my grandmother was an avid knitter too and she had... oh dear, not sure of the word... catharacts? Got worse and worse and at last she could only knit socks, and my grandfather had to pick up the stitches for the heel.
I confounded them as my problem had never been encountered before. I had all sorts of foreign specialists poking, prodding and testing, all to no avail. It has been a lot better until about a month ago and now I will have to go back and see if Technology has caught up with me.

cataracts is the word, I think. I have lovely coloured lights that alter the colours I see. Orange can become a muddy brown and so on. In my left eye I have a curtain of blue that comes across about a third of my vision. I have pink swirls that become granular as they fade in both eyes and, at the moment, a bright pink 'doughnut'in the right eye with a lovely silver edge to it. They don't fade when I close my eyes so I have a lovely firework display to send me to sleep.
I suspect it is a brain problem.

They test for glaucoma when you get your eyes tested. It is a pressure problem. You can go blind if you leave that too long.

There is also wet and dry macular generation - I know about it all having been tested for everything over the past 25 years. (except that eaxtra chromosome :))

I don't know if she had any idea what it might be as she couldn't say. then there was the time that the technician at Moorfield put 10 x the correct dose of drops in and I couldn't focus for a week afterwards. They apologised very prettily.

our first cat got ill, but we had no idea what was wrong with her. she Cried strangely when she pooped and had some rectal bleeding etc. 3k later, they informed us that she had rectal cancer and added another 300 to put her down and put her ashes in a decorative box. still paying for that bill:( but we love our pets

Best for your cat, trif. If the leg isn't broken, maybe you can learn to do dressing changes? I did that with one of ours who got an abcess from a cat claw wound - handled the drain and the dressings and cut the bills a lot.
yes that is a great idea Helen, Trif. ask the vet if you can be taught to do the dressing changes, that is if you want to. if you do make sure you can demonstrate how to do it before you leave the vet
when my cat was so sick 10 years ago she needed subcutaneous IV fluids. I asked to learn. the tech demonstrated it and then wanted to send me on my way. I insisted that I be able to do it myself before I left the vet.
It's not so much the needle and the tube and the little valve - it's the holding the cat still!
my cat was too sick to care at first. as she got stronger she would not sit still
there are vet techs who will make house calls. Trif. you could ask if that is available. that may be less expensive

I didn't see her on last night, either -I wasn't on very long, but she's usually there the first hour after the flip.
There are also vets who will do at-home euthanasia - very much easier on the cat, and less expensive. But our most recent cat decided the time had come at 2 am, and house call was out of the question!

As I seldom write about the organic compounds of sandalwood, that won't work for me. : D
I try to avoid that in my writings. I take after hemingway or Jack London in my tales. Keep the basic story easy to follow, but flesh out the novel with such exquisite descriptives that the ready can almost feel what the people in the book are feeling. No need to hit them over the head with a dictionary:)
