good morning all
Hi Sprite!!
*hugs Kam* Hello dear one! How are you today? Has your beloved left for his Dad's?
He and his dad are in the city of Paradise, Calif. Hot there too, though.
Paradise with hellish climate, LOL
I'm already tired of summer, ready for fall now. Too hot - near or over 100F every day.
way too hot. We are having a rather hot summer here too. 35-40 Celcius. Crazy.
yay, found the center E for nbt.
That's about the same, I think. I have one app that tells me the temp in C - looks cold to me, lol! 32F is freezing.
good job, rbud, and hi
Yay rbud! I'm still looking
turns out to be the name of one of our dogs, go figure. Well, if you double the last letter, that is.
95-104 Fahrenheit = 35-40 Celcius. Add to that a serious humidity.
Ha! Got it!
Ugh, humidity just makes it worse. Ours was up to 24% today and felt sticky - has been 11% for the past week or so until the sun sets
also the first name of the inventor of the flux capacitor, haha!
I have to work today and tomorrow, and I have to cook too. Think I will make casserole for tomorrow... into the oven and done.
sounds like a good plan
what kind of casserole?
Easy is the best when a lot needs to be done, for sure!
chicory casserole, I think. One of our favorites.
My main cook is away until at least Saturday, so I'm eating leftovers so far. I'll have to start cooking for myself tomorrow.
I hate cooking for myself alone. Always end up making a huge fruit salade and heating up a prepacked satah.
I'm going to the store tomorrow, so likely will bring home easy foods - seems like too much work to cook for me when no one else needs a healthy meal.
I have plenty of salad!
stuffed bell pepper for today, I think. With french bread, garlic butter... yep, that will do nicely
I'm sorry, there are just not 5 T words off that first column T, no way. I have one. :P
Sounds good! I *love* french and sourdough bread, but my stomach doesn't. No gluten for over 4 years. Hate that restriction.
I have three
I found them, rbud, so can you.
combo 'phrase' and person who
and like magic I find more, amazing how that works! :D
asking is finding :)
we used to call that the POP! on this other gamesite I hang around on - the power of posting
t + first two of to make a mistake + first two of where you go to buy fuel
oh, I like that!
and plural the person who, lol... that was my last one
(last of that T, not of the puzzle)
often asked for help with something and admitted we were only really posting for the POP. :D
treemob - forest

I think I just pick an odd time to play, but ah, well, so be it.

ah, ty!
Good day all!
Hello, Betsy.
Hey Haz...
Hi
hello car!
I really should be doing.....something. But I'm just so tired
Hello all. I usually lurk but the bird clues are making me bird crazy, anything a little clearer. Not getting any birds!
people will feather you with clues shortly mich
The gr8 is one I've never seen before. One letter short of a colour, repeat.
Also eg5/14 - nearly Piaf's theme song
Thanks haz I thought I had monkeyed that, but I guess not.
The gr8 is not, as far as any dictionary I can see, a bird. It's an amulet. The gr5/18 is a water bird.
I stand corrected!
Hello, Haz, and all! Happy to see you standing here, corrected or otherwise! =)
Ditto. Are you well?
I am, thanks. And you?
Yes, very well. What news of your outstanding children?
My outstanding children are learning to drive this summer (!), which as everyone knows is utterly terrifying.
Thanks all, never heard of the amulet or the bird.
Oh, that's frightening on every level. They're that old? TWO of them learning at the same time?
Yep, they're 16 and take turns driving us on all our errands. I actually don't think they're any worse at it than average, but it still feels like we will surely all die before this is over!
I have 7 kids, all but 1 drive and my youngest is just waiting for his test. (He'll be 19 next week)
I can imagine you staggering inside after one practice session to be greeted with 'Mum, it's my turn now!'
Ah, we don't let them start driving until they're 17. Another year of sanity preserved.
Michnick, you are now fully equipped for both magic and diving for fish.
How was it for you, Michnick?
Thanks Vic, going out to magically get fish.
Haz, Here in Israel one is required to have a driving teacher, a parent isn't allowed to have a student driver take the wheel. Saves a lot of nerves.
It is still pretty terrifying to sit alongside a learner driver. I think it's the feeling of not being in control. I think it's definitely better for a proper teacher to teach the fundamentals but it's so expensive here that you just wouldn't work up enough practice before the test.
I could be wrong but I think in the Republic of Ireland, provisional licence holders can opt to drive by themselves. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Luckily their father did the first few lessons in the parking lot and first time on roads. But now it falls to me to be their accompanist as they drive around town. It's a long drawn-out process here: permit at 16, but for 6 months they must have an adult in the passenger seat, then after they take their test there's another 6 months in which they cannot drive other children except family members, and various other restrictions, so 17 is the earliest they can get a full license. They have to take a certain number of hours with a driving teacher, as well, plus a certain number of hours in a classroom (which they've already completed) before they can even get the permit.
I think some people can get the fundamentals of driving pretty quickly - it's getting used to the fact that they're driving a potential weapon that some young guys don't seem to understand for a long time.
Michnick, did you get the eg5 bird, as well? If so, that's a feather in your cap. Wow, 7 kids to go through the process. Just as well it was a driving teacher and not you, for sure.
You are right, Haz, it is crazy expensive and everyone in Israel thinks it's a racket bec. the teacher is also the one to decide how many lessons you take until he'll sign you up for a test.
I had a friend, dead now, who was the worst driver I've ever encountered. She never got beyond the gripping of the steering wheel like her life depended on it and avoided certain places in case she had to reverse. It ended up that I had to reverse for her sometimes. The laugh was that she had taught all her children to drive.
I hear you, MIchnick. It's just an all round expensive time.
That does sound a little sketchy, Michnick. Good luck to your son on his test. How on earth did this friend of yours pass a driving test, Haz?
No idea, Vicuna.
Yes, Vicuna I also got the eg5 bird. I would have been happy to teach most of my kids (not the youngest, our relationship is not picture perfect) instead it costs around $1000 per kid!!!
She drove like a learner driver who had only been in a car a couple of times before.
Hello all, Haz, Mich, Vic!!!! So nice to see you, been a long time. :)
Hello, HK.
Hello HK. We're consoling each other about the perils of children learning to drive.
Yes, Haz, I see. Have never done that, but taught kid across the street to drive stick & grandson too. Patience.
See that's the other difference between UK and US. Automatic cars are few and far between here.
So most will learn with the whole clutch thing - hill starts are a special memory.
I had a stick shift until 2 years ago, but no more. My kids will presumably never learn stick shift. Indeed, maybe they'll be the last generation to learn at all, before it's all self-driving cars!
Other countries are so much smarter. Bet you even buy 'petrol' and buy in 'litres & imperial gallons,' yes?
LOL -Hill starts - just LOL.
We buy petrol - at ridiculous prices! and we buy in litres. I still think in gallons, though.
It's funny, you can do hill starts without thinking but once you try to explain it to someone else, it's a whole different ball game.
Eeeek - I dread self-driving cars.
Especially when they're revving fit to kill the car and it's still rolling back down the hill.
I liked where Mich (back to lurking?) said in Israel, parents not allowed to teach kids to drive - smart.
Yes, I think it can be counterproductive sometimes. And you might be an awful driver and pass on bad habits.
Been to San Francisco many time, always visited friends, never needed car. First time I went for work, I went to rent a car. I was insisting on stick. The guy looked at me like I was crazy. We only rent automatics. What? That's not what I drive! But, lol, those are not hills in SF, those are mountains. Was still hard to get going on top of hill, even with automatic.
Yes Haz, exactly. Plus, saves so much stress to have someone else do the teaching.
I can imagine. How did they manage in the days before cars. Did horses have to pant their way up those hills?
I always remember my mother trying to teach me to use the clutch and I just couldn't do it and was in tears, utterly frustrated. Then my dad (who usually is a much less helpful teacher) came out to see the problem, said one little thing that made it all clear to me, and after that I was fine. I've always remembered that as a lesson in how different people think about things in different ways, and how you need to try different kinds of explanations, not just the same one over and over. (Like Babble clues!)
You're right, Vicuna. People's minds work in different ways. That's what amazes me about teachers, they have to find a way to explain things to different minds.
Our next door neighbours had a foster child who had difficulty with maths. They found she could do it much better if it became 'money' rather than just figures.
lol - yes, like Babble clues, that's funny. Gotta always approach the learner on their level, gotta really assess with what exactly they're struggling.
Vic, Haz - I tutored a friend's kid in high school algebra. She was having trouble with quadratic equations. Now, I've never used a quadratic equation in my life, but I remembered 'FOIL' so I said I'd give it a try. I had her try to do a couple of equations first so I could watch her, see what it was she didn't know or was having trouble with - you wanna know what her problem was: Didn't understand how to deal with the minus sign in any mathematical equation. Grinding halt. Let's step into the way-back machine . . .
I teach art and am usually very good at that, but on the other hand when I was trying to teach my daughter cello I just could not explain things to her because she simply fundamentally didn't understand musical things the same way I do. Very frustrating! But she eventually got a teacher who was able to communicate with her.
Just looking through the chog. Teaching my 18-year-old to drive right now. We're rotating through me, his dad, my husband, and his sister going with him so none of us go completely insane.
It all boils down to how important it is to teach and be taught well.
lol mag - great approach. New slogan - 'It only takes 4, maybe more.'
Hello magmom. It's good you can spread the burden.
Hello, magazinemom. Great idea, both so you don't go insane, and so your son gets multiple different explanations of everything.
As long as you're all saying the same thing and sticking to the same rules.
ah yes Vic, there is that. That's a plus. That can also confuse the heck outta the learner.
Very true, Haz.
It has to be multiple ways to explain the same thing, not multiple different rules!
Come to think of it, will they ever invent an automatic car teacher?
Actually had to work for a minute or two....LOLOLOL
Heya car :)
Dear me, car. Interrupting babble time?
Hello, car.
Oh the humanity!
Hello!
I need to shower, do some errands. Great to see you all again. Good luck with all the driving lessons. ttyl

Husband has arrived home so I'd better head to the kitchen. Good to talk with you all!

Goodbye, HK and Haz!
And goodbye for me, too.

hi
Hi, all. I had a conversation here a couple of days ago about crafts. I have arthritis in both hands and, being obsessive, have collected enough yarn to stock a shop. One of you ladies suggested old people's charities and I have just unloaded my pile of yarn. It has gone to a local daycare drop in centre and they are delighte to have it all. Thank you to whoever it was who suggested it.
twas i.....glad to help!
Thank you so much. The centre has ladies who knit and crochet but as yet no gentlemen. As this is a port I had thought there might be retired sailors who knitted their own socks.
Or the old Football Players homes(LOL) Some do knit though.
We have a rugby team here but I suspect they would consider themselves too macho to knit.
It was a fad a while ago in the U.S.A.
What is even better is the space I shall gain. I have boxes and bin bags full of yarn.
Found this time they also had football players viewing and learning BALLET moves to improve their game.
The mind boggles tho' I can see that could be useful.
Around......
Watching the players training for the World Cup, I suspect they might still be using ballet moves.
re7/36....clue please
Thanks again aeb. You solved my problem for me. I am off to await the return of husband and grandson from carp fishing. bye

Just thought I would troll through chat for clues before I left. aeb & jaxx - that is such a heart warming thing, about the yarn. Again, we witness the Beauty of Babble :)
yes....always good ideas(tried and true) from good Babble Chatters.
re 5/14 ... put on sails again
What is a meme and why does Babble not accept it?
i knit with a group that donates knit items for different causes and always asks for donated yarns (aging knitters, cleaning out attics) - check with your church knitting groups
we knit newborn baby hats, here for hospitals.
lap blankets for hospice, scarves and hats for homeless
Meme: an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations.
No idea why not accepted
we crochet plastic bags for waterproof mats for the homeless.
maybe too "new" word
Thanks Ema, exactly what I thought - too new
thanks doseffing.
re yarn - have friends that teach knitting a women's prison and also need wee little items for children in shelters so I always check tag sales, thrift stores and garage sales.
hello 90 to go
Hi all. Don't know if Jaxx is still here. It was me who suggested what to do with her yarn etc. So pleased to hear that it's gone to a good home. x

Could go and spend some time in Greece I suppose - what else is there to see there besides ruins and olive trees? There is always southern France -- love it there. Will have to decide sometime soon for next year.
