I'm surprised the roads were so great since the Feds closed down today.
only main roads are cleared. interstates were perfectly black and cleared. but how do the people in homes get out if their roads arent plowed.........
my question is: why do they make the main roads so perfect and leave the others unplowed? we saw two plow trucks going along a main road clearing about 6 inches more to the sides, which was not needed at all while the side roads are unplowed. it is ridiculous.
I think the point of now plowing the residential areas is to force people to stay home so they can get the roads clear. They can't clear the roads with people driving around on them.

Yes, the snowplows must start with main roads first so the residential roads are done last. Even here in the Buffalo area, where fighting snow is done professionally, the residential streets in the city are plowed last.
i get that but still it is crazy. in philly and NY all roads are plowed already.
It depends on the snowfall and the number of plows.
The DC area does not keep the same number of snow plows on hand and ready as New York and Philadelphia do. We don't get as much snow as the folks up north. It would be an unnecessary tax burden.
Also, residential communities get plowed out by private contractors (paid for by your home owners association) not public plows.
molly, the fact that the plows can go down seven locks road clearing six inches more of the shoulders makes me crazy when my street is totally unplowed. it is partly the weird thinking here that is so bad.if the plows on seven locks had instead gone down my street instead we would be plowed.
we dont have home owners associations in my area. we are covered by public plows.

The plowing agenda is to clear the path to hospitals and fire houses first, then clear main roads, then residential areas. If your area is plowed by the local government, your residential area is low on the list. There is nowhere to go anyway, everything is closed.

All the reports I have seen say that there is not much "fresh food" at the grocery stores. The trucks have not been in for delivery in days. A massive storm like this slows things down and people have to work within the confines of it.

Ugh! Naïve west coaster question: Do you have to use chains in those conditions? We have to use them here in the snow, but it only snows in the mountains.
no chain requirements here - we're in flatland. I know some cops that have them
for us, unlike midwest/great lakes, we generally just have to push the snow off the roads and wait a few days for the sun to do its work
it doesn't stay below freezing for long stretches
but with this depth of snow, it will be a while

chains will only get you so far - if the snow is very deep, you're not going anywhere. they're great for traction and help you stop, but deep snow, everyone gets stuck
When there is a really big snow storm in the Sierras they just shut down the highways. But the snow plows do a really good job normally and you just have to use chains
here, lots of people put on winter tires in october. (i do, too) they're different than snow tires and remain supple in sub-zero temperatures
Not that we get much snow here any more :-(
that said, there's no substitute for common sense and caution in bad winter weather
I have a new Subaru Forester with 4WD. That will probably get me through most of the Sierra conditions.
i've driven 4x4 or awd vehicles for decades, so i know their limitations. nothing is great on ice.
Of course, I don't have to commute in it. That would be just a pleasure trip.
i have great tires and awd on my current vehicle. i'm comfortable driving in bad weather, but am nervous about other drivers, the ones who drive on baloney skins or think 4x4 makes you invincible
the forester is a terrific vehicle - i've had a couple of subarus in the past and would feel safe in one. i think scrabbler has either a forester or an outback

a couple of weeks ago, we were driving north towards edmonton and saw that the semi-trailers were slowing down. we did, too. the folks who passed us ended up in the ditch
4x4 or awd invincibility is endemic here - people drive like they're the most important person on the road in good weather :-(

and then they don't understand how they end up in a skid or in the ditch
there is skill involved with driving in bad weather - braking is where lots of people get into trouble
My commute never involves snow. Very occasionally slightly icy roads. I swear everyone around here has a psychotic break when they get behind the wheel though
i saw video of a local accident where someone hit a patch of black ice, braked, over-corrected and ended up taking out a semi and two other vehicles. ice is scary, very scary

ohhh, careful - depending on what kind of car you have, you might want to gently accelerate, like a front wheel drive car - to pull you out of a skid. but it takes finesse and experience.
best way to learn is the same way to get into carnegie hall - practice, practice, practice :)
Turning the steering wheel in the direction the rear wheels are skidding just seems wrong until you get the hang of it.

i just read about them - they're starting to pop up in canada, but none here yet. and they're geared towards the occasional exerciser and are supposedly 'without judgment'
there's a good life fitness place within walking distance - they're always filled up, and by filled up, i mean with gorgeous, muscular bodies - definitely not me :D
Planet Fitness has all types ... lots of non-gorgeous types and a few hard bodies. It actually is very non-judgmental.
My pudgy body is welcome there ;D
