Disagree. If a person speaks out against Putin, they disappear. What pen says is right, the people there have many other outlets where to get their news. Although one can only discuss these thing with those who they know intimately.

my roommate freshman year took russian and dropped it after the first assignment - writing the alphabet
It's not as overwhelming as it appears. I taught myself the alphabet, so that when I went there, I could at least sound things out.

LOL - I bought one of those "Teach Yourself" things, with cassette tapes & a workbook. Tapes were super helpful.
I've done that like 3x with spanish, plus I took 3 years in high school, and while I can get the general idea reading it, I'm hopeless.
sadly, my dad was a spanish teacher and I never took the opportunity to try conversational spanish with him. I did have a mom from my kid's soccer team offer but the first time I tried I just completely froze up.
spanish is a fairly easy language to learn like French
