Wait, am I understanding chat? It's kind of weird that anyone is still Catholic?
If catholic still means universal and all - inclusive …… then yes
Tyvm Bzzn
Well I am no longer a practicing Catholic, but
i can see how those who are would find that offensive.
Why. …. It also means†free from provincial predjudices or attachments as in “catholic in one’s tastes†according to the dictionary…….
Do you understand that Catholocism is a religion and way of faith that means a lot to some people?
Yes …….as I am one
But you think it's weird that "anyone still is one"?
good morning :)
In the ecumenical sense , no
stats for the i please?
ia6.21
no hope of finding that!
ends with most of Halloween saying first word
This is where word-search sites come in handy. For instance, search for "ia----" on www.morewords.com, and you find that there are only 3 possibilities
got it - ty - sounds like part of a word to me
(just trying to teach a new trick to an old dog - but the old trick works just as well, I guess)
Good Morning
pi 5/14, pls
Gillie, I've never used morewords before until just now, and it says I can only use A-Z and ? for blank tiles, but it only accepts 2 of the ? instead of 4. What am I missing?
pi5/14 dutiful spirit of reverence for God
pi5/14 dutiful spirit of reverence for God
ty Molly
morewords...use - for blanks not ?
down to 25 - back after breakfast
aand use Chrome as a browser not Edge
is there more than one 'morewords' site? The one I'm on restricts blank tiles to only a ?, with a limit of 2. So, I put in ia???? and it won't take it. I tried dashes, underscores, etc. and the same message pops up -- only letters A-Z and only a ? for a blank tile.
what difference does chrome make?
I always use Chrome. Better service
guess ssit is what one is used to -- started with whatever ms browser we had in the 80's and never switched
stomach is growlig - ye
Okay ... I just switched to chrome and tried that ... this time, it allowed me to use 4 of the ? but when I clicked enter, there were no results. I think maybe I'm on a different 'morewords' site than you all speak of. I'll research some more.
morewords.com
Thanks. I'll check that out.
Oh God< Nan is still using Internet Exploder
I have used Edge and it's total crap
the reason i said that was just because the whole pedophilia scandal has been so huge and it's quite a turnoff
That has nothing to do with people's faith in the religion
it might make one question whether it's a church worth being associated with, that's all
since there are other flavors of Christianity, one might think of switching to one of them
but i really admire people who stick with it even when they are negatively affected by official Catholic teaching - like gay Catholics, for instance (and I don't mean celibate ones)
Oh, you would have to understand what Catolics believe to know how "switching flavors" wouldn't work
it shows they're not just Catholic out of habit/path of least resistance
well, molly, my impression is that the actual beliefs of individuals often differ markedly from the official beliefs and teachings. for instance most american catholics do not agree with the teaching against birth control.
so i would think that would make "switching flavors" more plausible in some cases perhaps than in others
Of course. And no Catholic I know endorses pedohilia. It is about the faith, not the deviations from the faith.
and actually, i personally have known a ton of ex-catholics who went evangelical, and now i know some who've gone UU
and probably the largest group is those who just become agnostic or atheist
Catholics leave the church all the time. I just questioned why it was necessary to question why some still retain their faith.
well, like i said, the pedophilia thing was huge. if it were one priest, i'd call that a deviation. but the breadth of it - plus then more came out about the raping of nuns, and forced abortions when they got pregnant - it's a really massive "deviation" that turns one's stomach
Awful things have been done in the name of Allah, but I would never say that I wonder why anyone is still Muslim.
ah but most muslims might not be living as much in a "cancel culture" environment
At one point in time, there was an argument that if the Church just lifted the celibate rule, there would be little or no pedaephilia going on. But of course, we know that there are just as many child molesters in the general population as are in specialized positions, i.e. pastors, priests, scoutmasters, teachers, etc. Statistically, the vast majority of known child molesters are men with wives/girlfriends.
I'm done. This conversation is pointless.
but i mean, if someone finds out that they know a person in real life who has pedophilic desires - even if they haven't acted on them at all - most people are so revolted that they want to have nothing more to do with that person (which i think is a mistake on behalf of society)
Religion- let's not go there. Secrecy and isolation breed unspeakable acts in any family, religious group. We all grew up with particular mythologies that may be beneficent- or quite the opposite. Good things and evil things have been done in the name of religion.
that's all true too, ch1212
From a Guardian article about Lawrence Hecker, reviewing his trial testimony: "One of the more stunning exchanges in Hecker’s deposition saw him look over a list of 50 archdiocesan priests who were retired and still living. Most of the names were in blue – except 11, which were in red. Trahant established that the names of those in red were living, retired priests with abuse allegations that the archdiocese itself deemed credible. “That would [mean] 22% of the retired, incardinated priests in the archdiocese of New Orleans have credible claims of sexual abuse against them,†Trahant said. “That’s a lot, isn’t it? That’s over one in five.†"
i guess it's just when it gets to the point where, when you mention an organization, for a significant amount of people, pedophilia is the first idea that springs to mind... well...
Molly, I understand the point you are making, which seems to question in a manner intended to shame, why someone would wonder about other people's beliefs and adherence to them. It's okay that we don't understand why people believe or think a certain way.
And 22% of living retired archdiocesan priests with credible abuse allegations against them is a *lot*.
i didn't actually mean people SHOULDN'T continue to be catholic, more that it surprises my instincts, that they do
just as it surprised me to learn that a caterpillar actually dissolves into liquid goo before turning into a butterfly
it makes me go, "whoa, weird" but not in a judgmental way, just, hey, i wouldn't have expected that
if that makes any sense...
More from the article: "In both his 1999 confession and a summer 2023 interview with WWL and the Guardian, Hecker attributed his serial molestation of children to the libertine attitudes of the 1960s and 1970s. But molesting children was as illegal back then as it is now, Trahant pointed out during the deposition. Hecker then offered up an alternative explanation: he said the church taught him that priests could honor their promise of celibacy simply by ensuring they were never “alone with a woman in privateâ€."
Gillie, there is some truth in that, I think. I attended seminary and have a multitude of monks and priests who are friends. The sheer number of ones who are gay (celibate or not) at first amazed me. Then I realized, if you are a person who wants to serve God but whose church doesn't allow you to act out sexually, then joining a ministry where celibacy is a rule, kind of makes sense.
I would like to venture that a chat log for a word game is an inappropriate place to bring up this issue. It seems to be on a continuum of "why would anyone be Moslem given the events of 9/11, or why would anyone remain Jewish given whatever is attributed to us. Hursh, thou hast entered troubled waters. I understand your sentiment, but it's quite risky for a chat log.
In my forthcoming book, I have a section that talks about the history of child sexual abuse around the world, going back a couple thousand years.
wow, how do you manage to write that book without getting seriously depressed, ch1212?
On another note, I bought a very nice mood ring in a local bookstore for about 5 dollars. Then I bought one for the other hand. Right now the one on my right hand is aqua and the one on my left hand is yellow. Why does my left hand not know what my right hand is feeling?
i think those things are temperature based, kap? and i know at night i often have one foot fine and one foot freezing cold
Kaplan, you make a good point. This is why I so wish I could go visit with Hurshy and Hazel and some of our other insightful babblers. It would be so much fun to just ... discuss. Hurshy, I say this with great humor: It's easy when you suffer from depression in the first place. :D No, the book is about my journey through a very traumatic and abusive childhood, but along the way I examine current and historical perspectives into child abuse, the science of memory, etc.
would you say it's been cathartic to work on the book then?
Absolutely. I had never looked back over the entirety of 45+ years of healing, using various therapeutic modalities, the progress I've made, etc. So to see it all in my book felt humbling and gratifying. I hope it reaches the people who might benefit from it.
Lovely chatting, but Fed Ex is pulling up with packages! bbl.
anyway, sorry for my original not-really-thinking comment
