I've been doing a boot camp gym for a few months. sometimes I walk/run there but too cold today! I had to quit playing soccer this summer because my knee is sketchy. it does okay, though it is a little jacked up right now from a hike on Sat.
I also like to mountain bike but haven't been doing that much either.

ruru, Port Townsend has an annual Kinetic Sculpture Race, which I know you would get a kick out of. Beloved husband and I happened to be on a mini-vacation last month and saw some of it.
Friends of ours just retired to Squiem, Washington, which is right by Port Townsend. BUT ... it's in a rain shadow, so gets less rain each year than anywhere on the peninsula. Quite a pretty town too.

so, question about serpentine...how am I losing or gaining points? I know how scoring works in boggle but this doesn't seem the same and I don't see an explanation on the website.
you mean your rating? your points are collected and compared to other players - you gain points, your rating (usually) goes up, if you lose points, rating goes down. probably some complicated algorithm
the site says: The ratings in Serpentine are a determination of your skill level as a player. When you first start playing, everyone gets ten unrated games to practice, then Serpentine will estimate what it thinks your skill level is, and put you in the appropriate rating group.
last long post - here's what it says about scoring in individual games: Scoring You get 1 point for each three letter word For each additional letter over three letters, you get an additional point. (i.e. 2 points for a four letter word, 5 points for a 7 letter word) If you are the first person in the match to get a word, you get an additional one point bonus
yeah, I read that, but I see my score after a round and then my ratings points in parentheses. sometimes I lose more points than someone with a lower score.
I think it may have to do with that sliding scale underneath the word box. it appears the longer I wait between the more that goes negative.
yeah, that's how it works - if a higher ranked player and a lower ranked player end up with the same number of points, the higher ranked player will generally lose more points (because the game 'recognizes' that it might have been more difficult for the lower ranked player to achieve that many points
(likewise, the higher ranked player will earn less points than the lower ranked player - same reason)
keep at it, you'll see the method to the madness with time

there are a bunch of us that used to play a game called tangleword - when that went belly up, a nice young guy started serpentine and we migrated to his site. some of us 'know' each other for 20 years or more!
There are some really good players in that game. Really good.

I'm not very good. I will have a ranking about 1100 and then lose a lot and wind up at 850 or so for a while. I pretty much suck.
sometimes, a new player will be VERY good in a round, which causes the higher ranked players to lose mega-points.
can be frustrating, but the rounds don't take much time and they're fun
