yep
this time I spelled it right after it was called :-)
what are the odds we'd get ja 7 twice in one week
for all practical purposes, the odds are the same as getting massive wildfires in different continents in the same year as a global pandemic.
I don't think I'd ever typed that word before this week
Clues are up
thanks, lickety
anyone here from CA?
or anywhere on the west coast?
I'm in NV
have parts of CA lost power, rasta?
yes, PG&E is shutting down the power on purpose
OK -- was wondering why we haven't seen ru for a couple of days
I'm from CA, but not in the badly hit parts. There have been outages from fire itself and as rasta says to protect the grid (and, in theory, not start additional fires due to damage)
te 8 and 9
I can't imagine what it is like down there right now - at least on the western side of the mountains. We are getting a very acrid smoke (air quality 10) from the fires up here. One would think that after last year there wouldn't be anything left to burn

And thanks
there's still one J i can't find tho
and too many distracting star wars j words lol
I still need 4
There is a 7 we had recently
looked at Lickety for my last G word...GJ 7
a stone of green a cynic's sheen a babblet fair (a plural pair) talked and talking rocks for walking then the word which has been slurred
GJ7??? are you KIDDING me???
I’m sorry, you said GJ7? LOL
and no definition
hokie that poem is my clues for the 8 j words that i have
I’m going out on a limb to say that’s not an everyday word
LOL hokie...NO
NO compunction about using morewords for THAT one!
I searched morewords for it
it's the name of a norwegian cheese. like you can have brie, but not edam. go figure
a hard dark brown cheese usually made of goat's milk but sometimes made of a combination of cow's and goat's milk
Hurshy I don’t see the j7 we had recently in your poem
they're the rocks for walking
except they are a past tense instead of a plural so my poem is a LITTLE off in that respect
Oh
still, i thought it was a good effort
No, I think we are talking about different words
ok then there are two j7?!?! exciting
Unless I don’t know what rocks for walking means
Plus it is before the babblets
so yours is a ja
mine is a je
Yes
a je--- is a line of rocks that form a sort of pier that allows you to walk out into a bay/ocean
Hmm, I thought that was je5 ending in sometimes vowel
yes
and if you turn that into a past tense
Oh, got it
:D
Thx
i got yours too, thannks
J’s jettisoned!
that's the word i was going to use too!!! :D
and we ALMOST HAVE it in the GRID
Great minds something something
i need two more top G tho
and one S
I know, I double checked after I typed it, even though I know there were no more J
i will save E, D, T, W, H, and R for tomorrow, but it would be lovely to finish off the letters i have begun
Well, I have like 89 left and it’s after 2, so I’ll probably leave son
Soon
you don't happen to be done with G or S?
Nope
t
well we could compare the ones we have anyway to see if we're missing different ones
i have 2 ge, 3 gi, the gj (GJACK!) and 4 go
I have 5 go
thanks!
Np
I keep trying adware like that was a thing when enable was made
now for S i have 2 so, and 10 st
I still need 4, so probably can’t help
aha, there is one si6
i know, for i have found it
Got it, thx
do you spose before Zeus married Hera they went on a godda4?
Sounds right
Alright, I have tried each tile and reached halfway on all but some vowels. 73 left for tomorrow. good night!
well i have found 67/68 words attempted
i'll keep looking whilst i brosse mes dents
just in case it pops out
Just saw2 on the way out. Love it when that happens
AHA i found it JUST as i was about to shut the laptop
good morning. help with bottom i please

Tx!!

ty Molly, back from laundromat. resting a bit then some errands.
I am out of gin, tonic and limes!!
Peri is a busy bee today.
has ruru been here. or origami?
Well then, those are important errands. : D
indeed
That is almost an emergency!
LOL
Haven't seen Ru or Origami, why?
fires on west coast
fires on west coast
It is too early yet for ru.
ok
Was he on last night?
I don't know. I did not see him
Between the fires and the earthquakes, I don't know how anyone feels safe living in California.
It's not safe to live anywhere these days.
Ru has said that he has a plan and a safe place to go if the fires get too close.
Any bets on which will be the most requested word today? =)
Oh the gj word, hands down
=)
help with the te8/9 please
Ends with the amount of light from a bulb
ok lookng
ty got them
may have to take a nap later since I got up at 6 am to get to the laundromat when they opened at 7
I excel at napping :-)
I think the world would be a lot calmer of a place if everyone got an afternoon nap.
Got to get ready for a meeting...
Wear a shirt, Bea. : D
middle column i st4 pls?
in7/32 and in8/50
a smokey good morning everyone :)
hey nan
just read the chat -- according to freep, last night, the power has been cut in a lot of areas in CA
wow
my eyes weren't playing tricks on me -- there really is a gj? how many letters?
7
I forgot about that and was trying to figure out that bottom g. haha. I think you just have to look it up, which I am doing right now.
it's basically gj + vowel + a common babblet with your least favorite pt ending
gj or a cheese eat at Christmas on YuleKage! Wow I knew it immediately.
more yiddish I guess
LOL clg
No totally Scandinavian.
not at all familar with any Scandinavian food either
we can have scandinavian cheese, but no finan haddie
was pretty sure not yiddish since she mentioned Christmas. and I could see it being scandinavian, just with IKEA product names :D
I know - my grandmother used to make finan haddie. I was good.
it was a favourite of my granddad's so my grandmother used to make it as well
Ah, Norwegian goat cheese.
hey bea
Hello, Carla and all.
well, I am struggling to find any more words. 53 left
80 left and struggling
Paging Bea to the PB, Bea, please report to the PB.
LOL!
If you are going to go Norwegian for Christmas, I will take krumkakes over that gross sounding cheese any day.
I'll take both!
clue for go5,16 please
that's my missing g!
oh, it's like a style of dress I think
go5 - idol + part of French emall
small
I was like, what's french email? but I already had it so it didn't matter :D
"Waiting for Go5.16" with a different second vowel
could also say the alien that wanted to phone home
Got it thanks
these d's are difficult
Those are my last 6 words.
My friends and I are shopping for a small Himalayan Cedar in memory of a friends husband so the de6,24 came easy.
I have 5 de's that I can't find with the list
Do you have the de6 that is like anti perspirant
and a di8 that I know the first 5 letters and can't find.
it's a verb form of those five letters carla
PT of consumed
whew, thanks y'all
had tried everything but that
Wa6/33?
There is a de that takes out the H2O
ok, got that one
gj 7 please?
gj 7 is norwegian goat cheese.
Wa6/33 please?
I spelled it out earlier, did you miss it or not get it?
don't have yet, une, sorry
Ok tx
yes - I knew that bea - but the def doesn't help
and I was replying to nan about gj7
Wow, what are the odds that someone would be familiar with gj7 and de6?
You can google it.
I've actually seen that cheese at Whole Foods
But never bought it :-)
Oh the things I miss not shopping at Whole Paycheck
I looked it up and then I told you it's gj + a vowel + a babblet (looks kind of like bread you put in an appliance)
They're the only ones around here who deliver without waiting a week
wa6 - wa+ short hello + first number o**
ah, I never see that, thx, bea
I've never met a cheese I didn't like.
Not a fan of blue cheeses. Too intense.
I've got to get ready to meet Mr. Bea.
I don't like bleu cheese, but otherwise I'm pretty much the same, bea
Love all cheeses!
Wow, Limburger?
Tx Bea
Except limburger!
I love g4 cheese
Natasha, have you tried Instacart? I live in the same general area as you and I get same day delivery all the time.
I purchase a blue cheese from Oregon that was awarded best cheese in the world and the international cheese competition which I think is in Italy. Doubt if I will be able to find it this year.
finally saw the rodent one
Rodent cheese?
no, the de word
and that sounds awful, btw
and found the de6/8 combo. everyday words, just so twisty here

Monday greetings, Babblers.
hey judi
Alas, "Jedi" is not accepted. The force is not with us.
nope
with us the force is not
clue for te8 pls
don't have that yet, sorry
I'm too busy looking up R words right now. I have really looked up a lot of words today. I declare this grid is difficult.
te8 - a trillion light bulb values
te8 - think electricity - first bit sounds like earth, second relating to strength of power.
** blank stare **
LOL, same
Ah. Found it.
Delayed brain waves this a.m.
LIght bulb moment.
Indeed.
That blank stare was from too much light.
Got it. Thanks Sam.

same
ta's and ta's left, because I skipped them ;)
missing the te 7 and 6 that follows
morning all
hey moo, you're going to love the challenge today
hi mool
also, I posted this yesterday but I know you don't read the chat unless you're chatting - someone played datums in WWF. I thought the plural of datum was data?
Damnit, the word is there again..Please know it has no valid meaning apart from being a deeply an offensive slur, and we are not shylocks, slumlords, capitalists AND communists and bankers.Or people with big noses.
te7 is what you put on the tray for your afternoon cup of
te6 is a number plus three vowels
I usually get that and the 5. poor showing again today by me
teapot
nope - sorry
Like a set of dishes is dinner.....
have the te 6/18 -- looking for the te 6/24 and the te 7
Or a set of silver is silver....
found the 7 - ty molly
those are good clues, but I had to look it up
would have go6 it with the silver clue
I keep trying teddie, but no good
ah - found it
Well, you were close
2nd de 6/24 please?
well, now I understand the earlier comment about a himalayan cedar - that's de6, nan
antiperspirant + * you put under your arms to not smell. drop some letters
again, the def doesn't help
I know, that's why I added the clue
hello all. I am no longer ginless :-)
Check my profile for a little something to try when you finish Babble today.
whew, finally some good news ;)
well, I was able to figure out the last 2 without looking them up, but I am done.

need to go and plug the hepa filter in -- smoke is starting to come in through the woodwork I think. Hard to believe when the closest fire to us is at Omak - 125 miles to the south.
any more clues wanted?
hagd everyone and stay safe :)
peri, were you able to do it?
ty for teh re 7/8
Well, that Norwegian brown cheese was a new word for me. (gj/7.36)

ty for the hint
who would have thought?!
y/w
hi folks (if you, at one time, had a Norwegian father in law, you'd know all about that stuff *lol*)
hi walk
hi Welki!!
Hello - as I've not had a Norwegian fil I looked it up ;)
winge 'isnt found in the dictionary'?? What sort of dictionary is this??!!
put an h in it :D
i think i saw earlier that the 9 is in a te8 and 9? is that right?
Help with de 6/24, please.
Is there a d word missing from the list? Even if I got the de6 it seems I'm still needing another.
re 7/56 please
thanks for clue hurshy-got it. Yes the 8 and 9 are te's
rehinge
ooooohhhhhhhhhhh I did it again sorry
thats ok maybe you could put the re 7 56 in there too
If I had it I would!!
I got lots of words looking to help you but not that one. Sorry
my last re word but just cant find it
sounds like a type of bird for the re 7/56
more commonly a hockey team :)
thanks got it
well common in the US/Canada anyway
in Europe...go with the bird
ty mool, that is the hockey team i grew up with, cant believe i could not see it
hockeytown USA
RE7/56 color + what birds use to fly
now in florida and cheering the tampa bay lightning on. they are playing some awesome hockey right now
go bolts go
I may seen a couple of games in the arena there
and the old one in hockeytown too for that matter
glad to see a fellow hockey fan. none of my female friends care a lick about sports but i also like bassball, football. sports is now keeping me from going crazy in the covid world
I used to follow football, but now just on hockey in the US
i think the bolts goalie is the best ever. he has saved so many games and i am convinced he is an robot. go vassy
Tampa have been a pretty good team for a few years now, lot of former Rangers (team I follow) have gone on there too
hope they win it all.
Certainly would like them to beat the Isles :)
they are clearly the better team and i hope it happens tomorrow night, last chance for the Isles
looks like Dallas maybe for the final...that's a surprising entry in my mind, would think Tampa would have the edge there
my youngest son lives in Vegas and he told me to forget the bolts,, the Kings were going to win it all. After tonight he may have to change his theory.
Yeah, VGK have done remarkably well, but not the same team this year
before you get rid of the rodents, there's a de6. Help?
it's a tree from india gramma
was in the grid yesterday or the day before as well
Have a friend from Guyana with that last name, so it's stuck where others haven't
dracaena is the only tree I can find
okay, let me think if I can clue it differently
the end of the word kinda sounds like a word for a smell
maybe an illiterate who likes to remove smells ;)
Got it! ty for your clues and patience.
oh you're welcome...clueing is kind of like a puzzle in and of itself
I am still missing a D. I keep going over it again and again, I don't see where it's missing. Are they all in the list?
I have 3 left. One D and then the 2 long I words.
not sure, don't use lists
still have 4 d's left myself
do you have the one to make things dry?
oh how long is your missing word?
4 letters
father?
Got the I words now the missing d
or perhaps a french sounding pet
16 da words
oh, and which D?
11 de
8 di
9 do
2 dw
yeah, there's another word
not sure which one...but I have 1 off the right d remaining and 4 off the middle d remaining
another one of which d
This is missing from the middle d
okay
well, found 2 of the d's I was missing off the center
not that that helps you
oh, but it does
I have 3,919 points. How many should there be? Maybe that would help me to figure it out.
I have 16 da words
I mean 17 da words
it's either father or the singular of the five
has to be the single of the five
because the father comes off the other d
17 da?
da 4/6
yes
Oh for goodness sakes! It was da 4 I had the past tense and the er ending but not the 4. Finally I can rest my eyes.
oh, there you go
congrats :)
24 left here for me
81 left, trying to get to 50 before I list, may not make it
yeah, bit of a slog today peri
Hi folks

ah...ty...
finally found the 8/9...
65 bbl
great...
16 to go
ah that seven from the other day...
yes....funny how rare words here sometimes turn up more than once in a few days....
yeah, there's at least two sevens today that were unusual in recent boards
yes...
and one 7 that i hope we never see again...
oh yeah, that one I admit I looked up
I think that might be a first...I never look words up
12 left....three 4s, five 5s, two 6s and two 7s
i have never seen it before....
yeah, not a word I've seen before...would be fun to play that one in scrabble
yes, though you won't find it in a scrabble dictionary... ;o)
says it's legit in TWL...and the plural too, so you could bingo :)
less surprisingly, also legit in SOWPODS
TWL??
well it would be SOWPODS because it's in TWL
What is TWL?
TWL = The Word List - the official US Scrabble word list for competitive play
Ah ...
i didn't think that foreign words were accepted....
It includes the undesirable/curse words
lot of English is foreign words
from Bureau to Avacao
Avacado
nouns particularly
Kiwi, Sirroco
Has the obligatory discussion regarding the "J" word taken place yet today?
yes, but this one is a bit out there.....
Didgeridoo
Kauri is acceptable and Tuatara
and then there's all those trees and currencies
from Zlotys to Ohia
TWL was basically 5 US collegiate dictionaries combined (with some errors)
The Enable dictionary used here was based off the 1998 version of TWL, with some corrections
lots of words, i am sure...
Enable seems even older...
Enable became popular because it's free to word game developers, and it's mostly consistent with scrabble
I've always wondered why scrabble doesn't just use the OED minus thee proper nouns.
*the proper nouns
up until the mid-2000s, they didn't update TWL very regularly
Well, it's because it was American to begin with, but more importantly the rights to the game were split
So there became a UK-centric rights holder, and a US-centric rights holder
Interesting
the UK dictionary was known as the OSW - Official Scrabble Words, much more expansive
the US one was OSPD or Official Scrabble Players Dictionary
in the 90s there was a movement to purge OSPD of racially motivated and offensive words, so it spit into TWL (which has no definitions) used for competitive play, and the family friendly one
I have the latest edition of that one
The guy who championed ENABLE actually went through the dictionaries and OSPD and sent in lists of missing/incorrect words
The official one that is
then started his own dictionary with the help of others
Babble is built on one of the first versions of TWL which came out around the end of the 1990s
It's been updated since, but the game hasn't added those newer versions
So words like internet aren't in this one
yet the internet was around then....
Words don't tend to get retired out of the dictionary either...so we end up just getting more words
yes, but generally speaking the word takes a while to go from colloguial or proper-noun use into the general lexicon
So it'd first need to get added to one of those five dictionaries, then it would ultimately end up in Scrabble...
Hi origami, Peri was asking about you this morning due to the fires. And yes, The Discussion has taken place yet again.
So when you look at the 1998 edition, it's probably more like 1992-4 in terms of dating
Hi Molly.
Well, mool, I now know who to ask about any dictionary questions I may have :D
Well I think they're all legitimate questions
trying to figure out why one word is in there and another is not takes is generally not very clear
did you see the movie "The Professor and the Madman"?....it's about the development of the OED....
Fireworks for me. Happy babbling everyone!
congrats, zooz....
I saw that movie, pen. It was interesting.
yes, i thought it was....and well acted...
Mool, I just meant that you are obviously very knowledgeable about dictionaries.
I saw it too - I love words and etymology :)
i am done....
yes, i like words, too@
congrats, pen and zooz!

10 here but I'm not finding it easy
getting cooler here, going to be inthe 50s tonight. may need another blanket
it is a tough one Liz
Opposite parts of the world - we've just got rid of our extra blanket
The heat is on in my apartment building tonight.
when the heat is on here it is very drying and my skin and hair are already dry
radiator heat which I do not like
radiator heat which I do not like
Yes, it gets dry here too.
Funny thing climate. Winter is our dry season here.
I'm always amused by the "it's getting cooler" conversations here. These are the nights when I sleep with the bedroom windows open. Best sleep ever.
My bedroom window is still open.
I tend to agree. I sleep better in the winter than in the hot, humid summer nights.
Thanks for your much earlier clues Molly. Really helpful.
Glad they helped, Liz.
in 7 pls?
I love to have the windows open but my allergies act up when they are open :(
in + mark up text + vowel
Duh! I tried that with a different vowel after your in 8 clue! Thanks.
Then past tense for the 8
Yeah - I got that when you clued it before - tried just to leave off the last letter and didn't try an alternative vowel.
These weird words are so hard to comprehend.
As for the Norwegian cheese - have to admit I went straight to morewords for that one!
6 t word left
Fireworks - last word to7 - fried tortilla.
Have a good day all - off to the local annual outdoor sculpture exhibition and maybe to spot a few whales in distance.
fw here too, byee
the gj seems to be a proper noun like Edam and Meunster
trying to get half way. ugh. any clues for the 9 or any 8s? ty. also have no sevens. ugh.
the re prefix will get you lots of long words
well a few.
ty harry. specifics work too. is the 9 an re? and the 8s?
there's an re7/8 and an re6/8
the 8/9 is a te, meaning a trillion energy units
ty
yipes. dont know trillion energy units but ty.
something christopher lloyd might say in back to the future
nothing came up in google.
got the re 7 and 8. ty.
there's a prefix meaning a trillion, and the root word which is an energy rating for an appliance
still need the 9 but have to go do an errand. darn.
i see that you have left mkg. but will leave a clue for the te9 which is the plural of te8. te + **y of sunshine + James **** invented the steam engine. you may have to google the part about the steam engine.
i am just back now to get the clue.
google says thomas someone invented the ssteam engine
Forget the steam engine part. Think light bulb ratings.
(james **** developed an early steam engine but was not the primary inventor)
light bulbs have ratings?
i got it! got the 8 and 9! ty. great clues. ty so much.
woo hoo!
i am finishing a great salad:
celery, lettuce, cucumbers, pieces of salami, pieces of chicken, lots of dill, onion powder and garlic powder, and mayo. yummmmm

well, time for bed. I started too late to finish this one.
my goal is half way each day, with NBT, NBS and that is enough. try it. makes it easier.
