Goodmorning

Morning Ruby! I'm here (for a short time, anyway(
Hello Matty
The sun is trying, unsuccessfully, to come out
When will summer come? Or, rather, will summer come?
As long as there's no frost, all will be finbe, if slow
I was hoping for a lovely day today, but alas, no. My birthday's tomorrow...the party is today. It was supposed to be in the pub garden but that is looking unlikely
Happy Birthday, a day in advance. I hope the sun will surprise you!
Thank you! I have a band, but I think they'll be indoors now (I turn 50 tomorrow - eep)
50 was one of the best birthdays!!
I asked a friend of mine, who turned 50 a month ago, what it's like. She said it was like 40 but with more Depeds
Depends, even
I agree Ruby 40 to 50 are good years - still young but street smart - Happy Birthday Matty
Exactly! And hello ursh
Morning ursh!
Hi all
This is not being a friendly grid for me
It''s a hard little one, I'm struggling to re*** half
I was hoping for 300+ and lots of s's and e's!
I have 42 left, still
Me, too, 42
And many holes
The meaning of life, the universe and everything
I still have holes too, no 8s or 9s, missing the C in the bottom of the third column and also the one in the same column above the Y
And the A next to the Y
I have some, do you want some clues
Yes please!
good evening to you all
c in bottomcolumnis a hiddensupply...or pot plantcover
And to you (or good noon, as it just about is here)
How did I miss that?!
Hello lynxx and kalia

Happy Birthday for tomorrow Mattie, hope the weather improves for later
Ooo, Matty is having a birthday? Have a great day celebrating yourself, Matty.
Thanks!

It's sad. I actually looked for crap in the grid.
lol...
this grid seems much harder than yesterday
and yesterday's was not fun either...
I don't enjoy grids that are full of words with obscure meanings and words that are not in the English language.
me either....i don't like small grids because they often have those kinds of words...
Me neither. Especially when the database is missing quite a few common words, both newer words and more local words
I don't like grids you can finish before breakfast or lunch...
though I have yet to understand how you can have a currency from a country that vanished a century ago, a piece of fabric in some odd language, and yet not have words like "nems"
phantom for me today: autocrat...
my aunt's name is in the grid: Aurore....
That is a French name, n'est pas?
Oui.....she had brothers named Donat and Ovila amongst others...
Yes, it's also my best friend's name. We went to England together one summer, so she got to meet my cousin. He couldn't say Aurore so he called her orange...
i had another aunt named Quieta....
hah, budgie...
I bet your aunt was quieta woman : D
heh heh....she was a nun....
(Filling in for Ru)
she spent a few years in a cloister, so she was quiet Quieta... ;o)
A nun? Yee gods. After 12 years of Catholic schooling I have nightmares about nuns.
she was a nice nun....taught school for a while....my sister-in-law had her and said she was very nice and quite popular...
They gave you nun too pleasant dreams
good one, budgie...
careful...you will catch Ru's habit of punning... ;o)
My sister and I just about choked we were laughing so hard at The Penguin part of "The Blues Brothers".
of course, it's not a black and white affair....
Oh I'm already a serial punner
taking a break.....bbl to find my last 25....
Witzelsucht is a tendency to tell inappropriate joke and creating excessive facetiousness and inappropriate or pointless humor. It is seen in Frontal lobe disorders usually along with #moria. Recent research has shown that it may also be seen in frontotemporal dementia.
A soldier who survived mustard gas and pepper spray is now a seasoned veteran.

I am loving the small grids
Hi Judi, Dorens.
Small grid, impossible words. Just the thing if you are into frustration. : D
Dorens is a glutton for punishment.
I need to go get a pedicure. Why am I sitting here suffering through this?
Judi, I would have been off to a pedicure hours ago, if it was in the budget. Go pamper yourself.
Peeks at judi's toes

Jamaican music

How are you, peri?
I am well, ruby. how are you?

I'm discovering why we've always built a new house up until now
I have a used house🤓
finding that a lot of the crap that happens on TV reno really does happen
screwy wiring and screwiy plumbing -- things that you don't find until you start opening up walls, and moving light fixtures.
Yes. I have had to fix a few poorly done things
So far $25k. Still some plumbing to do
building codes now are a whole new ball came compared to 20 years ago
Absolutely
*game
Almost done ?
and this was a gated community project -- think they got away with more stuff than single builds -- inspectors in too much of a rush
we had to have the wiring in the kitchen area redone, the ceiling fixed and retextured and it seems that everywhere we want to install something, there is a stud in the way. But the base cupboards are mostly in, uppers on Tuesday, hardware and tweaking on Wednesday.
I figure we are about 2 weeks behind at this point.
However settlement for this house isn't until July 7 so we have some time.
Yikes. When do you have move out of your current house?
we're aiming for June 15 - 20
ru 7 please?
Ooh hard to clue
Beginning of tough guy plus not me but+ not no in germN plus a vowel

Ahh. Congrats.
Congrats, penquis.
ty, ty...
back to my crossword puzzle....bye all....
Bye penquis
hi all
Hi jm!
I been out yelling at bunnies. . . they be eating my garden again! :(4
s
i wish you would come get them. . . .
;)
Spray "Invisible Fence." We have to use it because the deer mow down everything here in the woods--hostas and lillies are favorites.
invisible fence? I wonder if the part service would allow it.
of course what they don't know. . . .
I even had a bunny burrow in my garden. . .
so many phantoms. . . orchid. . . crayon. . . .
It's nontoxic, just a smelly repellent that loses its smell to us when it dries. Sulfur, rotten egg smell.
You have a nice home for them, jm. They must stay safe from predators. Rabbits are prey.
hmmm. . . I will look into it. . . but the park service won't even let us bring in horse manure.. . .
I understand that scrabs but they brought in the hawks last year and the foxes this year and it is getting dangerous for the cats. . .
the thing that saves my cats is she is too old to spend much time outside anymore. . .
Your home is in which park?
And why were hawks and foxes brought in?
haha the part where my veggie garden is three long blocks from my house in DC. . . your tax dollars at work. . . .
the rabbits brought in the hawks and faxes from Rock Creek. . . they smelled rabbit. . .
Oh, a community garden?
the national park where my veggie garden. . . yes, they have been there since before WWII
Oh, I get it now. Yes, small animals are food for the bigger animals. It makes me sad but that hawks and foxes cannot go to a grocery store.
one of my neighbors told me about how they had a squirrel in their backyard they loved to watch and one day while they were watching a hawk swooped down and killed it an ate it. . . the neighbors panicked that her daughter saw that but the daughter said: hawls have to eat too, mama.
That is how nature works.
yep. . . I think it was great that the kid was explaining it to her mom. . . rather than the mom "protecting" her. . .
I looked at a map of DC so I see Rock Creek Park. I have never been to DC so I think of it as an urban center only.
Sometimes kids are more accepting of reality than adults.
It has a law that prevents people from cutting trees down. . . look at the google map and you will see how green it is here. . . I live next Ft. Reno park and that is where my garden it.
DC has a lot of green, particularly in the west & north
Yes, which is why it drives me nuts when people shelter there kids that way. . . kids understand what they need to. . .
howdy Mr. 2bit. . . .
Hi Dan.
people were appalled that I told me son his dad was dying (I told him in increments--it took two days) and I said "what am supposed to do? Let him be blindsided?"
hiya - was in Denver this week for work. Snow in May
I have seen young kids be very accepting of their serious illnesses and prepared for their own deaths. It blows me away.
I knew several people out in Colorado last week. . .great skiing weather. . .
You, of course, did the right thing, J.
his principal told me that she knew parents that didn't tell their kids they were going to the dentist lest the kids worried! *palm to forehead*
this grid is a bear
yes
hi allyall
I believe in telling kids about reality and teaching them to cope with the adversities of life. Life is not fair nor easy.
Hi allyall
and it is so much easier to cope when you are not constantly surprised!
hi yall
Yes. Kids that get unpleasant surprises learn to not trust their parents.
I don't think I have met you before, allyall. . .
nice to meet you. :)
haha always telling my son the truth . . . including I am not ready to have that conversation with you yet (to early to discuss abortion) and I will talk to you later (and then actually doing it) really paid off for me. . . .
Kids don't need to hear everything at all ages, but just they need to know what they need to know for their age, and to answer their questions.
when the police came to arrest my hubby because they had targeted him for being a good criminal trial lawyer I was able to tell my son to go to his room and I would talk to him later and my 6 year old son went off without so much as a backward glance at the police with the warrants. . .
because he knew I would explain it all later. . .
Your son trusted you. I assume your husband was quickly released?
there is a black stallion from 1950s television in the grid (and one of the word list words)
Hm...
He was released after midnight that night (so he couldnt take the subway home because that is one of the things they do to jack around people who have been arrested) and we ultimately won the case because a cop admitted that they had targeted him. . .
maybe the 60s but it was still black and white t.v.
my last word was a bird with a crest of hair.
wow jmc that is quite a story
nice allyall
congrats allyall
oh that is the stream lined version Dan. . .
I bet.
there were lots of nooks and crannies in the full version . . .haha
Congrats, allyall.
wow I bet
tach
oops
Free clue.
thanks scrabs!
no guess on the horse?
Tonto is not in the grid.
y'all may be to young for it. . .
co8 anybody?
Tonto was the Lone Ranger's faithful Indian sidekick. . .
Oh, right. Not the horse. Silver?
Silver was the Lone Ranger's horse. . .
This horse was the star of the show sorta like Lassie. . .
and remember it is a word in the grid. . .
I have no idea.
fu4/10
his best friend was Joey
I have the word but didn't know it was a horse's name.
haha I knew someone old enough would show up. . .
hi bugs
Saturday morning 9:00 where I lived. I loved it too jmc
fu** was always rearing up on his hind legs. . . .
Hi Babblers
hi wht!
loved that story about being honest with your kids as far as their understanding would allow. I raised my kids like that too.
Jmc, when I saw your clue I started to look for Flicka. :^)
Hi Bugsaw and wht
co 8 is the act of forcing someone to do something
hehe my friend. . . Flicka. . .
ty ally!
ty allyall
jmc, when I was arrested in DC in 1970 for lying on the sidewalk in front of the Selective Service office, I was released after midnight as well, and there wasn't any sidewalk.
I mean subway
I figured that the evening shift just pushed the work off onto the night shift.
yes wht. . . and there weren't many buses either at that time of night. . .
no, the paperwork is done. . . .it is just one of those little humiliations they sometimes do. . .
jmc, how are you. I haven't had a chance to chat with you for a while.
another fave DC tactic is to "process" protesters way down at the southern tip of the city, near the wastewater treatment plant
there's literally nothing & nobody else there
I haven't hung out in babble land much for a while. . . and lately I have been busy wearing my cape again. . .
true true dan
my brother was arrested once in a protest in Canada and when they found out he was a newspaper repoorter they couldn't get him out of the crowded cell fast enough. He refused to go. Made him a good man in my eyes
Oh, what battles are you fighting now, jmc.
Good for him, Bugsaw.
good on him. . . arresting the press is getting a little too common place these days. . . .
really wht I think you can guess. . . haha!
among other things I have been giving Active Bystander Intervention trainings and talks about the ciloing of America. . .
So maybe I should have asked what front are you fighting on.
hahaha
I think we need to ask whether there was interference at the state level and not just the presidential level. . .
we don't know how deep the poison goes do we?
Sounds like a worthy endeavor.
and I made my first foray into blog writing. . . always was a big essayist. . . seems like a great forum for that. . .
first essay was about my aunt who taught for 54 years. . .
firewords! tx lickety and allyall and Molly and ruru and all cluers. the dy8 was my last
And no we don't know how deep it goes. After all, the Koch fortune started out with Russian oil exploration. Some things do not seem to change.
congrats dan
whooo hooo dan2bit
Well jmc, I retired a month ago so now I am a gentleman of leisure.
wtg dan.
I can't even imagine what that means wht. . . .
that is the downside to self employed. . . hard to know when it ends. . .
Congrats, Dan.
jmc, I think it ends when people stop sending you checks. :^)
haha in that case I hope it never ends. . .
Wonderful, wht! I wish I could retire.
I went to check my front and back decks for raccoons making ruckuses but the noise is fireworks in the distance. I don't know why those are going off.
early Memorial Day?
There is a Conservation Club on the other side of the park so maybe they are having a celebration. They do skeet shooting year-round but at this time they open up their picnic shelter, pond, etc.
A celbration of Armed Forces Day? Or World Whiskey day?
mmmm whiskey. . . .
lovely though this is I think I will wander off. . . I am getting nowhere on this grid. . . too hard for a poser like me. . . . :)
Any clues for the au9, please.
good night all, nice chatting. . .
feel free to email me if you want. . .
be safe jmc
yikes - just noticed that there is a 9
thanks. . . *waves*
good night jmc.
au9 is au + consonant + foot part + frozen water part
Bye jmc. Great to see you here.
ty dan
ty dan
TY, Dan. New word for me. What is the other 8 besides co8?
hi all. need the second 8. i have co. please send stats and clues. ty
Second 8 is dy8,70
this is some nasty little grid
It is indeed Harry.
39 to go and still have 3 blank tiles
make that 2 :)
1 now :)
Middle row Y is blank.
just got that :)
Ah, me too.
yay scrab
clue for the lone a please?
ac7/44--sort of a statistician for insurance companies
It is a person who often works for insurance companies, Harry.
This person would calculate life expectancies and so on.
ooh good word
ty - nbt!
I was an ac7 for a short itme after college. even passed the first exam
And then what, Harry?
went back for my masters and worked for bell labs as a systems engineer
Aha.
then went back for my phd and became an environmental scientist
then had kids and became a teacher :)
Many life changes.
but I still want to be a farmer.
Now he's Master of Babble!
Hi JB
hah. master of very little, judging by my progress this evening
Hi Scrabbler, HH, !
I have that fantasy too, HH. I live out in the country amongst farmers and they humble me.
This was not an easy grid by any measure.
unfortunately, each move since our marriage has been getting more and more urban :(
Had family on a farm in Quebec during childhood. Very appreciative of farmers, but mud and muck are just not my thing!
Oh, no. I grew up in a suburb and expected to stay there. I have been living 30+ miles away in this rural area since 1988 and love it.
maybe in retirement. the kids are too invested in this life
32 left - I'm listing this aggravating grid.
I went the other way, HH, lived town and rural life in childhood, then got more and more citified. Give me a hotel over a tent any day!
Yeah, when I saw the letters and the word count, I listed right away. Bedtime is too close to tease out each word.
heh. bedtime here is very fluid :)
So, Scrabbler, when you are done call, do you just sleep in hospital before driving home?
Haha, JB. I am urban-phobic and get overwhelmed and overstimulated in cities. I am an introvert that loves living in the woods.
just got ru7 off of morewords. unreal.
We take call from home but there is always a chance that we might have to go into town to our tiny hospital for an emergency. It is a 12 minute drive. Almost always though, a sick kid gets transported up to Children's Hospital.
Can you give a clue Harry?
So cities get a high rise out of you scrabs?
I do live in a nice part of the city, and take the train to work in another nice part of the city, so I'm relatively comfortable and safe. I have lived in tents, and I have lived in luxurious hotels, and can be settled most anywhere.
Meaning, we don't have to go in to help, but there have been unexpected deliveries, or bad accidents (MVA or on farms) and a pediatrician is needed.
That is a weird one, right? I tried the first 4 letters as a word, but not in the dictionary.
I like living in farm country
Which children's hospital, Scrabb?
ruru, the housing leaves her flat.
wht: ru + fee **e fo fum - sometimes vowel + double vowel
Ruru, I truly get anxious--one-way streets, navigating, finding parking spots, dealing with traffic. I need lots of green space and no buildings or people.
I'm glad your drive is not long, Scrabbler. I worry for fatigued doctors and nurses driving home.
Sometimes one can't see the forest for the trees wht😀
Harry, I think that is about the oddest word I have seen, even in Babble.
High anxiety.
:) wht
or you can't see the forest for all the farm equipment........ tractors, combines, big equipment, I mean huge!!
thank goodness for morewords
Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo. But a new one is being built in the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus and will open in November. The name will change to John R. Oishei Children's Hospital.
Yes, snags, I have been stuck behind some massive farm equipment that has tires way taller than my SUV.
Fireworks finally, thanks to the cluers and Morewords.
hooray wht
Yay wht.
I was going to say something about massive equipment, but then remembered ruru is on, so I'm refraining.
right SCABBLER
He will say something, JB.
nothing is more scary then cresting a hill, and in the middle of the road, it one of the gps driven road hogs.................
And what's your hospital, Scrabbler, if you don't mind being specific? (I work at Ch Hosp of Philadelphia now)
30 left, the hockey game has ended, and I am exhausted, so off to bed I go. See you tomorrow kids.
Sleep well, Scrabbler!
Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, NY. We have, I think, 18 beds, [ we rarely admit a child/teen here, just very simple cases], but a very busy ED and other outpatient departments--X-ray, lab, PT, etc.
JB, please visit Tracy Widmer, a PNP at the Fetal Surgery Ctr. She was my former patient.
I interviewed at CHOP in Dec 1984. Way too big and busy for me, as was Philly.
good night Scrabs. And good night all.
I'll look her up. you can email me at jbsanno at gmail. I am admin support now for 5 of the neonatologists, and I'm sure they know her!
Night, wht! Sleep well!
And Kevin Osterhoudt went to med school here. I mentored him along the way. He is an ED doc.
Bye.
phew done.
hagn all
Yay, HH, well done! Good night! And good night all other Babblers still here!
