in other news - i gave students two weeks to write an essay. It was due Thursday at 8pm. Yesterday a student sent me a ONE LINE response- "I am not doing this, sorry." I was LIVID. I sent an email to the parents, and they wrote back saying the school was not doing enough to support their son, they both had to work, he wasn't to blame, etc. I am disgusted! Can you imagine EVER being that cheeky with a teacher when you were in 8th grade?

anyway, he gets a zero and has to deal with it, right?

nope. The parents called the school, made a stink, had to meet with the principal, and then the principal had to meet with the parents. I was accused of being incompetent.
keep a copy of the email and note the time and day of your call with the parents. Call me paranoid, but that info will be good to have to hand around the end of the marking period.
the kid wrote one page (the minimum was three) and I have to grade that.
