5:50 am

nice little Sunday morning puzzler!

5:52 am

Hi aslindy and Deeha.

5:56 am

Have you noticed that most of the words allowed that have an A-E combination say 'no definition'? Arethey a result of mis-typing or are they invented?!!

5:57 am

I don't check definitions as often as I should.

5:57 am

And I guess none of the Enable nerds ever had someone bogart a joint

6:28 am

63 left for later, hagd or night. ta

wonder how that term ever got started, Molly

6:45 am

Google is an amazing resource...1969, "to keep a joint in your mouth," dangling from the lip like Humphrey Bogart's cigarette in the old movies, instead of passing it on. First attested in "Easy Rider." The word was also used 1960s with notions of "get something by intimidation, be a tough guy" (again with reference to the actor and the characters he typically played). In old drinking slang, Captain Cork was "a man slow in passing the bottle." The Oxford English Dictionary says it is "with allusion to Bogart's frequent on-screen smoking, especially to the long drags he took on cigarettes

impressed with that doesnt do it justice - you are good!

just stumbled on the 2nd nine - gonna need a java refresher

I am stuch on both Y's and the lone E in the 1st column. Can someone help me reach NBT/NBS?

Don't know an alcohol with j and that spelling. I know the beer like one with an L

7:08 am

Top row is a common y word with a double consonant ending and plural

Thank you Molly. I never saw that with a double letter. So much to learn today

Ethnic slur alert.

started

hello. do tell as I don't know any and therefore never see them.

Sorry. I think the ethnic slur alert should pop up when there is no other possible meaning for the word. Da4.

oh, I do know that one from here.

hadn't gotten over there yet

not sure I've ever heard it in the wild

As someone the other day told me hat hebe, which I know as an ethnic slur can be a shrub. If you see one that has no other possible application, alert.

And there are the two misiogynist words that pop up. In our current century, you can't rely on "something the censors wouldn't;t allow on TV, because everything is.

in today's grid? I still have 263 words left, haven't seen a lot of the board

No not today. Historically. Today's grid seems pretty tame, unless da4mars it.

well yeah, any of those words that are on the word list this game pulls from is going to be here when it's in the grid

Here it is. da4 noun, plural da·gos, da·goes.(often initiaSlang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive. a contemptuous term used to refer to a person of Italian or sometimes Spanish origin or descent.

No other meaning is offered.

There is a Spanish word today.

there's probably 20 french ones and 50 scots ones

3:16 pm

Kaplan I had never heard that hebe slur before - it's dreadful. The hebe words I know come from Hebe, cup-bearer to the gods. There is a form of schizophrenia called hebephrenia, because the patient laughs all the time (as one would if they were continually served wine!)

So there's no real criteria about words being English language. What else would we do with epee and cwms.

Hebe was something Archie Bunker might have, and did say. I asked my husband what it meant to him and he said slur.

3:18 pm

not in more words there isn't. it's just an arbitrary word list. totally useless except for this game!

I guess that's why I don't know all the slurs. All in the Family was before my time so I've seen limited amounts of it.

3:19 pm

anyway I am off, any clues wanted?

have a good day, saanich

The Hebes are the Hebrews. I would feel funny saying hey, there's a lot of little hebes in my garden.

3:19 pm

hi, and bye carla, same to you!

ahhh. I wasn't sure if you were saying heeb or heebee, and I couldn't figure out why a type of bush would be turned into a slur.

Is a hebe a type of bush?

if it makes you feel better, the bush is pronounced hee-bee

And spelled hebe? I guess that passes.

yes

Heebie-jeebies

yes, i wondered if the heebie jeebies bothers you. I say that but have no idea of the origin.

No,. I don't know it as a slur.

It means creepy feeling.

that's how I know it as

There are some words that are banned from use because people don't know the meaning of the word...like a professor who had to apologize for using the word niggardly.

Can't use the word anymore.

we just talked about this the other day

Oh yeah, we did. That's when language changes because people don't have the vocabulary.

Jewelry: not a slur.

But could make an interesting pun.

Remember when misgendering wasn't a concept? I have to be super careful about misgendering some people.

As Archie Bunker Sang- And you knew who you were then/girls were girls and men were men..."And that was before transgenderism was big on the scene.

don't forget Lola by The Kinks

Excellent- was just listening to them. And Lou Reed and the Warhol Factory.

And what did Reed say "and the colored girls go doo doo doo doo etc.

And David Bowie, Rebel Rebel. Got your mother in a whirl. Not sure if you're a boy or a girl."

I often wonder if on-line spaces like this if there is multiethnic participation or if this is one of those things White People Do.

I remember a Black woman chatting once here about her experience running in a white neighborhood. I would guess like any online game there are all peoples playing.

Did she stay?

I think she was a lurker that just spoke up that day and so I have no idea.

3:53 pm

33 left...

bea! 113 left.

3:53 pm

Hey, carla!

my goal is HOET today. so far so good until I got to the bottom A.

3:59 pm

Good afternoon.

hey scrabbs

4:00 pm

Good afternoon, scrabs.

4:01 pm

Hi Carla and Bea. How is everybody?

meh. thanks. how are you?

4:01 pm

I'm good here.

4:02 pm

Carla, there are 3 ae's.

thanks, had found the ae4 for half on that tile, but missed the bigger ones. as soon as you said that I realized what it was due to the op words I just found.

4:03 pm

You greyed the tile?

still one short

I find it so hard to remember to call an individual "they." It's usually young people. I might have found a neutral pronoun handy at age 15 or so. Now I find it confusing ;;75

4:05 pm

ad5?

I refuse to use they for one person. will just not use a pronoun.

I have ad5 and ag5

4:06 pm

I agree. They for one person sounds like multiple personality disorder

well, I think I have HOET with 97 left

4:07 pm

ag4?

I have that too. oh, the ad5 I have is from the other A

so I need another AD5 that comes from the bottom?

4:09 pm

There is only one ad5

4:13 pm

It's the other ag4

4:14 pm

I'm usually a lurker, but I can't handle "they" pronouns for one person. Why not a new pronoun, something like "ge"?

4:16 pm

The English language does not currently have neuter pronouns. I find it so difficult to use the chosen pronouns for my non-binary and trans kids. I have known these kids for years so the change is difficult. I apologize when I screw up.

4:16 pm

I'm usually a lurker, but I can't handle calling one person "they, them". Regardless of their gender identity, they are still one person. Why not a new pronoun, something like "ge"?

4:17 pm

Yes, singular vs plural is not congruent in our minds.

4:19 pm

OOPs sorry for the double post.

4:19 pm

The easiest thing is to just drop pronoun usage and refer to someone by name only

4:20 pm

I need to make salads for my bunnies.

4:31 pm

Darn. I missed the convo on something that has me annoyed to no end. Well...next time.

4:35 pm

neopronouns have been tried for years and years and literally none of them have truly caught on. using "they" for singular-unknown has a very long history- extending that usage to preferences is completely reasonable. it doesn't take long to get used to it.

4:37 pm

Clue for re6.30 The First. (We should title these like royalty.)

8:27 pm

I'm here, working on my last 27

8:28 pm

struggling with the b's here - 0nly have 27 so far

8:29 pm

Need any clues? I'm finished the B's

8:29 pm

I don't know what I need - anything weird I guess

8:34 pm

ba5/18 is common enough - a large flat transport vessel, but you can get 2 ba6/30 from it by adding vowels, and another ba5/18 by substituting a different high-point letter.

8:35 pm

There are 2 versions of the French for beaten - ba5/16 and ba6/27

8:36 pm

ty got most of the ones from the flat water craft, missing a 6/30 there

8:37 pm

I should have said adding/inserting a vowel

8:37 pm

and the french - ty

8:38 pm

There's a small convenience store and plural, and a golf term, with past

8:39 pm

ty - got all of those now - 10 more

8:39 pm

ot sure about the convenience store, but should be able to come up with the golf

8:42 pm

got the golf - don't know how I missed that - get enough of them!

8:43 pm

They have a lot of the convenience store in New York, I've heard

8:44 pm

never been to NY -- if it yiddish or italian, I probably wouldn't know it

8:45 pm

It's Spanish - you've probably heard it sometime

8:45 pm

oh - monkeyed one -- lived + peach state -- is that the one

8:46 pm

It does end with the peach state

8:46 pm

2 more g's to find -- that helped a lot - ty

8:47 pm

yw

8:47 pm

going to list as soon as I get down to 100

8:50 pm

daba isn't a word? - one of Fred Flinstone's favs isn't it?

8:51 pm

ok list - here I come

8:51 pm

Only as part of the complete phrase "Yabba dab(b)a doo" - and generally I think Fred Flintstone was the only to use it :)

8:56 pm

now we get to the silly ones...

9:00 pm

de 7-8 please?

9:00 pm

First part of something you use to wash clothes

9:01 pm

ty gillie

9:01 pm

never heard it used before

9:02 pm

think someone was dreaming on that one

9:03 pm

Yeah, I don't know it, but I think it has been in the grid before

9:08 pm

fw! Any clues wanted before I leave?

9:12 pm

ga 7 please?

9:13 pm

Flip the last two letters of the word before, then add a vowel

9:14 pm

ty gille

9:14 pm

9:15 pm

9:17 pm
