I would cite poverty and ignorance to be the prime contributors to over population. People in poor countries with no access to birth control and the significant amount of people in the US who have kids on purpose to stay on social assistance.

gifted 5th grade student: You know, statisticians say the world population will probably level off at somewhere between 11-13 billion. why is that? me: well, because they have seen that groups of people who have access to birth control are choosing to have smaller families, and so they figure that when other people get that access, they will choose to have smaller families too. g.s.: why don't they have access? me: because they are poor, and it's a medical thing that they aren't being given. g.s.: what IS birth control? me: it is a way to prevent yourself from having babies. g.s.: wouldn't that just be 'not having sex'? me (internal): clearly you haven't hit puberty yet me: well, that's really hard, to get people to not have sex. so birth control is ways of having the sex but NOT having the babies.
I'll join you on the soapbox ru. I don't think having kids because "it's expected" or because of family pressure is a reason either. How many fathers (and mothers) would not be parents if they made the decision solely for themself? Then there's the ones who have a baby because "I want someone who will always love me" -- okay, someone else's turn on the soapbox :)

the tuesday crew ran a free for all. then complained they had the heaviest workload.
we had the cat lady who asked for chicken and tuna to feed her cats. there was the client who waited till we were getting her someone special and cleaned out what was set out as ones and twos to be unshelved.
