haha, at least I finished my thought before the flip... hi, all
hi rbud
i looked back at what you said
hello everyone :)
yeah, this is a ten year old whose family is emotionally abusive, and the incident that made my sister (a counselor) tell me to report it was that her parents put some of her stuff in a backpack and threw it outside and like pushed her out as well, "kicking her out", at which point she injured her foot, presumably trying to jam it in the door to prevent being shut out. i don't know how long ago this was. and i can only assume they would have let her back in shortly and that it was just a really inappropriate scare tactic, but, she certainly believes they could possibly kick her out for real, because, she can't understand adult mentalities.
even if you're wrong, if you have "reasonable suspicion" and you're a mandated reporter, you face criminal charges for not reporting, so...
awww, poor kid. That's a tough one. But probably would get investigated and then discarded as unproven, I would bet. That's how it goes with a lot of cases, seems to me. Not guilty or innocent, just unproven. But maybe some attention would help them think twice about what they're doing.
and yes, mandatory reporting, you do what you have to do.
my fear is that it will make things worse -they'll be angry with her for bringing shame on the family
boy, it's a hard one to call.
Hihurshy. That sounds like very inappropriate adult behavior. Is this poor 10 year old of a different culture?
yes, her family is chinese. the parents don't really speak any english. the grandmother has lived in the US longest and speaks some english.
I just got here & went back to see what the situation was.
well now the hardest part for me is, i called our VP to tell her that i was going to report, and then she said ok, i've done my duty by telling her and she will file the report. only what i am reading online seems to indicate that that may not be considered fulfilling my duty by the state.
and i feel so scared and anxious about it. and it struck me that that must be how she feels A LOT of the time.
(I just put my response in the wrong box & am on my new iPad & can’t copy & paste yet.)
I wanted to say that the parents need to know that that isn’t appropriate behavior when dealing with a 10 year old in our society, etc.
Clues are up
What does your state require for a report?
Thanks lickety
yeah. it's just so sad overall. i guess the mom was very sick after the girl was born, and did not really bond with her. the grandma yells at her a lot and sometimes threatens to leave if she doesn't get better grades. she's terrified the grandma will leave because her parents are worse.
for the grandma it sounds like it's a combo of genuinely thinking that threats will force her into doing well in school and not being able to control her own temper.
Poor Kid!
Eeeewwww possum in the backyard under the bird feeder!
it sounds like i'm supposed to call the county department of social services
Well, hurshy, you can call them & explain the situation. They should have an interpreter o
yeah. i'm going to see if my sister agrees that i need to call myself, and then probably call tomorrow. cause i want to give more background and detail than what i briefly told the VP, and express my concern about possible retaliation on her for talking about the family problems
Available to explain to the family that that isn’t helpful in our society. Social service people are normal people (99% of the time
yeah. and this is california, after all. i HOPE we have a better than average social services system.
Do call yourself. I once called on *mysel* - but didn’t intend to get followed by social service for a year!
it'd be hard for them to follow me as i'm moving in june
No, *I* called the Crisis Nursery linenot understanding what it was and how it worked. Both of our kids are ADHD; & when our daughter was about 5; she was a
Not a nice kid to her older brother & took after him with a knife 1 time when the 2 were alone for 1/2 hour or so. She really wanted hid piece of cake (she’d already eaten here)
(I gotta get used to this iPad!) Anyway, she ate her piece of cake & wanted his, so took after him with a knife. He locked himself in his room & she body-slammed the door, cracking the wood trim.
shows how stressed i am by this that i only just noticed the bottom row of the grid is all grey to begin with...
crash - 25 for tomorrow
good night everyone
ps 5 x 2
ah yes, thanks diz
mo8 & 9
I got all upset & wanted to get her out of the house overnight, so called the crisis nurses & asked if I could do that. NOPE, that’s not how it wotked. So social service followed us for a year; - & decided we needed a weekend every month with *our son* in a foster house! Goofy but true. (And that wasn’t the problem; she was,)
gosh, i'm sorry to hear that, nef
Our daughter is 36 now; & I joke she’s never slept through the night yet. We can look back on it & laugh now, but she’s vowed never to have kids because she’s afraid of what they might do to her!
yeah i don't have my own. kids are fun in a way, but i need to be able to get away from them at the end of the day.
mo 8/9
And our son ended up only going to that foster home about3-4 weekends. It was a single mom, & she had 1 child; the same age as our date. Who had a crush on our son & wouldn’t leave him alone!
Both kids are productive adults, so it all worked out in the end (even if they didn’t outgrow the ADHD)
this girl, i think also has ADD (maybe H, maybe not), but i'm sure living in fear also undermines her ability to focus in school
Definitely!
good morning all
I think when you call social service, maybe ask/ remind them that it’s inappropriate to kick a 10 year out or threaten to leave her. I think people don’t realize the cultural differences indisciplining kids.
Hi sprite.
hiya Nef!
yay, a good K grid
Ow are you doing, sprite? I’m not usually online so late anymore
Most
on the mend, Nef. Second surgery on wednesday and then I hope I can start training with a pt. And how are you doing?
Oops! Sorry.
Getting old (obviously, since I can’t get chat in the Chong & words in the “at word†box ;-)
*giggles*
if I wasn't using lickety's babble browser, that would happen to me all the time too
My hubby gave me an iPad for our anniversary. Unfortunately; Lickety doesn’t work on apple devices.
true. I remember him wanting to make a version for Mac, but he doesn't know enough about Macs and he needed someone with that knowledge. Didn't work out, alas.
True. I think it’s bedtime for me now, my bt
sleep well, Nef, and happy dreams
my eyes won’t stay open much longer.
time to call it a day then... or you will end up with the keyboard imprinted in your cheek
Good night. And take care of yourself, sprite!
although... not much of a keyboard on an iPad I guess
will do!
Why so many small grids of late? Come on Babble, give us a 500 plus one!!
hello worzel
Hey Sprite, how you doing?
getting there. Second surgery on wednesday and then I hope I can really start recovering
Sprite, are you still here?
I am, honey. How are you doing?
had to make a bathroom run and did not make it... bit of a mess :(
Hangin' in - step-daughter's wedding is next weekend. You have to have another surgery?!! I hope it goes well and doesn't cause too much more pain. Sorry 'bout the mess...hate when that happens
me too, makes one feel so lousy. And cleaning it up is taxing. Ah welll, all done. Sorry to hear you are having a tough time. Counting down to the wedding?
yeah, the surgeon wants to take out the big screw that goes through the joint. It is not a big surgery, if all goes well I will be home by evening.
Dreading the trip, but hoping all is beautiful for her special day. I've been feeling terribly rough lately
Well, taking a screw out sounds hopeful! Sounds like you're healing ok and don't need extra hardware!
I think so too. The surgeon said that if I were to put weight on it, the screw would break off. So it has to go if I am to take up walking and excercising!
Then it's good news! Walking is the result we all want for you!
indeed :D
Well, I have to get ready for bed - new pact is for me to try to get in bed by 12:30...I have 6 minutes to brush my teeth and wash my face...I'm late already! Good to "see" you for a bit. Good luck with the next procedure! *Hugs!*
sleep well, dear one. Will keep you in mythoughts and prayers. Things will work out. *hug*
+ a space somewhere
Things have a way of working out! *Hugs!*

Oh good, I wasn't sure if that clue was too old or obscure.
Actually it was perfect but what are doing up so late or early.
I'm one of those people who goes in to work early for the benefit of leaving early.
Whenever I go to bet early I wake up early it makes for a tough cycle. In any case thanks I am finished so HAGD

hi nef ty
hmm, I thought I followed those directions perfectly, but what I came up with was not in the dictionary :D
I had to type it in about 3 times before it would take
got it, was using the wrong vowel. there aren't even enough for what I was trying.
the right word for the mo8 comes up with a definition but I don't think its a disease
just by looking I would guess it means one number
It’s singular term or number
it does look like that doesn't it
More used to seeing the poly..
so I was close!
Yay algebra!!
:D
I thought it ended in osis for a teenage disease but that's not in the grd
grid
i gtg will be back
I know of 2 teens right now with the disease
luckily not mine
algebra is not a disease ;)
ty for super clue.....got the 8 and 9
some people think it is
I liked algebra
What a boring grid.
I loved mt
definitely seems straightforward today
Liked algebra and geometry, hated trig
all math, including algebra & trig
I can't even remember trig. I liked algebra, geometry, and calculus
Sorry, learning to babble on iPad & I keep hitting the return key instead of the back key
usually people hate geometry more than trig.
hey, guess what - spam and mosh still not words LOL
I had a high school math teacher who said women couldn’t understand advanced math because we couldn’t think spatially, so my best friend & I proved him wrong. :-)
run and hide - momo is in the grid!
remember that talking Barbie who said "math is hard"? that didn't go over well either.
You're not from Montana are you Nef? I tutored a woman whose high school math teacher told her she "couldn't do math"..?!?!?
and I am way more spatial than my husband. when he loads the dishwasher I wonder about him
same here carla
My biggest challenge in Math was taking physics before calculators came
I’m not from MT, but my siblings live there. That was in NW MN back in the ‘60’s
I'm glad he's helping out but I end up redoing it all
holy cow, bichon, I can't imagine
well.. I better get off of here and get ready to do taxes.
Ohhh.. slide rules?
when did calculators come on the scene, early 70s?
I could never figure out a slide rule. I did do well in humanites and social sciences
I graduated college in '68
We only had super basic calculators when i took college physics. But by the time I was in heat transfer I had a calculator that could graph, and you could enter several formulas, and use multiple memory spots. That was nice.
Gosh, bichon, I did that; I still have my slide rule too! And I remember my hubby’s first calculator, it was nearly the size of a brick!
I fondly remember my Texas Instruments brick.LOL
LOL!!
my husband still has (and uses) his TI circa late 80s
nice. Ok! Off to do taxes! For real! (not mine)
I gave our grandson our son’s ‘90’s TI calculator. It’s a bit advanced for a 9 year old, though. ;-)
when I started college computers had been on the scene for just a few years. my bro who was 4 years older and majoring in engineering was required to get one. I was accounting and it was optional to have a computer. So luckily I did not ever have to do math without a calculator.
I keep wanting to make spittoon dagnabbit
And I keep trying Samoa’s & it’s not a word
but a delicious girl scout cookie
Boy! I have lots of 4 & 5 letter words & the 8 & 9, but this 6 letter words are few & far between, aren’t they?
yeah, I just went to the list and guessed one but the 2nd one I came to is proving troublesome
I hate math
emit item
ok
I hated typing. And Home ec.
and gym
I really jinxed myself saying it was too easy with the list. Really can't find the 6s and some 5s.
I loved gym
Yes, I hated gym too. We didn’t have girls sports back then,
sports for girls in the early 60's wasn't a big thing
I went to the same HS as my parents and I think my mom (c/o '61) had field hockey. We never had that. I played softball, volleyball, basketball, and ran track.
In gym, we had floor hockey and calisthenics & half court basketball. And you never ran!
we still had to wear the ugly gym uniforms in late 80s/early90s
My school didn't have girls sports. College, we were required to take gym classes
My yearbook only had cheerleaders in the sports section, there wasn’t even a girl’s golf team (& we had a nice golf course in town & females were allowed to play).
My mom graduated in '61 and I graduated in '91 and we had the same gym teacher!
A teen aged Jewish girl from New York definitely didn't do sports
shoot, nef, we didn't even have a boys or girls golf team until my senior year
bichon, that makes me think of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and I absolutely believe you about that. :D
Jewish girls went to college to become school teachers.
Have you heard of Mrs. Maisel?
when they married and had children, they always had a profession to go back to
Our gym teacher was quite old, but very fit. I don’t know how old she was back then, but she must have been in her early 60’s; & she taught at least another 5 years after that ( looking back at my siblings’ yearbooks, anyway.)
No, have to google it
It's a tv show on Amazon Prime about a twenty something Jewish woman in NYC in the 50s who becomes a stand-up comedian
It's definitely R-rated but hilarious
Sadly, don't have Prime [have Netflix and Hulu]
homie, my hometown had one of the best golf courses around that area. It had been started back in the ‘20’s or 30’s (whenever golf was the big rage); it’s still the best one in that region.
hokie, Not homie,
my school didn't add soccer until the 2000s, small town living
LOL, I was thinking it was nice you consider me your homie
LOL!!!
well, now I've hit a wall with the list. bbl for last 15!
last word to 6/21, second one, pls
Sorry,bichon, I don’t have it & haven’t listed yet.
compound word: male cat + raunchy word for female anatomy
and now I'm out again!
Thanks, hokie!

whatever has become of Minveryork? was just thinking about the stories she writes using the words in the grid.
she comes by on an irregular basis now, rbud. She moved and has a much longer commute to work, I think, but I could be wrong.
ah, thanks for the info. running back and forth to the kitchen, working on supper.
well, that's me done, see y'all later! :)
