Is no one here?

6:42 am

Hello, l'm here, quietly

6:42 am

I lurk, Scrabbler. Good morning.

good morning.

6:42 am

How much snow did you get, scrabs?

6:42 am

Morning, TO.

6:43 am

hello, TO

6:43 am

Morning, Ruby.

6:43 am

Hi there. How is everybody today?

6:43 am

Sorry good afternoon, Ruby.

6:44 am

Pabtrek: l lived in Binghamton a lifetime go

6:45 am

Yes, I think I seen you mention that before.

6:45 am

They're predicting the first snow here tonight

6:46 am

How much?

6:46 am

and the house is freezing

6:46 am

Gross Ruby. We had s now in November and I hated it.

it's going to get bitterly cold for the thanksgiving holiday.

6:47 am

And I am ready to snowshoe.

6:48 am

No Thanksgiving here. l did it for tne first 10 years or so, mostly for my husband's benefit, but the French people we invited never "got" it.

6:48 am

There is no day of giving thanks in France?

6:49 am

If not for the pups, l would stay in bed 'til April!

probably none here either. may cook a turky breast or get a marie callendar turkey dinner.

6:50 am

I am cooking everything but the turkey for my mother. My cousin is roasting the turkey.

ah, good that you do not have that task. what's for sides?

6:51 am

We used to go to Switzerland to buy the turkey, usually more than 100 dollars. Here they eat turkey only at Christmas

6:51 am

Mashed potatoes, yams, stuffing, biscuits, gravy, roasted veggies, and pies.

6:51 am

Ruby, if it were not for circumstances, you would be a guest at my Thanksgiving table.

my brother has a habit of inviting me late. a bit tired of it.

6:51 am

<-- Molly is the best!

6:52 am

Owl, where does he think you will have dinner?

i saw an article on msn about the amazing ingriedient for swqeet potatoes. i am thinking of suing since i've made them that way for years. on my own.

6:53 am

Maple syrup?

6:53 am

haha

i have no idea. half invited in MD but that would be stressful in all ways.

no, it was so bizarre to see it in print. i got tired of the syyrupy product that passed as canided yams so made a bit lighter version with ORANGE JUICE

still use butter, but less. nice fresh taste, cuts down on brown sugar. zest is nice as well.

maple syrup would be great. don't tell readers digest. ;)

not goopy sticky.

6:57 am

I make a mashed sweet potato casserole with a butter/brown sugar/flour/coconut/pecan topping. It is really good.

sounds nice. i think i've had a casserole, sans coconut.

6:58 am

It is one of those use coconut or don't recipes. My clan likes it with.

i make a thin syrup out of juice, butter- melting butter always uses lessp and juice, then add roasted potatoes, finish off in the oven to thicken and meld.

6:59 am

Since l'm alone, l just wrap them in aluminum, bake for a couple of hours and serve with butter and sour cream

7:00 am

Still after that elusive kilo

we never had sweet potatoes for the holiday growing up. just mashed.

i peel and steam them for the recipe.

7:00 am

I passed halfway. Time to get on with my day--shopping for mom and visiting her. See you in the morning.

7:01 am

bye scrabs

scrabs, are yo seeing a flu like illness up there? chills and fever, stomach ache?

7:01 am

We have sweet potatoes once a week here. Either baked, mashed, or fried.

my grandma made them, baked till the skin was black. i hated them as a kid, but try to have one baked every week.

7:02 am

76 left, and the >>>8, Always the 8!!!

7:16 am

A little Thanksgiving trivia, that sweet potato and marshmallow recipe that so many people love was started by a marshmallow company. (I have always wondered how that got to be such a thing for Thanksgiving)

i think the same about green bean casserole.

french fried oions in a can. who even thought that up?

7:34 am

BzzbBea, have you tried roasted sweet potatoes? Peeled, cut in chunks, tossed with olive oil and lemon pepper and roasted on a sheet pan, it's my favorite way now.

7:36 am

I do other veggies the same way...white potatoes, carrots, hard squash, onions ...love the way it caramelizes them.

7:39 am

sweet potato "fries" Don't even need to peel them, just scrub, cut into long wedges, then toss with olive oil and seasoning and roast at 425, turn once. crispy and caramelized

7:39 am

I love lemon pepper.. I use it all the time

7:40 am

hey ru, how's the air there?

7:41 am

sucky.. but will be better by thanksgiving.. it's finally going to rain here and that will help the firefighters

7:41 am

so glad you're getting rain. David is coming out tomorrow. haven't spoken to him lately though

7:42 am

coming out to NY?

7:42 am

actually to CT, Rachel

7:42 am

the air quality here has been hazardous for a while.. it's worse where origami lives.. by far though

7:43 am

Rachel is in CT? I thought Brooklyn?

7:43 am

hello friends. I am so sorry to read of how much damage is being done by the fires. what a tragedy all around

7:43 am

her boyfriend's house - that's where we're all gathering this year. I cook half the food but have to drive it up there

hello trif

7:44 am

that's not a good deal for Mom

7:44 am

I donated to the recovery fund in paradise.. those people are screwed

7:45 am

'morning, everyone

can anyone give an idea of moderately priced lego sets for 7 and 11 year old boys?

7:46 am

hi welki. not actually half, just seems like it And Jeremy is dropping the kids off here Wednesday night to help with some of it, as he and Liz drive on to CT

7:46 am

anything star wars, owl

7:46 am

sorry owl, I don't know. just check at store - or Amazon?

7:46 am

hello TO.

7:46 am

i hope you all have a great time

7:47 am

ruru, my friend in calif posted the most heartbreaking link to a poem someone wrote...let me see if I can find it, it was from a blog

7:47 am

well she has also invited all of Arthur's family, and then her father and his family. Will be insane

7:48 am

jeez.. how big is this guy's house?

7:48 am

here you go - https://tinyurl.com/ycca9edl

7:48 am

not big enough. it should be ---- interesting.

7:48 am

is it ok for you to go with your ex being there?

7:48 am

i highly recommend reading it - it gives amazing persepective

7:49 am

oops be right back - have to make a quizlet

7:49 am

won't be quite as nice, but she decided that since David rarely sees him (nor Jeremy and his family) it would be a good idea. I don't think anyone else agrees with her, but his sister and brother are happy to be seeing us all

7:50 am

just don't put your hands on any cream pies.. it will be fine

oh my, we were chatting earlier about sweet potatoes for the holiday. watching a chef with sweet potatoe whip made with grand marnier.

7:51 am

i'll be good.

welk how goes it?

7:52 am

that actually works well TO.. I've made it.. you use orange juice and grand Marnier and orange zest and a crumbled amaretto cookie topping

7:52 am

I've never understood why they take sweet potatoes, which are naturally sweet and tasty, and mess them up with a lot of sugar and marshmallows. Most sweet potato dishes are more like dessert than a vegetable. Not my taste.

7:52 am

That does certainly sound better

7:53 am

doing okay, owl - thanks

i developed years ago a lightened candied sweet potato recipe - i do not like mashed- with organe juice and saw this as a revelation on line this week. i may sue. ;)

juice replaces much sugar, not disgustingly syrupy sugary.

7:55 am

much better..

tastier. orange makes the potatoes so fresh.

don;t even talk to me about geen bean casserole.

7:57 am

ok, i won't. Gotta run. Happy babbles

7:57 am

In my experience with Legos, there is no such thing as a "moderately priced Lego set".

7:57 am

i could never eat green bean casserole

well, what is the price point? buying for giving tree. the requests were so sweet, but i am thinking if i take one child , i should also tkae his brother, so both get sort of the same gift point of view.

7:59 am

guess it depends on what your idea of 'moderate' is - amazon has some sets for $16

8:00 am

(they also have some at $160!)

i was thinking in the $20-$25 range. i want to sponsor both kids.

8:01 am

they have lots in between, owl

i think they each wanted something else, but do not remember. smaller things. lots of kids said "anything"

if it's the only thing they are gettting, it should be a bit better than baisc, but not those village $100 things.

8:02 am

16$ for a Lego set? That is great. I guess my kids always asked for the more expensive ones.

thank you, i will begin browsing over the weekend.

8:03 am

Oh wow, they now make a Lego Nativity set.

i have another community question. has anyone here ever purchased and used a FrostGuard winsheild coverfor their vehicle?

8:04 am

it's hard to buy for kids when you don't know what their interests are - especially for teens/pre-teens

for toy dirves i tend to go classic- games, arts sets, trucks, etc.

8:04 am

not here (the land of block heaters and remote start)

i guess a little snow on the windshiled is a minor irritation.;)

my brother and his wife park their cars outside.i may get one for me, i hate it when you park at the traina nd come back to a mess.

otherwise, my new baby is garaged.

8:08 am

have you driven it on snowy/icy roads yet? how's it handle?

i have a frostguard and love it.

handles well. have not noticed a difference yet, conditions not there. the tech is distracting, i must be careful.

lady, thank you! bro and sil are hard to buy for.

wait a minute, i remember firing the groves in central FL but really! :0

you are pulling my leg!

absolutely not. North central FL gets low thirties and even if I don't use it for snow the frost can be really thick. last year I used it lots.

saves me lots of time at 5am.

near winter haven?

Ocala area

ah, yes. beautiful area.

again, thanks for the review.

yw.

9:07 am

hello again peeps

9:08 am

HiTrif, Bernice

9:08 am

the co teacher brought in donuts - hooray!

9:09 am

im trying to get more lard in my diet. lol

9:15 am

I thought they fried donuts in veg oil now?

9:16 am

Soybean oil?

9:18 am

they probably do. i was just being silly

9:19 am

Although, most things tasted better when they were fried in lard. McDonald's french fries comes to mind.

9:22 am

hi all.

9:22 am

any clues for the 8? ty

9:25 am

pl of the 7 ch 8/70

9:25 am

difficult to clue

9:26 am

serious question from a student - "why doesn't the teacher give us the study guide with all the answers filled in? If I had that, I could study. When I have to find out the answers myself, they might not be right, and then I will have studied the wrong thing. Why do we have to find the answers ourself?" me: slams head into desk until it's numb

9:27 am

The life of Trif

9:27 am

tough.

9:27 am

ty bichon. am looking for the ch 7. dont have it

9:28 am

god help us all - these are the people that will care for us in the nursing home.....our future doctors and police officers (well, probably not that kid)

9:28 am

Wow, Trif. How old was that student?

9:28 am

14

9:28 am

the ability to do hard work or thinking is disappearing......

9:29 am

god bless her, I think the problem is, that somewhere along the line a desperate teacher probably DID provide that for students, in a last ditch effort to get them to learn ANYTHING - problem is, that is no way to learn at all.

9:29 am

Double wow. I would save that question for the next parent/teacher conference and pose the same question to the parent(s).

9:30 am

Our entire education system has always rewarded being able to regurgitate the "correct" answers over encouraging and nurturing independent thought. My kid got an F on an English paper. I called the teacher (only time I ever did this). Why the F? It was well written and well argued. "I didn't like his premise," quotha.

9:30 am

I called the teacher (only time I ever did this). Why the F? It was well written and well argued. "I didn't like his premise," quotha.

9:30 am

my husband went to phillips academy in Andover mass. a fine prep school. his prof. in american history told him that even 25 years ago he could not assign the kids all the books to read that he assigned when my husband was his student because the kids cant sit still and read and cant get through it........TV was his feeling of what ruined it. very sad.

9:30 am

Google will tell us everything.

9:30 am

my husband is now an MD and sees the younger MDs unable to think outside the box.

9:30 am

dont even get me started on the parents - they would probably ask us why were weren't giving her the answers

9:30 am

phillips academy is a GREAT school

9:31 am

but it was much different in the 1960s......today it is a watered down version...........

9:31 am

off to work. back later.

9:31 am

that is some bullsh*t right there, natasha, I am so sorry - that would NEVER happen in my class

9:32 am

Everything is watered down. Adults now read YA "literature." Even my son, who's no slouch in the brains dept, says he hasn't got the patience to read War and Peace.

9:32 am

to be fair, a LOT of YA now is excellent - very well written with great themes. I can't write off the entire genre.

9:33 am

and War and Peace DOES require a commitment, for sure. From my point of view, 140 characters and texting have RUINED the ability to craft longer, well worded essays, letters, etc.

9:33 am

I'm not writing it off! It's very appropriate for young people.

9:33 am

I have always loved to read, however, War and Peace never appealed to me at all.

9:34 am

Best book I ever read. Took me 4 tries to get into it. Chapter 1 is tough going. But after that it is the finest piece of literature ever (IMHO)

9:34 am

i absolutely love to read, but Im an english teacher, so there you go....apple --> tree

9:34 am

the "peace" part appeals, lol

9:34 am

Never could get started on Moby Dick either.

9:36 am

I try to mix up my reading - fiction and non. I tend to read a lot more non fiction, and do like to challenge myself to read what are considered "substantial" or at least "classic" books when I have the time to devote to heavier reading, like during breaks. Moby Dick just about did me in last summer - what a miserable slog! Other books, like Anna Karenina, have become good friends

9:36 am

Anyway the teacher backed down after admitting the paper was both well written and cogently argued. He got a C for failing to think like her.

9:36 am

What I didn't like about college in the 60's: you had to take a foreign language up to 5 semesters. One class we had to read Don Quixote in old Spanish.

9:36 am

LOVE Anna Karenina. The scene where Levin is scything the field and spots Kitty riding by in a carriage...

9:37 am

The two that have me beat are Ulyssess and A Confederancy Of Dunces. Once I put them down I just could NOT pick them up again

9:37 am

I REALLY hate that Natasha - UGH!

9:37 am

I have discovered the key to James Joyce is not reading it but hearing it read aloud. Went to a Bloomsday on Broadway event in NYC one year and finally understood him!

9:38 am

Wait, I thought you liked Anna K/

9:38 am

I would have produced a copy of the syllabus and asked her to show you where "must think exactly like me" is a required element to succeed in this class

9:38 am

no, no, i really hate what the teacher said to you

9:49 am

lololol - i told a student how proud I was of the hard work he has done today, and he smiled and said "THX muchacho!" which both made me chuckle, and underscores my point here about the influence of texting

9:56 am

16 words left. Time for a break. *POOF*

10:02 am

She knocked his F back to a C so I let it go

1:28 pm

Would someone please tell me where the list of approved Babble words are? I'm still a newbie and finding my way around. BTW, what does "listing" mean? Thx!

1:32 pm

hello mac - just under the grid you will find "Lickety's Babble Clues" - using this list is "listing"

1:40 pm

Thanks Ursh! :) Now to find where the list of approved words are located. Like my glasses, I had them a minute ago...

1:42 pm

oh Mac, you don't need them, just type anything in, if it works it works if it doesn't it doesn't. we sometimes monkey type just to find a word that works that no-one really knows what it is.

1:46 pm

LOL. I have been doing that a LOT. ;) Have no clue, just flying blind! Had a stroke recently, then severe seizures, this is helping me test the dust left in my head.

1:48 pm

hey mac - nothing like babble to test the dust - you are obviously doing well to even tackle a word game - welcome - welcome - welcome

1:52 pm

mac - check out Sprite's icon - she has a list of "Babblets" - the weird/interesting words that are common to Babble ... and used probably nowhere else on the planet!

1:53 pm

roof

1:54 pm

oops. Okay. Where did you guys hide the PB - I was expecting a treat!

2:01 pm

Thanks for the tips all. :)

2:13 pm

and welcome to Babble, mac. You don't have to finish a grid to enjoy it. Just do as much as makes you happy and know another one will come along tomorrow at midnight US Central time.

2:19 pm

TY. I enjoy it and the fact that you have 24 hrs. No way I will ever finish one, but that's okay. If I ever type anything crazy in here, it may be another seizure/black out. They come out of nowhere and then I Babble/Ramble. Nightmare, will spare the details. Have fun everyone!

SMOKE MASKS - Important for anyone can SEE the smoke, is coughing, or is within 100 miles of California wildfires. Do not settle for a drugstore or surgical mask. It is not "better than nothing"- it IS nothing. Try a good hardware store for a P-100 mask or if you have any breathing problem, an N95 respirator.
