WOW! I have a hard enough time with just English! (I never had a chance to learn a different language when I was young; & now it's much harder to learn as we age
I lived in Germany for 8 years, so there wasn't much of a choice, had to learn it. Most people will say they can speak English but with most it's hard to maintain a conversation
I once had to learn basic Catalan because I lived in Barcelona for a couple of months and a member of my team refused to speak in Spanish or English :D
I live in Minnesota and grew up in the northwest corner of the state. There were old timers that spoke French Canadian, Some that spoke Swedish, and that was about it.It was a very small community (and also a very poor one), so I never had any exposure to any other language.

exposure can also go bad. our kid was born in Germany, was exposed to 7 languages in the Spielgruppe and got all mixed up by 3 :D

yup, Catalan is very different from Portuguese and not origin in Spanish . Some words have a resemblance of French

Kid was not learning any language, the most he heard was Portuguese and German. But then the other moms in the international Spielgruppe didn't know enough German so I was doing the translation between the teacher and them. There were a Spanish mom, Brazilian , italian, one greek ... :D

I have some friends who are from Iran, their kids are learning Perssian and also Spanish. My grandson has picked up some Spanish & Japanese and also some Hmong from school mates; and he's only in 1st grade!
yeah, kid's brain plasticity is great for languages the firrst years.
They didn't even offer Spanish or any other language in my small school...
our kid wanted to learn english when he was 3 but we kept postponing it because of his difficulties with portuguese. so the little guy started to teach himself using youtube videos :D I had to "make" the school allow him in english classes because he was learning it anyways, so better with a teacher's guidance
