ugh... at least i was awake for your fireworks.
Morning (evening) all - can I have a nudge please on the ot6?
ot6 has a double consonant in the middle and ends like a 4 letter j word for coffee
It is a musical term I have never heard of. But then, I don't write music, just enjoy it.
Thank you!
Ooof! Another small one and today I have time.
And yet, because of the many oddball words, it is challenging.
Hello, I've yet to find one easy!
You'd think after this many years, it would get easier....
lava
sorry, I'll be quiet!
Bring it on Ruby. There is always someone here looking for an easy clue.
I am so Lucky! I> almost ran out of wood and since the fireplace is my sole source of heat (beyond radiators in the bathrooms), I was panicking. But since this AM, acquaintances have found me two wood guys.
Phew!!
Wood guys are great. They bring it, they stack it. Gotta love wood guys.
For sure! I was picturing my cold, dead body, found by Neighbors....
Oh Ruby, have better thoughts than that. Thoughts become things.
aloe
I know, but it's been tough week
All the more reason to set your thoughts in the positive direction
I definitely need a pep talk!
One very nice thing, my son made a collage of photos of 4 of my dogs and a big family album going back more than 100 years including a couple of photos taken in 19th C. Ukraine
I think he expresses his feelings obliquely
I also have pictures taken in 19th C. Ukraine of my mother's family and my father's family
first pass thru--12 left
Hello Annie. Where in the Ukraine? My mother's family came from Ekaterinaslov (now Dnepropetrovsk) andfather's from a shtetl outside of Kiev, Kanotop
My mother is from Kiev and my father from Old Constantine (Ithink that was Americanized)
Old Constantine was a shtetl but my mother's family lived in the city
I have a picture of the village where my father lived gathered in front of a barn. They are sitting around a table with bottles of wine and cakes.
I just have a few formal photos. My mother's parents were city people, her father a tailor and dancing instructor. She was born in Ukraine, but arrived on the White Star Line at a year old, in 1910
Father's parents lived in the shtetl but came to the US earlier and settled in Scranton and, later, in Schenectady, where my father was born.
My father's mother was a great beauty and acted in the Yiddish theater in Scranton.
My parents were late arrivers. Father came to Boston in 1920 and mother to NYC in 1921.
Mother's family settled in McKeesport, outside of Pittsburgh.
So that is where you get your good looks, ruby
My fahter lived in Providence before he came to NYC and my mother lived in Harlem.
Hahah, but thanks. She was a wavy-haired, blue-eyed blonde, hencee my father's handsomeness and my son's blue eyes
I am happy that my son feels connected to the family even though he and I have our ups and downs.
MY grandmother used to take me to the Yiddish theatre on Second Avenue and hold me on her lap. That was how young I was.
He may be headed for Australia and New Zealand, if they can get decent standby seats from LA to Melbourne
Wonderful trip. But he made the album for you so now it is "ups".
I can picture that, Annie! My mother's mother once took me to Radio City when I was 4 but she died when I was 5 and my grandfather, before I was born.
With my father's family, out of a huge number of cousins, I was the only one close to "Grandma Nina"
My mother loved Radio City. She would keep me out of school and take me to Radio City and the Roxy. I didnt mind at all.
My father was one of eleven children so there were cousins all over.
what wonderful family stories -- and amazing photos!
My mothertr did similar things; since I was nver sick, when we'd go to the dentist in Manhattan, we would make a day or it and have lunch at Rubyfoo's
Hi Une, Your pictures are priceless.
I was very fortunate!
but they're not 19th century Ukraine! LOL
Sharing photos and stories make the Internet a blessing for us all!
i totally agree :-)
Although I have a lot of friends and acquaintancs here, nobody speaks English, so this place is really important for me.
And I love Une's dog photos!
this place being Babble
:-)
I loved Ruby Foos. I was born the worst year of the Depression but we survived. My father had a hosiery store and people needed hosiery. On the first day of school he gave each child a pair of socks that they could choose themselves.
Or is it Ruibyfoos?
My father had a candy store and when I was in kindergarten or 1stt grade, the whole class would walk almost a mile to his store and he'd give all the children ice cream
Oh how nice! I want chocolate.
I don't have any idea, but I think there's one in Montreal
Annie, I remember my mom telling me about sugar rationing . . . a big "dessert" treat for he and her brothers was a couple of spoonfuls of sweetened condensed milk :-)
*for her
Were they in Tennessee?
oh, ruby, your father and his store sound wonderful!
I do not remember the Depression too much because I was sheltered from the hardships people endured.
no, Ruby, they were in Louisiana
It was wonderful and I started working there when I was 7.
It was wonderful and I started working there when I was 7.
how fantastic! :-)
I could "mind the store" alone, by the time I was 9!
wow!
It readied me for a life in commerce LOL!
I could mind my father's little store starting at 12.
I was just too short to scoop ice cream, but I could make a fine "egg cream"
Those were safe days
my best family store story: my great aunt had a children's bookstore in Monroe LA (called "The Children's Bookstore" LOL)-- when we visited in the summer, I got to sit in the store and read any/all the books I wanted -- heaven!! :-)
Yes, ruby, they were. I would walk to my father's store which was about 3 miles away. I started helping him when I was 10 and my mother let me go.
al6 and vo6, please?
Une, That is fabulous.
vo6 french word for flying
al6 is a recess in a room
That sounds perfect, Une. I used to read comie books and then put them back on the rack
Just past Monroe on my way to Des Moines the other day.
comic*
Marc, I'm related to lots of folks in that area :-)
Wasn't Truman Capote born in Monroe?
ruby, my friends and did the same thing -- on Saturday we rode our bikes to Boyd Drugs on the square --- we bought Cokes and Fritos and read ALL the Archie and Veronica! LOL
Monroe is about 1 hour 20 minutes from where I live in Fairfield, Iowa.
I think if we all made charts of where we lived, who we knew, where we worked and added in all our relatives, we would all find connections to each other
Capote was born in New Orleans
Thanks Une for the vo6 clue
ah, thanks
Thanks Annie for the al6 clue
yw
I only find vo4, even though I'm thinking in French much of the time
ends in picnic pest
aaah, thank you
Ruby, you're probably right -- 6 degrees of separation :-)
I really think so
tx for the al6, Annie :-)
And Annie appeared just after my best friend in NY died, so she helped fill that hole in my heart. The last place we went together was Brighton Beach
Brighton Beach is the biggest Russian community in the US. I live in Brighton Beach.
The last time I was there was in 1999
Down to 20 and stuck. Could I get the stats for the two t's in column one, please?

Oh yay, Une has her campy Halloween girl icon up. : D
As the dyslexic, and much loved, Son of Soodle used to say ..... this Is HOBBIRLE. (Today's puzzle, I mean),
you're right Soodle ... if I get to half way I'm going to call it a job well done and do something else
... just at the half way mark I spotted a bunch of c's and l's ... got to 60% ... so I'm outta here before I get careless and spend the rest of the night trying to find the 33 that I've missed ... best wishes and lots of luck to all who continue ... 'til tomorrow
