Oh look, Pen has jumped on the HOET bandwagon. Before you know it she will be saying "jelly" and "adorbs"
pen's been HOETing forever now
I want "werk" to be a word...Hamilton fans will know what I mean
I did try werk and twerk, even though I know twerk is too new for enable
finally found a K
missing one K here...
I found kr5, what do you have?
kr 5...
darn
mine is kr 5/18....
surprised the kr 5/20 was there
ah...the missing K....

I'm thinking about making a ham and cheese omelet

Wow, MIckey is the only Monkee still alive.
back from the bagel shop....
And what is the haul?
just wanted sesame and poppy seed bagels....they only had two sesame left....also got some chive cream cheese...
i did get four poppy seed bagels....
No drug tests for you this week
drug tests?...
Poppy seeds can contain trace opiates and lead to a false positive on a drug screening
ah...ok....
ask her how she knows...=)
heh heh....hi bea....
Good morning all.
I thought that was common knowledge. So many companies do drug screening now. Also, I have been hanging out with musicians most of my life. Enough said.
does the employer ask pen if she'd recently been schmeared?
trying to schmear my reputation, ru?....
I don't think employers are allowed to ask questions about your sex life

Or someone who doesn't like poutine? (gag me)
Hi all.
morning mkg
i don't care for poutine but i do like french canadian cheese curds...haven't had those in a long time....
hi mkg...
Any clues for 7s or 8s welcome.
Also stats.
Ty
part of Manhattan....mi 7/25....
Prew
Ooops.
What are French Canadian cheese curls?
Sorry, curds
we used to buy them in a plastic bag....we called them crottes (turds)...
All this talk of breakfast made me hungry. Was excited to remember we had leftover pizza from last night.
When I look it up, all I get are poutine results
oh ugh
yea, bea....i have some in the fridge, too...
Oh Bea, now you're going to gross Ru out
I bet Ru never has breakfast for dinnber either
*Dinner (sorry, typing with an injured finger)
no problem, molly...sorry about your finger...
what did you do to your finger?
Missing i words. Darn. Any clues for the i’s in 3rd and 4th columns? Ty. Stats too is fine. Ty
Something clutzy. Dropped something heavy on it.
Breakfast for dinner or lunch is always great.
mkg....did you see my clue for mi 7?...
ouch molly
Yeah, as if my life wasn't fun enough already 😊
I do stuff like that too. drop a can on my foot weeks ago and it is still black and blue.
Bea, I dropped a really heavy log on my big toe once, lost the toenail eventually
molly was a lumberjack in another life... ;o)
How did you know?
it's one of the most dangerous jobs!
i perceive things...trained in psychology... ;oP
at first I thought you got your finger stuck in a dike molly "D
LOL!
No Ru, I haven't switched teams
I meant like the little danish girl molly
protecting the town from the dam breaking?
Well if you had said dyke then I would have caught your drift 😊
oh.. i get that mixed up sometimes
Google says they are interchangeable, my mistake
was the story about denmark or finland or the netherlands? I can't remember.. it's a childhood thing
pretty sure netherlands
I think it was a little Danish boy
i think it was a girl
at least in school that's the way it was presented to me
Nope Dutch boy. Probably wearing wooden shoes
i think it was a dutch boy...
Hence, the Dutch Boy Paints
oh it was a dutch boy.
here a boy, there a boy, everywhere a dutch boy...
he saved holland
here in SF he'd have a broken finger
Old Van Dijk had a dyke, eieio
anyone have either of the Ks? my monkeys are having no luck so far
i have them both
both KR 5s....
stats?
kr5 18 and 20
one is offensive
tyvm
Nnot offensive if you like cabbage
back from a walk - 68F outside! but 86% humidity, so still sweaty
but it isn't really used in that short form to refer to the actual cabbage, but as an insult for a german person
but isn't the insult capitalized?
idk...
and I thought it was for Nazis, not all Germans
Hot dog vendors use kr5 for the cabbage product all the time
speaking of nazi, somehow that is on enable even though it should be a proper noun
i don't think it's nazis bc i think it was used in the first war also
And the cabbage reference is part of the definition here
the cabbage product though, is definitely the most disgusting thing i have ever tasted. it's not the cabbage, it's what they DO to it
if you click on the def, the dog condiment is #1, and the slang is #2, plus it says it's capitalized
*Guesses Hurshy is no fan of kimchi either
in general I don't like cabbage, though I've been getting those chopped salad bags that have cabbage in them.
yeah i haven't tasted kimchi, the smell was enough to warn me off. i only ate the kr5 because i was trying to be polite as a guest at someone's home. but i couldn't stomach more than a couple of bites.
we have had a lot of those this summer, carla.
I love the avocado ranch one
I used to have Korean neighbors that fermented kimchi on their patio.
I like kimchi if it is too spicy.
I don't use the dressings they add. I make my own.
hmm, did bea leave out a not or she only likes really spicy kimchee
not
still 50 left, getting to work. TTFN
well it doesn't seem like tu4/9 ought to count either, while we're talking about potentially proper nouns
agreed
but it is allowed in scrabble
r
The horse definition of tu4 is probably why it's allowed
oh there's a horse? mk
how about 8s? i have found neither
li 8...
ahh thanks
to8 is the other
that will require more thought
Oh, like li8 is a normal word
is the to 8 a compound word?
it's normal enough
not compound
ty...
Apparently, like beauty, normal is in the eye of the beholder
k
naturally
naturally
i hate when that happens
The to8 is even weirder than the li8
i am beginning to think that... :o|
ends with facial twitch
any other clues for the to8? my monkeys don't grok
Starts with ripped
got it....ty....never seen that one before....
Could you spell it please Bea? 😊
No one wants grokking monkeys
iktr
Hmm, Bea has been hanging around Carla too long
taking a break....bbl to finish...bye all....
Tx Bea
morning all
hi moo
this is a slow moving chat
matches my word finding
slower than molasses
Any clues for the those 8s welcome. To and li.
TO is the to4 above it, plus a vowel plus a nervous eye movement
Got it. Ty sophie. Any clues for the li?
no, sorry, starting at the bottom of the alphabet today
slow going
LI 8 is li 5 just above it with ending means a highly intelligent groups of people (ie BABBLERS) :)
Um, make that SOME Babble players. We are not all the mensa geniuses that some of you are.
not me, I just put an S on groups should have been singular
Ty for the 8s. Now need any 7s out there. Ty
Any clues for the i words third and 4th columns? Ty
Stats and clues welcome
oopsw just got the 4th column word
So now any clues for the i in 3rd column?
Earoil is not a word. There is no oil in our ears.
Too bad. Missing those E words too.
Any one here with a clue for the E words? Ty. Or the i word for third column i? Ty

the last syllable that is
or rather homophone
got the io6.
how about opposite of dark
nice
thank u
if it begins with ne, It can't possibly end with one
oh, we've been cluing the i
the ne7/60 I don't have
oh, no Nan, I was on the io6 with the beer
oh - that makes sense then -- thought you were clueing the ne 7/60
ne has a robotic ending
found the 7/36, ty mool
there's another one nancy
i see that now
yw nan, thanks for mentioning it so I could look for it :)
It helps the chat be less confusing if you start your post with what you are cluing. As in "ne7...has the robot ending"
Especially when many different people are jumping in creating a clue frenzy.
found the ne7/60
I don't have that one mool
refers to a series of TV stations, among other things
common word
oh heavens - how did we miss that?! ty mool
TY MOOL
I just keep looking for anything weird these days
yeah, I was getting really exotic, then had to relook at it
sheesh ty mool
is the li8 a compound? is the to8 a compound?
No on the LI8
No on the TO 8
thanks not seeing either of them
tx for the stats
20 to go
the LI8 is the LI 5 just above it plus a 3 letter ending....means a group of highly intelligent people
a lot of new words today - at least to me
TO 8 is the TO4 above it plus a vowel plus a 3 letter word meaning an eye twitch
18 to go, and 6 of them are p's
tx soph
down to 10
Sophie is all over that li8 today
to 6/33 please?
direction or movement nearer something
32
8

taking a break, maybe will be back later
missing all the easy ones today
ty mool
Nan, don't feel bad......you wouldn't believe the one I just struggled over!
wow -- there is a wo 6/48

got the li8 ty
not sure I have the right to4 to find the to8. not using the list yet
found the to8 ty
hi all. Clue for the AN7?
nm
spent twenty minutes looking for the last v and it was super easy uggh
I hate that
hello again
hey carla wassup?
just getting ready to move tomorrow.
really? please tell all
for some reason we are doing it ourselves again, even though we said last fall we wouldn't
Makes me glad I don't live close enough to be asked to help!
good point
we have the youngest helping us this time. we moved a bunch of stuff in May with the oldest, but he is out of town right now.
ha! found a word.
why are you moving?
sold our monster house last fall and have been in a temp house while we looked for a new one.
downsizing in the same city?
downsizing to another state, but just 2 hours from here and 2 hours from my mom and extended family. not a retirement neighborhood, but we are bringing the avg age way down.
I thought twerk was a new word.
it is new, but too new for enable. are you saying it took for you?
I hope you like your new house. I send you a virtual housewarming present: 💡 (Sorry, not a lot of selection at the emoji store.)
gotta go get out of my pajamas...have a work mtg in a few...bbl
aww, that's sweet, thank you. we do like it a lot. we repainted the whole inside and have done some other things.
I would love to downsize possessions but my husband is a junk freak- meaning stuff follows him home. Our household has changed as we have a family of Afghan refugees in our third floor apartment. They have a seven year old and a brand new week old baby. Certainly changes the tenor of life. Many cups of tea. In addition to my own grandchild who lives out of state, I am "grandmother" to two Afghan children, and mother figure to their mother. A lot of community support--it takes a village. I prefer it to a retirement community.
wow. I have definitely downsized possessions but still have a LOT of stuff for my sewing hobby. this house is the perfect size for us but it does need more storage space. if only there was a basement.
We have a very active boy from Afghanistan who will be bored to tears for 2 weeks till his English immersion school begins. Not bored, but definitely interested in hanging out in our house. We have a neighborhood that is full of resources. The baby is American born! She will never have to wear a burka!
This is all a big change in our lives.
maybe he'll be enthralled with the baby
Oh he is. And with the Spiderman mask and gloves I got him. The neighbors love him.
how is their english? you all communicate okay?
I went in one year from being a grandmother of none, then my daughter had a daughter, and the Afghans came to us for refuge. Next door we have an Australian Ph.D. in arts education, across the street is a bilingual educator, along with our longtime neighbors. We also have a family that lives in Kenya but own a house here that he bought decades ago.
that's the way it is in NY, a melting pot. at least that's what tv and movies tells me.
The dad is functional in English. The mom who is much younger comes from the provinces and was illiterate in her own language. Now is being tutored. The boy is communicating with a combination of English and skilled pantomime. He will be speaking soon. We volunteered for this, and am glad we did it, but it is definitely a change having children around the house again. My youngest is a freelance writer and lives in LA, except she is in Italy now, and who knows what's next. Our oldest is working mostly from home. The granddaughter knows us on FaceTime, and we are spending a few days in the Berkshires with them in August. And Rosh Hashanah.
My city was never really a melting pot- it started mostly Irish and Italian working class in triple deckers, but when the subways extended, more people moved in. Now we have yuppies, Haitians, Asians, Brazilians- the gamut.
There were always some jewish community for over a 120 years, but a minority.
my job out of college was at a company that had moved from NYC the year or two before. my dept. was a super melting pot.
I grew up in Flushing Queens. It was rather redlined, as Trump Sr. and another guy were responsible for all the postwar development. By postwar, I of course refer only to WWII. But Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn of course are home to many ethnicities. But there are separate neighborhoods. You can go two blocks in any direction and be in a totally different world.
yeah, I think people who grew up somewhere in NYC don't get how foreign the boroughs and the neighborhoods are to the rest of us.
Upper Bronx and Lower Bronx. Lower East Side. Latinx now, a century ago, immigrants from Europe. Hipsters now, poverty then. Everything changes constantly. As Nora Ephron said, once you leave New York it doesn't let you back in easily. Your favorite dry cleaners is now a restaurant, and so on. Staten Island is still a thing unto itself.
I was working in a bridal shop in Flushing Queens, when my boyfriend kicked me out in one of those crushing scenes. What was I to do, where was I to go, I was out on my fanny...
are you writing a nora ephron movie right now? 🤣
Then over the bridge from Flushing to the Sheffield's door. I was there to sell makeup but the father saw more. I had style, I had flair , that's how I became
THE NANNY.
Now who would have guessed that the girl we described would be exactly what the doctor prescribed?
Ah yes, except you missed the wonderful line of, "I had flair, I was there!, that's how...." It was so tongue in cheek.
Now the father finds her beguiling (watch out CC) and the kids are actually smiling (such joie de vie)
never really watched that
Oh yeah.
I was the lady in red while everybody else was wearing tan. The flashy girl from Flushing- the Nanny named Fran.
good memory!
I am watching it repetitively. My daughter has been working a bit with Fran's stylist who is a piece of work in herself.
I couldn't stand her accent and her laugh 🤣
No really, I know the whole series by heart.
That's the whole point. I know those people.
Not liking her laugh is like saying soap operas are stupid. Everyone knows it. Fran Drescher is a gifted physical comedian who grew up watching I Love Lucy, my other favorite show. I love Netta.
yes, I know it was faked/exaggerated by her
The thing is, in the 90s Flushing was already Chinatown, and that whole Sylvia culture was gone. To LA or Boca.
"Ms Taylor, meeting you is an experience that is unparalleled in my universe."- Sylvia to Liz.
If you'd ever been to a Bar Mitzvah in Queens in the 60s though, I'm sure there were zaftig ladies putting rolls into their purses.
well I still have 36 words left. this grid is the worst.
And I meant to say "meeting you is an Honor bestowed on me that is unparalleled in my universe" with a curtsy and Taylor looking at her like WTF?
I have 75 left. I have to work at 6 then call it a day.
oh. 72. Slow.
yeah, 35. slow.
"Your mother's couch is covered in plastic." "That's to preserve it for the afterlife."
rehi
rehi joy
Huh?
huh who?
refi joy?
In school in Canada, I was taught that the U.S. is a melting pot, and Canada is a mosaic. It sounds like New York is a bit of a mosaic.
whazzat?
I still have 8 4's that I'm actually looking for and can't find.
Hey! Kaplan! I grew up in Flusing, Queens too! It's been a VERY long time since I lived there, though.
Yeah, we were taught the melting pot narrative in grade school back in olden times, but I think mosaic is more accurate. Please go back and tell the rest of the Canadians.
parts of the US are, but parts are not. like my hometown is like 99% white and mostly scots-irish.
Flushing was mostly Jewish when I was a kid but I had a few Asian-American friends. Now it's almost all Asian-American and the restaurants are MUCH better.
People seem to choose to live where people are like themselves, and then get on Diversity and inclusion task forces.
My block was Jewish and Italian. There was one Protestant. I did not know what that was. You were Jewish or Catholic.
Now I can't read the signs there. It's kind of cool.
REAL Chinese food, not American Chinese glop.
LOL. I only knew Protestants. I met Catholics and Jewish people at college.
I have to go. My group was expecting 8 people but it's down to two or three. Augst sucks for therapists.
bye, have a nice day
I was like "TYH is a LUTHERAN?"
Bye
Have you noticed that the people on these games are I think mostly white? As far as I can tell.
Now I DO have to go--to ZOOM.
FW for me! See ya later
probably should say I knew baptists and methodists and some holy roller types. don't think we had lutherans or episcopalians (no idea how to spell that.)
help with any pr6 or pr7 please
looks like they are all related to something from the food pyramid found in meat for one thing
ty carla
back to finish....*waving to the lurkers*....
