Well, the other day someone said Dr. God was adding spam to the acceptable words. So maybe that is still a work in progress. I still don't get why that gets added and some of the words people are offended by are not deleted.

BzznBea, racial and ethnic slurs are well-known, and do not take up the whole grid. When they're present they jump out, and points are given for them. And they are hurtful and demeaning words with no other potential meaning.

Again, like the "jewed" example, it brought out that some babblers felt it was not insulting to talk about the Jewish trait of driving a hard bargaining, believing it as an actual trait, and not a centuries old anti-Semitic stereotype that causes harm. I would rule out hicks, cops and Lagos. Other words can be argued as having two meanings.
I find it a huge stretch that anyone does not see the contempt in the word jewed.
I'm repeating myself a lot on this issue, but again, it's not the PRESENCE of the word, but that some do not know the ugly history, and might even think it a compliment that is upsetting.

I would suggest that those of us who feel that words nike the n word, jew as a verb, dago, wop and mick be dropped from point scoring words, and contemporary words like spam, and other internet era words be added. Perhaps if more of us addressed the issue, then we could change it. I'm not happy with the cu4 word wither. Other words have double meanings so they could be argued for.

People have argued for and against words here for years. They have always been told that Dr. God is not interested in modifying the word list. That is why I was so surprised that he agreed to add spam.

In order to change what shows up on a web site, you have to rewrite the code for the site. It can take a while. Especially with a complex site like this.
spam began as a proper trademarked name of the meat product. it wasn't *that* long ago that scrabble started allowing it because of the way it began being used to mean unsolicited email. Which name it got from an absurd Monty Python skit about the meat product

Most of the Confederate statues were put up in the 1920s (ish) specifically to intimidate Black voters. They have no time and place, in my opinion, now. We don't have statues of Hitler to 'remind' us of an unpleasant time. And also, Firefly is brilliant and despite the fact the actor (Adam Baldwin) is a tit, the Hero of Canton is still amazing ;)

hi all.. I don't agree with the destruction of the statues. I think of the saying, "run it up the flagpole and see who salutes". As we evolve, the "bad" statues are markers of our progress and could be used as teaching tools. A part of our history, not to be adored but as markers of our progress as human beings.

I think they are identifying themselves and I like to know if they are around me.
Statues in parks, in front of court houses, polling places, town halls - they are there to intimidate. Sure, you want to create a museum of stupid statues? Knock yourself out. But there are many that are unregarded and unnoticed...except by those they are specifically meant to intimidate. No-one complained (here) when the statue of Saddam Hussein was famously toppled - no-one said it should be left in place to 'educate' the people. The same is true of the Confederate statues. And also, we have BARELY moved on since the Civil Rights movements in the 60s - indeed, in some cases the US (and other countries) have move backwards - school segregation, for example, is higher than it's been since the 60s and before. Sometimes, direct action is necessary to effect real change. Because real change hasn't really happened.

I used to be young. But, unless someone says otherwise, we're all white people, many of a certain age. Perhaps we should listen to the folk of colour who are most affected by these statues, and by systematic racism. I'll get off my soapbox now, but it does, occasionally, need to be said.

I think public displays of symbolism are all going to become a thing of the past. No statues of any kind, because they are bound to offend someone. This stuff started back when people protested public displays of Nativity scenes.

i think it is bizarre that confederate statues are there to start with. they lost the war and many americans were killed during the battles and so it is time to move on and get rid of honoring these confederate men. there is a you tube by a black man from the ACLU THAT IS BRILLIANT! he is well spoken and he points out why blacks are offended by statues of men who advocated for their enslavement.......the same is true of confed flags. they basically stand for being pro slavery!

Here's the thing - if we get stopped by the police, or get called in for a teacher meeting, or anything that involves the 'establishment' as white people, we feel safe and that those establishment figures are there to protect us. We look at statues and think 'those people are heroes in our eyes' - they're (typically) white men who, we are taught, died for OUR freedom. But Black people don't have that luxury. They know that they may be shot, knelt upon or arrested for...driving while Black. They know that the school may be calling them to exclude or punish their child...even for transgressions that a white child would get detention at best ... or they may find their six year old has been arrested (yes, that's happened).
i dont know where it stops but i do agree that it would be like germans having statues of hitler........

It's so easy for we middle aged white people to put our heads in the sand and say because WE haven't experienced it, it hasn't happened. I've absolutely been guilty of that. But it simply isn't so, and we should remind ourselves of that every day

Most were put up specifically during the Jim Crow era to intimidate Black voters...to keep them from rising up. To keep them from voting. They weren't put up immediately post war. It was way after, during the increase in influence of the KKK and other racist (if more privately racist) organisations.
hte statues are of the men who were the leaders not those whose lives were on the line. even the generals were in the rear not to front of battles.

This isn't about saying 'well, Robert E Lee was misguided, but basically had a good heart and was fighting for States' rights.' It's about 'let's scare black people and put them in their place and make sure they don't agitate or vote against us'
Well, I don't have my head in the sand because "I" haven't experienced those things. I don't think a lot of other white people do either. I see both black and white people at the recent protests.
I don't think there are many black people who are currently scared by statues.

There was a civil war hospital near my parents' house and in turn, a cemetery filled with confederate soldiers. there is a confederate flag flying in that cemetery. not sure how I feel about that. it's not there to intimidate, but just to mark that these real men and boys died in a war they may or may not have agreed with or even understood.

From what I have heard from my friends, they are much more interested in actual change than in statues being taken down or books being banned in schools.

Oh, Molly. I like you. I really do, but you know things are weird at best when someone says 'I have black friends'. All of us. ALL of US who are white have learned racism from an early age. We have to internally fight against it all the time. We have benefited from it every day. Every single day. Typically (myself included!) our Black friends are the most white acting blacks we can find - we go for Cosby (of the Cosby show, not the creepy actual guy) rather than Tupac. Of course we do - it's what we know. Actual change involves removing Confederate statues - it's a sign, a symbol, a real thing that helps to effect actual change.
Matty, I can tell you that my friends who are black would not be offended by my saying what I said in this discussion. They are well aware that they are black and they have said "I have white friends" in similar conversations.

I'm sure they wouldn't. I suspect they're middle (or upper middle class) Blacks who have played the game and believe it. They hope for the best for their children. But would you want your children to be treated as Black children are? You know what I want? He is. But what he's really depending on is casual racism - not the confederate flag flying, epithet shouting good old boys - he has those. It's the middle class white people who don't want their TJ Maxx damaged. Who say it's a shame that statues are being damaged. Who watch Fox News (or even 'normal' news) and see there are 'riots' in the streets (which most involve graffiti and fireworks - not all, but mostly - I have friends on the ground who are journalists). They don't want to risk their lawns being damaged or Target being shut.

J/S, yes, slavery became the issue for the north because they weren't making headway with keeping the taxation going, so let's just bring in social justice. Unfortunately, in the meantime, lobbyists have figured out more and more ways to add pork for their chosen gov't official so now we're not even getting straightforward laws on taxation, lol.
