-)
oh it's a female retired prof!
ty Bea
yw
great. those diamonds and emerald look lovely on you!
phantom: ephemera
ty hurshy
Good morning from the western U.S. shores. Thanks for all the cluers -- I've been scanning chat as I go, and appreciate the assist.
Bea is also wearing a tiara today -- with opals, no less :)
well that E is also giving me trouble even with those words found
good morning ch1212
my tiara has sapphires
Opals were my grandma's favorite stone.
hi there nan, how goes it? Do you have the freezing weather we have? Plants going nuts.
tough grid for me
yes! -10C right now -- glad I didn't go all crazy last week and unwrap the roses
those are the ep words, hursh.
i can't tell if it's a tough grid or if i just can't find words during and after interesting and important conversations, lol
one plant still has last years green leaves and is now budding new ones which are getting frozen.
hurshy it is both, all the great conversation and ideas today have slowed me down on the grid for sure. It IS a hard one though.
not epee, not epha or ephor, i struggle...
it wasn't that warm here, but still in the plusses
young greek men
there are two ep7 words and I do not have either one
I still haven't found the ep words called last night
ok ty bea
hurshy have you got the greek boys and variations?
it is lucky i took greek... didn't remember those words but know the way greek words look, so i could monkey them more easily!
so that got me a 6 and two 7s
it is easy
now just change a vowel
don't know any greek :(
take lisa kudrow's Friends character and make an anagram of it and then tack an i on the end for one 7 and s for the other
probably a ph in there somewhere I guess
don't watch Friends
how many are there of these ep words total? more than my 3?
and have no idea who Lisa Kudrow is
oh yes, two more, got them
ummmmm that was my best clue
first ep6 ending rhymes with an older sibling insulting a younger saying "you're such a dw---!"
that gets an ordinary plural, and you make the other six by altering the last vowel of the 6 i clued. THEN, you stick ANOTHER vowel into that second six before that last vowel. and THEN, you change the last letter of THAT word for the final 7.
you've lost me hurshy -- no idea on the sibling insults -- don't have any
our generation gap appears in this instance to be an impassable gulf
*weeping*
thanks, hurshy! I was working off the wrong e for Lisa's character, but now I've got the 3.
ep6 = ep + male pronoun + existence verb
probably -- I would guess you are the same age as my kifs, or maybe my grandkids
But all generations can use Google .
and then all the variants that hurshy listed
nan have you got the he 4/7? add that to the ep.
Nan, google 'Friends Lisa Kudrow'.
he 4/7: cup-bearer to the gods
ty dan
yw
working on hurshy's variations now
ty dan and hurshy for all those crazy ep words
got them all, ty --- there is absolutely no way that any of those words are english!
what has happened to this game?!
today's grid is especially far-fetched
Out there like Pluto
They're Greek
off to get some breakfast - bye for now
bye nan!
this is a tough grid
especially the ep's
yeah, managed to guess a few of those
This one was a pain in the butt!
Guessed a few of the ep's?
hi again
always forget the british vet.
what is a british vet?
Oh I think I got it. he6?
oh, I don't have an he6. rehi, peoples.
and I have no idea what a british vet is. are we talking veteran or veterinarian?
nm. I mean I still don't know which vet but I found the he6 based on early chat.
help with re7. I do not have the two before it
I think she means the author, carla
animal doctor
yeah, they actually said the name in the chat this morning, so took one letter out and made it a 6. I have never heard of those books.
nm found them
It's a PBS thing, And Brit books.
ugh, eagles
If they make it to the Superbowl, I'm not watching
I usually don't anyway🤣
or I'll watch the commercials
I can't take The Eagles and Beyonce in one game
good point
ugh, agreed Molly
Why so much negativity toward the Eagles. Just curious
I can't speak for everyone but I don't like them
James Herriot penname for a British vet I would recommend the books
They have the most disgusting fans in the NFL
Oh so its not the team itself you detest, its the fans.
Yeah, Philly fans have made their teams most unwelcome.
to the point that I know the Nationals wont't sell tix in PA, NJ, nor DE when Philly is in town.
I have no love for the team either
anybody around can give stats for the corner E?
eo7 = 36
can you share a clue too?
It is a hard word...eo + abbreviation for a science class + common contraction. (there is a clue from earlier that I'm using part of that helped me!)
that is a weirdo - good clue ty april
there's also a bi5 in there
wow, thx for that clue, would never have gotten it
so br4 but not br4on ? weird
I tried that too but think it's probably a proper nooun
noun even
probably, but shouldn't the slangier one be also?
The br4 is also a herd of small whales.
aha!
ah, you are right
HOPE to never see those ep words again.
this game used to be fun but now filled with such obscure, useless, probably not even factual, that the game has become a chore and not very much fu.
fun
Hello to my fellow babblers! How's everyone doing today?
By the way, congratulations to all the finishers!Way to go
