baby K is on the mend from yet another round of RSV. (and mama is on the mend from a double ear infection - whee!)
RSV is thriving this year and our children's hospital is packed!
poor little guy has just sounded so terrible! they gave him an oral steroid this time + sent us home with a nebulizer.
Are those helping?
i think the doctor wasnt happy with how little the steroid helped...she was iffy about giving it to him in the first place with him being so young, but since he got it twice in a month, she went with it
as for the neb, he HATES the mask, so we dont use it. instead, we hold it in front of his face... so its not AS effective as it could be, but i do think its been helping.
his daytime cough is mostly gone + the chest rattle is greatly diminished, so hes definitely improving there. hes also had a different nighttime cough that the doc said is more of a spastic cough. poor guy sounds like he just cant catch his breath. (doc likened it to croup, but he doesnt have the croup virus)
Studies have shown that steroids and albuterol do not help with RSV bronchiolitis BUT they do help with asthma, so I suspect the doc was wondering if this second episode of wheezing is a clue that K has asthma. If these meds are not helping then he has typical bronchiolitis and will just get better in 3 weeks.
we're 2 weeks in + hes finally improving.
And blow-by nebulizer is just as effective as keeping the mask on.
well thats good -- because he screamed bloody murder with the mask on! (though folks have told me they actually take more medicine in when theyre crying?)
See, if he had rapidly responded to the meds it is more likely that he has asthma, but since his airways did not respond to the meds he has garden variety bronchiolitis like all these other wheezing kids under age 3 yrs right now.
i guess thats....good? id rather he just be garden-variety sick instead of asthmatic.
All kids get an RSV infection by age 3 yrs although not all kids wheeze from it.

and that nighttime spastic cough has been horrible on him!
Bronchiolitis is very frustrating for all involved--little ones, parents, and docs. There is no treatment and it takes about 3 weeks to resolve. Parents and kids get exhausted. Hospital treatment is just oxygen and IV fluid. Then a ventilator for the severe cases.

they almost sent us to the ER for chest x-rays, but i pushed back... i knew their concern was possibly pneumonia, but she had already ruled that out since he didnt have a fever. (i dont mind getting xrays if theyre needed, but not for something shes already ruled against!)
After 3-4 episodes of severe coughing, especially at night and with exercise, or wheezing, we then use the term asthma.

heh. we knew it was coming -- hes been drooling up a storm + constantly chewing on his fingers. we just werent *quite* ready for it to happen when it did! alas, poor little man has been fussy in the evenings because of it...doesnt want teethers or any of the standard remedies. (gonna try a frosty washcloth) so right now evenings are lots of fussing + him bucking/rearing back at us. whee!

MLF -- just wet a washcloth + put it in the fridge or freezer. my little guy LOVES chewing on his burp cloths, so i think he might like that to soothe his gums.

Just started taking Lyrica yesterday. Told to exercise more. Exercise just seems to make it worse at this point.
My father did. But I don't know how much of the pain was in his head. He managed to find enabling physicians to dope him up good.
Hope the Lyrica helps.
I have that problem with exercise also.
Been through several pain meds, anti-inflammatories, and nerve meds. Not much luck so far.

He only found relief with opiates, but that eventually led to his demise
