My father used have koi karp many years ago now and they got to a huge size. Alas he had to leave them behind as he had no way of getting them to the island.
You could put your hand in with the food and they would take it out of your hand with a big slurp. i thought that was great!
aaah. Koi are much fancier and bigger, but these are very pretty and somehow (perhaps eggs in the plants?) have introduced back ones. So they are all mixed and every year there are many babies
I think koi are smarter than ordinary little goldfish and also more sociable but once the season gets underway, they emerge whenever someone comes near
I know my father used to have a seperate part for the babies and have a netting across so the other fish could not eat them. Then he would put them into the main pond when they were large enough.
Yes they are, Ruby. If you put your hand into the water they would swim right into the hand and you could lift them out of the water...look at them then put them back again. They would seem to be happy with that.
I think they eat whatever babies are born in the winter, Under the ice. They control the population that way, I think

im not so sure, judi. we get so many terror threats, its not even worth keeping them quiet. and metro is under so much scritiny, if that came out, theyd be in even more crap than they are now. i think, honestly, the system is such a mess, they probably realized there were a LOT of issues going on, and finally decided to do the right thing by shutting it down to take care of some things. my only real criticism is that (unless there was a truly immediate risk looming) they could have given folks a little more notice to plan ahead.

ooh, now there's a topic! We have lost maybe half of the grove to "citrus greening".. and I can tell almost all of the trees are infected to some extent.. BUT.. I can't help but marvel at how many blossoms are appearing and how many limbs are still pliable. Amazing.. it is like the trees are trying their best to survive, so we keep doing whatever we can. I know it is a losing battle, and my husband asked me why I was working so hard clearing under trees that were obviously in bad shape. My answer: "so they can die in dignity".. no more argument from him. We had a small harvest this year, but hey, we had a harvest.. we shall see what the next growing season brings. Meanwhile, I enjoy the aroma of the many many blossoms..

ty, Byz.. so are we. Our neighbors gave up and are now raising cattle.. they love it! The cattle graze the former orchard so Rick doesn't have to mow.. a "cow handler" takes care of almost everything.. they just provide the grazing land for "grass-raised beef" that commands a premium on the market.. they are glad to be rid of the orchard
