I don't know anyone here who still writes or receives cheques, it is all done on-line now and has been for about 5 years. Very little cash around too.
Well, I have to write a check to my cleaning lady and I get a check occasionally for interest on my rent. My sister also sends me a check for my birthday :)
I think the only occasions when cash is used to pay for services here is when it is "under the table' ie to avoid tax or similar
I write checks to the handyman/gardener. I almost never have more than $20 cash on me.
Boy, I am having a hard time with this grid. Not even halfway yet.
I write checks to service people too, like the plumber, or anyone else who does work for me. I carry around a certain amount of cash and pay for some things that way.
Oh, I also write checks for my co-pay at the doctor's offices. I don't use credit cards very often.
EFTPOS via card (but not usually credit cards) is the norm here. EFTPOS payments via phone and even watches becoming even more common.

I'm with you on Walmart, Molly. The one closest to me is in the ghetto and is an absolute hell hole. I once had to go there for something and watched a man start to strangle the woman with him in the line ahead of me. Nobody did anything until I yelled at him to stop. I'm lucky I didn't get knifed.
Molly - there are lots of fires in Australia right now. We have smoke haze where we live. Nearest fire is about 30 km from us - but we're not in dange.
That is our Walmart, origami. I try not to shop there.
