Current rescues are her, another cat (who is likely to be adopted after Christmas, but potential adopter is leaving town and didn't want to take him until she gets back), a raccoon who's now pretty well over his concussion and broken arm and a bat that I have no idea why he's here, other than he won't fly - no apparent injuries or illness, and he eats and gets around his enclosure just fine.
a bat? I would not feel comfortable they are a bit creep
sure. foster-fail is when the foster home adopts the fostered pet; for a lot of rescues that then means they can't (or won't) foster any more because they already have a full house.

raccoon will get kicked out in the woods in the spring - I didn't figure it was fair to him to toss him out in this weather when he doesn't have a den set up. So he's basically just hanging out eating for a couple months.

Alberta offers a lot of places to live in the woods, I must admit - same for Manitoba and British Columbia. Probably Ontario and points east as well, but I don't know them well.
BC - I'm about 2 hours south of the border now, so moving a bit north would still be in range of visiting family. Beyond that, well, basically wherever someone needs another veterinarian. And given that we have clients who drive down from canada, I imagine that demand exists.

Vets are much in demand all over Alberta and BC - and in rural areas a vet who is actually interested in the little animals and wild animals is especially desirable. We have too many who think animals that aren't earning money for the ranchers are not desirable!
... one difference between Canada and the US is in the US you can go north south east or west and get somewhere ... Canada can almost be described as a 100 mile wide strip that runs from Atlantic to Pacific along the US border ....

Well, I do gotta charge for services, but mixed animal was always what I wanted to do, not a fall-back. The only problem I have with it is that I've developed a circulatory issue so can't work outside in the cold, or my fingers turn into rocks.

The worst thing about taxes is that IRS will take it as given that you are just trying to evade their taxes - you have to keep on filing US returns every year, even if you never owe them a penny. A nuisance.

Michigan has nasty car insurance laws that require drivers to carry insurance so expensive that a lot of us drive without it. (I'm insured at the moment but have often lost it due to not being able to afford it.)
couldn't you have them charged with leaving the scene of an accident with the local police? - I'm assuming they wouldn't wait until the police arrived

then again, welki, you guys have decent medical. in michigan, the high insurance rates are tied into having to cover medical. it's crazy.
our medical program isn't all that it's cracked up to be. canadian medical is run by each individual province, so what you'd be covered for in, say, ontario, differs greatly in alberta, british columbia, etc.
maybe our car insurance isn't as high as yours? - ours runs about $900 on each car with $300 deductable.
nan - i was talking about penalties for getting caught with an uninsured vehicle (insurance in alberta is expensive, too, though)
Michigan rates are all over the map. if you have a crappy car and you ask for the lowest coverage and you have good medical insurance already and a good driving record you can get "low" insurance, about $100-$150/mo

yes I realized that, welki -- didn't notice much difference in rates when we moved to BC -- mind you that was 25 years ago!
however, a high-value car, or having no medical insurance, or other factors can drive up your rates. My previous company quoted my $1900 for a six-month policy which is why i had to drive without insirance for a while as I hunted for better policy elsewhere

i agree, cybernan -- but i lay the blame also on insurance companies (they make more money if they keep you sick and out of the hosp) and pharma companies (they make more money selling you palliatives rather than cures)
still - my friend was charged $600 for a shot of antibiotic and 5 stiches in her finger when she was in Palm Desert --- that would have come under medicare here, therefore "free" and having required medical care in the UK and France while visiting, I'm pretty sure the tab would have been around $50 in either of those countries
if you cannot afford insurance, you should not drive.
our medical "system" is still for profit -- apart from some so-called free clinics I've heard about but never actually found -- and it's pretty disgusting

many people in michigan drive without insurance, when I had to go to court for my ticket ahead of me they had case after case, same issue, judge gave us something called an "attempt" which means we attempted to get insurance but could not afford, and got a lesser fine. So there's that.

Could be, but I'm only about 100 miles east of you. But, the third vehicle is old and doesn't have physical damage coverage. Depends on company and vehicles. But, I got an Outback for my birthday, and that is what drove the premium up. You really have to keep a close eye on the renewal info each year too, my company keeps upping the mileage and I have to call and get it down to reality - every six months!

That comes with the associated coverages - $3500 limit if you don't have comp & collision, otherwise deductible waived, but only if the uninsured person is identified and verified.
