yes, he explained that our bodies do not want us to die, so to be able to tense up the muscles in order to get in another breath, you just never get into a deep sleep.
when i entered REM sleep that was when i stopped breathing, the jerk of my body trying to restart my breathing would waken me.

you know that sensation of falling when you are asleep? or maybe you don't.
yeah I know that, but that was not it, according to him. He said once you are in a truly deep sleep, the muscles are more or less paralysed (or you would act out your dreams, lol). But with apnoea, the body starts to have this big need of oxygen when you do not breathe, and in order to honor that need, it tenses up muscles to get you to wake up enough. Your body and brain simply will not allow you to go into deep sleep, because it would kill you.

taking me forever to finish this grid, 8 left, but i keep getting up to check on the soup. i used to have a cast iron heat diffuser - you know how pea soup (and sauces) end up browning on the bottom of the pan? that used to help, but it's long gone. now, i use a flipped over cast iron cornbread pan, but still keep a close eye on it
