Thank you very much molly
Night all
Night... morning :)
Ru is Mr. Late Night now : P
Breakfast break, brb
Is that pe9 a word I'm likely to be familiar with? And good morning all! It is a bright morning here in Wraysbury
Very likely
OK, I shall continue looking. Thanks!
*Notice that Matty has NOT asked for a clue yet
Not yet, anyway :) Are you well, Molly?
I am not sick, so I must be well.
Unless I am in a well, and then I would be sick about that.
You would indeed. English is a funny language :)
Yesterday at work, we were discussing phrases that we wished people would stop using in business correspondence. "Be well" as a signature and the term "reach out" instead of "contact" were at the top of the list.
Also, any email that starts with "Team,"
Oh, reach out is one of my pet peeves. And 'proactive'. The opposite of reactive is surely just active...
I often tell people that you shoot baskets and you shoot guns but you do not shoot emails. And that if anyone "blew up" your phone or your email, they would be arrested.
Hah! Yes. I also get tickled by the differences in American English vs English English. I still find it amusing that in this country, I can smoke a fag and, as long as I do it outside, I won't be arrested for it.
Damn, don't smoke any fags here. The ACLU will be all over you. Not to mention PFLAG.
I can also borrow a rubber and return it when I'm done with it (though that's a usage that has fallen out of fashion)
The one that has a HUGE difference (and I learned this here) is the meaning of the word "fanny". The Brits must have been laughing their asses off when fanny packs got popular.
Oh my goodness, yes they did. Jeff still does.
I still do.
(finally found that pe combo - thanks!)
And I see the Brits refer to those as bum bags. Which here, might be mistaken for colostomy bag.
Haaa! Yes! The first time I saw a sign for a car boot sale, I couldn't imagine what they were selling
I had to ask about that one too. Here, there is literally a car boot that may get put on your car if you park illegally.
Although it is technically a tire boot.
Or, as they'd say here, a tyre boot. Here they're called wheel clamps.
I've never been able to figure out why Canadians refer to the car part as a tyre, but their big automotive store is Canadian Tire.
Until I read Bill Bryson's Notes from a Big Country (called I'm a Stranger Here Myself in the US - a better title, IMO), I didn't know that what I call polyfiller is called Spackle in the US - since I left the US when I was 20, it wasn't a thing I'd run across in my American time.
Ditto anchors - they're called rawl plugs here.
I used to think that nappies were little rests that British babies took.
Haaa! When I was a kid, I thought rest rooms were places to rest. I also got baffled by the 'littering $100 fine' signs on the highway. I thought that meant it was fine to throw currency out the car window.
I thought wash rooms were places to wash your clothes. The term WC had me totally stumped.
Many, many years ago, my family and I were going to a dog show some distance away. There were quite a few of us (not just family) so we went in convoy. I was with my dad - dad and I were greatly amused by a small hand printed sign reading 'Alzheimer's Polo Match'. The visions in our heads of confused horses and riders...
I could never figure out why British people were so fond of biscuits until I realized that they call cookies biscuits.
Though British biscuits/cookies are generally cautiously flavoured at best.
Or why British people liked their fish with potato chips.
Ah yes, the chips/crisps confusion
When I first came here, I couldn't figure out what in the world an OAP might be...
<---Had to look that up
Molly - it's the Brits that say tyre. Tire is Canadian
Yes, but lots of Canadians use Brit terminology. They use tyre, they "go on holiday" and "go to university".
They go to hospital as well. It seems the use of "the" is optional.
Oh yes. Except the country is The Lebanon
There are some great elderly people crossing signs here. A silhouette of two bent old people...
The Lebanon is a new one for me.
The Vatican, The Gambia....
Then there is "having tea" vs "taking tea".
Indeed! And the whole 'bathroom' thing. In this country, a bathroom has a bathtub in it.
I often bemuse folk here by mentioning the American habit of saying (for example) that a house has two and a half bathrooms (or baths)
Yep. Only half a bathtub in that small room. : D
heh, yes!
Mind you, we used to have a cat who liked sleeping in the toilet (half bathroom) sink. I was always tempted to turn the tap on
The term "toilet sink" would confuse most Americans. They wouldn't know whether to wash their hands or pee.
Ha! Though I've known drunk blokes to mix the two up
*Makes a mental note to never hold a drunk blokes hand
Good planning, Molly!
half a bathtub? the right half or the left half?
Hello
Hello, Ruby.
I haven't seen you in a while, Byz
Molly and Matty/ very amusing converssation
Glad you like it. :) Language is fun. And this is an appropriate forum for it!
You thinb? My housekeeper is teaching me lot of French argot so it's like another langguage.
Well, it being in French, it IS another language...?! ;)
And I teach her swear words, inadvertantly, of course

Looking forward to the playing the Canada Juniors today.

We can do it, I think Jose will be amazing this year, and Travis will last the season :)
pre-season baseball is all about having fun, the junior team must be thrilled
Have the team is going to Tampa today but hopefully the big guns will play the Juniors.
Half the team...lol
And...next weekend they are in Montreal...
we used to have a minor league team here, the calgary cannons - after growing up in nyc, it was great to be able to go to a baseball game when i moved here - was having withdrawal! (but they closed up shop and relocated to albequerque, and there aren't many others in alberta)
We do have a team in Kitchener, but I've never gone to a game. I know a man whose son plays on the team.
you should - we had nothing but good times at the games, and tickets aren't expensive
