I hate to be the naysayer, but Eddie Van Halen doesn't cut it in my book. Lots of acrobatics, lots of distortion and wailing, but no soul. And imo, not that much talent. But I always liked Valerie Bertinelli.

You have the right to your opinon Harry. But a lot of people disagree. Eddie crops up on any top guitar players of all time list.

I consider EVH one of the best.
I wasn't that fond of the band, but I recognized his talent.
There are a lot of guitar players (Slash for instance) whose music and style I don't particularly like. But I do recognize the talent.

EVH was one of the greatest technical guitarists. If there was a lot of acrobatics, it was bc he was in an acrobatic band. One of his influences was Eric Clapton, who was very soulful. He always seemed to have fun while he was playing.

I think these lists of top 100 this and that are pretty much universally garbage. When EVH is higher up than somebody like Carlos Santana? Gotta be kidding me.
Anyway, may he rest in peace. I harbor no ill will, and he was certainly a gifted entertainer. Though I always did hate David Lee Roth.
There are many more talented than EVH. Nancy Wilson from Heart, for instance.

that's really tough.. likely Clapton.. possibly Prince, Phil Manzanera,
it's all a matter of taste. I don't have any problem putting Carlos at the top if that is what you like. Makes total sense to me
technically Prince was the most gifted guitarist we've ever seen.. Clapton is about as great as it gets too

I do really love Clapton and Santana but, as you say, everybody has their own favourites. I know was exceptionally gifted, just never liked his music.

clapton is by far my favorite guitarist
Prince and Clapton were/are both awesome. But I would have to go with Santana, Hendrix, Page and Allen Collins as technically best. Just my humble opinion.
And let us not forget David Gilmour.
