Thank you, hurshy!
DONE!
you're welcome sue
oh sue i have a question i have been needing to ask a real brit
And well done you!
Go on, then
so i know that the song changes from god save the king to god save the queen and vice versa when the monarch changes, and you'd have your barristers who've got silk being KC instead of QC, but, when the queen's mom was still living, if the queen was a king, would the queen mother still be called the queen mother, or would she have been called the king mother?
like is it about her having been the queen previously or more about who she is mother TO?
The Queen Mother was the first to carry that title, but I can’t imagine there being a king mother!
That's interesting - so I googled it and hi all.
Here's an answer
she was the FIRST? wow
The King's mother, if still alive (and if she was Queen as in a consort, not a regnant Queen like Queen Elizabeth) usually keeps the title Queen, but sometimes there are variations like Dowager Queen. Again, it's pretty flexible. Casually you get names like the "Queen Mum", which is what they called Queen Elizabeth's mother when she was alive. Officially the Queen Mum kept the title Queen (though, again, there is a difference between a consort Queen and a regnant Queen).
I think it was more about her being the mother of the queen than her having been a queen herself.
thanks liz
Wasn't her title queen as the wife of King George?
then it would be king mother, if anybody thought to call it that, but, they don't. they just say dowager queen or whatever.
yes she was a queen consort like you said liz
sue just means that the "queen" in queen mother represents the new queen and not the dowager queen
IF elizabeth were to die before philip then he could be the king father hahahahaha
😂
such funny things to think about
BTW congrats, Hurshy
thanks
(i had to think for a minute why you were congratulating me)
I got so caught up with your question that I didn't say congrats then.
well i also just finished the school year yesterday so
that's what i'm congratulating myself for
TY Dr. God and TY Lickety :) Hi all!
good morning all
qs quonquerred
found an 8! Hi spritey :)
wow, well done! And hi :)
It's so unusual, I have to remark... :D
*giggles* I know the feeling
*rattles rose's cage*
:D just a muggle... muddling along ;)
same here. Oops, PB
bah... that hardly counts... BUT sangria is needed if you aren't too busy to mix up a spiker ;)
*pours Kate a generous helping*
Oh tytyty ... I was going to venture out today and get some vino but had a horride sleepless night. The day was lost and I will be up until all hours now...
ugh, that sucks :(
frustrating.. I was yawning but just couldn't drop off... grrr
definitely not fun :(
*bares teeth and rattles back * leave me alone. i am really grumpy. why am i the only adult-acting person in this house? we've been to church, we are both suffering from the lack of sleep, but i am the one who has washed the dishes, finished washing the towels and hung them to dry, and started putting the dry laundry away.
*hugs rose and holds her close*
{{{(((rose)))}}} how horrid!
he's sitting in front of his laptop watching yet ANOTHER new DVD he has bought. grrrrrr
honey, the only way this will change is if you DO NOT pick up the slack. Leave them chores alone and go do something you like. Don has to learn to grow up.
hint: wash only your clothes and not his :D
I WANNA KICK SOMETHING !!! oh... lookee he4... sprite's backside. bend over honey, it's for a good cause... loll
hey! Leave my backside alone, that is private property!
hire a maid....then see if there's $$$ for new DVDs.
here, kick cyberbully. He/she/it is in need of good kickings.
okay, okay, just thought i'd try.
we need to get you one of those punchy clowns that you whack and they bouce back up again.. repeat until anger abated
*seconds Kate* Told you before, time for you to get domestic help for some chores once a week. Don can go play with hims...I mean his DVDs if he does not agree.
ugh.... don't start me. the wretch has made an ad for microsoft. every time they show the ad, i get to see that ugly dial.
sidenote: for some reason I keep seeing popcorn in the grid
(asnd all maid dollars come out of his birthday and Christmas gift envelope...)
oh sprite. remember the little ones at church who call me granny rose?
what Kate says
no no no no no no no, not changing the subject now. Hold those kids, first decide to get a cleaning lady.
the little girl, Grace is 2 years old. and she has been watching ballet dancers. you shouldsee her pirouetting and doing arabesques. soooo cute
the little girl, Grace is 2 years old. and she has been watching ballet dancers. you should see her pirouetting and doing arabesques. soooo cute
rose thinks that if she says it twice, we will forget about the cleaning lady. We won't.
u both mean so well, but this place is so untidy and dirty in parts, i couldn't allow a cleaner in until i clean and tidy the place... loll
sanity and domestic harmony more important than a few dollars.. no matter how much you squeak!
honey, it is HIGH time you get help. Stop making reasons not to. You don't have to have a perfectly cleaned and tidy house to get a help.
and awwwww @ Grace. So sweet.
entirely the wrong mindset tose... they don't know you, you pay them to work, not jusdge...and you can explainit all away if you must by saying you are a bit too infirm to keep up with the house.
(we all know peope that clean before the char lady comes... silliness and false pride, if you ask me...)
Rose, a cleaning lady is to do the cleaning - you don't clean before she comes, that's why you hire her!
*sigh* okay, i'll talk it over with himself. if he realises that i am totally unwilling to live like this he may pick up his game or pay the cleaner.
exactly. A good help will actually enjoy setting things to right for you. Please, Rose. This is a recurring issue between you and Don and your health does NOT permit this kind of stuff. Not doing it all by yourself, and not having the stress of Don sitting on his lazy ass and you doing all the work. Swallow your pride and get HELP.
talk it over? HOw about lay a fiat on him? done deal.
this is the way it is and by the way, I'm going to buy a new hat whilst I'm at it... ;)
I think it is past talking it over with the lazy so-and-so. I think it is time to tell him that YOU have decided to hire a cleaning lady. He is not your boss, ya know.
okay, i hear you all.
"I am through with doing the chores alone, no matter how tired I am. I am also through with being frustrated about your not helping. And I am through with fighting about it. The cleaning lady starts next week."
*giggles at the new hat*
We will be checking rose...
not a new hat... new shoes, new dresses, new tops and new trousers.
there you go.
if he can have DVDs, rose can have an equally unnecessary thing like a hat to lift her spirits and don when attending docto'rs appontments or going to the gym...
oh my.... a gym hat..... hmmmm
I was going to say shoes... but I was afraid you'd think of something sensible like walkers :(
*pictures rose in a gym hat and a pink tutu*
oh no Kate. the last pair i bought (just 6 weeks ago) are bright red slip ons.
A new dress!!! Perfect :) and shoes, handbag, hat, and gloves to match!!! WOOOOOOT! Pictures will be needed...
and the pair before that are embroidered slip ons. i adore them
you can wear those shoes with the tutu and gym hat
ROFL spritey... can picture the tutut and hat.... with rose giving the evil eye to anyone that looks at her sideways...
:D
I adore red shoes!!! <3 <3 <3
when we went to pick up rose and don from the airport, I was wearing a pink tutu... around my neck :D
bless you both... not grumpy any more and i do promise to bring up the subject of housework with DH. i try to not call him lazy, but when he bolts out the door to help anyone else, i just see flames.
Were you tasting the sangria spikers for adequacy?
great, honey. And please remember, you do not need his permission to hire help. You can tell him you have decided it is necessary.
oh, sprite, and what a moment that was... do you remember all the people waiting, and laughing and clapping when we hugged?
rose did a lot of tasting sangria while she was here :D
lol yes! And you so very tired, and then seeing the tutu and laughing your ass off
He must hear that rose... I think he is juist stuck in the 1940/50s mindset... he probably never gave it serious consideration.. even when you did mention it (too politely methinks...press your point that this is absolutely required)
Now back to the tutu and other glad rags!
it was awesome. Finally meeting in the flesh and able to hug for real. We did LOTS of hugging those weeks.
Sprite, you must have been a sight for sore eyes when they got off the plane! Picturing the tutu choker ;)
did we ever !!! loved your hugs... *sigh* what a time we had.
It's a wonder you didn't hug her to pieces sprite!
I looked absolutely ridiculous, lol.
oh, our rose is hugproof :D She gives as good as she gets.
Kate, i had sent it over in the bottom of a box of goodies i sent over to sprite. apparently when it was unpacked, both sprite and Rob couldn't stop laughing.
Quite sure rose had no problem picking you out of the crowd at the arrival gate! (flask of sangria covertly tucked in a pocket for easy access...)
lol I think we would have recognised eachother without the tutu just as well. But for laughs, it was brilliant.
LOL rose.. I have read of you goody box care packages... what was she meant to do with the tutu? (If not wear it at the airport for ease of identification...???)
she could have worn around one thigh, you know, like a garter..... *ducks under the table*
This grid does not seem very friendly... and still people were finished in just a few scant minutes!
rose and I exchange goodie boxes, and have so much fun compiling them... and unpacking them!
LOL... I was thinking that Rob could have worn it instead... ducks under with rose...
wow - I'm really dragging!! not even half way
so far it went fast for me. If not for all the chatting, I'd have been done ages ago, I think. 9 more to find.
*hugs flosey* Good evening, dear lady! How are you and how is the head?
Rob proudly wears a hat rose sent us... a hat with built-in ventilator, working on solar energy.
hi ((fosey)) exhoing concern over the terrible migraine...
head is fine thanks Sprite, just tired now and would be wise to go to bed - but I don't always follow my head when it is telling me~
cooee flosey dear. hugs sweetie.
thanks Kate - all clear today - it just seemed strange to me to be getting them after all the years I've been clear of migraine
*giggling at Rob wearing that hat *
the pink tutu was sent to us because it is an inside joke between rose and me. We always say Rose is still able to wear the tutu she wore when she was little... around her ankle, now, that is.
oh, been there, done that, flosey! Knowing I have to go to bed and postponing... and postponing... and doing just this one more thing... and then reading a little...
Glad it cleared flosey.. now you will have to recuperate - they can take the stuffing out of you for a while...have you had any changes in meds lately, unusual weather.. possible allergy development since you have had a few... maybe they need to look inside your noodle and make sure the blood vessels are behaving rhemselves...
always cheers me up to see the 3 of you in here chatting
after rose went home, I gave the tutu to our neighbour girl... she is SO proud of it and wears it often. Her mom wanted to make it the right size and she just refused to part with it for the time that would take, so cute :D
*hugs flosey* And we enjoy seeing you join us.
lolll really sprite ?? how adorable !!
yeah it is so sweet
when you aren't in chog we are not complete flosey!
does she wear under her armpits? how old is she ?
as always flosey, i love 'seeing' you in chat.
she is 5, I think, and yes, under her armpits, holding it up.
roflolll
thanks Kate
and you should see her proud little face. It clearly says: "I am looking absolutely beautiful and I know it."
true, Kate
they could sew tie-up ribbons onto the waist and use as straps until whe grows.. then she wouldn't have to hold it up.
I think her mum has fixed it by now. But it was great, the way she did not want to let go of it.
how cute !! next package i send will have one her size in it. is she small for her age or about average do you think?
the self confidence of youth :D I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and gayyyyyy!!!
about average, I think.
lol Kate! Exactly!
lolll Kate.
look what you've done. Now that song is in my head
I can picture her dancing around... she can join rose's "grands" in spirit...
oh, btw, the singing went great yesterday! Lots of compliments.
uh oh.... :/ do I have to go tho the box for installing earworms?
and rob has cut off his hair and shortened his beard, rose! He looks 15 years younger, lol.
Well done sprite! Did you rake your bows and accept the accoldaes of the adoring fans ?
I don't think we have a penalty box for earworms. Yet. We might have to create one :P
hehehe it was a tiny audience, but yeah, we did enjoy their reactions!
oh my. what brought that on?
Congratulations then sprite, it sounds like you enjoyed it...which is al;-important!
I think the heat, rose. It was very hot and humid here, and he kept having this wet, dripping ponytail. All of a sudden he decided he had enough.
he'd had enough*
meep meep... that's what The Roadrunner says...
we did, Kate!
yeah, enable does not know the roadrunner. Poor beastie.
fireflies. Anything I can help with before I go?
WTG SPRITE !!!
(see that pretty girl in that mirror there...)
Congratulations sprite!!!
bless you both, sprite. xoxox
Enable is obviously lacking in decent culture...
tiny hint on the m8 i heard about?
a scaled-down version of a building-to-be, Kate
ma8. uses the high scoring tile, ends with french ending
or as the dictionary says" a small model or study in three dimensions for either a sculptural or an architectural project"
ty both, I will look. Enjoy the day sprite, hope you get some nice relaxing time tjoday!
ha! got it from spritey's dictinary definition ;)
no rest for the wicked. OA meeting, visiting rob's new work place, nails.
thanks for the hints :)
*hugs Kam on her way out*
on a Sunday sprite ??
On Sunday? thought you'd be able to read and practise your new art!
dear friends, a big *hug*. Thanks for the wonderful company, as usual.
*giggles* snap Kate
Kam. leaving???? never see her any more... :(
yes, he has the key now, rose :D And he wants to show it to me... it is in the woods in Amsterdam...
I'm not leaving
:D <--- devilish grin for rose...
ahhhh, okay. {{Rob}} and for you {{sprite}}
I am leaving, Kam just came in! Sleep well, dear people. And enjoy your day. *extra hug for rose*
yay Kam!! and HI! :)
I've been here since the house cleaning
did we miss your entree? If so, I apologise. If not, shame on you for lurking while we need your company :D
you.... lurker, you! ;
I told Rose she didn't have to clean first...guess I got lost in the chatter
clopper isn't a word! anc you imagine?
Oh dear, sorry I must have missed that...wasn't ignoring you. It does happen sometimes when the chog flies and also trying to hunt fishies... (un successfully

I did not know that the group of sheep without the k was a word. But then, Babble recognizes all kinds of words I have never heard of
Agreed. Another stupid word
clue for the ma 8,60?
try FL words? I have all the Fs but don't know which word came from which F.
uses the high point tile and has double cons.
Molly, it's actually a common word in French, used namely in building and baking. It's covering the outside with a spray.
ty!
We use the same word for the same meaning, only with the K.
Oh, found the English verb, it takes double consonant (without the K). The K version is listed as a variant
I am in construction and when we talk or write about fl___ing a building or surface, it is with the K. Lots of difference between British and American spelling for things. You use cheque, we use check, etc.
As I said, I found the English verb, as in used in England :P
Words and their spellings, definitions and recognition are odd sometimes. When you look up fa4 in this grid, it says it is a Portuguese folk song. It is also a Gaelic word for "long ago" and yet that meaning is not given.
I agree. dictionary.com doesn't have the verb to strim, yet it's a very common word where I'm from
te 6/21 please?
nm, found for fw
congrats
ty Buggie, any clues needed?
I'm good for now thanks
how about a hint for that last te6? please.
te + perform an action again....
TY done!
I have a non babble question. I just went to one of my webpages which is for a magazine. the webpage address for the first time said this site is not secure. Like this site, it has what looks like a clock next to it. Should I be a bit more concerned with the site that says its not secure then any other ? should I delete it?
congrats, gramma...
well babble i a not secure site, too....
true pen
Google has implemented a new warning for sites that are phished for personal information. I don't use any sites that make this warning pop up. And Pen is right, Babble is not secure either.
Having been hacked 5 times, MLFAN, I wouldn't use that site.
ty aeb
then you won't use babble either, aeb?...;o)
I was just thinking the same thing Pen : D
Alas, alas....I still do, because when I joined in 2008 it was okay.
its the first tiem the site has ever said it so..
It is the first time because recently, Google must have found something to rank it "insecure"
aeb same here I still obviously use this site. I have deleted the site for the magazine.
most sites "phish" for personal info, I think....
It amazes me how many people post their email addresses in their profile. That is really asking for trouble.
I used to think that if one paid to be a member of a certain site, it was safer.
not necessarily....
you can surf "incognito" with Chrome....not if that would help prevent a phishing problem or not...
I'm not sure when this board went "unsecure" but it may have been when Dr. God quit charging
I think everyone is being much more careful in pointing out site insecurities...not sure that sites with that warning now are any less secure than they were before...
Technically, just being on the internet makes you vulnerable. And most people use Facebook which opens you up to all kinds of internet insecurity.
i don't do facebook.....i have avoided it because i think i would get consumed by it....and i have no desire to reconnect with someone i went to first grade with...
me too.. I have no desire to reconnect with friends from school.. maybe one from college.
i know my personality....i would have to constantly check pages of people I know....only thing i miss is seeing some family photos....
fb has been a blessing for my 90+ year old mother
i bet...
no email,,,, just fb on her computer ~ she hears from all the family
one site for all....nice for her....
molly I noticed this site and some others became unsecure when my computer did a major update.
me on the other hand... yes I should watch my computer time
yes, everyone is being more proactive about letting you know about site insecurity....and every browser is being more careful....
I just went to google a few minutes ago.. isn't that site usually safe?
People used to email family photos to family members. That seems like "too much trouble" since the advent of Facebook. Shame.
yup...
well i have hit a wall here....guess i will go do the crossword....bbl to finish....bye all....
I'm so old I used to Mail family photos
Photos used to take a long time to share. You took them, had to wait for them to be developed, then mailed them to people. Now it is all instant.
Direct deposit, microwaved food, streamed videos. People don't have to wait for much anymore. Although I would rather wait for good food than ever microwave it.
the microwave saves me from starvation :)
Or get in line at the various grease pits that call themselves "Fast Food".
My new response to people who tell me "I don't cook" is "Really? Do you eat?"
I love cooking.. it relaxes me
i had my microwave taken out and replaced the space with an additional cabinet
I just don't get "I don't cook". It is a basic skill required by a fundamental physical need.
i see people buying prepackaged food instead of fresh vegetables all the time at the store
i live alone so if i get fresh veggies, half of it rots before i can eat it all
My late mother-in-law would have been better off not cooking.
i live alone too.. and i don't have that trouble
my mother couldn't cook to save her life..
She took her gorgeous brussels sprouts from her garden (in Sheffield England) and boiled them on high for 45 minutes.
that's pretty common natasha
Oh no, there is nothing worse than over cooked fresh vegetables.
omg, a terrible way to treat brussel sprouts
It felt criminal
God gave you these gorgeous things, and you boiled them till they were grey
prison guard to woman.. "what are you in for?" woman... i boiled the shit out of brussel sprouts
The trick to making fresh fruit and vegetables work is to only buy as much as you will eat in a few days. You can't shop once a week for one or two
did you have to eat them? that would be ick
true molly.. i buy just enough to get me through a few days
I'm the only veg eater in my house (2 men who won't touch anything that "grew in the ground" unless it's a potato). I often visit the farmer's market and split what I buy with a neighbor or friend.
If I see fruit starting to ripen, I use it for smoothies. If I'm over stocked on vegetables, I make soup and freeze it. It is all about managing what you have.
Yes, soup is a great way to treat aging veggies
Wow Natasha. True meat and potatoes men. That isn't the most healthy diet.
stats for the y pls?
Yu 4/9
thx!
good thing we don't have an aging veggies home
i've been trying to do a salad lunch which i make myself during the weekdays
Anyone seen ms Carrot ?... she hasn't been up to mulch
butternut squash, low fat feta, diced onions, mushrooms and my new fav riced cauliflower
because she's been beeten up or uprooted?
she got steamed that someone said she needed a new slice of life
you have so much dirt on her!
her new boyfriend the chef was trying to butter her up
thankfully she took stock of the situation
must have made her boiling mad
at the bingo game she shredded the competition
so her number was called, she must have been peased
I live in San Francisco's Chinatown. Working nights, I get home anytime between 4am and 7am and watch the curbs crowded for five blocks (plus side streets) with trucks loaded with produce just out of the ground or the orchards. including fruit and veggies that aren't supposed to be able to be grown here. I was raised on heavy Austrian food, boiled meat, boiled potatoes, rich desserts - India 3 yrs & Japan for 7 added those but returning to US never changed me until now. Better ate late than never.
could I have a clue for ma 8 60 please.
i used to live near Ctown too, that's the way to shop, pick up what you need for the day and cook right away -- like most european markets too
ma8 is the female version of a noble title (i think), use the high letter tile
no matter I just got it.
I had to really learn to shop, too. Now it seems normal. Friends in other parts of town are addicted to their own farmers markets.
i'm so off on that def. of ma8 lol
ty shirlockc
that Sprite gave? Agreed.
i like the farmer's markets, but there's no comparison to the $ of Ctown
For sure. The only advantage is that the markets have a greater variety . . . like protein!
i disagree about the variety, the first time i've had sapota, dragon fruit etc was from C-town and i'm chinese
more common now to see this stuff in the supermarket, but still rare/non existent in the farmers markets
I'm talking about variety of foods besides fruit and veg. I''m not ready to take home the fresh-killed chicken!
since they sell what they produce e.g., locally
Agree about the variety you're talking about. I don't know where you'd get better. And seasonal.
fresh chicken wouldn't be worth sticking your neck out for
my fav is the fruit lady on canal and mott in nyc, she has the best produce
no fair, ru. I'm getting ready to go to bed. I don't want to be up for hours thinking about all the clever retorts!
Re-tort or not retort, that is the question
well.. you could keep us abreast in some way jw
I grew up in NY. The family went out to Mott street at least once a month.
Okay, rocks. The problem is that I never figured out what to do with the pupik.
is Mott street anywhere near Hoople street?
I have to let Shirlockc answer that one.
how do you sleep around china town.. it's got to be really noisy?
I do wish I could take up your challenge, Ru. I'm a fun punner when I get going. But -- sleep calls. . . . No noise a'tall. None. Thick walls, well insulated. And, of course, I have been losing my hearing for years . . . .
lucky you.. (not about the hearing)
eh? what's that?
I'm fortunate to have pretty good hearing still.. my brother needs a hearing aide now though.. he wanted me to buy him one .. they're like $4,000 +
Don't you live in quiet Napa? Oh. Forgot about the fires. Have you moved?
i live in Napa.. it's quiet in my neighborhood.... or otherwise I wouldn't sleep... I'm a super light sleeper
*chortle* Only four grand to get someone to hear for you. That's pretty cheap. ... I didn't think you slept at all. You're always babble-ing
"aide"
no.. i sleep.. I'm not here all the time really
Sorry. That was a health-care joke. They're only funny to ambulance drivers.
my hearing aide was my ex MIL who yelled at me :D
Actually, you are here all the time. ru, just like sprite and rose and a few others. It's a pervasive spirit on this site - and what keeps it superior to all others I've seen or heard about. ... Do you remember an SNL sketch long ago with ... wait a minute, I'll go find it.
Here we go: https://tinyurl.com/aclj88t
That's it for me. Have a sunshiny day and don't forget to eat your veggies.
60 points for an 8 letter word. BIG HINT.

co8: codmeter - determines how big that fish _really_ was
or an athlete's junk
<---- not going there
Never heard of an athlete's junk referred to as "cod".
i was thinking of codpieces
Either way you are talking about a pole
yah me too
ooh good one ruru
yeah, you're reeling them in, ruru
Oh, 15th century athletes
you brought it up HH, and yes i went there
i searched the chog and can't believe nobody has mentioned the absence of the word "gadfly"
Uh, that could be because it doesn't spell out in the grid
that's why it's absent.
Exactly : D
*boom*
Harry, I was mincing garlic today and thinking about your icon : )
nodmeter - measure how boring the sermon was this morning.
my new crop is growing nicely. last years crop is pretty much either eaten or rotting.
You must clove garlic
on that note - going to do laundry! 41 to go.
Zorry
*Wonders if the squirrels and rabbits in Harry's neighborhood have garlic breath
any clues for the te 6/21
te+r4
Thanks. Got it from your clue :)

Hello libarebel! How are you doing? Welcome to the grid.
Hi Min! Doing well thanks & you?
Min is our newly liberated woman. Yay for Min!!
10 left and really trying not to list
It is no crime to list. Asking for clues in the chat is the same thing as looking at the list. You either do the grid without help, or with it. Just my way of thinking about it.
Liberated? Breakup or Divorce?
re 6/24, pls
To create again
Got out of the Slammer? :-D
ty Molly
I am well libarebel. Yes, I am liberated and happy about it. Scroll back in the chat log to see.Do not want to bore others with repeated posts.Gotta go. I will be back later
Min, no one here is ever bored by you posting about how your life is finally better. Post about it all you want.

That and the fact that words you entered hours ago disappear
Molly-- I reverse googled & found pe4/6! TY!
Never would have guessed it...
Reverse Googled?
Is that like putting the definition in? Because that is still a Google search.
Yup, Molly-- is that cheating?
