Mmm, the day after Thanksgiving. Pie for breakfast
I haven't eaten anything since he last whoopie pie at 1 pm yesterday and i'm still not hungry
Wow, you eat the Thanksgiving meal early
hello all
we're having Thanksgiving today, since my son in law had to work yesterday
yeah, we have thanksgiving lunch
it's great, everyone's out of your house by like 3
we always had the big meal in the early afternoon, then play cards and games and watch football, eventually having turkey sandwiches on rolls for supper
but that was when we'd go to my grandma's house, and all my aunts and uncles were there, and a bunch of cousins
We eat around 3 so everyone can head home for the later afternoon game and lounge around in their comfortable clothes. Although, we don't really dress up too much for Thanksgiving.
yeah, we never dressed up, though we did use the good china and real silverware. I remember having to polish that silverware
I'm looking forward to tomorrow, too. One of my nieces and her husband are stopping here on their way home, with their little baby who was named after my dad.
I use the good silver and my Thanksgiving dinnerware. It makes for a festive table.
I store my silver in plastic and it doesn't usually tarnish. All except the very old pie server that has been in the family a long time. That I usually have to polish.
I don't own any actual silver, and my good dishes are still in boxes... somewhere around here. I have seen the Christmas dishes, at least.
The only reason I have silver is that I got it when my Mom passed. It's nice to have for holiday meals.
su/9
We had a special hinged wooden box lined with... something soft like velvet, with separate slots for each knife in the lid and spaces for all the different forks and spoons in the base. and all the serving pieces, etc.
it's just a regular lunch here, but with a turkey. No one dresses up, we use our regular china, and I always have flowers on the table anyway :)
that all sounds lovely
I love flowers on the table.
I'll be back later, heading in to the Museum of Fine Arts for a daytime date with the husband, kids are getting deposited at their grandparents' house
That sounds nice mael, enjoy.
This is like a martha stewart chat from hell :D
I lost all my fall/thanksgiving decor when we had water in the basement. This year we stopped at Hobby Lobby, and all the fall stuff was on clearance 90% off, so I got some stuff to make a centerpiece for under $4
Oh, like you're not into table presentation.
I don't go overboard with it
just lots of glassware
You would have been proud of me Ru. My turkey was picture perfect and as tender as can be. The best part? No brining.
oh nice.. that's great
most of the time, I'm sitting here at the computer for meals. that will likely change now that my husband is retired and I'm not actually alone most of the time!
oh molly, what's the secret? I still have to bake a turkey today!
how big was the bird I am guessing pretty large with your group
After this year, as long as I get a fresh turkey, I am skipping the brine. It's a pain in the ass. No real secret. Put lots of butter under the skin, stuff it with carrots, celery, oios and half an apple and don't over cook it. My turkey was 18-20 pounds. Soup stock is on the stove.
We went to a restaurant and was super
we always get a big turkey, and I put lots of cooked turkey in the freezer, along with lots of turkey broth, for soup all winter
I think my turkey is just under 18 pounds. No celery, but I often stuff orange wedges in.
when we left the restaurant we said "no clean up"
that's a huge bonus, bichon
i had a simple dinner yesterday.. not a lot of clean up
Celery is a big Thanksgiving staple for me. It goes in the stuffing, in the turkey and in the soup the next day. Somehow, the clean up doesn't bother me that much. It's the cleaning before that wears me out.
I like celery, but my husband hates it :(
I like celery here.. it's a nice snack
he also doesn't like cooked carrots. I don't know what's wrong with him. also he grew up in Wisconsin and doesn't drink beer!
wow.. carrots are delicious
The turkey roaster is the big clean up pain. No matter how much foil I use to line it, it still gets greasy. I think I used a half a roll of paper towels de-greasing it last night.
right? especially roasted ones!
For some people, it's a texture thing.
yeah, he won't eat things like oatmeal or squash because of the texture. but he likes tapioca, which I can't stand!
and he likes mashed potatoes... so I don't get the texture thing.
Okay, he's one of "those kind" of eaters. We should introduce him to Eva's ex.
i'm not big on tapioca either
I think it's because of however his mom made those things, because his sister doesn't like cooked carrots either. they were probably boiled to death, like most veg during those years.
that was my mom.. a really good baker, but a lousy cook
Oh my mother was terrible with vegetables. They were always like mush, and she never used fresh.
I don't like mushrooms, and that's mostly texture, except I don't like them raw either. but he loves them so I always give mine to him, and we're both happier that way.
so sort of a give and shitake between you two?
I don't like mushrooms either but it's the taste, not the texture. The only texture I have a problem with is slimy, like okra. Gross.
we had a lot of fresh veg because we had a big garden. with 6 kids, it was easier to afford veg that way. plus my dad came from a long line of farmers, so he knew a lot about gardening. but then he became an electrician, go figure.
haha ruru, exactly!
I love all kinds of mushrooms, especially chantrelles and morels
and truffles
love me some truffles
I like chocolate truffles, not the fungus kind
I'm one of the few people who won't eat mushrooms
I'm one of the few who can't eat raw tomatoes. Plus I don't like them, so that's ok.
wow you guys are picky
Says the guy who will only eat breakfast food for breakfast
um.... pizza for breakfast.. gross me out
raw tomatoes make me quite ill, so it's not really being picky.
really lindy don't go to Italy then
no plans to go there
i do.. northern Italy
Piedmonte and Tuscany
ot
Ru, I imagine you are blissful in Italy. Good food, good wine.
I've never gone.. really want to see the countryside mostly.. the food is incredible I hear.
Oh, for some reason, I thought you had been there.
My oldest went with a friend and loved it.
nope.. just france and scotland so far.. eventually Italy, france again and greece
Greece looks beautiful.
my brother went to greece like a dozen times it was his thing
I've never been to europe at all. the only other countries I've been to are canada and mexico. so far.
I love Canada..especially British Columbia
I've only been to the toronto area, and then on over to niagara falls
oh lindy Vancouver Island is one of the most beautiful places on earth.. so gorgeous there everywhere
well, I need to get going, probably no time to finish today, ending with 160 found. you all have fun1
have fun today lindy
speaking of Vancouver Island, it is freezing here

A friend of mine just posted that he made himself an old fashioned yesterday, and went to change the music to relax. When he came back, his drink was gone. One of his dogs climbed up, drained the drink, and was drunk as a skunk for a while!
my dogs have never done that
Mine either.
so the dog got shih tzued
Well done, sir!
:D
(punner's tourettes syndrome)
What did you do for Thanksgiving? Got my dog drunk.
true.. the old fashioned way too
He said nothing else on the table was touched. The dog was on a mission.
I haven't made an old fashioned since I had a sixty year old customer 40 years ago.
The Ds are annoying me today.
my friend has beer loving havanese.
That makes more sense to me. Hydration!
beer is always servied in the bottle at her place
No dog would come between me and my beer
if they are good at parties they will get a taste.. controlled
but no one leaves any unattended.
good thing that dog isn't in springfield Ohio
Homemade turkey soup is a great Thanksgiving bonus.
cream of turkey soup.. I'd eat that
I don't like turkey much these days long story
If I had a bigger kitchen I would try more creamed soup. The process is long and kind of messy. And involves appliances I have to haul around due to the small kitchen.

10 left. I need a break
'morning, everyone
hi welki, how's it going?
very well, thanks! how about on your side of the screen?
all things considered, very well!
enjoyed a few thanksgivings this year :) one in canada, a community dinner on wednesday and a traditional dinner yesterday with four friends
luck bunny, you! Three thanksgivings. I am off to the west coast of the Island later today and a dinner like that awaits...
i prepared dressing, it had walnuts and cherries in it - was delish
hey that sounds great, I will try that. do you add it to a sage dressing?
<-- has lots to be thankful for, i needed three dinners :D
the stuffing - i use bell's seasoning, so yes there's some sage in it
sounds good except for the walnuts
i always check to see if there are dietary restrictions beforehand - for you, i'd make it without nuts
yeah.. going to the emergency room with your throat closing is no fun at all believe me
you keep an epipen handy?
I made stuffing with sausage in it one year. It was very good, I should try that again.
used to.. they're too expensive here in the US now. I am just really careful
agreed Molly re sausage stuffing -- at one end of turkey with the bread stuffing inside and as side dish. The leftovers are my faves though. Once cooked a turkey just for sandwiches.
an epipen is over 850 bucks here in the usa and it expires too quickly
That is obscene Ru
tell me about it..
they're a lot cheaper in Canada I hear
Does insurance cover it?
not really bichon
finally found all the d's
what a grid jeez
ru, d.i.l. says her insurance covers it

My mom has to have an injection every 8 weeks. Cost to her is $1040 with insurance.
Yikes, Bea
Big Pharma is criminal.
i rest my case.. my cost is $859 with insurance and they expire in about a year or so
my mom just got a botox injection in her hand (was drawing in from the stroke) and she had to pay over $1100 for an ambulance to take her across the street from her nursing home and they want her to come back for a follow up.
oy vey
that's insane hokes
I had botox injections to stop my head from shaking
Why can't they come to her? That's ridiculous.
I'm thinking about Bourbon injections later today
well, we finally got her on medicaid after all the money was gone so at least the next trip will be paid for. what's also crazy is the ambulance service is in another city.
a person at the facility couldn't wheel her across the street?
that's what I was saying, bea. I mentioned that to my friend who is a PT in hospital setting and she says "because they're specialists, they don't do that." Yes, but why wouldn't they? Surely there is more than one patient that needs a specialist in a nursing home.
well, it is a busy four-lane road and fairly hilly, ruru, so no. and one of us had to meet her there to go to the appt. my one brother volunteered.
I'm guessing your mother can no longer walk much?
not at all
oh sorry for her then.. I get it.
shit I'd drive out there and do it for $1,000 and save her money :D
ha
I mean, we'd do it if we could get her in a car seat and back out.
okay bea, what is my last upper A?
How old is she hokes?
just turned 81
I only have six of those.
I was stuck on 6 and then found a group of 4

you too, ruru
well, the M is a real mystery. still need 10 on the left.
How was your turkey, Carla?
it was pretty good. I don't know where the dressing went wrong though. it had a weird taste. I used TJ's gluten free stuffing but only about half the seasoning, so maybe that was it.
did your oven go out yesterday or already was not working?
It was not working last week when I went to bake something.
Mr. Bea doesn't like to call repair men. Thus no oven for TDay.
ah, so did you get a turkey from somewhere?
I was only going to do a turkey breast as we won't eat the entire turkey. I fixed it in the crock pot. It was moist and tender.
yeah, my mom always did that. we always joked that my mom made an entire thanksgiving with a toaster oven, crock pot, and one working stove eye.
her house had a tiny 50s oven and so she couldn't find a new one to fit. she eventually got a range but went without a real oven for many years.
I didn't have any stove for almost a year after we moved here. Crock pot, electric roaster, electric skillet and microwave was all I had.
I would rather just do a crock pot turkey breast but couldn't find those when I was looking.
bea, did you have any of your daughters/families come?
Daughter from Raleigh came with our two grandsons and her SO.
wait, am I forgetting you have a daughter in raleigh? I thought they were all in KS or somewhere.
Mr. Bea's youngest daughter.
ah
well, I am maxed out on words right now. 37 left for later or never. 5-11-9-7-4-1 M10 M4 O R3 U T D5 L5 S4 S W T
Outsew is not a word? I'm sure if there were a competition, Carla could outsew me.
heidy ho good neighbors
lucky me, caught an am7 clue as the chat scrolled by
woot, found an 8!
i think some people can outsw5 other people too

I did try outsew this morning
if only that was a word eh?
do7 is do + pee
thanks. was thinking it was the state of looking like a sourpuss, but no, it's a horse disease.
Decided to go the the theatre with the grandsons. Moana 2 was the chosen movie. Sold out.
Amazing. It got terrible reviews.
I've never let a bad review keep me from seeing a movie.
thanks bea
am7 please?
A Real Pain unexpectedly good. Jesse Eisenberg as one of a pair of cousins doing the heritage tour of Poland and looking for the house where their grandmother had lived. The cousins have a complex relationship.
I did NOT want to line up and see Wicked.
A Real Pain is a title with several meanings. Part of the tour was concentration camp, and how they tried to derive meaning out of a tourist excursion
I can usually tell from the previews whether there is something I am interested in...but they give away the whole movie. There is a Nicole Kidman movie that seems to be about BDSM relationship- not on my list. I don't know what to see on Jewish Christmas--slim pickings this year.

Kaplan are you okay?
nm
Same here Kap?
These M are killing me.
I still need 8 + 4 M's
Yeah, I'm OK. funny you asked. Went to an endless memorial tribute for a kid of 30 who OD'd. There was no structure to it and people told stories- but the thing was that no one could really talk about his addiction and most of his friends there were troubled. Everyone was reminiscing and his mother, a painter whose husband died of ALS 10 years ago , also a renowned painter...there was something strange about this memorial . I felt more angry than sad, and I think I was holding feelings that everyone was pushing away. Anger that no one could mention his addiction as a consequence of grief. It was very complex as I have known all these people for years and years. Our kids were in daycare together. The after-party was just that- a party with plenty to drink. It was very raspy, no offense to anyone. I longed for the comfort of a shiva. The good thin about some religions is that there are rituals around death so people know what to do. I didn't know what to do here. Sorry if I'm not making sense. It was just me and my husband for Thanksgiving...my oldest daughter is hugely pregnant with grandchild #2, and our other daughter is wonderful but needs a lot more structure to feel grounded. She's in Italy now.
I didn't mean raspy, I meant Waspy.
Hugs and love. May you be comforted.
I know that is a slur too, but I have been to Jewish , Moslem and Catholic mourning and there is an order to it. This was weird. And my daughter got unintentionally drunk because people kept refilling her glass.
I did an eval of the kid who died about 10 years ago because he had a DUI- it was right after his father died so horribly. I knew he wasn't doing well. I tried to talk to his mother about it, but she is an Artist, and has this persona of being clueless. Enough to never pay me for doing the substance abuse evaluation...that's petty, but was meaningful. I'm an artist too but I am not Professional- I sell occasionally. This was a whole building full of artists and they are very competitive. Art came first, children second. There were four "only children" in the building who made their own family.
Im dumping a lot of stuff. Sorry.
don't worry if it doesn't make sense.
Kaplan, you can tell us. We're here for you. Hugs and love from me, too.
thanks for asking and for the comfort
I'm tired of young people dying, and knowing that under Trump 2.0 owe will not get the services we need for Harm Reduction. WHY did he win again?
Americans as a society, perhaps because of our English, German, and Scandinavian roots, are notoriously bad at dealing with death. Waspy, stiff upper lip, don't air your dirty laundry, etc. It's a problem that adds to depression, in my opinion.
And yes, there's not enough to stem the desire for oblivion via drugs, let alone the access to powerful, destructive drugs.
the "why" seems to be a combination of people *feeling* that trump was validating their *feelings* while not knowing much about anything else, such as the fact that anything he might SAY to make working class people feel validated in their feeling that life is too hard and too expensive is very unlikely to translate into policy that will actually improve life for those people, and really knowing like NOTHING else about him, or policy, or anything.
That is all true. It reminds me of Howard Stern's interviews with people about why they were voting for Obama. They literally knew nothing about him.
Kap, I'm so sorry you have this sadness with which to deal.
ie
These last 23 are so elusive.
Kap, just coming in, catching up on the chat. I empathize with you, particularly about the young man and his ensuing memorial. Similar to a relative of mine who struggled for years with depression, and who committed suicide. None of that mentioned. (gentle hugs across the internet).
dear hurshy, as always, I appreciate your insight. It sounds true.

thanks ch1212 - FYI, it's not really "my" insight - i was synthesizing the key takeway points i got from several different podcast guests (journalists, authors, professors) that Jon Stewart has had on his podcast the last few weeks. :)
80-90% of i everything i ever say on serious subjects is me drawing from other people
Me too, but it's still you who synthesizes the comments into your own coherent response. So please, take the compliment. :)
i take it, it's just, you know, footnoting, lol
