I used Jabberwocky as a basis for kids to write their own poems once - great results.
i use it to show kids that you don't have to know what every word mean in order to identify the part of speech of words. you can see what must be a noun, verb, or adjective based on the structure.
it's a fun grammar exercise
Good fun. Less fun than getting them to write nonsense poems though!

i had some students who were super reluctant when it came to creativity
they would just freeze up and write nothing
But giving them the chance to write nonsense - I paired the class up with each other.

we wrote new year's poems last year, and this one girl was so convinced she could not write poetry, she just sat there saying she couldn't do it for the longest time. but when she finally pushed through that she actually did better than most of the other kids. go figure
