My mother was gutted when she found out (doing the NY Times crossword) that etui wasn't pronounced et-oo-ee
i am known as the walking dictionary. i have a 2 volume copy of the macquarie dictionary, which is also a sort of encyclopaedia. plus my grandfather was a teacher and instilled in me a love of words, not just definitons, but their stems/roots. i am always looking up words.
lol I have a giant copy of the Webster's Encyclopaedic Dictionary (Canadian Edition) Darn thing weighs 10 pounds:)

It should be obvious to you if a housekeeper is not keeping your house clean. I would also think it's obvious if she is in the laundry room on the phone more than she is cleaning. I would suggest a day where you monitor what she is doing. Perhaps you have been overlooking her "slacker" behavior.

Well if all you want is someone to show up and build a fire, then I guess that is what it is. However, remember that you are paying her for her "duties" and if she is not doing what she asked, there is a problem.

Most people, whatever their job is, are not allowed to have personal calls on their cell phones while they are working.
well its not easy for one person to clean with a reno going on but my husband did it. I think you need to give her something to do where she is near you
We used to have a gardener who would spend half his time on the phone, but at least I could see him and stopped using him
well maybe you need to do that with the house cleaner you have now but then again with the reno what type of duites can she do?
Also, it is not that hard to build a fire. Maybe you can have someone teach you how so you are not dependent on her for that.
I'll get after her more on Thursday, when she's back, to get rid of some of the dust
