I thought I was doing better, Nef, but worryingly the inflammation reappeared this evening while sitting on the sofa working on lesson plans. I was a little late on the meds, but it shouldn't have been that bad. So will see if it diminishes enough overnight to do a trial run at school with Tom tomorrow. I get 4 allergy shots every week. The shots are so worth it!
Nef, the allergy testing will not show the culprit. It is a chemical reaction that they will not be prepared to test for in the allergist's office. I cannot justify the time out of school for something that I know will be ineffective.
(I've had the allergy shots weekly for 5 years; done with them now; but I know what I'm allergic to too.

That has been suggested -- the copier and the laminator are both in the staff room. Also, I know I react like this to some common household chemicals used in laundry, cleansing and body products.
Do you wear a mask in the staff room?
talk to the janitor then and see if they can clean the staff room with the same stuff they clean your room with..
Whatever it is, I was fine using the copier and the laminator in August. I was fine with the chemicals in the school last year. I think it's either just hyper-sensitivity since the reaction in June, or a new person in the building. I am really hoping it's that simple.
It's a contact allergy, M9, the stuff in the air lands on my skin.

stid, I use vinegar for cleaning at home. If it's a perfume someone is wearing; you can put up signs asking that co-workers & students don't use fragrances
Oohhhh. Well that's not good! Would a new person leave enough stuff about in the air to do that? Wow.
could it have to do with the rug cleaners? they don't clean them every day but use some very strong stuff
People should just be more careful about fragrances in general I think.
No go, Nef -- the community is too poor and too conventional for that to fly. I can ask colleagues to be sensitive, but not the students or their families. (Rugs were cleaned in July, the once-a-year deal). It's not fragrances, per se -- it's the chemicals like detergents that get me.
Fragrances used to set me off. I had other co-workers who also had problems with them; & we just had signs up about it.
People think I cannot stand "smells" -- when in fact I LOVE things like patchouli and such. But the chemicals are bad news. So I can smell a scent and be fine, and not smell anything and not be fine.
I still think you should talk to the janitor. I know they spot cleaned throughout the year, up here at least and it was the janitor who told me how strong it was.
I'll talk to my admin once I have enough information. Experience tells me this is a multi-month trek.

Well, I still can't tolerate PineSol & DH forgot & went & bought a half gallon of the dang stuff several years ago. HE never uses it; he bought it for "ME" I guess. :-/ (I gave it to my daughter as a gift when she bought her house last year.)
It actually looks a lot like rosacea... my face swells, there is erythema and edema, and if I am exposed long enough my whole body starts to swell. It's painful like a sunburn, and after a while the skin peels. I had my first epipen shot this past week... Actually not as bad as I had thought. I learned that I can use if for this, too -- not just the regular anaphylaxis.
I don't like PineSol just from the association -- they used it in the elementary school when I was a kid!
They used patch tests for contact dermatitis in Polish children, and came up with a list of things..maybe you could just get tested for what's on the list? I had no idea nickel sulfite was such a big culprit.

m9, that sounds really interesting. I'm very sensitive to aluminum (& many other metals) & I have to read lapels for every deodorant & detergent. Right now I found a crystal deodorant ; it was the ONLY one on the market when I ran out this last time.
VERY interesting study. I know I do not tolerate copper or gold. Since the fire, there are additional sensitivities. :-(

Unfortunately,it does seem as though the older you get, the more things you're sensitive to.
not in the last three months -- decided it was not something I could do after the reaction in June. Will go back to it when it is safe. Always handle those items with gloves and with a vent on.
