We finally got some rain after the prolonged drought, so by the time my friends arrive in June, the shambly garden should be beautiul again

3:13 am

Right now there are tulips, allyssum, geraniums allium, wisteria, cherry quince,"sorbier" and other fruit tree blossoms and, soon iris buddleia and roses and maybe even water lilies

Hallo rubyfoo! I haven't played in a long time and it's nice to see the familiar faces here.

Oh, just seen how long a gap there is in the times of the messages.

6:05 am

Hi Sally and Ruby

Hi!

6:07 am

I haven't seen you here in a long time, Sally. Are you doing well?

It's taking time to get back into this after a long break.

6:08 am

I just finished reading, "H is for Hawk", so my head is in England right now.

I'm fine. It was just that i tended to use my ipad rather than my laptop and it wasn't so easy. Now I have a Bluetooth keyboard for it so I'm off!

6:09 am

A Bluetooth keyboard--wow.

My head is in England, but then so is the rest of me...

6:09 am

Haha. I loved that book so much. Have you read it?

It was very cheap but it's so much easier for proper typing. Also the grid doesn't vanish every time I add a word.

No, not read the book.

6:10 am

I am glad it works and that you are back.

:-)

6:11 am

The book is nonfiction and about a young woman that trains a goshawk as she deals with grief after her father dies. The writing is beautiful. She takes the hawk to the English countryside. I love nature and birds so I loved the book.

Who is the author?

6:13 am

Helen McDonald or MacDonald

I'll look it up.

Must check something. Be back soon. I'm not doing very well, I only have 27 words so far!

6:27 am

I have 63 and am stuck.

64 and stuck too Scrabb LOL LOL

6:30 am

Too many vowels.

6:31 am

Hello, scrabs. I read that book when it came out, but can't remember the name.

6:31 am

... the volcanic letters are there twelve times but the Sicilian mountain isn't ....

6:32 am

We all have our various ways of coping with grief

6:32 am

would rather drink a dry cider on a hot day -- not strongbow though as it tastes too much like beer

9:54 am

it was a nice grid for me...

9:54 am

still have 32 to go, so reserving judgement

9:54 am

i like hard cider but not beer...

9:54 am

i'd rather have a gin and tonic on a hot day

9:56 am

Here I am in the country of beer and wine and I only drink diet coke

9:56 am

we have quite a few micro brewers in our valley making hard cider now -- some of them very much like the Normandy ciders

9:57 am

i like pear ciders too

9:57 am

eric bordelet's are the best

9:58 am

will have to try it if I ever get to CA again -- like pear cider, but it is quite a bit sweeter than the apple usually

9:58 am

this one isn't sweek

9:58 am

sweet

9:58 am

it's from 300 year old trees

9:59 am

ok -- didn't know pear trees grow to be that old - wonder if the fruit has a more concentrated flavour?

10:00 am

I Do know that pear wood makes a wonderful sounding violin

10:00 am

it tastes like a white burgundy

10:00 am

it's pretty incredible stuff

10:03 am

maybe it wil appear on our shelves -- after all -- trump wants to dump US wine in our market. We already have WA state apples being dumped here but Mr. Greed won't be happy until he has it all

10:05 am

I wonder if he realizes just how much animosity he is generating for the US around the world - doesn't he know that nobody like a "me first" person?

10:13 am

to be honest nan.. you guys could use better wine there

10:13 am

your taxes on wines in Canada is beyond obscene

10:15 am

the reds yes -- we don't have a warm enough climate for red grapes -- other than the vineyards down by the border -- but not the wihites. I have never found a CA white that I like -- they are mostly too thin and taste like battery acid

10:15 am

mind you I am not buying $75 bottles of wine either

10:16 am

true. but i figured that when you said battery acid

10:16 am

yes -- liquor and tobacco taxes are very high --- helps to pay for the medical costs

10:17 am

i am all for super high tobacco costs :D

10:18 am

to my mind a good table wine should not cost more than $15 per bottle

10:19 am

there are plenty that do just cost that nan.. you just have to know them.

10:19 am

A lot of the wine I really enjoy is under $20 for everyday

10:19 am

but now that I'm older my palate has changed too

10:19 am

Trump doesn't care what the world thinks

10:20 am

There's a sizable percentage of the US population that don't care either

10:20 am

I have a lot of expensive wine.. but mostly i'm just selling it off now.. they don't interest me on a day to day basis of having a nice glass with a meal

10:20 am

as far as trump goes we are in for four years of hell here

10:21 am

I don't think he cares what anyone thinks mool --- he has a nice little nepotic oligarchy going for himself

10:21 am

just hope he hasn't turned the US into a dictatorship by then, ru

10:21 am

that is somewhat of a concern nan

10:22 am

all that is missing on him is a tiny little orange mustache

10:22 am

<---heads to the list

10:23 am

I don't believe he'll be able to turn the US into a dictatorship

10:24 am

But I do believe that he's harmed some basics in the democratic process, including transparency, objectivity and truth

10:24 am

he's trying to bully everything else mool

10:24 am

14 to go

10:24 am

yes, but you can only bully if those who are being bullied believe he has power over them

10:25 am

mool --- that thinking scares me --- did you believe he could be elected?

10:25 am

I think initially there were a number of republicans who thought he did, but I think there are fewer today who are scared of him

10:25 am

No, I didn't believe he could be elected

10:25 am

I did.. there's a lot of anger in middle america

10:26 am

But were all wrong some times :)

10:26 am

we're = were

10:26 am

And Clinton was such an awful candidate too

10:26 am

that is true

10:26 am

I think that US citizens should be very mindful of their rights and freedoms in the current climate --- already the current government is trying to withdraw rights of women and minority groups

10:27 am

WE ARE MINDFUL -- omg it's so scary

10:27 am

women especially

10:27 am

glad to hear it une

10:28 am

10:29 am

2:42 pm

cept

2:49 pm

apologies. luckily not a word.

2:56 pm

cept if you use an apostrophe

2:56 pm

Cept if you talk in abbreviated text-speak. In which people don't bother to spell correctly or use capital letters

3:00 pm

Well English is an ever changing language, so I guess if we wait a few years, cept will become ac-cept-able

3:07 pm

These days, English is an ever deteriorating language.

3:08 pm

he 7 driving me up a wall. Any help

3:10 pm

HE + consonant + brown from the sun + vowel.

3:16 pm

Did that help at all, Fit1?

3:18 pm

I think you'll find English has always been "deteriorating"

3:21 pm

I used to get annoyed at things like "mute point", until I started listening to some lexicographers talk about evolution in language

3:21 pm

miniscule for instance is a corruption of minuscule

3:26 pm

Still working on it Zoozoom

3:28 pm

got it zoozzoom. Thanks a bunch

3:28 pm

Anytime, Fit1, glad you got it!

4:55 pm

Time for me to retire for the evening. Happy babbling everyone!

5:17 pm

English has not been deteriorating as much as it has since the advent of text-speak and internet slang.

5:20 pm

But then I don't follow lexicographers. Nice 50 dollar word.

6:37 pm

Deteriorating by definition means it's becoming progressively worse. If you mean in terms of spoken language, I think you'll find that ever generation brings change to the language, both from a cultural perspective as well as a technical perspective

6:39 pm

hi all. any clues for the 7 or 8 letter words? i dont have any yet. ty.

6:39 pm

If you mean in terms of the written form, then I would agree there has been an acceleration in change because of the tools we use to communicate today

6:40 pm

As to it being worse...that's a harder thing to evaluate. If you don't like the change, then you can say yes I don't like it, but if you look at whether it's making it harder to communicate, I think that's less evident

6:40 pm

one 8 relates to whales

6:40 pm

the other 8 relates to a place you might get a drink

6:40 pm

compound word the second one

6:40 pm

dont know the whale word. what are stats? ty

6:44 pm

I have six of the 7s

6:44 pm

also missing the N word for N in first column. ty.

6:44 pm

ac7 adjective for something that is vinegary

6:44 pm

ne5/12 on that n

6:47 pm

then there's ou6/7 combo...also compound word

6:51 pm

6:52 pm

the se7 starts like a month and ends in consumed

6:52 pm

i have one se 5. is there only one? ty

6:52 pm

ty got se 7.

6:53 pm

wow. now have 6 of the 7s and ty very very much. keep going if you wish.

6:53 pm

that's all I have so far

6:53 pm

have 6 words to go

6:53 pm

I suspect the final 7s are a C and an S, but don't know for sure

6:54 pm

only half looking at the chat - do you both have ac7.32 & 7.36?

6:54 pm

ty for clues so far. going to do dishes again. ty

6:54 pm

oh, only the 36

6:55 pm

Now have both

6:55 pm

6:55 pm

6:55 pm

there is also a pe7.32

6:56 pm

okay

6:56 pm

wow what is vinegary sugar?

6:56 pm

a five headed sugar?

6:56 pm

i have pe 7.36.

6:56 pm

do you know what acid is in vinegar mkg? and do you know what sugars all end in?

6:57 pm

pe 7/32 is a sugar also I would guess, but imagine it with five molecules

6:57 pm

sorry but i dont recall this from high school chem. apologies.

6:57 pm

no worries...do you know any sugar names?

6:58 pm

malt***, gluc***, sucr***

6:58 pm

fruct***

6:58 pm

oh. ok

6:58 pm

both the 7s I didn't clue end in that ending

6:58 pm

tried pectose and not in dict.

6:59 pm

right, think five sided

6:59 pm

different prefix

6:59 pm

ty got it.

7:00 pm

Byeee

7:00 pm

yay!

7:00 pm

you are great cluers all. ty

7:00 pm

I just try to avoid cluing too directly as much as I can

7:00 pm

got the ac 7 also. ty.

7:00 pm

awesome!

hi guys, I'm new! Does anyone know why a letter I've used still shows "0/1" in the tile stats?

7:01 pm

off for now. ty

7:01 pm

probably used a different letter frob

only one on the board - the y

7:01 pm

It's uses the highest and leftest letter to start a word

7:02 pm

for instance the N appears three times

7:02 pm

so it might have used a different N

7:02 pm

It's a word that starts with Y

is it not the stats for using a letter in a word? but for starting a word?

7:02 pm

correct

ahhh

thanks!

7:03 pm

np. and welcome

7:03 pm

7:39 pm

Hi folks

7:45 pm

hi origami. just came back

7:46 pm

how did the interview go?

7:46 pm

How are you bugs?

7:46 pm

I am good. Really enjoying not have a regular routine.

7:47 pm

The interview was so-so. Parts went really well. We shall see :-)

7:48 pm

I hope it would be something you would enjoy. The interview sounded like it would be gruelling.

7:49 pm

It was grueling. I felt like I had fought ten rounds by the time I was done. It actually ran over to 5 hours. blech.

7:49 pm

I'm sorry if it's a no-no to talk about other things, but I thought babblers would know, being puzzlers. Is the BBC's Sherlock Holmes worth diving into on Netflix?

7:50 pm

If the interview was that long, I would be concerned about how much they would expect me to suffer on the job.

7:51 pm

Hi Gadget. I never knew we couldn't talk about other things (except politics, sex and religion , of course). Some of the BBC Sherlock is quite interesting but there were a couple that were very odd and science=fictionish.

7:52 pm

I quite liked their Watson.

7:52 pm

It's not a no-no gadget.

7:52 pm

Yes, origami. Most of the time the people who come here are remarkably supportive.

8:01 pm

we just can't discuss Go Fund me things here nowadays

8:01 pm

Don't get me started ru :-)

8:01 pm

People like to talk about politics but I was taught, and believe it to be true, just don't. It gets people fired up.
