yes, they get breaks. additionally, I make them get up every hour to walk around, stretch, etc
I could not agree more, molly. the only people who benefit from it - and I am totally serious here - are the testing companies, and real estate agents

as an educator, these tests SUCK - we give up six school days to administer tests that do NOTHING to help the students. at all.
I try to do my part to educate people that the tests shouldn't be deal breakers. I've sat with enough educators that have explained how the testing is scored. But when people are moving to a new area, they go to test scores and school rankings to make their choice online, before they even see me!
As it happens, the area I sell in most of the time is on top of the heap score-wise, at the moment. So while the district doesn't want to lean on that, it's still a selling point.

To be the highest scoring and highest graded district in our county, which has over 2 million people in it and many school districts, is a very big deal, even if we all know that the testing doesn't mean as much as people think.
the new district I am in is just as challenging as my last, but in reverse ways. Many families in my last district were dirt poor, and really struggled to provide the school supplies, clothes, and just...FOOD their kids needed. This district is highly affluent, and the kids are completely stressed out, because their parents are not happy with high performing kids - they lean on them mercilessly to be the BEST kid, with the HIGHEST grade, with the MOST extracurriculars, going to the BEST college. These kids are exhausted from trying to live up to the demands of the parents, who really just want to impress their friends.
