Hi Owl, bichon, all
hi bich. hi scrabs.
co6/36....clue please
co6.36ed twins?
ty lynxxx
Hm, conjoin does not work.
it has another n in it?
OK, I found the word you clued now.
scrabbler, i saw a tv program the other night and thought of you.
well I have learned yet another thing today TY
Tell me, Owl.
it was on the lifetime channel and titled "the boy without a brain".
hi, all
Did he have anencephaly?
hi welki
Hello welki
http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/boy\n-no-brain-stuns-doctors-9778554
hi welk.
hi welki!
no he had complications o f spina bifida and was born with only 2% brain matter. and he grew a brain!
I tried the link to that story, but it didn't find a page
I googled the topic, Bichon, as the link doesn't work.
did you knock out the \n ?
http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/boy\n-no-brain-stuns-doctors-9778554
I had a similar patient. The mother was encouraged to abort but refused. The baby was not expected to survive after birth. She had a massive cranium.
just worked for me
But she lived until she was about 12--smart girl, delightful, I adored her.
She died in her sleep about 2 years ago.
what a terrible decision that would be. in most cases the outcome, i suspect, would not have been so positive. but this little boy is remarkable.
Kudos to the parents
i don't know what made me watch, they often have quite lurid tales of people with awful deformities, etc, butI was flipping channels and the psychologist in me was intrigued
Neuroplasticity is amazing in kids in particular.
How would you deal with a pregnant woman who has learned her fetus has this condition?
Present the options, knowing the outcome for the child's neurodevelopment is uncertain.
It is a tough ethical dilemma. Just as with a fetus with Down syndrome. The vast majority are aborted but I would not do that.
I personally would, but fully understand why someone else wouldn't
In medical ethics we are supposed to present the options but not advise.
Of course. But people sue for wrongful birth
Hospitals have ethics committees to address controversial situations in medical care. e.g. removal of life support, refusal of medical care.
<-- would have loved to have had a career in biomedical ethics
Having a baby is a genetic lottery. I diagnosed an almost 4 year old with muscular dystrophy on Friday. That is a devastating diagnosis.
co 6/36, pls
welki, you should read about Arthur Caplan. I think he is at the Hastings Institute.
co6 = to unite
thanks, scrabs - googling
prefix + jo4
ty Scrabs
he's got one heckuva cv, scrabs - 'about face' is provocative
He is the master of medical ethics.
he was in residence at Uof P for years.
he must have a good sense of humor - guess you'd have to, in that field, or your head would explode
good morning, everyone
Hi Nan
I wonder what Caplan would say about the decision to dismiss anti-vaxxers from a medical practice.
has yours done that?
We just made that decision as are more and more pediatric practices nationwide.
excellent
itto
Immunizations are the most important health measure we do for our kids.
ISN'T that kind of needling the anti-vaxxers?
Multiple needles, Ruru!
any forum that is lead by Jenny McCarthy should give one enough warning
People that fear or don't understand science often don't believe in science.
i am at loose ends this AM Yoga class was cancelled - again! i look forward to this one to start the week
not that there hasn't been some hits and misses in science though scrabs
Science makes progress based on research and evidence.
I have 2 granddaughters who have not been vaccinated against anything because my d-i-l believes that the eldest developed asperger's syndrome as a result of a measles vaccination when she was 16 months old. I have given up on trying to convince her and our son otherwise and fear for the kids (now in their 20's) everytime an infectious disease starts to run rampant in their city.
Yikes, Nan. I do have many similar families. Fear/anxiety/denial overwhelm rational thought.
I read how they are predicting that autism and Asperger's numbers are going to increase substantially in the next twenty years
who are they?
(it was some recent medical news.. I don't remember the source now sorry) I just read it in the paper
it could be that a lot in the past hasn't been diagnosed? Seems like there's a lot of focus and attention to it nowadays
I definitely see a LOT more weird and quirky, truly autistic, kids than early in my career. I started out in 1988.
think that better diagnosis is the reason that of a lot of diseases and conditions appear to be on the upswing
the article said that autism rates increased by 30%
re vaccines, I'll never forget the young woman who lived in our neighborhood in Nashville when I was a little girl . . . she had polio and was in an iron lung :-(
I also blame all the garbage people consume in their daily diets
vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is a known cause. I suspect that fetal exposure to toxins and medications are causes too.
Une, my mother has told me about the annual summer quarantines due to polio outbreaks.
we are surrounded by chemicals.
i remember. i longed to swim in the wonderful salt water pool with waves and waterfall at palisades park. it was out of the question.
if that's the case nan it should be called Mcasburgers
I don't know about un-diagnosed autism. That is kind of hard to miss.
absolutely no public pools.
indeed, scrabs . . . fyi I have a pic of my mom and her brothers at Lake Michigan -- they were sent there for a portion of the summer because there were outbreaks in Louisiana
there are varying degrees of autism molly according to the article.
I'd look back an post it but it would break the chat
Yes, I am very familiar Ru. I have a son with learning disabilities in what they call the "autism spectrum".
oh
two of my nephews have aspergers and are slightly autistic.. but they're functioning pretty well
that is a big change in more recent times, realization that there are degrees of impairment.
My son is high functioning, mostly due to his early diagnosis and early exposure to special education.
yeah.. same with my eldest nephew
I agree that autism is easily diagnosed, but I think Aspergers went undiagnosed in children often in the past. Such children were too often labled as antisocial, daydreamers, difficult, tempermental, single minded....and on and on
indeed, nan
Kids with high functioning Asperger's were often misdiagnosed as ADD.
I'm a little ADD actually
adds to my charming personality :D
i sometimes wonder about that. we have so many competing stimuli now, is it ADD or just the tug of trying to multitask?
st8....clue please
Greetings, worldy Babblers!
it seems to be more active in me when I'm tired TO actually

in Dog we trust
Deaf cat insists that we play. If I don't indulge her, she starts nipping at my legs. Verbal admonishments are futile
aww ..
Plus I'm subjected to the high-pitched screech that is her version of a meow.
.
Now she's done with me. Off to eat.
hopefully she sleeps most of the time, judi

go harry go! down to 62 -- listless so far, but will need to list tonight when I come back to finish, I am sure.
gotta go make dinner - bbl
later harry
so, stid, is your house all done and are you enjoying it. Also, still teaching full time?
Yes, teaching third grade, Nancy -- just finished my third year in the same grade! The house is "lived in" but haven't quite "finished" yet. Life has a way of pulling one away from projects to deal with other things. I have a dog again (since February) and we are slowly civilizing him. Poor guy went through many fosters because no one knew how to actually teach him good manners.
How about you? Doing okay these days? I am so rarely on when most of my babble-friends are!
"accio" does NOT exist in the babble dictionary. Too bad. I would cast the "accio words" spell....
I admire you sticking with teaching. I taught elementary, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and then 5th for a total of 7 years. I do miss the old gang on babble, felt I knew people more than I do now, even though I am now retired and loving not getting up at 6 am every week day.
I guess I missed that you retired! Congrats! :-D I don't usually mind getting up at 5:30 or so, except in January. That is a very difficult month to wake up in! Another babblefriend at my physical school retired at the end of the year... I figure she'll babble more now.
Hope to see you online again soon. Have to head out. Be well, and good luck, all! *poof*
