Happy Bloomsday all!
For those who don't know, Bloomsday is a celebration of James Joyce. It is celebrated on June 16th because that is the day featured in Joyce's novel "Ulysses"
And in honor of Bloomsday, ‘intellectuals’ who claim to have read Ulysses, dress up in the fashion of 1904 - (straw boater hats are essential for the gentlemen), and visit the various sites around Dublin which featured in the novel, doing readings & re-enactments. It’s quite a fun day, or it would have been, had festivities not been dampened by covid restrictions.
I never read many of the "Classics" way too heavy reading for me
There are classics, and then there’s Ulysses! It goes waaaay over my head.
Yeah, but you have got to love a line like this: “The sea, the snotgreen sea, the scrotumtightening sea.â€
yeah, Ulysses is in an experimental category all by itself, honestly
and I say this as an English major
it takes a lot of balls to write scrotum tightening
Just like Shakespeare, Joyce's writing was of the period in which he lived. Not many of us can hang with 1920 speak. And he was writing about 1904 so that colors how it was written as well.
