i don't envy their regular teachers

Ha. I’ve just returned to the safe haven of Soodleville having spent a week minding my 4 month old grandson. Kids are bloody hard work. Fair play to you Hurshy. I certainly wouldn’t have the patience to do it full-time.
well, it really does depend on the kids
i've been subbing for a week and a half in different classrooms at different schools
and some have been great
i wouldn't have the patience to do it full-time in the sense of parenting, lol. at least with school you get away from them at the end of the day.

the last two years i was teaching full time, but this summer i moved, and i couldn't get my certification transferred to my new state fast enough to get a full time job this year, hence, subbing.
the last two years were SUPER stressful and exhausting (my first two years of teaching!)
but i'm HOPING that was because of particular factors about the job and school that i had
if i do it again for a few more years and it's just as bad, i won't keep with it, i don't think.
I wish you all the very best Hursh. You do a tough job, that’s for sure. Unrewarding for a lot of the time, but I’m sure that there are high points as well. Enjoy the good bits, & grit your teeth for the harder bits.

i wonder if we have more kids with those kind of issues as time goes on because of the fact that we don't let natural selection act upon human beings
it's funny, too, because given how technology is developing, we don't necessarily need all humans in the future to be productive members of society. maybe someday we can just have ... idk ... places for the ones who don't seem like they can handle it, where they can just do what they want and we don't have to bother trying to make them learn
it just seems like it's not fair to the other kids, their education clearly suffers from these few highly distracting cases

when one brainstorms, one thinks of anything, and then one discards the ideas that wouldn't be good.
Special education is the result of a place for kids who have difficulty in regular classrooms. We have a great special education system in this country. I'm sorry the student in question in this conversation is not there.
it's not one particular student, molly. i was saying there were a lot in the grade where i substitute taught today. i think a lot of schools have moved away from special education and try to "mainstream" more of the kids in regular classrooms in some places.
and of course, i have no idea how this particular school makes the call of whether to put a kid in special ed or not
It's getting harder and harder to get kids classified for special services in some districts which already have too high a proportion, as per the state dept. of education. which is shameful - there should not be a quota system
yeah. and so many resources go into helping kids at the low end, that most districts don't end up putting any into enrichment for kids at the high end, which i think is a detriment to society, since they are the ones who have the potential to solve our big problems.
don't get me wrong, i definitely want the kids at the low end... well, all the kids really! ... to have happy, healthy lives.

i feel like the emphasis for those kids is sort of on getting them enough skills that they can obtain and keep some kind of minimal-skill job. and i'm not sure that actually is that good at giving them a happy healthy life. and if tech keeps replacing those types of jobs... what are the alternative ways we can start thinking about how to produce human happiness?

well, molly, it's just an interesting conundrum that we have as human beings. take allergies, or eyesight. because we don't just let people die from allergies, and because people no longer get eaten by predators if they have bad eyesight, those people survive and reproduce. so as time passes, there are more and more people with allergies and bad eyesight. obviously it's a good thing that we don't just let people die! i don't think we should! but we should be aware that this corollary exists.
i've often thought about that too Hursh, but who makes the decision? tough one for future generations, unless climate change decimates populations
the decision isn't to let people die, obviously. that would not be moral. but the thing i was pondering was, if whatever sorts of "things" a person have make it hard for them to be "normal" enough to function in certain situations, how do we create a society that allows them to live and flourish without expecting them to necessarily sit still for hours in classrooms or hold a 40 hour a week job as adults?
i mean, let's face it, for many "normal" people, their jobs are a source of misery, never mind for those who can't meet basic social expectations. if climate change doesn't destroy us, advancing technology could likely allow us to reshape what life looks like for people in general. unless we continue to let the billionaires reap all the rewards and let the rest of the people fall by the wayside.
anyway, sorry if this rather intense brainstorming of mine bothered anybody. i gotta go, my dinner is ready. ttfn all!
