How many miles did you hike?
50 miles in 5 days, in Shenandoah National Park.

Many folks, especially the through-hikers do 20 -22 miles daily. I saw a through-hiker in Harpers Ferry, WV, where I stopped on my way home, that was planning on 43 miles that day, and it was 91 degrees.
That sounds more like running than hiking
For those folks every minute of sunlight, and good weather, means another foot farther.
i walk fast ~ 3 miles/hr, and i don't think i can maintain that pace for > 10 hrs
Their pace might be 4 mph on flat terrain.
Personally I prefer to savor my surroundings not rush past them, but to each their own

Yes. On the flat, smooth sections I picked up the pace at times. But I love nature and am a tree geek.
Me 2, love plant taxonomy and trees in particular.
i do that in NYC, no trees but lots of windows :)
Natasha, mostly there were oaks and hickories, and some areas had black cherry trees. Not many conifers.
Some shagbark hickories too.
Yes, I've hiked the Shenendoah, though only modest day hikes, nothing like what you did. My favorite place for tree-gazing so far has been the temperate rainforest in Olympic National Park in Washington State.
My #1 love is the Adirondack Mtns and I will go there in June, July, and Oct.
I keep passing through there on the way to Montreal (my son goes to McGill)... must plan a stop one time!
Where do you go in the Adirondacks?
This summer: Lake Placid (3 days of backpacking), Newcomb, and Minerva.
My neighbor's kid goes to McGill. I think he just graduated.
I've been (briefly) to Lake Placid but will look up the other 2, not familiar with them.
My son started there this past year, entered as a soph due to APs, will be done in 3 deus vult
Small towns on lakes so we leave our kayaks on the shore.
I must get ready now. I shop for my mother on Mondays then visit her. She will be 87 in a few weeks.

We love Harper's Ferry - the confluence of hte rivers. Have they rebuilt the burnt area?
