All done. Have a good day, all.
missed matty but found her in the grid
Hey, Carla. How are you?
hey bea, I'm good - how are you?
I'm loving this cool weather!
was surprised when I took the dog out. my watch says it's 58
Isn't it funny? We used to look at thermometers for temperature. Now we look at phones and watches.
yeah, no idea if it's actually 58 at my house as my watch pulls from a weather app and I'm not sure where they are measuring
we can also ask alexa these days ;)
It's 57 here and it feels wonderful.
Oh yes, I forgot about Alexa. We don't use her much.
we don't either.
she's in the kitchen so sometimes I ask her for conversions
You can ask that thing on your phone that talks to you too.
Siri
yep, I really never ask siri things
I am always asking siri things.
I want siri to just tell me things but he (I have mine set to be english male) just says "I found this on the web"
I have to Hey Google, I don't have an iPhone
I see today's a's are no better than the rest of the week (minus yesterday) or I need coffee.
Good short A's today.
well I have 2
4
and I keep wanting atom
It's there, just not in the corect order. =)
ooh, just finished them! not as hard as I thought
We can have atmo, short for atmosphere. Enable won't take it though.
yeah, as a firefly fan, I have tried that before
and I said I wasn't trying spam today but then I accidentally did
How is your Mom doing, Carla?
she's doing pretty good. I don't know if I mentioned her car wouldn't start the day of the burial, but she had that towed away on Fri. before I left. not sure when it'll be fixed but she really doesn't need to be driving or going out in public anyway.
I don't like it looking like no one's home though.
her sister offered to take her anywhere
she was basically trapped at home months before covid so I'm sure she wants to go places, but there's not anywhere to go.
and her osteoporosis & arthritis in her back is causing a lot of pain there and in her hips. but mentally I think she's doing good.
I saw this today: Thirty days hath September, April, June and November. All the rest have thirty one, excepting February alone. And 2020 which has 5364.
so true
well I've made it to 22 left
can I have some stats for the 1st col o? p&ty
I have 0 left...

Hello, welki.

a neighbor gave me a couple of bags of the most beautiful, uniform beets - other than simply roasting (boiling/steaming) and shredding raw (and making chips) - any recipes? not going to pickle them
(please and thank you)
suppose i could make borscht
hmm, I used beets for the first time ever in the last year when they came in one of those meal kits. I roasted them as directed (and they were delicious), so I am no help, sorry.
I always eat mine the way you have listed. I'm no help either.
one of my daughters suggested with balsamic and goat cheese, but all i have is white vinegar
you can use cooked beets in a cake like carrot cake
ooh, I love me some goat cheese. that sounds yummy.
i'd have to make up a name for the cake, deeha - husband would balk! (but boyhowdy, i made a cake yesterday that was a hit - called do nothing texas tornado cake - a TON of sugar, so only the tiniest piece for me)
purple cake ;)
dont you have red velvet cakes? tell him it is one of those!
yes, we have them here - could try that :)
That Texas Tornado Cake looks good, but very sweet
IMO a cake should be very sweet

ok... keep typing a sp4 word... doesn't say it's not a word but that it's not in the grid... but it is~ So strange!
Same experience...do you suppose Hormel is to blame?
could be... or we could chalk it up to COVID-19 -- seems to be screwing everything else up... lol
Just heard from Dr. God...spam will finally be added to the dictionary.
good to know. I tried it today
About time.
While we're onto words that need to be added, how about oaky? Describing the kind of chardonnay I tend to avoid.
Yes and oaty.
Indeed...now that we're all baking more.
And mosh, describing punk rocker pits, though maybe that is archaic by now.
Not heard that word for a while now haha. Not my scene must admit!
Nor mine...but it's in the puzzles a lot.
*imagines Jan in Spiky Green hair and a nose piercing*
It is funny how the word modem is okay yet internet is not.
Nor tech...though it comes in both high and low varieties.
A friend of mine is president of the American Dictionary Society--I should ask him sometime about how words get in and why others do not.
Ethnic foods seems to be particularly random in Enable; some in, others not.
Whoops, grammar fail...
Wow, Dr. God has the ability to add words to the Enable word list? Good for him.
I think years ago he entered 'steno' in.
Speaking of words that may be archaic these days...
I wonder why spam will be added and not all the other words people wonder about.
but spam predates its current usage
Isn't that earlier spam a trademarker proper noun? My daughter went to the Spam Museum on her way out to college. Sent us a gel candle in a spam tin!
yes - but it then became a generic term in the UK, in part at least due to Monty Python in the 1970s
Yup, "spam, spam, sausage and spam hasn't got *much* spam in it..."
I have no idea who actually controls Enable. But those who download Enable can add and delete words from the 'official' list if they choose to.
It's interesting to know that Dr. God has control over what words are allowed and what words are not.
I will pass that along the next time the chat turns to words that are not allowed.
Anybody who downloads Enable can adapt it as they like. Some word games remove the "naughty" words, some remove non-words like pfft.
And of course, you can also add words. Enable is pretty dated, so a lot of modern words in common use aren't there.
Oh wow, all the people who complain about the offensive words will be interested to know that.
Well, policing all the offensive words might be a challenge. Seems like ethnic slurs and sexist slurs are an infinitely renewable resource...
Yeah, but if he is going to add spam, people who have complained about the offensive words might wonder why they can't be removed.
That's up to Dr. God. I guess that's why is isn't Dr. Elected Official.
well, enable doesn't recognise 'minge', and yet it does for synonyms of same.
By the way, the current version of Enable is Enable2k, which dates to about the turn of the century. So it isn't surprising that a lot of contemporary terms aren't in it.
Minge is a new one for me, I guess I don;'t get out enough...
"people" don't complain about the offensive words per se, "people" complain about the gamers who think some of those words are not racial or ethnic epithets. Especially words that have no other meaning.
These are not simply "naughty" words, they are offensive slurs. I have already been in conversation about this, so I don't need to go back over it, but there is actually a chance for educating each other bout why some words are offensive to various groups.
minge has been around for a long time. I recall my Gran being annoyed when she overheard me calling my cousin a minging little tart.
that was in the 70s.
I am not familiar with that word.
Kaplan, I completely concur. There is a substantial list of racially offensive words allowed in usage here.
The merely scatological --olde English-is another thing entirely.
A common reaction is to turn it around so that the offended- or hurt- member of the group is "too sensitive," "taking it the wrong way" or demanding censorship and political correctness. In this era- or any er when groups of people are under attack, the last thing that should be said is "you're too sensitive."
As Groucho said, as he put is portfolio on the lawyer's bench, "I rest my case"
What is "minge" or do I have to look it up?
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh.
stats for the left column O please?
my grid says "spam does not exist in the puzzle" Is that prophetic, I wonder?
that's just a mistake. That's just gaslighting.
I'm looking at spam right now.
Oh Kaplan, I'm glad you are here. Maybe if Dr. God is willing to add spam, he will remove the word you don't care for, and other words that people find offensive.
I'm also reading the chat, and it says that Dr God (such hubris) CAN choose to remove racial slurs.
It's more than a word I don't care for, it's a historically ugly concept that has no other meaning than an anti-Semitic slur. I did email Dr God about it, and the n-word, and now I'm thinking the c4 word...Dr God of course did not respond.
Wow, really? No response? And yet he told that player who posted earlier that spam would be added. Wow.
To the Irish, the word Paddy as in Paddy Wagon is a slur, but there are also rice paddies, so another meaning can be argued. There are a couple of permitted anti-Italian slurs. A chink may be a chink in the painted wall, spic MAY have another meaning, but probably not (spic n' span) . Coon could be a raccoon, but the n-word and jew as a verb are unambiguous.
Some of the female genitalia words may be used in Victorian pornography, but I think too many women have experienced denigration, so I usually cringe at the c word, and would be happy to see it relegated to the place where spam is currently.
Pricks and dicks have other meanings.
trump is a word with a meaning so it trumps Trump.
In local news, there is a lake in Montana called Coon Lake and the locals are petitioning to change the name. It was NOT named after raccoons.
I believe that. And all the bridges that are named after slaveholders- like where John Lewis walked--need to be renamed. They are not holy sites.
i find it interesting that the c word bothers some women so much, and yet the pu5 word doesn't seem to.
Cats.
Well, in defense of Montanans, in the sixties it was called N***** Lake and they changed it to Coon Lake.
C4 is meant to be degrading and has no other meaning. I would have to go to the OED to find out its history. The history of jewing down I'm familiar with.
Yeah, but in certain context, it means the same thing. Why one word and not the other? My guess is that it is a word used in big fights between men and women. But maybe not.
Harpjane, is that true? That's wild!
They changed it from n to c thinking ...what WERE they thinking
So, in a sense, the Montana people thought they were doing the right thing, for the sixties.
I know, Kalplan. It's horrifying to think of it now.
In the South there was something called the Jew Store. But the Jewish shipowners were not offended by it- it was usually a kind of general store owned by Jewish merchants.
Pu5 is used in a degrading way. Men who are "wimpy" are referred to as pu7. Why are women not offended that their genital parts are used as a term to represent weak?
People relied on the Jew Store. In my city in Massachusetts there was a Jew hospital, because Jewish Doctors were not allowed to practice at Somerville Hospital in the earlier 20th century. It was located right behind the one synagogue. It is no longer there.
Usually the Jew Store was a dry goods store.
The p word keeps evolving. POTUS used it and suddenly there were "Karens" with t-shirts saying "Trump can grab MY p5 anytime.
"Karen" is not a term for middle aged white women with blonde hair who want to speak to the manager right now.
There are Beckys who are younger women of privilege and entitlement. I did a body scan to see if I felt any antiSemitism in the use of that name, then thought no- Aunt Becky was Lori Laughlin who is going to jail for the college admission bribery
These are just current trends.
hi all, right two columns done, woot
ooh, we talking about slang? very yummy
I'm just missing a v. And I don't have any longer words there.
We're talking about trendy epithets and appalling epithets
there's a va5/20, builds off another v
(some) white women who learn that black people have been calling them Karens for *years* are now offended by it and think they can stop it by complaining about it, thus proving that they are Karens LOL
Dr. God seems to be only sporadically caring for this site. Maybe if it required a fee to join he'd pay more attention. I know that Iron Sudoku's chat became a cesspool of extreme political argument before finally he stepped in and banned that kind of chat. But it went on for months before he took action.
**finito** last word - a frontiersman's name, finished without a list
wtg teach !!!!!!!!
Killed him a b'ar when he was only three...
one could report offenders to Dr. God but there's no reasons for him to do anything about it, necessarily, I mean
The issue here is rather different; it isn't players misbehaving but the nature of words that count for points in the game. I won't type them myself--since I hardly ever finish anyway, I prefer to ignore them. But I do understand that others, quite reasonably, feel differently. And I could not recommend that kids play this game, unfortunately.
you mean all the offiensive words allowed? there's no point, really, arguing about that, at least in my experience, because no one is going to change it
That is interesting Jan. People not only recommend that kids play this game, they get their grand kids into it.
Well, I wouldn't myself. Maybe if you don't play a lot, you don't see those words crop up. But I would hate to have to explain some of them to, say, my eight year old granddaughter.
there's another site where I play a versin of Boggle and the word list bizarrely accepts dozens of plurals for which they don't accept the singular -- as if someone copied a dictionary then willy nilly deleted some words, leaving their plurals in
Personally, I don't find words accepted in a word game offensive. To me, words are only offensive when they are used towards someone else.
offensive (and derogatory, there's a difference)words are often "rehabilitated" and become positive again -- it's evolution
2/3 done, hair tearing beginning
Those are the hard cases, Gwen, where often they are acceptable in in-group use but not when out-group speakers use them. Usually that's because the 'reclaimed' slur is still being used offensively by others.
a good example is "queer" which has lots of meanings, one of which used to be derogatory
Unfortunately, in some mouths it still is derogatory. There
Whoops--too quick on the send...
certainly, but for the most part, it is not offensive
spam is not a word in this grid. ugh
ottoman (phantom)
That's why I probably wouldn't nuke it if I were Dr. God, since most of its uses have nothing to do with sexual orientation. On the other hand, there are plenty of words that almost always offensive. If I were Dr. God, those would go.
spam is still slang, at least according to some dictionaries
And the four letter words and derivations that George Carlin famously said you can't say on TV? Those would go, too. But I'm not Dr. God, so they're in. (At least for now...)
Which goes back to my original point. Why would Dr. God agree to add spam and not agree to get rid of words deemed "offensive"?
Who can say? Laziness? Lack of interest in the issue? Too hard to make judgments? Dunno...
yes, but our language changes so fast, he would be continuously having to open up the game, add words, take words out, and each time he would do this, he would piss someone off, so it's not worth it (is my guess)
Language changes but not all that fast. Most new usages vanish quickly. Adding new words every year or so would keep Enable current--the last iteration of Enable is 20 years old, and for all I know, Dr. God may be using the original, much older version.
For example, currently Enable doesn't take 'tech' as a word, but clearly "high tech" "low tech" "tech workers" etc. are used constantly in speech and writing. He added 'steno' once, a long while ago, for reasons he didn't share in chat, so he knows it can be done.
Archaic words, other than offensive ones, don't need to be removed. So 'saith' can stay, even though nobody uses it anymore.
Okay...no more on this from me. I am procrastinating, avoiding writing a proposed abstract for a linguistics conference, ironically enough!
if i had time i could probably come up with 50 new words that have become more or less commonn in the past 10 years (just as an example: influencer)
fireworks!
I think the word that was added was "stent"
wishing you luck with the linguistics conference, jan !! bye all
Molly, you are right! I mis-remembered that!!
Getting an abstract accepted for an academic conference is like winning a pie eating contest in which the prize is more pie.
Getting back to it...I don't find something in a grid as offensive as people who think it is a valid word to use conversationally
Yes, good luck Jan. I am terrified about presenting in conferences, so I only do it in small groups, and not annually
Yes, more pie.
are you familiar with mondegreens? Lady Mondegreen?
A mondegreen /ˈmÉ’ndɪɡriËn/ is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase in a way that gives it a new meaning. Mondegreens are most often created by a person listening to a poem or a song; the listener, being unable to clearly hear a lyric, substitutes words that sound similar and make some kind of sense.[1][2] American writer Sylvia Wright coined the term in 1954, writing that as a girl, when her mother read to her from Percy's Reliques, she had misheard the lyric "layd him on the green" in the fourth line of the Scottish ballad "The Bonny Earl of Murray" as "Lady Mondegreen".[3] "Mondegreen" was included in the 2000 edition of the Random House Webster's College Dictionary, and in the Oxford English Dictionary in 2002. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary added the word in 2008.[4][5]
help with the ot(s) please
Musical term I think. Starts like an interval of 8 notes
Forget the starts like. No c!
Excuse me while I kiss this guy
A short version of misheard lines. Jimi Hendrix, "excuse me while I kiss the sky".
Blinded by the light..swept up like a douche is my favorite mondegreen
i think you mean revved up like a Deuce
oh.. i get it...
swept up like a douche would describe the Rebulican Senate though
that's republican senate..
speaking of the word douche .. the other day I saw a cup with "Toodaloo douchecanoe" lolol
How is it that 'spam' is not a word?
tells me it's not in the puzzle tho clearly it is
Weird - I think it used to say it wasn't in the dictionary.
Wierd
what are the stats for the left column O please?
ot 6/27 and 7/40
thanks
