the word list Lickety posted just before the flip was from 2 days ago....same as was posted night. I think Lickety is automated and something is out of sync.
no wonder I was unable to refresh the list and get a good list. argh
t's are: ta 4, 4, 5 th 4, 4, 5, 7 ti 4, 4, 5, 6, 4, 4, 5
I refreshed and got the right list ..

I just checked, and it is the 141 word list
I just checked....my list says 131 words and that was the grid from 2 days ago....and I didn't just refresh. I had Babble shut down completely. Very strange

Kidsit - babysitting 10 year olds.
:D am adding it. Hiya matty, how are you today?
I'm alright - it's bright and sunny - we had a spring clean and laid some rugs we'd bought from Ikea yesterday so feeling slightly self satisfied ;)
ah good! A great time to make the home more cosy.
How are you doing this Monday morning?
pretty ok. Some worries but otherwise good.
What's up? Can I help?
money worries, so am afraid not... thanks for offering though :) It helps to know people wish you well, doesn't it.
Aww, that sucks, I've been there. Sorry to hear.
thank you :) I try to keep that inner faith that things will work out.
Over halfway and I'm still missing a bunch of letters :(
for some reason this grid is flying for me. Can I help?
fireflies
As often, it's vowels that are causing me problems. I am still missing the lone A in the left column, the I and the O in the right column and the D in the middle column, fourth row :( Stats would be great for some, if that doesn't make me too wimpy/thick/dull :)
never. Never wimpy or any of the rest, I mean
ap5/20 for the lone A
Thank you!! That is that A covered ;)
in7/36 for the i in the right column.
the O is og4/6 and oh4/6
Oh lordy, I should have seen those Os. Serves me right for getting help half an hour after I start the grid
and the lower D is dh5/14 - 6/24 combo and di5/14
babble blindness. Strikes all of us at some point.
That DH, on the other hand, I see relatively seldom, so would have missed that without stats.
yeah that is a babblet
Found all your clues bar the I at the moment - thank you!
Without clueing it yet, can you tell me if the i is a word I've heard of??
Never mind. Found it
And yes, I do use it (not frequently grant you, but I do)
nbt/nbs
I never use it. I'd say bland. But that is because I am a foreigner.
wtg matty!
The Dutch speak English better, often, than the English and Americans do.
added the dh words to my list of babblets at the bottom of my profile
I got the gh word, but then, having visited many a curry house, I would.
*giggles* I don't know about that, but I do have an English native speaker friend who always asks me to proofread her papers. She says my spelling is better than hers, lol.
yeah :) the Gh and dhal and naan never give me trouble either.
cooee and g'day from me. {{hugs}} dear sprite, and xoxox matty
btw sprite medusa sends her love to you.
Yes! And where I used to live was chock full of Indian restaurants - you couldn't spit without hitting one
awwww there is rose... and I am already done :( Hello my dearest friend. *hugs* How are you today? Tomorrow infusion time?
aw that is lovely, rose. Please tell her *hugs* from me and I hope she is well.
tomorrow infusion time.. *sigh*
Good morning Rose
why the sigh? I think it is wonderful it comes in time this time around.
she is still waiting for her reversal appointment.
I shall leave you guys to catch up and think about showering. If I don't see you later, have a great day!
poor medusa :(
So much gratitude! What's alive in you?
matty, we love to have you with us!
lickety ???
hiya lickety. That went way over my head, I am afraid.
Just passing by, have a great day everyone, bye for now
lol. Bye Lickety. *hugs*
Bye the way - I'm being completely positive with my comment - Just sharing love across the globe to you all
nice lickety mate. nice to 'see' you
lickety, we are eternally grateful to you for supplying the clue list every day. Here's some love in return. You know I am always willing to help you adjust the package, remember?
so, rose... why the sigh over the infusion tomorrow?
sprite, i am fed up at the moment. fed up with being dependent on all this stuff. fed up with my temp sky-rocketing, and having to explain why on a cold, wet, windy day i have perspiration running down my face.
*holds rose* My darling girl. I get it. I totally do.
thanx honey. i know i'll be okay by tomorrow night. i think is all part of the big picture.
so what are you doing today? anything fun?
I was thinking the same thing. I am so glad the infusion is tomorrow, so that you won't have to suffer for weeks on end.
tomorrow night you will be cruising again, feeling on top of the world. At least we can be grateful that there is a cure to the problem and it is starting to work out. Lots of people our age have to depend on medication... ours is not the worst possibility.
i hear you honey.
and that thought is what keeps me so positive most of the time. there are so many people worse off than i am.
yes there are. But that does not negate your suffering. {{{{{rose}}}}}
or yours dearest. {{{{{ sprite }}}}}}}
:) I am ok, mostly.
yeah, yeah, tell it to the marines... loll
lolllll
did you talk to the Big Guy about my sleeping, btw?
every night darling. i pray for you every night.
I really appreciate that. It helped. I slept (drumroll) for 12 hours last night. Isn't that something?
oh wow!!! i cannot believe it. that is so great.
thanks, my dear friend. You totally rock.
and no horrid dreams either. I feel a lot better.
something is working... for that we give thanks. xoxox
:D
honey, I'd better get on with my scariest chore for today, calling the morgage bank. Will you hold me in your thoughts?
okay honey. take a few deep breaths, and a magnesium.
good idea. *hugs* and lots of love. I will think of you tomorrow.
thanx sweetie. hugs and lots of love back at you. xoxox
Hello! I've been sitting here freezing so I finally gave up and lit the fire.
Good morning all.
stogee
hello Sukee; that was an accidental portmanteau word for sukee and cigar
I typed it in anyway, just in case :)
haha
I'm not so hot today, got a bad sore throat, been 3 days now. And got no pain killers...
Does anything like tea with honey help?
I don't even have honey. Been drinking some tea.
How bout tea with sugar and rum or whisky?
and butter
I have some nasal spray too that seems to help, it has aloe in it.
No booze... I really have to get in some supplies for winter :)
The season shifted this weekend -- Wind brought a cold front through and the difference is dramatic. Frost on the cliffs above the house, but not yet in the garden

I did too :)
There is no accounting for what Enable will accept or not accept. It accepts French words not commonly used and will not accept words like bien and merci that are more commonly used. Such an oddball word list.
But we're probably rather odd, too, accumulatin enable's odds and ends
Agreed Ruby
The fireplace just started to give off some heat; it took an hour!

It is quite windy here. I'm thinking of taking a walk on the boardwalk today.
I'll join you. I grew up in Rocckaway and the boardwalk was the best. One night a week in the summer there were fireworks
On Tuesday night.

Hello magie! How are you doing today? Welcome to chop.
Hello torgone! How are you doing today? Welcome to grid
Heya Min!
Hi again; finally got time to sit down & finish (I hope)
15 left. It feels like 100.
Hiya Tor.
I have 27 left; I know what you mean, ore.
Hey Nef.
Hi, origami; how are you doing?
fighting off a cold. I leave for Missouri to see my long-lost niece on Monday, so am pampering myself. It's important to me. How you doing Nef?
Trying to prevent a cold also! :-) DH & the grandson both have one; I'm doing lots of hand washing, vitaminC & am ready with the zinc lozenges if I feel I'm getting it too
Long Lost niece? How'd she get lost?
When my sister died (my niece was 2 yo) they just disappeared. I found her recently on Facebook. 40 years later. She is my only remaining relative. I am soooo excited about seeing her.
WOW! No wonder this is important to you! How far away is she? Have you found out if she's married & has kid yet
((((Nefigami)))) ;-)
Hi stid; how are you?
She is in Missouri. A ways away. My air tickets are booked! She is married and has a couple of children. One of which is in college. It is hard for me to imagine my sister (who died at 27) has a grandchild that old. I can't tell you how excited I am.
Nefrigami :-)
I am tired. Gave up trying to plan special lessons for tomorrow. Will do a different style of timed test tomorrow, and no idea if it will work out!
Hey stid
Origami, I hope you have a lovely visit with your niece.
That sounds really exciting; I can't blame you for being anxious to meet her
(((Stid))) is it your allergic reactions that have made you so tired?
We are going to rock this visit! She seems like a lovely person. My sister Phyllis was the best of the bunch. She seems to take after her.
Was your sister older or younger than you, ore?
origami, (sorry, spellcheck is on)
Older. I had two older sisters. Phyllis was 10 years older than me and Sandra 15 years older. I was the baby.
(I hope you have pictures of your family; & I also hope that there is a family resemblance)
Wow, that's a big spread!
I will try to get one. I am the most unphotogenic person on the planet. My sister was beautiful. She was 5'11" and was a print ad model. My sisters had a different father so the age gap makes sense.
DH's parents were divorced when he was about 2; we tried to find his father a couple of times but kept running into brick walls looking for his father. When DH was 38, we finally found him; & the first time we met him it was so weird because he didn't look anything like I imagined him to look; but they both had the exact same weird way of rubbing their eyes!! (I'd always teased DH about his odd way of rubbing his eyes too!)
*grin* ikea is in the grid... LOL
Oh, okay. My mom died when I was 8; I have 4 siblings & we're within 7 years (the 1st 5 of us); then our dad remarried & we have 2 half siblings that are 12 & 14 years younger than me (but I'm also 2nd oldest)
hi all.
It is strange that people lose track of each other. I never questioned my mother about why they weren't in our lives. My mother was a strange force of nature. It is great that you found DH
LOL, stid! I didn't see that before!
Hi m9
hey m9
I'm the youngest of 9. (looks like we're talking about siblings :-) )
So now you know where the 9's come from!
HI M9.
*cannot count to 9* (like many of my students, apparently)
LOL! I've often wondered about that!
I'm just so excited about seeing her. My only living relative.
M9, I can't imagine a family that large. I envy you.
hey, stid, my grandson is now in 2nd grade & was trying to explain the "new math" to me. I think it's the weirdest way to do math & it sounds so confusing to me. He was in the top of his class last year; he loved working on math in his head & was even doing multiplication; but after his first timed math test he's now at the bottom of his class.
Combined conceptual understanding and algorithms, if not well taught and connected by the teacher, seem to confuse children more than teaching just one way or the other.
Your other sister had no kids either?
There's a 5 year gap between the older 6 and the younger 3.. it's more like having aunts and uncles than siblings in a way.
At least I think that is what is happening with the kids in our school. This is the third year of a significant number of kids not having basic skills as they enter our grade.
And then I have 4 children and there's an 18 year gap between oldest and youngest.
Combined conceptual understanding and algorithms? (I'm going to have to look that up I guess
She had a child who died in a motorcycle accident and another child I can't find. So maybe there is someone else out there I can connect to.
well, there are algorithms (the way you learned to "do" math by rules), and there are concepts like how numbers actually "work" that are technically independent of algorithms
mathematical notation is really rather an abstract thing...and too many teaching methods and manuals don't do a good job of connecting the algorithms to reality in a way that young people understand.
Wow, m9; my mom was 1 of 9 kids too, she was #4 and the oldest & youngest were 20 years apart. All but 1 of her siblings had 5 or 6 kids; the one that just had 1 child was the aunt who raised the 5 of us
or what m9 said... I am tired...
and so they get to where they don't even try to connect it.. it's just mumbo jumbo and they grasp at meaning...
You have a very large extended family then!
I guess that's why I can handle 10 people living in my house..LOL
So, I am a math person. I had to endure all sorts of "this will make children understand math" shit in the 60's. None of it did. The powers that be dragged me around to schools to demonstrate their hopeless lessons.
Hmmm.. should ask what you think of common core?
Yep, I think that there were 56 first cousins on my mother's side alone. And through facebook (like origami) I've virtually "met" some cousins on my dad's side of the family too that I never knew before
Yowza~
Still, I do think most kids by the age I teach are able to understand how place value works, and how the digit "1" in the tens column indicates TEN of something, not one. However this year, they do not know this at a level that allows them to calculate addition and subtraction with accuracy rates above 50%. Which means that we have to go back to the drawing board to un-teach their misunderstanding and re-teach what they really need to know. Which is that if 17 + 3 = 20, then 20 - 3 = 17 (and not the 27 that I am seeing on a regular basis!).
So tonight I was struggling with how to meet the needs of the kids who need that level of instruction and also meet the needs of the kids who are ready for grade level math. It's going to be an interesting year, math-wise.
well, "common core" has totally confused my grandson. He had to make a math grid to tell me what 6 + 7 equaled tonight; just this past summer he knew that inside out.
Oh, dear, stid. that will be tough
There is a normal "slump" in what was known as new information and skills are integrated -- if he doesn't regain the automaticity, Nef, in a couple weeks (at most) then you might want to ask the teacher what's going on.
Well, good luck Stid. The statistics on math anxiety and percentages of students needing remedial math after high school are pretty bad. And until they take the pressure off, it's not going to get any better.
"common core" is not the issue for your grandson -- you need to know the style of math (Singapore math? Math their way? SRA?) there are so many different curricula out there. And the specific strategies and algorithms may be articulated in different ways. Math is not as monolithic as people once portrayed it.
(6+7 & 5+8 are the 2 addition problems I've always had problems with. I loved math & still do, but for some reason those 2 addition problems always makes me pause before getting the answer
There are different teaching systems for math??? Oh my! I will indeed have to find out what type it is
THat's normal. 7's and 8's are issues for even very high functioning mathematicians
in addition AND multiplication.
I have that issue with multiplication -- 7s are my nemesis! I CAN, and DO, memorize them but I struggle each year again...
m9, I think it's just the 13 that bogs me down. I don't have problems with any others; just those 2 daaition problems.
I only remember that 7X8 is 56 by thinking of the sequence 5,6,7,8 LOL... unless I'm doing a lot of calculation.
I enjoyed some of Condrad Wolfram's talk on teaching problem solving rather than maths. I was particularly keen on the 4 steps of problem solving and I think he hit the nail on the head when he said we spend so much time on step 3 and that's the BORING part! :-)
well, down to 28 and have to get ready to sleep soon. Have a lovely week, all! Thanks for helping me think about the math... maybe I'll find a strategy for teaching these concepts in my dreams!
He has a TED talk, but the one I watched is a different one called "Stop Teaching Calculating, Start Learning Maths! - Conrad Wolfram"
That was a good talk -- I should listen to it again! *poof*
Good luck, stid. Sleep well & I hope you're feeling better & more energised soon.
How old is your grandson Nef?
I've actually bought 2 hardbound books on Mathematics over the years because I've found it so fascinating. (yeah, I'm weird like that)
m9, he's 7 years old & in 2nd grade.
I just bought a really cool one (it's soft-bound) called You Can Count on Monsters.
LOL! That at least sounds like fun! :-D
I bought one titled Mathematics for the Millions & I can't remember the name of the other one. but will look it up for you
Gah.. I mean really..how often in his REAL life (not contrived math problems) does he have to add 6 and 7?? I don't keep things in my head that I don't NEED to use regularly.
Look.. you can buy it WITH shipping for less than 4 bucks! http://tinyurl.com/zeb4evv
Well, I can't tell you what the book is or who the authors are; my book cases are all out of order! (I'll have to work on that now too...)
No prob. Let me know if you remember! What was good about "Mathematics for the Millions"?
That look slike a fun book, m9; I may have to get it for him...
Oh hey!! If that kind of thing interests you.. I have really been enjoying a website! And that of course if FREE! It's betterexplained.com I think you'd really like it!
To me it made things easy to understand
Thanks!
And yes, get the book. It was worth it to me just for the conversation Gage and I had on the idea of infinite primes.
I probably will buy it then. Ronald is a very good reader too; so he will probably enjoy it also. (I read to him almost every night he sleeps over; I think his dad tries to read to him almost every night also.)
It's mostly pictures. Oh..have you heard of the Life of Fred books?
THey are spendy...
But they have almost a cult following, LOL.
tyvm was afk
No, I haven't heard of the Life of Fred books; it's a series, I take it?
Yes.
I have the first one and a later one.
They're by Stanley F. Schmidt
Hi maggie
here's a link to the math book I have m9: http://tinyurl.com/gktxehr
Heh heh.. I'd already looked it up.
:-)
I'm buying it from that same site that I linked to before.. less than 4 bucks with shipping! LOL
I hope you enjoy it. I remember interrupting my hubby & kids & reading them different quotes from it as I read it. Finally my hubby said that he really wished I'd enjoy that book by myself because he wasn't as enthusiastic about math as I was.
LOL!!
