I would take an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen too
ice it with a bag of frozen peas
oh yes i have taken some of those
on a regular schedule
why peas? can't i just use ice packs?
i don't LIKE peas
ice packs will burn your skin if you leave them on too long unless you wrap them in a hand towel.
so i haven't GOT peas
by the time the peas start to thaw out your session is over
... of course you can ... but the thing with the peas is the package will be shaped more easily by your back

oh well of course i would just put it outside my shirt or in a towel
the ice packs i have are the soft gel kind so they shape too

lower back issues are likely an irritated disc so the nerves around there are active..
even if the pain is on the side, not the middle?
if you have a stiff neck heat works better
