Tuna quiche x 2 and a flourless orange cake - sadly for what I suppose is the equivalent of a wake. Friend died yesterday, funeral on Wednesday then everyone is getting together at the temple.
That's wonderful. I knew the presents would be loved.

Well, my husband was Canadian and he said that Canadians are lukewarm about American football and much more into hockey
this Super Bowl was given to them because of the buzz about their qb supposedly retiring

we have had a Canadian football league for years -- don't watch it though - of course, our season is much shorter than yours.

how did they survive? clothing! they dressed in many layers in winter. my grandmother dressed like this: first a sleeveless pink cotton undershirt. it hung to her legs. then a corsette that went from just under her breasts over her hips. that required laces which had to be tightened every day. i helped her. then a bra. then underpants on top of the corsette. then a pair of, oh i forgot what it was called: cotton pants that went from her waist to her knees. then a shirt like a t shirt with long sleeves. then a full slip. and then a dress and a sweater. oh and i forgot: stockings! stockings that hooked to the garters hanging from the corsette. and the stockings were not like what we wear. they were thick cotton stockings. and then a sweater and she was ready for a cold day. she dressed while she was still in bed, under her "bet gevant". that was a huge feather bed thing which her mother made for her for her wedding. she had it to the day she died and i wish i knew what happened to it. i am sure it was tossed. too bad. i often slept with her in her double bed under that bet gevant and it was so so so warm. so so incredibly warm.

HAPPY ENDING to the pelican story! The poor thing had a fishing lure hanging from its wing and the fishing line snagged on our dock when it went into the water, so.. a volunteer from the Wildlife Center and I were able to net the bird, wrap it in a towel.. and it is now on its way to the vet. Ahh, relief.

The volunteer showed me how to hold pelican bills so that they don't bite you.. pelicans breathe through their bills, so you have to leave space by putting two of your fingers in the middle.. poor thing was shaking
but very grateful once it was done, I bet
good news is that we don't think the wing is broken. Once the lure is removed and antibiotics are used, the bird should be ok.. nasty tear by the wing joint though.

what recipe did u finally take to the party yesterday? did it work out?
i took the bars but without the top crust. the crescent dough had a big hole coming out of the package and i tried a second time but it kept ripping
i'm sure that everyone still enjoyed them
they did! they were a big hit. just that they cost a lot with all waste.
that's too bad
i wish i had kept more than two home.
i added a bit of lemon juice to the cheese custard. i think cheese always needs lemon
they sound good
i bake a lot, but the easy shortcut stuff rarely turns out well. i will call pillsbury to see if they have any advice.

missed it yesterday but just went and checked it out - they look delicious
the pillsbury recipe uses 1 c sugar but i used 1/2. it was fine. it also has different directions than the link i gave yesterday
i know the babbler lil bit posted this recipe years ago.
with so few ingredients, it seems relatively simple - but that it if you can get the dough to work out
saw a new product yesterday. crescent, puff pastry and poa dough in the refrigerated casem in rolls, not in cans. will definitely get the puff pastry to work with apples and pears, cheaper than the frozen.

yes we do - and the most amazing features, called hoodoos
mountains, prairies, desert - just missing the ocean and deciduous forests
and the most beautiful drive throught the heart of the Rocky Mountains between Banff and Jasper.
googled hoodoos ... looks a lot like Utah. Beautiful.
my dear friend just took a train trip that ended up in Banff. She liked it a lot.

I am much more of a forest person, but the big benefit of camping out in the deserts of CA is that you are totally disconnected ... BLM land ... no connections (even cell phone mostly). You just rest, read, drink, eat, play scrabble.
scrabbler has a forest spirit, too - and she lives in the adirondacks, a perfect place for her
