FWs...last word to 6, the fruit
is that TO a fruit or a veggie?
Technically a fruit. But you probably wouldn't put it in a fruit salad.
I cannot see any of the 7s, not the eight
Sigh
Ho5.....ho7 is "one who"
One who treats with deference and respect
Aaah - I miss American spellings sometimes!
Thank you
You're welcome!
phantom: emanate
I still don't know why I lived most of my life thinking a to6 was a vegetable. I feel deceived. 😊
that whole thing is... really quite a mess tho
what's considered a "vegetable" depends on whether you are talking about like classifications from biology or cookery or something else
Nix v. Hedden, 149 U.S. 304 (1893), was a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States that, under U.S. customs regulations, the tomato should be classified as a vegetable rather than a fruit.[1] The Court's unanimous opinion held that the Tariff Act of 1883 used the ordinary meaning of the words "fruit" and "vegetable," instead of the technical botanical meaning.
I consider it a fruit though :)
ah Jeff, what a fount of information you are
I think a tomato is really a fruit, but classified as a vegetable
i consider it a vegetable since I put it on sandwiches with meat :)
can't get my head around this puzzle today, 71 left

hmm...terran is a perfectly fine word :)

Hey MKG, How are you? I guess you don't make it to Israel anymore.
I'm making no progress. 16 for later. going for a haircut - first day of school tomorrow!
Hi player girl. Please remind me who you are. Thanks. Havent been to israel since 2016. But have 3 granddaughters there.
Michelle???????
Wonder why their first day is tomorrow and not today
they're all over the place. Our first day was last wednesday, a half day, then thursday, friday off, monday off, back today. Why they don't just start after labor day is beyond me
that's a northern thing
No, it is actually northern to start the day after labor day. That is the way it was for years.
When I was a kid we started the day after Labor Day and were done by the first of june. Now it seems the school year is at least 4 weeks longer. So many "in service" days and half days.
yeah, that's what I was referring to
Yep, Origami. Summer was a full three months long.
we get a half day every wednesday district wide and it's bananas
how are parent supposed to deal with that is anyone's guess
Half day once a week is very difficult for parents who work.
truly
Although, since COVID a lot of households have gone back to one parent staying at home.
not in my experience, lots of households have just had to scramble with one parent working at home some of the time
We have had a lot of daycare centers close due to lack of enrollment.
up here they've closed due to lack of staffing
the waitlists for daycares are years long at this point
I would think working from home makes dealing with the school schedule easier
most parents scramble and use nannies, grandparents, or work with the kids in the house if they can
I went my whole life without a nannie
and pretty much parents too
I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who can afford nannies.
it does, when there's school. the problem is you still have to work even if the kids are home, including those half days and the random "professional development days" and all the mondays we get off of school because it's a holidya but not a bank holiday
I was a latch-key kid by the time I was 7.
i beat you to that ori
Wow Origami, that is awfully young.
5 here
I went to school early so i was on the cusp
Me too. Fall birthdays.
My older sister was theoretically home, but she was a teenager and was often out.
they call the cops on you now if you leave kids in a (cool) car in the grocery store parking lot
They should call the cops. Young children do not belong unsupervised in a car.
toddlers don't
an 8 year old? of course they can hang out in a car
my mom went back to work when I started kindergarten but I have 2 older bros so I don't remember exactly when I was alone.
In our state, 8 is the cut off age. You can't leave a child younger than 8 in a car or home alone.
I was unsupervised all day in the summer from age 6 onwards, we just all played together. We'd call our parents at lunch and dinner to make sure we had someplace to be (usually a friend's house) but there was... very little parental involvement. We used to go to the grocery store by ourselves by then, never mind hang out in a car with an ipad for 15 minutes
my parents would leave us on a Friday to go gambling in Reno and come back on Mondays
Me too. I was out the door in the morning and seldom came home before it was dark. Bikes are wonderful things.
i was 5 and my Brother 9
they'd be arrested nowadays
absolutely
mr. homie is 5th of 11 kids. his oldest sister says their parents used to go on trips when she was in 5th grade and leave her in charge. there were like 2 kids in diapers for her to take care of.
and kids have lost something important
The should have been arrested then, Ru
the ability to grow without constant involvement by adults
how to be independent, agree
That's were millennials came to be :D
Agreed, mael. Helicopter parents are now the norm.
where
and trust me, i've got a 6 year old and an 8 year old. Some things are different. I wouldn't be able to let them roam our neighborhood because it's not a safe street for bikes
I tried to not do that. made them start doing laundry at like 8th grade, made them go to the dr by themselves in high school, etc.
but the fact that I can't even leave them in a car to pop in to the hardware store? that's RIDICULOUS
i get it.. but it can be dangerous in many areas
of course, but we can't generalize
i agree
you need a couple nannies mael :D
hah
it's not that I can't take them in with me, it's just that they need to learn independence
my kids aren't even allowed to walk off the bus onto our driveway and the house without an adult present
Why not leave them home then?
because if anything were to happen, even smallest of incidents, I could have my kids taken away by CPS. That's the reality these days.
All kids learn independence eventually. It is debatable how young that learning needs to happen.
we've created a system that keeps children "safe" at the expense of their development. And of course no one wants 7 year old routinely left alone, but there is a progression that they're not allowed to undertake. Walking to the store alone? Getting themselves off the bus? That's how you slowly push their boundaries. If you can't do that at all then you can't prepare your kids for when they will be able to do so
all kids is what's debatable. There are plenty of kids in college who are functionally still children at this point
Sadly, the rules are in place because kids have been abducted walking home from school and getting off the bus. Sometimes, by a non-custodial parent.
abductions are not less frequent now than they were in the 80s
yeah.. but you don't want your kid to be one of them
sure
it's so much different now than the way I grew up
I believe that the laws that are in place are there for the safety of the kids.
I don't believe that it is much different, is the thing
mael, I agree. What's disheartening is statistically, there is simply no substantial evidence of children being harmed by strangers while they are out and about. The chances are so tiny as to be insignificant. Yet between the media and the narrative that we live in a terrible country of violence, parents have bought into it. Facts are, violence has been steadily decreasing in the past 50 years. It was far more dangerous for a kid to be out on their own in the 70's than today. But you know ... facts are such an inconvenience!
kidnappers existed in the 80s, so did pedophiles and murderers, as well as non-custodial parents with a grudge. They were rare, just as they are rare now
yeah...but nowadays some of those pedophiles make it to congress
and we should deal with them in congress, by tossing their asses in jail where they belong
You guys should do a little research on the number of abducted kids in the 80's vs today.
I am with you 100% mael
in jail and not having a slot speaking at MAGA Rallies
a lot of what was reported as kidnappings in the 80s were actually custodial disputes
by the way
kidnapped by janitors?
:D
If a non-custodial parent takes a child, that IS kidnapping.
of course it is
but it's got ZERO to do with laws about leaving your kid in the car of the parking lot
most kids are abducted during visitation
All I can tell you is that I got left in a car when I was six and managed to get the car into neutral and if not for a very nice man passing by, I would have rolled out into traffic. There are reasons for the laws.
and I'm sorry that happened to you
It's a miracle I made it to adulthood. I was such a wild child, I was always in peril.
I fell off multiple trees, I'm lucky my head's pretty sturdy
had a couple bike accidents
oh is that ever true ori
Again, the statistical probability is wildly overblown by media and parents. 73 million kids in the U.S., and 400,000 "abducted" last year, the vast majority by parents and friends. That's a 0.0054 chance your kiddo will be abducted. On the other hand, there's a 100% change your kiddo will be exposed to extreme images of violence, pornography, etc. with unsupervised access to a computer, smart phone, or tv.
100% CHANCE, not change -- lol!
there's a joke there somewhere about Molly and the stick shift.. but I'll let it go
there are absolutely real dangers that we are better at addressing now, like safety in a moving vehicle. Car seats save lives. Fencing pools saves lives.
but statistically, not letting your kid walk home from school is not preventing much of anything besides learning how to live in this world responsibly
I had horses and would go off riding in the hills alone when I was 12 or so. One of them threw me off once about 5 miles from home.
I tried to ensure my kids were never in situations where they could be in danger of abduction. Kids can be and are taken from parked cars.
eeeeek
wow ori
did you break anything?
Ha ha Ru. It was three on the tree, this was the 60's
I just don't worry about abduction, in the grand scheme of things. It would be like constantly worrying about the possibility that they might have a brain tumor. I worry more about my kids being bitten by dogs while we're on a walk than I do about random strangers. Stranger danger is hugely overblown.
Wow, I disagree. But then, I know someone who used to work for The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
do you live in a small town Mael?
Nothing was broken -- just dinged up. But one time when I was about 12 I was riding with a friend in the middle of nowhere and she fell off her horse and broke her arm. I rode back and got help.
suburbs of boston, ruru
To be young and Dumb again.....
fewer than 100 kids are abducted by strangers in the whole country yearly
if you had a Lassie then she could have run back to fetch help for Timmy Ori
He must not have a heart, kids or common sense.....
Stranger danger is not overblown. There are A LOT of weirdos out there. And child pornography is rampant these days.
again, most missing children are runaways (often times for good reason, unfortunately) or taken by a non-custodial parent
oh.. I'd worry about my kids being run over by crazy Boston drivers
most child abuse happens not from strangers, but from family members or acquaintances
(and Duggers Mael)
that I worry about, ru
duggers count as family, alas
Duggars?
right, those people
totally creeped me out.. glad he's in jail
The Duggar guy was not just abusing his own family.
no, he also downloaded child pornography
which was probably created by someone abusing children they knew, not ones they kidnapped off the street
how sick do you have to be to do that?
it's horrifying that it is mostly family members, but that's the reality. Most pedophiles abuse children they have access to
yeah..that's true
I wish the penalties were harsher
me too
Okay, so everyone can relax. Your kids are perfectly safe. Remember, you heard it here, stranger danger is overblown.
I mean, I heard it from the actual stats, molly :)
Although I think the thousands of parents whose children are abducted by strangers would disagree.
it's less than 100 per year in the US, Molly
and I feel for their parents, obviously
it's devastating
and terrifying
but it doesn't rule my life, much like plane crashes don't stop me from taking my kids on vacation. I worry much more about more prevalent dangers, like drowning and car accidents and bullying and drug use, etc
I would add gun violence to my list of worries.
that too
absolutely
though thankfully we're a little insulated from that here in MA
I'm not suggesting that people worry about anything. It is just a good idea to be as safe as possible regarding your kids. Because you don't get a do-over when you come out of the store and find an empty car. And don't tell me that doesn't happen, because it does.
Molly, it's clear you are entrenched in your narrative, but I invite you to consider this: no parent can protect their child from every single danger, but we can prioritize the dangers, and in addition, teach our kids how to deal with danger. For example, I'm not going to submit my kiddo to potentially traumatizing fear of being abducted while getting off the school bus, but I am going to foster open communication about harassment and sexual abuse, which is almost 1000x more likely to happen to my child before they reach the age of 18. I'm also going to train my kid how to safely navigate through the world, such as crossing the street, etc. At a certain point, common sense comes into play.
exactly
I'm much much more concerned about my child being exposed to anti lgbt attitudes, for example
because I know that, statistically, lgbt youth are at a much much higher risk of suicide attempts
And Molly, I understand your fears, grounded in reason or not -- and respect your right to express them. Please respect our opinions too.
I am not "entrenched in a narrative". I do have my opinions about children and safety. I don't believe any parent is wrong for putting the safety of their children as a top priority.
that's what I worry about. About them being bullied at school and it affecting their mental health. About them getting into a car with a drunk peer when they're older.
Again, none of the opinions expressed here are 'right' or 'wrong.' They just are.
"grounded in reason or not" That is respect for my opinion folks.😊
the problem is just that we, as parents, can't make that decision anymore. I can't make a judgement call that it's safe to leave my kids in the car at the store for 15 minutes, or to teach them to walk off the bus when it's age appropriate (and that's going to differ child to child, obviously).
ch1212 - "grounded in reason or not" is pretty snarky.
The problem is we need a middle ground. We don't want to go back to the days when parents like Ru's could go off and leave a 5 year old alone for the weekend. (Please God don't let someone argue that we should)
oh certainly not
i was precocious :D
there are definitely ways in which we need to keep children safer, but it's a challenge to identify what is statistically significant and what isn't because it's an EMOTIONAL reaction most of the time. We're afraid of strangers more than we are of grandpa Charlie, or whatever, but one of them is definitely more likely to abuse your kids and it ain't the stranger
Still are 😊
We do need a middle ground. We have to protect children but let them make mistakes and grow into adults. They can't do that when watched like a hawk every second of every day.
yep
Time to put your bow tie picture back up Ru.
ha
and to be clear, I sit here terrified of my kids turning into teenagers so :)
You should be
I apologize. It wasn't intended to be snarky, I was thinking about how the narrative has gotten so overblown despite the hard facts and stats. There are a lot of people who believe a lot of narratives that have questionable evidence to support them. But you're right, it did sound snarky, and I apologize!
but to make a parallel: I want to be free, as a parent, to demystify alcohol for my teens. I don't want them to sneak it and I don't want them to binge. I want them to try it and learn, not feel like it's this forbidden fruit that they will have to gorge on at parties
As stated earlier, none of what I said is based on some irrational fear. I know someone who used to work for The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Oh, good chance that no matter how much you "demystify it" they will do both those things.
Are you going to do that with drugs too?
Better run and do my errands. It's going to hit 115 here today.
weed, probably
i have to run to work too.. great discussion everyone
Holy God, you Left Coasters need a break.

Stranger things have happened.

I emailed Mark/Lickety about the list problem
are you talking about Lickety's list for today? I didn't have any problem accessing it; I'm using it right now.
Oh, ok, I just closed Lickety's list and tried to reopen it and it's now not working. That's a drag. But anyway I'm done so let me know if you need clues.
Again, Lickety has been alerted. I'm sure he will fix things next time he's around.
GA 7 36 please
it's like ga 6/24 but you double the middle consonant....
I have two ga 6 24 words but must need the third one
oh ty pen i found rhe 7 but still missing one 6 24
do you have the one with no repeating consonant?
There are 2 ga6/24 with a repeating consonant
One is like the French for boy, but replace a consonant
there is a 6 and a 7 that are almost identical with the 7 having a repeating consonant....the other ga 6 that I have refers to like an attic....
ty, Nancy for letting me know there were 3 ga6/24 - I wouldn't have found it otherwise

Is the list still unavailable?
it was unavailable about five minutes ago....just checked...
Thanks for the info ... tried both Edge & Chrome with no luck. This morning it loaded via Chrome.
i think the server that hosts the list is down....
Of course with the remaining 44 left I was going to use for help! Oh well.
I now have all but 4 - I'll put a list up in my profile shortly
Will check your list a little later ... thanks for the effort!
yw
I opened the list earlier and still have it up - if anyone needs anything.
Can you copy it and put it in your profile?
Of course, I'm sure it has all of your words in it...
Will do.
My list is now up (less the 4 words I don't have yet) - M, N, and 2 A, 3 5-letter and 1 6-letter
Thanks to everyone who posts lists - will definitely help with my last 10 words

Add Ag 6/24 to Gillie's list

ty
Glad to hear it's up. I let my excel expire and can't copy.
I'm using OpenCalc, although it's a bit of a nuisance
Still can't find that last n5
Maybe it has something to do with lickety's list being available on a discontinued platform?
Oh, found it - na5/12
i am down to 2....G and T....a 5 and a 6....
anyone want to guess my missing G?

My Hosting provider has got some issues for the last few hours. Clues were up right? and then not accessible?
Hopefully it'll be resolved soon without any action from me
That's right - the clues were there yesterday

I'm glad that is sorted, thank you.
