2:29 am

Hot and bothered lol

2:50 am

oh, yeah, sometimes I forget it's summer down there!

4:45 am

It's just the opposite here. 25 degrees and snowing like a banshee.

6:59 am

... is this the hardest grid I've seen? ... sure seems so ... 60% of the words in an hour and a half and it has been slow ... ... must be off ... luck to all who continue the struggle

7:24 am

well i got ga 8 but not getting other. i agree doseffing. hard grid.

7:42 am

26 degrees and snowing but very lightly. but supposed to snow all day !!!

8:04 am

i also have to clear the car off. and i agree about ice. but it is a pretty world with snow and without it is grey and depressing. snow makes me feel happier.

8:06 am

snow is the best

8:06 am

ice is the worst

8:06 am

ice is good for cocktails

8:06 am

snow makes everything brighter and lighter

8:07 am

i grew up in connecticut and from mid december to end of march we had snow and having snow on the ground was always pretty. Much prettier than without snow. but life was different. along our roads there was sand and dirt in barrels so if you got stuck you threw the sad or dirt and you could continue to drive. every hill had a barrel on side for use if you got stuck. it had a shovel in it. and no one stole the shovels either. the town did this to help us all out.

8:08 am

life was much much nicer in the 1950s

is the single N a weird word or just hiding from me

8:09 am

for some people, yeah. for others it was much much worse in the 1950s

8:09 am

true. for blacks life was much worse.

8:10 am

hiding. what holds up your head carla?

8:10 am

and let's just say I love the medical advancements in the last 70 years :)

8:11 am

ahh so true. if you got cancer, you were gone in the 50s. there were no survivors.

well, my mom didn't have running water (and had an outhouse) and lived in a 2 room house with 6 other people and went to a 2 room school in the 50s.

8:12 am

my poor aunt's baby died of rotavirus at 15 months old, which is now part of our routine vax

8:13 am

wow carla. where was that? actually in 1969, i lived upstate NY and many had outhouses and no water. so yes, it was not as pleasant a life.

8:13 am

my mom had just survived abject poverty and war in Italy, yeah. My dad almost got drafted by the germans but he was 6 months too young by the end of the war

8:13 am

mael, i dont know what rotavirus is.

8:14 am

it causes severe diarrhea and kids can die if they get too dehydrated

mkg, it was in southwest virginia right at the tennessee border. and they didn't get electricity until 1948.

8:15 am

carla that is amazing. but life was so so different. wow. was it in the mountains or in a city?

in the mountains

8:17 am

we had electricity, but no air conditioning. i remember there was a department store whose name i cant recall, and there were huge fans in the ceilings which moved the hot air in the summers. i also remember that there was a system of forced air that took your money and receipt to a cashier somewhere and returned your change to you.......life was so different. also remember elevators with metal doors that opened and shut? and the entire elevator was metal and you could see yourself going up and down. very different.

what's crazy is like an hour away is biltmore house, that had electricity in 1898, 50 years before they got it. 💰

8:18 am

Carla was it appalatia? my father loved the people from there. said they were so smart.

yep, appalachia. and my dad hated movies like deliverance that portrayed appalachians as dumb hillbillies.

8:20 am

but there are some dumb hillbillies there no?

and he was right, and it still goes on today in movies and TV

of course, just like there are dumb people everywhere in this country (and multiplying)

8:20 am

I spent my summers in the mountain shack my grandpa built to graze his cows and we didn't have running water or electricity, just an outhouse (that was full of scorpions so we just went in the woods instead haha)> Oil lamps at night and we had to walk to the fountain a half mile away to get water. There's a beauty to it, or at least there was for me when I was a kid, but it would have been brutal year round

ooh, scorpions

8:21 am

mael, scorpions???????/ugh!

yeah, no way would I want to go use an outhouse in the middle of the night in winter

8:22 am

teeny ones, but scorpions none the less. Nothing worse than having one of those run over your shoe when you're on the toilet

8:22 am

i went to girl scout camp with outhouses. there were bees in it and one girl got bitten! then they called an exterminator but after she was bitten we were all afraid to use it.

8:23 am

ugh......scorpions.........ugh

I also went to girl scout camp with outhouses be for some reason they were called latrines.

8:23 am

same thing right?

8:23 am

what state was that mael?

yep

8:23 am

Italy :)

8:23 am

life was sure different. waxed paper was used for sandwiches. it was a huge advance when they developed wax paper bags to put your sandwich in.

8:24 am

in the dolomites, near Austria

8:24 am

i hate the use of plastic wrap and alum foil.

8:24 am

sounds nice mael.

apparently we have 2 types of scorpions here in SC. one of my neighbors was saying she kept finding them in her house and google confirmed it.

8:25 am

eeek

8:25 am

I'm pretty sure we don't have any here in MA

8:25 am

i keep remembering that the insects will inherit the world one day. they certainly are hartier than humans.

ooh, found an 8 and then noticed it was my 2nd 8

8:25 am

scorpions in italy wow

8:26 am

mael are you a native of italy?

8:26 am

yeah

8:26 am

I moved to the US for college and stayed

8:26 am

have to focus on getting more words. but pretty stuck.

8:26 am

off for now. enjoy the beauty of the snow if you can.

8:26 am

oh.

this is why mael's super word nerddom is even more impressive, it's her second language.

bye mkg

8:27 am

bye mkg!

8:28 am

back later or tomorrow.

8:28 am

knowing Italian is a huge advantage when it comes to the Latin based words, since they are very similar :)

I'm sure you see the latin plurals better too

8:31 am

I wish it would snow here but it's just temps in the teens for the rest of the weekend

8:31 am

yep, the only disadvantage is that I see all the italian words that aren't words for enable haha

ha

8:32 am

for a lot of players hokie english isn't a first language

ruru, I told you my first language is appalachian english

8:33 am

is there such a thing?

yes

8:33 am

oh.. didn't know that

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalach\nian_English

argh, thought for sure that was short enough to not break the chat

8:34 am

my first language was Brooklynese. When I first moved to CT, age 26, I slowly lost New Yorkese

per usual, remove the \n from that link

8:35 am

my first language was greek as a kid, then learned english in school

was it all greek to you?

8:36 am

yup

8:38 am

I think it's awesome how flexible our brains are

some more than others 🤣

8:42 am

case in point, today's grid is a pain in my butt

yeah, first pass not going great for me

also, I couldn't see anything in connections

8:43 am

haven't done connections yet but got wordle in 2 today, lucky

I thought I had wordle in 2 until the reveal got to the last letter. 2nd day in a row I was one off on 2nd guess.

8:44 am

was off 1 on my second guess yesterday, but also my 3rd and 4th haha

8:45 am

ended up in a hole

that's the worst

8:46 am

I feel your pain!

oh, finally saw that single N. geez.

and now I get that mkg was cluing it. 🤣 thought she was just calling me weird.

8:47 am

well you are a bit weird, but you're our weirdo

awww

8:50 am

to molly when she comes back: I did get the in8 :)

I got it when I saw a clue in the chat. and I did see her say that.

8:51 am

i don't have the in 8

8:51 am

there's a un7 i can't find either according to the flip geeks

I do not have that. but winston calls. BRB

8:54 am

un7 builds on un4/5

is that good? did you have to get up earlier for the 7am that never happened?

9:17 am

yeah, it was cancelled at the last minute

boo

9:18 am

neither good nor bad, though would have enjoyed a little more sleep :)

9:19 am

yup I don't like this grid at all

still looking for that middle E

and now the 8 I learned of from champ

9:20 am

does la8 build off of la6?

that's the first I'm hearing of it. will look.

of course I don't have an la6

9:21 am

well don't rest until you find it :)

heads up, I'm not getting clues even more than usual today

ok, now I see it, thanks

9:22 am

you shouldn't rest on your la6

9:22 am

no...la6/24

we extend this la6 and hardy/hearty handshake

9:27 am

and here we are back to the Latin hokie lol

9:27 am

I believe it was a question, rather than a statement

9:28 am

yes

I managed to find the la6 but never seen it before

9:28 am

yeah, was new to me too

9:29 am

it usually ends with a A

I did try it with an i at the end

no one knows my movie quote? where'd molly go?

the actor who delivered the line was later higgins in magnum pi

9:31 am

okay, I got the la8 but it is a stand alone word

9:32 am

oh...wow

9:32 am

not sure I know anything else he's been in

then you haven't seen this classic

9:33 am

I may have, just don't recall it

it also has the original willy wonka

9:34 am

oh, blazing saddles?

✅✅✅

9:34 am

:)

9:34 am

that movie did not age well

9:35 am

I still have never seen blazing saddles, oops

higgins plays howard johnson

it could never be made today, true

9:35 am

it's twoo

so you have seen it

blazing saddles is hysterical

mael, it's on netflix and paramount+ right now. just don't watch with your kids.

TO!

carla! three inches shoveled!

9:37 am

I'll make a point to watch it! I'm sure it's a classic for a reason!

it has something to offend everyone

whew, don't overdo it, TO

the snow or the movie?

I'm just wondering how it will translate for a millennial from Italy. or are you a young gen x, mael?

the snow shoveling!

snow is very light want to get it before it packs becuase it's well below freezing and will freeze

my family in TN/VA got another inch or so this morning

i have read interviews with cleavon little and he loved making it. now it would cause an uproar, but be assured Nel Brooks would make it today if he were alive.

he is alive!

97 years old

everyone else I can think of in it is dead

it's hard to tel nowadays. everyone is dying

9:41 am

yes, I've seen it

as is history with them

i am wondering if godiva will go well with hot cocoa.

9:42 am

It was meant as satirical mael, to push boundaries of prejudice in a comedic way, but definitely a bit awkward now

I bet mel brooks is the only one in it that is still alive

9:43 am

hi all.help with la8 please

what kind of godiva? I can't imagine it wouldn't go well with that.

ah, wxpn is playing zappa, don't eat the yellow snow. good advice, always.

9:56 am

why does it make you sad, hurshy

9:56 am

because it's about disease, desperation, false hope...

9:57 am

more than 1/2 and no 7s. help with any 7 please

9:57 am

if you want to make peace with an enemy you might try to conci7 them

9:58 am

is that a co7 or ci7?

9:59 am

ci

9:59 am

it's a ci7, it's just usually one sees it as part of a longer word like con10 would be

9:59 am

there is no O :)

9:59 am

cr7 is key

10:00 am

ty gemstan

10:00 am

back to peri's request: le7, person who inherits

10:20 am

good morning from snowy paradise. Mother Nature doesn't seem to know that Christmas is over and it's time to thaw out.

10:20 am

mother nature's been doing what she wants since long before christmas existed, lol

good one, hurshy! adding that one to my dictionary of shell-bell

10:21 am

the pun you mean?

Yes

10:22 am

cool :)

This is not Mother Nature. This is Climate Change. Wickedstepmother nature?

nurt

10:27 am

snow and cold in january is normal in the northern US and canada...

10:27 am

if it were thawing out already that would be a far more concerning climate change symptom!

Last year Boston had no snow. The pattern has shifted fro snow in November and December to snow Lin mid-january or later. No snow at all in December. This is not normal. It's been shifting every year, and the wildlife in urban areas is also shifting. Coyotes, turkeys, rabbits...it used to be just squirrels.

10:31 am

given that overall things are different and changing, i still say for it to be cold on January 19th is normal.

Back in the day there was something called a January thaw, which was a break from October -January snowfall, before proceeding into the rest of winter. That was in the Adirondacks.

Yes the cold is normal, and the warmth in December was not.

It comes later every year.

10:33 am

i think all nan was saying was perhaps a common human wish for snow for christmas and then feeling done with winter and wanting spring to come... lol

10:33 am

and then we go all off on a tangent

10:34 am

that and we don't usually get this much snow -- not that the moisture isn't welcome. We do need a slow melt though. Much of the land around here is at least 50% clay and we have had several years of drought now.

10:35 am

Wildlife in urban areas has a lot to do with wildlife being displaced from previously undeveloped areas

10:36 am

... the more snow you have on the ground now nan, the fewer and smaller the fires will be this summer ... you need all the water in the ground that you can get

10:36 am

still missing one 8 and 3x 7

10:38 am

ditto

10:38 am

The traffic reporter on our local news looks like she came straight to the station from her part-time gig as a cocktail waitress

10:38 am

also missing the o and the middle a

10:38 am

og4/6

10:39 am

ac4, al4 and 5, don't have the fourth

10:40 am

ty hurshy -- usually get that og 4

ai 5/10 ... garlic I think

10:40 am

ah thanks dos

10:41 am

10:41 am

10:42 am

so, 8s i have are ga, la, re - is that what you have nan?

10:42 am

all easy words I should have found

10:43 am

i have an in8

10:43 am

i suspected there might be a long i word

10:43 am

yes the same hurshy - ty bea

10:44 am

i can't see past phantom intellect

10:44 am

me too hurshy

10:44 am

just tried it again

10:45 am

there is an in 8...

Excuse me, Esther something wrong with tangents?

10:46 am

Anyone else want to chime in on the in8?

10:46 am

ah - we have had that in 8 before

10:47 am

first came across it when visiting Prague

10:48 am

who is Esther? i don't think anything is wrong with tangents, but i know sometimes people get exasperated when i go on them.

10:48 am

Esther Rolle...Florida Evans!

10:48 am

anyone want a clue besides it being an architectural word?

10:48 am

Eali

Not Esther- is there? I thought I was very much on point.

10:53 am

7's: ci, cr, el, le, ?, ?, ?

10:54 am

i'm royally stumped on the le

11:04 am

found it via MW... sort of hard to clue...

11:04 am

ty hurshy

11:05 am

the one other than the inheritor?

11:05 am

yeah

11:05 am

a white, crystalline, water-soluble amino acid, C6H13NO2, obtained by the decomposition of proteins and made synthetically: essential in the nutrition of humans and animals

11:06 am

that does't really help -- surprise ;)

11:07 am

ends with a four meaning movie or the start of movie words....

11:07 am

ok. it goes with a 6. now, if you take le and add the reverse of the acronym for where they put sick preemies, you get the 6. then add vowel for 7.

11:07 am

or pen's clue.

11:07 am

11:42 am
