12:25 am

My 7 is from my days of volunteering at a museum in college...

12:27 am

12:27 am

Another 7 for 40, and a 7 for 44.

My seven is a LOTR character.

12:30 am

so is mine

12:36 am

my 32 is an s, the 40 and 44's are d's - are yours?

12:36 am

I don't have a LOTR character. Went to the IMDb to see if I could find it. Not yet... BTW, my 12:25 am post was a hint...

Found an 8 for 45.

12:38 am

I have D-7-40, E-7-40, E-7-44.

12:40 am

doesn't the collective brain get tiresome? just wondering.

12:40 am

my 7/40 means to talk at length

12:41 am

Fer sure.

12:45 am

67 for 780. 'Nite y'all.

12:50 am

I have a p-7-40

12:58 am

coquette is probably the #1 non-word i'd have liked to have seen.

Damn, you can almost get 'coquette'.

1:14 am

I wish they'd taken "codetta"- it's in my dictionary!

1:17 am

86 words-1125 points

1:23 am

another d-7 for 36. found 2 e's - thanks muthermujer. wouldn't have seen them.

1:24 am

95 for 1246, and I think I'd better go do my email!

101/4.83/1280 I have sevens for: 40, 26, 28, and 32, and an eight for 45.

1:37 am

I have 7s for: 40, 40, 44, 40, 28, 32 but not the 26.

1:40 am

1:45 am

1:59 am

2:21 am

anyone out there? anyone out there use the qu for any other word than the one?

2:35 am

I`ve got 2 q`s

2:37 am

3 q`s now

3:09 am

Hurray for LotR characters :)

3:44 am

It wont take TARDIS! Have they never watched Dr Who?

5:13 am

At 12:38 am mulhermujer said... I have D-7-40, E-7-40, E-7-44. I can't find any E words that long - I know I only have two but.... any hints for them please?????

6:55 am

The long E words are formed using a prefix.

7:01 am

Cool - crossed the 1500 point line before I crossed the 100 word line - 99 for 1504 so far.

7:54 am

116 for 1781; six 7s and two 8s, so far. Off to look for the other long words.

7:55 am

Ooops ... two more 7s... onward and onward...

8:16 am

ooh how dare it not take Tardis !

8:20 am

There's at least on Latin q...

8:21 am

Whoops I meant one!

8:21 am

At 06:55 am BIA said... The long E words are formed using a prefix. And why I didn't spot that prefix is anyone's guess - me I'll blame it on the kids. Thanks! I found 'em.

8:22 am

How dare it not take oddist!!! That's the most odd thing I've ever heard :)

Shouldn't that be "oddest"?

8:26 am

of course it should be oddest. But I wanted another "O" word :)

8:27 am

NADER isn't a word........... go figure................

Heh, well, making up words does seem to work sometimes... I dunno what dictionary they use, but I think Webster might be spinning in his grave.

8:39 am

I found one LOTR word - ents, but it won't take it :( I've run through all the main characters - who or what am I missing ?

9:04 am

I got an 8 for 48, but I'm sure everyone else does too

9:05 am

oops that's 8 for 45

9:06 am

Not me, I have neither 7s nor 8s yet. Any clues ?

9:11 am

hi dim, the 7 and 8 (same word tnense change) means "striped"

9:14 am

I have 2 7-40s. Both start with D and they are very similar words, at least in the way they are spelled. The consonents are almost the same, the vowels are different.

9:14 am

Mmmm thanks, fit1, I''ll work on that.

9:18 am

does striped mean without clothing or like the flag's red and whites?

9:21 am

You cannot make a 7/26 or a 7/45 for anyone who was asking about them earlier. It's mathematically impossible, since all 7 letter words have point values that are multiples of 4.

Stripe = as in with stripes. Stripped, would be to remove.

9:27 am

Cannot think of any more words for striped that fit the puzzle. Even tried the online Thesaurus. Better take a break and come back fresh after a coffee.

9:33 am

thesaurus.com doesn't have the word "striped" that's why I thought maybe you spelled the word incorrectly. sorry for doubting you. I guess Mr. Roget doesn't know everything. Could you please, pretty please with sugar and a cherry on top, tell us the starting letter? I feel so stupid. Everyone has this word but me.

9:34 am

hi Mom

9:35 am

The 8 for striped starts with S

9:36 am

A hint for the 55-point 8-letter word would be warmly welcomed!

9:38 am

As soon as you divulged the starting letter the word jumped out at me. Why didn't I see it before? DUR.............

9:41 am

Got the 8 for 55, entirely by accident.

9:49 am

213 words, 3319 pts Best word for 60 pts (8 letters) 78 words of length 4 71 words of length 5 45 words of length 6 15 words of length 7 4 words of length 8

9:51 am

Looks like I need 6 more 7s and 2 more 8s. Not to mention a lot of additional words, no doubt. Argh!

9:55 am

anceps, according to my solver (which may be entirely wrong) you're missing a 5-letter word.

127/1909

9:58 am

Think of an alternative name for a main LotR character dimwit ;)

9:58 am

My wordlist may be not up to date... I don't know :-)

9:59 am

The solver I use does not use the enable dictionary. It has been wrong by a few words many times, so it might be again. Did you find all the words, or is that just from a solver?

10:03 am

It's from a solver... I use the enable list, but I once found a word in the grid that wasn't accepted. I looked in my enable wordlist end there it was...

10:03 am

131-1960 thats enuf for now

10:09 am

Amazing what a cup of coffee can do, got the striped words now ! :)

10:10 am

And, hence, the related LOTR word !

10:12 am

Sorry Atalante, only just now seen your message, it came on while I was coffeeing. Hadn't thought of that option.

10:14 am

yeah mines from a solver too; weighs about 2 lbs and sits on top of my shoulders

10:15 am

stevedallas - Haven't you ever seen the movie Jerry Maguire? According to that, the human head weighs 8 pounds. :)

10:21 am

Maybe my sister could figure out the LOTR name...hint, hint, hint... ;-)

10:29 am

Any other clue for the LOTR word would make it too easy - look at Atalantes at 9.58 am Perhaps that will help ?

My post where I said there was a seven for 26 was a typo... I meant 36.

10:45 am

sorry...I was saying, my sister has seen the movies and read the books. She might be playing, so this was a hint to her! I googled, but have no clue :-)

10:46 am

I have 11 ds but no 7 - which d does it start with please ?

10:49 am

d

10:50 am

ooops thrid line 1st on the left

10:52 am

dimwit - There are at least 5 7-letter words that start with D.

10:56 am

Oh, now you've depressed me jim_mi. Just as I was inwardly chirping as I have just got to 1003 points for only 72 words!

10:57 am

anceps posted stats below - did you see them? Lots of words to find today!

10:57 am

Ah, that's the one I have been working on Onyx, I will have to think harder !

11:30 am

If catclaws is allowed, I think catdirt should be too!

11:35 am

Atalante - I agree totally! I also wanted dirtcan.

what no 'pitta' bread

12:22 pm

That's not how you spell it. But thanks for the word! I'd somehow missed it.

12:28 pm

Thought I'd share where I am - 148/5.09/2357: Ax15 Cx19 Dx26 Ex4 Ix2 Ox4 Px5 Qx3 Rx27 Sx18 Tx20 Ux5

12:31 pm

I'll help you out with my counts if you'll help me find 5 U words. I seriously thought there were none. Must be blind! 16xA 27xC 28xD 4xE 2xI 4xO 12xP 3xQ 29xR 19xS 20xT

12:33 pm

OK, just found 3 of the U's. I'm rolling my eyes at myself now because I saw that earlier, but was emphasizing the wrong syllable and just thought it sounded too silly to be a word.

32xC here.

Oh, and 7xE, 2 of which are 7 in length.

12:37 pm

OK, no need to trade clues. I found 5 U words. :)

12:38 pm

I googled the Lord of the Ring clue-- I didn't see the movie, and if I read the book it was 300 years ago, so... I can't hook up any of the 21 names I found...... aaargh. The striped clue? I'd think layers of the rocks, rathe than striped animals or curtains.. Okay, back to Bilbo et al.

12:40 pm

I went off to get a coke after writing that jlm_mi and find you have answered your own questions - perfect! Thanks for the trade - I'm off to take a good hard look at those C's...

12:41 pm

i just found the 8 /55 don'y i feel silly.

12:43 pm

Christine - You don't need to know LOTR to get that word. It's a perfectly normal word that just happens to be the "nickname" of one of the characters. It's a 7-32. Here are the 7s I have so far so you can see where it falls in the list. 40,40,44,40,40,36,44,40,40,28,32,44,40

Wait, so there's two 8's? One for 45 and one for 55?

12:48 pm

jlm_mi -- is it anything like the name of one of the 21? (garbled sentence!). I should've stayed away.. I'm trying to finish "Rule of FOur"... lots of encryption and encoding (there's a clue)

12:48 pm

felicity - there are 4 8s. See anceps post earlier for a breakdown of the words by length

12:49 pm

I'm not sure what that sentence meant, Christine, but if you're asking "is it related to a 6-letter word for 21 points/" then the answer is yes. :)

Pfft, that's what comes of having to actually work occasionally. You miss stuff.

1:05 pm

Finally got the LOTRs clue. The word is more often used in the book. I don't know if I heard it used in the movie too often after the 1st part of the 1st movie.

1:14 pm

Well heck, I'll get the book(s) when I go to the library, on Monday... the world is just too full of LotR clues.

1:23 pm

6 x E ....

1:28 pm

Atatlante - There were 7xE earlier posted by true_felicity. Still can only find 4. sigh . . .

1:35 pm

I'd appreciate a clue or two, for the 7 letter d words, been busy on other things for a bit and still can't see any.......Does one begin with doc?

1:39 pm

Yes, but not pronounced like doctor. Three of them use the same 3-letter prefix. The 5th would be a slang word. You might expect to hear its 4-letter counterpart, equivalent of darn!, more often. They are 40,44,40,40,36 points.

1:40 pm

Oh, and so as not to confuse, I don't mean that three of them use doc. One is doc, then 3 others with a different prefix. :)

Here's some clues on the E's: 1 is a plant 1 is something a secretary would do 2 are something a politician would do 3 are something a programmer would do

1:44 pm

Thanks, Jim_mi

1:46 pm

Ooh! Got one!

1:47 pm

oh oops sorry *blushes for not keeping up with Es*

1:48 pm

Just wanted you to know where to keep looking. :) Thanks felicity!

NP! That first one is a rare word, by the way. I sort of stumbled on it by accident.

1:55 pm

i found 5 7 letter d words are there more ?

Thanks, jlm! I got the d-7s I was missing.

2:00 pm

onyx - not sure. I only have 5. But I've only found 13 of the 15 7-letter words. I posted my list of point values, in alphabetical order, at 12:43. If you have different ones, that may help determine if there are more Ds.

And we're absolutely sure there's 213 words in there, 'cuz I am at 169, and I am running out of ideas.

Would the a hairstyle from the past be an "updid"?

2:03 pm

Not absolutely sure, but there are certainly close to that many. Probably somewhere between 210 and 216. ;) I'm at 172 and I don't have some of the Es or Cs, so I can probably help you figure out where to look for a few more: 16xA 30xC (there are at least 32) 28xD 4xE (there are at least 7) 2xI 4xO 12xP 3xQ 29xR 19xS 20xT 5xU

2:04 pm

felicity - I had to try that one too, just in case. I also tried tedia, just in case it was the state of multiple things being tedious at the same time. :-D

Wouldn't that be "tediae"?

2:08 pm

I *think* (after due consideration of the lists of word values) I've got 1 7 different to you jlm_mi ... its 44 and comes either above or below your first 40 (but I haven't got that one so I can't be absolutely sure LOL)

2:09 pm

Naw, tedia/tedium just like data/datum.

2:10 pm

Atalante, my first 7 is NOT a D word, but my next 5 are. Does that make a difference in your analysis?

Hah, I found two more P's, a 6 and a 7! Now I have 14 P's. For a clue to this, think a special type of person, that even has his (or her) own day in the US.

And that brings me up to 181.

2:24 pm

My first one isn't either ...... its a C 44

2:29 pm

felicity - Is that your only P7? I have a P6/7 combo. The 7 is worth 40. But I don't think I know of them having a day in the US????

2:29 pm

Atalante - My first 7 is an A word.

2:30 pm

OK, I looked it up. Is this day September 19. Not exactly an official holiday. ;)

Yeah, you got it (there are 2 6's btw). Think "Talk like a ..." Day. ;)

jlm... don't tell me you missed 'talk like a ___ day'!

There is also a C word that uses the Q.

2:32 pm

You mean 2 6s that start with P, or 2 associated with that word? I have 4 6s that start with P.

2:33 pm

RFH - I do remember, now, hearing about it on the radio. It was funny, but I did not partake. :-D Had the C word with Q. Very nice word indeed. :)

And inspiration strikes. There 19XA that I know of so far, and 36xC.

23xT, too.

2:38 pm

felicity - In case you missed my 2:32 post about the Ps, just wanted to point you there. Very curious here!

I think I found the other two P/6's you have? Are they sort of synonyms?

I'm sorry, they're sort of antonyms.

2:41 pm

I have 4xP-6. One goes with the 7. I can't really think of a way that the others are related to one another. Their point values, in order (including the 7-related one): 24,30,24,27

2:42 pm

As a realllllly good stretch I could say that maybe the 3rd and 4th are sort of opposite in meaning.

Well, if you think about it, two of them are sort of opposites of each other. :) But I have all four. There is also an R6 that's a musical term that I just now got. :-/ And I'm a musician, heh.

In fact, that fact that I didn't get that R6 musical term is due to the fact that I'm another R6 that can be found on the board. ;)

2:45 pm

'talk like a ___ day ???? mysterious!!

2:47 pm

Atalante - We have Dave Barry to thank for this day, but you can certainly find it with a google search. I had the word, and went and searched for "***** US holiday" and the first hit that came up was about that day. :)

did you say there were some U words? I can't find aaaany :/

2:50 pm

There are at least 5 U words. 4 of them start with the same 2-letter prefix. The other one is a funny little word, and I have no idea what it means.

thanks..

got them!

2:56 pm

Can anyone offer updated number of words per letter with more than I posted below? Also, I'm resigned to possibly never finding the E plant word, but any help with "what a politican would do" beginning with E? I have the others.

If I hadn't D/7=44 so much last night, this puzzle would be a lot easier to solve... any other word hints? :)

2:58 pm

jennbee - There are tons of clues throughout the log. What haven't you got yet? anceps posted the totals by number of words per letter count, so that will tell you how many big words you're missing and we can go from there.

2:59 pm

Atalante - Got that C44. Only so many combos that will add up to that, you know? But definitely never heard of it before!!!

Think what has to happen to a bill or something in congress. 35xR - I'm getting there slowly. :)

3:05 pm

oh - thats funny :) though I'd already got the word ... pah!!

3:06 pm

And she breathes a sigh of relief . . . Thanks felicity! I don't know how I missed it, but I think I could have stared at the puzzle all day and not seen it.

3:08 pm

OK, I have all the big words (7s and 8s): 8s: 50,60,45,55 7's: 40,44,40,44,40,40,36,44,40,40,40,28,32,44,40

3:11 pm

there are occasional advantages to being a Brit in this game - and knowing that C 44 is one of them!

Well, it's time to go home. I give up. 206 - 3248

3:51 pm

142/2087, not one 8 (but 11x7) to my name, and only a few minutes left beore I go home. Not bad for a day I actually worked on my job =)

3:52 pm

which A does the A7 start from????

3:57 pm

Upper right. It's a suffix on a 5 for 16. 19xA 31xC (are at least 36) 28xD 6xE (are ate least 7) 2xI 0xN 4xO 14xP 3xQ 33xR (are at least 35) 21xS 22xT (are at least 23) 5xU

crisco is sure in my vocabulary

4:14 pm

It won't accept 'diad.'

4:16 pm

I think it is spelled dyad, but not sure

4:17 pm

total loss on the u's-I can't get even one

4:20 pm

periwinkle - its spelled both ways, although, dyad is the more common spelling.

4:44 pm

Back again for a bit, done the d 7s thanks, any clues for the u's ? how many letters in the words ? Itried lots of 4 letter combinations but no go. The only one I recognise is ursi (from uva ursi - Latin plant name) but it isn't accepted.

4:54 pm

Which E does the 7/44 start with, please.

4:55 pm

marigold, are you playing today?

5:00 pm

bottom left corner

5:04 pm

Onyx, thanks, I will keep looking

5:05 pm

onyx, Thanks, I got it.

5:07 pm

Which C does the 44 point word start with, please?

5:09 pm

peri, it has to do with what programmers do (i thinh)

5:12 pm

which c does it start with though?

5:15 pm

peri, my computer is slow my last post had to do with the e word. i think the c is in the upper right but i have not got it to work yet, a scottish word for tinker

5:18 pm

I already had the 7/e/44 word. Now I will work on the7/c/44. Thanks.

5:34 pm

The C starts in the lower left. It is Scottish, but is a witchy word. For the Us, they are 6,6,7,7,4 letters.

5:36 pm

jlm-mi, Thanks I will look there. I was working on the wrong C and found a word I did not know. It was accepted.

5:43 pm

found one U word using atoz word finder. Never knew there were so many 6 letter U words.

5:46 pm

The only witchy words I can think of are coven and covenant and they do not fi.

5:47 pm

I meant ---do not fit.

5:49 pm

I'd guess it's not a witchy word you've ever heard of. At least, I know I haven't. Atalante, being British, knew the word. I found it knowing the score (not too many possible ways to make it) and then noodling. It's actually a compound word, though neither word's original meaning has anything to do with the total meaning.

5:50 pm

Well I probably won't get it.

6:04 pm

The witchy word is a compound oof two words - 3 and 4 - and you probably have both words in your list...

No wonder I couldn't find the c-word - I was looking for the incorrect number of points. Found it, finally.

6:45 pm

Haven't quite figured out how to find a word using the number of points in the word.

7:12 pm

I have the following 7's. d/7/40, d/7/44, d/7/40, e/7/44, e/7/40, p/7/40, s/7/28 and the plural for s/8/45, and s/7/32. I am missing 7 seven letter words and one 8 letter word. Would someone please tell me what they start with. I know there is a c/7/44 but I cannot find it.

7:13 pm

peri - The word is 7 letters for 44 points. If you look to the right, you'll see a chart of how points are calculated. So, you would add up the points of all the letters in the word, then multiply by 4 for the 7 letters. That means that the points in the word add up to 11 in this case. If each letter were 1 point, it would add up to 7 (obviously), so you need 4 extra points somewhere. You know it begins with C, worth 3 points, or 2 extra points. Now you need two more extra points. The Qu is too big at 6 points. The only other multi-point letters are P (2 extra points) and D (1 extra point). So, in your 7-letter word you'll use the C, and either use the P or 2 Ds. A hint - this word uses the P.

7:16 pm

jlm_mi, Thanks, I will keep trying. You are always willing to help me and I appreciate it. :)

7:17 pm

Found it before the 'p' hint... but indeed I had been looking toward two d's.

7:20 pm

Hey, so, about those 8's.... I've got the 45 and 55.

7:22 pm

Q, can you give me a hint for the 8/55 or at least tell me the starting letter.

7:23 pm

Can anyone point me to the p/7/40 clue. I believe I have all the other 7's

7:23 pm

I think almost all of these have been discussed throughout the chat, so here's a compiled list of the 7s and 8s. 7 7 40 a 7 44 c 7 40 d 7 44 d 7 40 d 7 40 d 7 36 d 7 44 e 7 40 e 7 40 p 7 40 r 7 28 s 7 32 s 7 44 u 7 40 u 8 8 50 c 8 60 r 8 45 s 8 55 s Keep in mind that an 8-letter word gets multiplied by 5 before scoring.

7:24 pm

The P7 was discussed at length starting at 2:22pm.

7:25 pm

Thank you.

7:27 pm

ok found the scottish witch word. didn't even know it existed. on to the next 7.......

7:28 pm

I already have the p/7.

7:28 pm

for the p-7 think of Jonny Depp's character in the caribbean movie

7:32 pm

May I have a clue for the r/8/60, please?

7:32 pm

May I have a clue for the r/8/60, please?

7:34 pm

I didn't see the movie. I know there is a d in the word, but alas, where :(

7:35 pm

Oh, man, I'm doing too much babbling. I almost didn't put a word into today's puzzle because I thought I already had. Turns out, that was yesterday! When I clicked the definition button I recognized it, and couldn't understand why two words today had the exact same definition. LOL! Oh, and it's only 4 letters, so don't waste too much time scouring yesterday's word list. :-D

7:35 pm

I found the r/7 while looking for the r/8.

7:36 pm

fit1 - The P7 is the past tense verb form of a P6 noun. The P6 is 24 points.

7:36 pm

fit1, Think of Captain Hook in Peter Pan.

7:36 pm

ne'er mind. I found it!!!!

7:36 pm

The R 8 starts with the other R but ends in the same corner as the R7.

7:37 pm

Wow, I made 2 posts both at 7:36!

7:43 pm

Which A do I use to start the 7 letter word?

8:01 pm

peri, second line on the right

8:06 pm

got the 7-40-a!!

8:08 pm

I had the root word but was using the wrong choice of letter to end

8:14 pm

found the 7-44-d had the root word but didn't add suffix

8:16 pm

any clues for the c-8 for 50 would be much appreciated

8:16 pm

Any hints for the R 8 or C 8, please?

8:25 pm

make that the 50, 55, and/or 60

8:28 pm

the 8 for 55 starts with an S. To get it add a suffix to a S 6 for 27

9:09 pm

I have 129 words and thought I was doing well. Until you all told me what I am missing :(

9:17 pm

I'll have to give up on the u words unless someone can give me some clues as to their meanings. I have tried all sort of combinations, been through scrabble and ordinary dictionaries and anagram finders and nothing comes up to match at all!

9:21 pm

3 of the u's are related to something you do to your datebook or calendar when you make a new appointment. 4 of the 5 of them start with the same 2 letters. HTH

9:22 pm

You will kick yourself when you see how easy 3 of the u-words are...I did. ;-) Think of...getting the latest info...

9:23 pm

I have a few that start with a prefix meaning above, and go from there. One has to do with a calendar, then add a suffix

9:31 pm

thanks fit1 & jennyb, your'e right, how could I miss those ? I've just been back to the scrabbler and they are there. I was confusing myself with the order by counting - not a good idea for me. And it is 3.30 am here - (yawn)

9:36 pm

Dim, dear heart, get thee to thy bed

9:39 pm

It's so hard to leave............:(

9:40 pm

......but I suppose I must! Nos da i bawb!

9:59 pm

I'm still missing several words including 4 7s and 3 8s, but my goal was to top 2000 points and then go to bed. Well, the fat lady just finished her aria. I'm at 134/2074. Nighty-night kiddos.

10:02 pm

133=1911. That's all she wrote. Niters all :)

10:07 pm

I can't get that A word for anything! Driving me crazy! hints??

11:27 pm

Four of the U words start with the same 2 letters, the fifth word is an annual bean grown in India. Does that help? I found the fifth one in my Scrabble Players Dictionary. But its not in the Dictionary.com.

11:48 pm

I still don't have the C-8 or R-8. :(
