If they aren't posted at Babbler's Anon in the first 30 minutes, it means they'll be there about 6-8 hours later. The stats here on Babble itself are usually there within the first 5 minutes. But you may have to hit F5 to get them to come up if you were here before they were available.

No, i take that back. There are many many brilliant kids out there, but proper schooling is often lacking, and there are so many submental distractions too.
I didn't know Miy was 13 until she reveiled it. I was helping her with problems I helped college level football players with at Purdue!!!!! and worse yet, she understood the transitions!

I wouldn't want to be a kid in this time. There is expected so much from them, and yet I feel most are the wrong things... I am ever so grateful we managed to find a real good school for ours, a bit old fashioned about manners and what they teach, and young in methods and such.
There is a serious problem with how we educate the young here in USA. Unless you can afford to send your kids to the best schools, its pretty much home schooling along with public schooling. Thank gosh my dad kept giving me books with a science slant that got me excited.

nothing wrong with manners, I grew up with them, think kids need them instilled by their parents more often (biased). Miss (or Mrs.) so and so (first name only appropriate if they allow it), etc. etc. too many times these little things lead to not understanding authority.

Before the job change I offerred to bring her (MIY) over to the USA as an au pair (sp) for ScoutsMom and get a taste of the US, but she is in school 24/7. I couldn't do it reliably now, but, OMG, she is amazing.... I would expect to see her in the news before 20.
About those manners: I couldn't agree more! My kids address their teachers with Mr or Mrs. I know in english there is only 'you', but in Dutch we have different words. One for people you know very well, or what a grownup would use to talk to a kid, and one that expresses respect. I am just glad my kids are taught that respect doesn't hurt.
And, Miy feels things deeply. I hope she can hold onto her sense of her identity as time goes on.

Sprite, my Grandmother was french, which is where I learned what little I knew of the language and culture. She insisted on table settings, respectful greetings, but it was never an imposition, but a respect for those who were joining us. family settings weren't as formal, but just a different set of respectful customs...

That's just it. I strongly feel it is a gift to kids, to teach them manners and instill in them respect for other people AND themselves. I feel a lot of problems in our world are related to lack of respect.

I so agree mtn and Sprite. A sense of etiquette in general truly stands one in good stead socially, and all other ways. It's simply thinking of others, rather than being selfish.
MIY is very intuitive and thoughtful. She is one of the special ones that are sent to us every generation (and yes, I really mean that). She will do something special! I have listened to the music (miyavi) that she loves and I have to say, its very intricate (I played cello for 12 years and 2 years of music theory), just not something I would listen to regularly. Anyone who would take the time to translate lyrics to understand what the song says (japanese music vs. italian operas) is amazing at 13!

ettiquette and manners show that you respect your host, yourself and your family. My Grandmother and Mother always got ticked at me for peppering my food before I tasted it. Until I started cooking for my Mother's catering co. how rude it was to assume that the very rich and thought out dish in front of you tasted, before you seasoned it, was an insult to the cook, host and yourself.
My son is someone who has been 'different' from the very start. He feels things deeply and has his own way of reacting to everything around him. I want him to keep that unique individuality. But what mother would I be if I didn't teach him how to act like society wants? I want him to be able to be part of most social circles. And if he can, he can choose to be the odd one out whenever he wishes... but then it is his choice. I want him to have that freedom.
Ya, yoyo is pretty cool to talk to as well, but only met him twice. sold my cello to pay for my engineering degree.

Sprite, I have always been odd man out. I played football in highschool and college, but was a nerd. The best thing I learned from my folks was a sense of self. I may not have been the most popular, but I was the one people looked to, to accomplish the hard problems. I knew who I was. The best gift you can give your child is teaching them, that it ok to be them.

If anything I have differently in my childhood (child #11 of 12) would be to have parents that respected my space, but did wonderfully odd things, like show up to concerts or football games, but they had to work. I think that too much attention is as bad as too less

The most wonderful thing I learned from my parents was that if you treat someone as an adult and talk to them (from the beginning ) as such, they will ack like one. If you talk to them as less than on (or down to them) you will insult them and teach them that it is ok to do so. I have a cousin as old as I. My mother talks to all children, adults and the aged with the same voice, logic and concern. She is a wonderful person and my guide... (LOL... feeling mystical right now)

As long as Andrew Lloyd Webber didn't write the score, I'd like to see it.
There are 3, but non as good as the Andrew Llyod Webber adaptation for the stage. The Musical brings out the feeling that the movies lack, the musical draws the crowd in. I have not liked any of the movies done on it. But RENT the movie is worth seeing, over the top theatrics, but genuine.

thats cool, I live in Memphis, TN but grew up across the country from the Mojavi desert to Richland, VA, but spent most of my time in South Bend IN (home of Notre Dame University)... I miss snow... but not on a regular basis

mtnjock Spent all of my working life in the airline business (mostly for the wonderful, now gone PanAm) so was able to get to the states on a regular basis. Never made it to Memphis though.
thats cool about working for airlines, up until last week I worked for FedEx as a computer engineer. Airline companies are really taxing on their employees.
mtnjock They are but they gave me the opportunity to fly all over the world. Wouldn't have missed that for anything. Wonderful education for my son
same here, why I picked them over Martin Marrietta. A chance to fly anywhere and be useful. They stopped expanding and I had no reason to be there. But 11 years is a good run. I hope that you have found something fulfilling.
mtnjock I've now retired. So spend my days looking after my three year old granddaughter and her dog. She is an absolute joy and is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Frances, my mom crouches and knits, and sews, and caters food for Notre Dame, she is over 60, I am 36. I grew up appreciating the fact that family is more than the atomic on, but the one that one creates and grows on. I was raised for 3 years (blessed years) with my grand mother in the house. She taught me so much about how to be an adult. My mother carries on that tradition with spending so much time with her grand kids.
people laugh that she can crouche a baby blanket on a flight from memphis to SBN (South Bend National) let alone during 2 movies while bored... LOL... quilting is an art, my mom thinks of comfort. Difference, but still special for the time and effort put into it. I don't know what time it takes to make a quilt, but doing stain glass, we often refer to quilt designs for inspiration.
mtnjock My daughter in law is Swedish so Ellie, who is just three, is growing up bi-lingual. She is try to teach me Swedish. They are in Sweden now visiting other grandparents for Christmas and new year so I'm dog sitting.
but you are apart of the family unit. Most grand parents in the US are left out, and then put into homes for someone else to care about. It is sweet that your family wants you to be about of that childs life intricatly. My 70 father taught himself Calculus to help me while in college... I will never forget that.
mtnjock I design and make entirely by hand, silk quilts. Used to do it quite a lot on long haul flight when you could take scissors. A lot of people actually make quilts called stained glass
I have heard of that. Never seen those designs yet, but Darleen used to do stained glass and now does beads had mentioned that as well. I usually stick with the Frank Llyod Wright geodesic designs I grew up around. I would love to see some though...

mtnjock I just think that as I see Ellie for most of the year then it is no harship to miss maybe four weeks of the year when she is able to see her Swedish family. I like to think that I am helping her to grow up as a great person.

They really did. I was transfixed and wanted to buy them all. They are priced at £200 upwards, the most expensive being about £2,000 I think. Compared to other artists, they're quite reasonable. Seems we all like the same sort of things - I like sudoku too. Has anyone found Tsunami puzzles yet, you have to colour in squares to make pictures but have to work out which squares first and it's not always that easy.

pr4/6, for example, means the word begins with pr, is 4 letters long, and worth 6 points. If you click on Babblers Anon at the right, you can go to the stats, which list the words in the grid by the first two letters. If you copy this to notepad or some such thing, you can refer to it frequently. It's enormously helpful.

I use a program called Photoshop Elements - a cutdown version of a professional program... it lets you crop images, apply effects, change colours etc... hours of fun, in fact :D if you don't want to buy the software, computer magazines often have free discs, so you could just look for one with a photo editor program

Permanent lights, all you have to do is unplug each section of the tree (comes in 3 sections), pull the sections apart and put it in the box! -- lights stay on the branches ready for the next year.

It is the Jewish festival where we light the eight candles of the menorah. Tonight is the third candle (see Ren's icon). It's called the festival of miracles because back in biblical times a wee bit of lamp oil lasted eight nights. Chanukah is a minor holiday for us - not like Christmas is for you.

jojo - the jewish calendar is based on the lunar cycle rather than the solar so our holidays (and holy days) do not fall on the same day each year of the gregorian calendar. this year, it happened to coincide w/ the christmas holidays.

I grew up with Jewish neighbors, they were wonderful, I will remember them always. They are all probably gone by now. But, they are remembered in my heart. We were always invited to their Hanaka (sp?) but I never heard of Chanukah. But, best wishes for your holiday. Enjoy

I guess, now, by looking at all Chanukah, I guess as a child, I remembered it as Hanaka, but I guess it was misspelled. They always gave us kids Xmas gifts, and even hired us to do chores at their bakery in Seattle. I will always remember them, they all were such good, honest and loving people. tbear, my vet recommended having Malka's thyroid zapped with Iodine-131. It is a permanent cure for 99 percent of cats. Only the tumor tissue is destroyed, so in most cases no thyroid supplements are necessary. Malka is so sensitive to meds, I was pleased to find out about the tx.

jojo - don't be anxious - i'm the only one allowed to be anxious!!!! i think most of us get anxious when we visit our families espcially at holidays. i once spent a weekend at my in-laws - and it was a week to long...

Have spent a large chunk of my holiday feeding the street cats in the village where my mother lives...altho they are periodically chucked a bag of leftover paella poor things don't last long as they all have cat flu and ......whatever else. They are all dob tailed and a mixture of siamese and Heinz 57....the prettiest one I called The Lone Ranger,siamese with a chocolate covered eye mask...so sweet.

Oh how sweet and sad, tbear. I get very emotional around stray cats, or stray anything. I hope that this will go well for Malka. She is relatively young at 11 for hyperthyroidism, so it makes the decision to go for the expensive one-time tx easier to make.

Ren: I am not a obese older woman. I work out 3 days a week at our health club, and on the other 2 days (during the week) I walk briskly 1.5 miles in the AM. So, I am not a woman that is not active. I garden in the spring and summer and fall. My yard is beautiful. I just have high BP.
That is very good Jojo, all that activity. I do yoga, but I really should get out and walk, too. I am also highly anxious, but I hide it very very well. That's probably not healthy.
jojo - what do you have in your garden? herbs? roses?my mom and i have green thumbs. i love roses, and have herbs and wild iris from louisiana grwoing as well as strawberrys. i also havea pineapple tree i started from chopping off the top of a pinapple..i'll take a oicture and post it one day.

Babss1, Malka is my little tabby cat. The iodine-131 tx involves one injection and the cat does not become ill or suffer any adverse effects. I do believe, however, that she may glow for a few days. Hyperthyroidism in cats is very common and, unlike in people, indicates a tumor in the thyroid, non-malignant. I love to garden too, although I've never had a lot of space to do so. I love flowers and herbs.
