I am CRYING laughing right now.....this morning we are required to have the students fill out a "personal risk assessment" thing - its an anonymous survey the state sends us, so they can collect data about young people, I guess. One of the sweetest students in my class raised his hand, and in absolute earnestness asked "Mrs. C, this question asked "how many physical fights have I been involved in this year?" Do I INCLUDE hockey games, or should I only count street fight type things?" I high-fived him, told him to only count non-sport related altercations. A true New Englander, that one!

well, I started quilting a few years ago but have gotten into making my own clothes in the last year. I have at least 3 unfinished quilts and 9 or 10 finished tops that my grandmother made and never quilted. I talked my mom into giving me those to finish and give to all my cousins so I need to get back to quilting!

and my sewing room is what is supposed to be a formal living room, but who needs that

8:57 am

That's the way with us quilters. Lots of things to finish...

8:58 am

Do you fmq?

yeah, but I'm not very good at it

I could really benefit from a stitch regulator

8:58 am

I, too, am a quilter

8:58 am

hokie we only have a eat in kitchen no use for a formal dining room either

8:59 am

shoeman

8:59 am

last column bottom r?

my first one I finished on a basic Brother machine with a tiny harp space and it is a mess in places. I now have a straight stitch machine with a big harp so that helps. My favorite quilt I have made was just wavy lines with a walking foot, so I may do that more.

9:01 am

i remember Brother typewrters

I have 2 of those mlf but not sure

9:01 am

My sewing machine has its own stitch regulator, but I'm not good at fmq either.

(last col bottom r)

9:01 am

What about you, marksdolly?

I watch Angela Walters and Leah Day FMQ like it's just 2nd nature and I don't know how they are so smooth

9:02 am

hokie i know not that easy to figure out but every word i try goes to the other r and i have 9 of those

9:02 am

I know, right? My problem is I don't want to practice.

Bea, are you the one in the triangle or near the VA border? I keep mixing up the NC people.

9:03 am

9:03 am

bzz practicing is no fun

9:03 am

i have quilted for 43 yrs

wow

9:03 am

Yes, I'm near the VA border just north of the triangle.

9:03 am

awesme marks.. self taught?

9:03 am

cannot hand quilt like I used to but do @ least 1 hand quilt a yr

ok, someone else the other day was in the triangle

9:04 am

9:05 am

dolly, I have always wanted to hand quilt. Started doing the big stitch with perle cotton, but just did small pieces.

I am the opposite, I don't want to do anything by hand. LOL

9:06 am

I only hand quilted for over 30 yrs but my body

9:06 am

I do hand embroidery. Love that. But lately, Ive gone back to crocheting.

My grandmother hand quilted all hers. She pieced some by hand but most of the tops I have she has machine pieced.

9:07 am

really gives me heck when I do it now

9:08 am

I just finished hand quilting a quilt top for a friend

9:08 am

whos gma

9:08 am

had handquilted the pieces

9:09 am

Dolly, it was nice to meet you. I've got to get busy with this monster house. Guest coming this weekend...bzz...

9:10 am

and you as well:)

And I gotta get back to the painting when I have good light! Adios all

just finished, any clues needed?

9:14 am

hi sorry for late join to the conversation, was in class....I machine piece but hand quilt, in case that counts?

ok HAGD everyone

9:18 am

and I hand appliqué with wool - hand stitching for that - but I have someone else do the quilting

9:24 am

always count Trif, I did that for a time, until my neck/shoulders would no longer allow me to hand stitch as much

9:24 am

it still comes from the heart!

9:24 am

I started out hand appiqueing most of my quilts :)

9:30 am

I find that amazing - I am woeful at applique

9:31 am

I tried fmq - even took lessons. What I learned is that I think in straight lines and geometric patterns only. So it's better to leave the quilting to someone who is good at it.

9:32 am

that's part of the reason that I don't do the machine quilting... my hubby loves to do free motion!

9:33 am

but I think too much like you do

9:36 am

i dont like the look of machine quilting, and I LOVE to hide little messages and symbols meaningful to the person I am making the quilt for into the work.

9:37 am

that is where's at!

9:38 am

depends on the feel of what I want from the quilt, as to how I finish it :)

9:39 am

i love the slow pace and quiet of hand quilting. i love thinking about the person it's for, quilting it slowly. There is too much "rush" in the world. I relish doing something slowly.

9:40 am

I get that from hand appliqué - it takes me out of space and time in many ways.

9:41 am

again, i bow.

9:41 am

gosh just being with you guys keeps me in stitches

9:41 am

hardy har

9:41 am

and I pray for the person that I am making it for..quilting, for me, too, is relaxing, therapeutic, and slows the pace, it's peaceful

9:42 am

i like how you seamlessly worked that joke in, ru

9:42 am

9:43 am

9:54 am

I have a wedding ring pattern quilt I didn't make it though

9:54 am

they are heirlooms. I'm sure your cousin will cherish the gift.

9:55 am

yeah.. the ones he had burned up in the fire.. they had minutes to leave the house

9:55 am

that pattern would take forever to do, LOL, and I once thought I wanted to make it, but I"m not into the arcs and circles, so prob best that I didn't

9:55 am

I have 2 more hand pieced quilt tops to hand quilt for my friend, whose grandma hand pieced them before she died

9:56 am

my brother got a surprise when he saw the quilt at my home as he had wanted it for his children I think I asked my mom if I could have It and she had said yes. he never knew …:D

9:57 am

would it make you dizzy?:)

10:00 am

Good morning. What a great conversation this morning! I have several quilts that I cherish but don't use because they're to special to me; or they're the wrong size for our beds. I have 2 antique quilts probably made in the 1920's or 30's (judging from the fabrics) but they are for single beds.

10:01 am

192 left

10:02 am

in those days they were more important as they were hand done as they took longer to complete

esp like doing the laundry and making soap, and all the gardening and canning

10:05 am

Both are on white backgrounds and are colorful but many colors are faded (maybe from worn fabrics?). I think one is a wedding ring pattern $ the other is a drnken path (IDK if that's the right name of that one, though)

10:06 am

mark do you still do it mostly by hand or have you used one of those "high tech

10:06 am

sewing machines?

10:06 am

those are very classic patterns, love em both!

10:06 am

I do by machine, but don't have a fancy one.. :)

10:06 am

I just need the simplest to get er done :)

10:07 am

the wedding ring pattern is the circles partly innertwine

10:07 am

mark more fun that way so you can control more of what you do and not rely on technology

10:08 am

do any of you quilters watch fons and porter?

10:08 am

10:08 am

I watch it off and on... I only live an hour from where they originate from :) their shop has since sold

There are many different versions of it though.

10:13 am

Dresden plate and pinwheel I like :)

10:13 am

10:13 am

me too!

10:14 am

I love cat quilts

10:15 am

bear claws are a fave too

10:16 am

I have seen those but didn't know the name of them

10:16 am

Bzzn, thanks for that info. I'll have to do some research into it now. At one point I'd thought of hanging them up as wall hangings; but having kids (at that time) who were too active to have irreplaceable items out, I didn't to it (& I thank goodness I didn't!)

10:17 am

just dont let the sun hit them directly

10:17 am

would you ever frame them nef?

10:17 am

could fade them out

10:17 am

I have hung decorative curtain rods on large wall spaces of my house and hang quilts from those.

10:18 am

mark if you kept them away from sunlight would it still hapeen?

10:18 am

they look vey nice like that!

10:18 am

dont think so

10:19 am

why isn't redialer a word ?

10:19 am

10:20 am

Ok, really! I have to start on this damn house...bzz...

10:21 am

10:22 am

We're planning to move to a senior living place this year, so it all depends on where we move. If there would be a big enough north- facing wall; then yes; I'd consider framing them & hanging them. I would love to display them because they really are beautiful.

10:22 am

you will sooo enjoy them!

10:23 am

just drape them on a bed or chairs etc

10:24 am

11:51 am

trif I have seen some of their videos freaks me out

11:52 am

11:52 am

I have a cat named Motley. Her litter was called Motley's Crue.

11:52 am

bzz LOL

11:52 am

I shouldn't say I "have" her. She is a feral I feed.

11:53 am

bzz you rock

11:53 am

it was quite factually an ad for bad living

11:54 am

should I be surprised trif?

11:54 am

Then I must really rock since I feed about 15 ctas a day...Spayed and neutered over 30 in the last three years...

11:55 am

i was surprised, if I'm being honest. They were GROSS

11:55 am

somebody has to do it

11:56 am

trif and nothing with them has changed as far as I know

11:57 am

excess and the crue went hand in hand, it was their calling card. they've cleaned up their act for the most part. there is a time limit on being a massive junkie and they burned every possile bridge.

11:58 am

as did most of the hair bands in the 80s.. I saw Def Leppard this AM

11:58 am

its a highly disturbing movie, for sure. I am not sure what my take away is supposed to be. Do I admire them now? No. I think they are hedonistic, misogynistic pigs. Do I marvel at how they "survived?" No. I admire cancer survivors, or something like that.

11:59 am

trif I am amazed they were not charged with anything during their career

11:59 am

ka 6 please?

12:00 pm

the leppards were drinkers, that's what nearly killed their drummer. money, youth, irresponsibility and access to any and every vice is a recipe for harm

12:00 pm

ka6 - ka + King of the jungle with a different second vowel

12:01 pm

12:43 pm

It isn't me, bonkers; but that is a problem I always have when using electric screw drivers. I end up stripping lots of screws because I can't seem to push hard enough to keep the screwdriver in the screws lots.

12:50 pm

the OR 8 = add an R between the O and the N - not a compound word

1:02 pm

Yesterday my grandson got on Babble under my name & put in 4 or 5 words, but then he posted in the chat. Under my name; he posted "Yo". Several people responded, & he admitted it wasn't me but rather my grandson. I don't think he thought anyone would respond. He's 9, I don't suppose he thought that his gma ever says "yo" before he posted that.
