So beautiful there on the coast
The north woods and western mountains of Maine are beautiful too. This is where I live.
I never got out that way.. We mostly stayed on the coast near Bar Harbor and Deer Harbor.. I loved the feel of the State.. didn't care for the tax structure though :D
You do, fuzzy? I visited Maine, and Acadia NP in Sept and fell in LOVE!
fuzzy and i worked together for a bit years ago....i used to work maybe 7 days a year up there....did it for 21 years....nice area....moose country...
Penquis lives in Maine as well. I love living here, couldn't imagine living anywhere else. When we drive south we marvel at the amount of traffic and how people who live on the I-95 corridor do it. We have a season pass to Acadia and spend time there before and after the crowds come and go.
penquis, you worked at our school and with my good friend Yvette.
off season is a nice time to go to Acadia....
Baxter State Park is nice, too, if you like hiking and mountain treks....
My husband needs to spend Tuesdays in Ellsworth and if the weather is nice he goes to Acadia and has a hike before coming home.

here where I live.. we never seem to have an off season anymore
We hiked all over ANP, biked 24 miles, and kayaked in several lakes and the creek. GREAT time.
off season is outside of june, july, and august for summer places....though september has gotten quite popular as a vacation time...
Off season is after Columbus day and until the end of May and on season is mid may until Columbus day.

We arrived the Thursday before Labor Day so that weekend was crazy busy. Our next visit will be the week after Labor Day.

As penquis says, Baxter State Park is well worth a visit as well. You need to be much more self sufficient there and to make reservations early. The number of people allowed in the park at any one time is limited.

We hiked the Beehive and then over to Gotham Mtn and Cadillac Cliffs. Amazing. That is where we met folks from Maine that live near Baxter.

The hike does have its scary moments. My husband had a hard time in a couple of spots.
Fuzzy, on the Friday and Saturday of Labor Day weekend cruise ships dropped off 4-5K people at Bar Harbor for a day visit. We stayed away from town.

On our drive from north of Boston we cut over to Rte 1 in Brunswick. We stopped for lunch at Bucksport and then walked around Castine, a beautiful coastal town recommended by Babbler nrkii.

My son went to Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. I fell in love with the area and would love to have a summer home in that area.
we spent a week in old orchard beach a couple years ago - it was fun and kitchy
