If we learn nothing else from this virus experience, I hope it is this. Companies need to get real about paid sick leave. Many people go to work sick because they can't afford unpaid time off. And that is a major contributor to how disease spreads.

5:02 am

you are absolutely right Molly, well said.

5:02 am

you are absolutely right Molly, well said.

5:03 am

Even here in France where we do have okay sick leave, there’s a delay where you’re not entitled to anything. For a lot of people that’s 3 days. If you’re off less than that, no paid leave. More than that and those first days aren’t paid.

5:04 am

People seem to have lost the common sense to stay home when they are sick. I see people in the grocery store all the time who are obviously suffering from some respiratory ailment. I always hope it is just allergies.

5:05 am

Many companies do not extend paid leave for 90 days. What? People are supposed to magically not be sick for those 90 days?

5:14 am

Most small businesses are running on thin margins. Where is the money going to come from if you have to pay employees who are too sick to work?

5:29 am

Here it’s social security that pays for sick leave. That’s what it’s there for, taking care of you when you’re ill

6:01 am

good morning all

6:06 am

Hi peri.

6:37 am

Morning, friends. Nive size grid today.

6:52 am

The grocery store was insane this morning. Empty bins in the produce section (no broccoli), empty shelves everywhere (not just the toilet paper)

6:53 am

The UK is the Same, not sure why everyone is panic buying. Home delivery are still taking place.

6:54 am

Costco had things, but the shelves had an empty look

6:54 am

Home delivery is just as sparse as regular shopping. The people who do the delivering are picking from the same shelves you are.

6:54 am

Costco must be creepy looking with an "empty look"

6:55 am

We have where houses dedicated to online shopper such as Ocado. Amazon also have huge ware houses over the county, Food is still being produced and entering the country, I realy dont understand it.!

6:55 am

Some Costcos and BJ's had lines out the door

6:56 am

The people who aer totally screwed are the people who live paycheck to paycheck and don't have extra money to shell out for stocking up on things

6:57 am

Are...pardon me...not enough coffee this morning. And yes, the coffee shelf was pretty empty as well.

6:58 am

Our elderly will also struggle as they get their money weekly and live week to week.

7:08 am

People need to look out for each other. If you have a disabled or elderly neighbor, see how you can help them.

Here, Walmart aisles were empty, but local grocery is well stocked

7:30 am

I want to go buy six cases of vodka and then start a rumor that drinking vodka prevents getting corona virus. Then sit on the side of the road selling bottles of vodka for 100 dollars a piece. : D

7:31 am

You would fit right in to our neighborhood.

7:38 am

This is not an easy grid...

7:46 am

'morning, babblers

7:47 am

Good morning, welki.

7:47 am

I had hoped to get home delivery from WF but they've discontinued it due to demand. Make sense? Too many people want it so no one gets it. I guess that's "fair"...

7:48 am

What is WF?

7:48 am

home delivery's been suspended from most places here

7:48 am

I do think the panic stems from the realization that something we've all taken for granted - ready availability of food - may no longer be the case.

7:48 am

WF Whole Foods, sorry.

7:49 am

Got it.

7:49 am

The suspension of home delivery will really make things tough for those of us not gifted with youth and health

7:50 am

There is also a theory that buying big item like loo paper makes you feel like your back in power!

7:51 am

I still say, buy a bidet attachment. Loo paper is horribly bad for the planet (they're cutting down virgin forest in Canada to manufacture it) and doesn't even do a very good job!

7:52 am

We spent $50 at Home Depot on a Brondell FreshSpa last year. No electric, no plumber needed. Love it!

7:52 am

Is that a hose attachment, Natasha?

7:54 am

It attaches under the toilet seat and you hook it up to the cold (and some models, hot water under the sink if the toilet is close enough). It sprays your bum and has a dial to control temp (if you have hot/cold) and water pressure (some like it gentle, some less so). Basically you take a shower without getting in the shower.

7:54 am

Go on Youtube and search on bidet, or Brondell, or Tushy to see how these things operate.

7:55 am

Thanks. I will.

7:55 am

There are very very fancy whole-seat models with heated seats and lights that play Bach or the Beatles (kidding), but those need electric power and cost $500 or more

7:56 am

Try to get one with dual temp. "Ambient temp" is fine in warmer weather but on a cold morning in January you might prefer to mix in a bit of warm water. However you do need to have your hot water source (sink) close enough to the toilet for that to work.

8:02 am

8:16 am

owl do you have any books at home you haven't read at all?

8:16 am

hello all! the 2bit family have returned from our African sojourn. We are not infected (at least as of Monday, thanks to the Egyptian Health Ministry), and very grateful to be back, despite the panic

8:16 am

natasha Does kindle have a lot of free books to read?

no but and i've been cleaning out what i do have. time for the classics i guess

8:17 am

War and Peace or Anna Karenina (my personal faves) can keep a body going for yonks

8:17 am

Everyone needs to get outside and get fresh air and sunshine today....Well, everyday, but especially today.

8:17 am

owl sounds like fun:)

our county's cases began with a pediatric cardiologist who visited egypt and saw patients for four days before being rushed to intensive care. he and his wife are still critical.

8:18 am

Via Kindle you can borrow digital books from your local library. IF your library subscribes to it, you can also watch great films and documentaries via their free Kanopy site.

8:18 am

Glad you are backsafe and sound, dan. I'm sure you had a wonderful time.

8:18 am

Oh geez Dan that is awful. Glad you and yours are safe.

showing that early symptoms are mild or non existent

8:18 am

bzz hubby and i went outside day before yesterday. supposed to rain today but probably later

tali

8:19 am

i found a 7:)

8:19 am

Which is why I DO NOT GET why Trump and other world leaders who've been exposed aren't getting tested "because I'm not showing symptoms" DUH you can be a carrier for days prior to becoming symptomatic.

8:19 am

I use my public libraries app to downlaod books all the time. Haven't been to the library in a long time.

who knows? they may have been.

8:20 am

bzz when hubby and i first got here when got a library card and looked around for a bit. Haven't used it since

it is time for me to do something. meant to and now it's too late, time flies.

8:21 am

TO wow. We were quarantined one morning because we were on a downstream version of the upstream Nile river cruise where the whole boat got infected - they went through and swabbed all the passengers before we could disembark

8:21 am

natasha he isn't shewing symptoms, but he got tested yesterday or today

i think i will focus my concern in myself and my family and friends. i really couldn't give a rat's ass if they were or wer not tested.

8:21 am

owl meant to do what?

8:22 am

I do give a rat's ass because he keeps standing close to Anthony Fauci.

8:22 am

bzz, i was nervous watching him on tv yesterday, he kept shaking people's hands

okie dokie, time to go.

8:22 am

bye owl.

8:23 am

Third column m stats pls?

8:23 am

natasha, i use my library to download books, too - i use Libby, but some e-readers come with Overdrive installed

8:23 am

later, owl

catch you later, welk. you know the drill

8:23 am

Yes, I have Overdrive also

8:23 am

yes, yes i do :)

8:23 am

I use overdrive.

8:24 am

mi5.14, mlf

8:24 am

MLF, I don't get why you were nervous seeing Trump shake hands. Didn't you say you go to Walmart and don't use the sanitizer wipes before shopping?

8:24 am

help with the 8 pls. I use overdrive as well

8:25 am

ta8.45

8:25 am

it's a compound peri

8:25 am

I know the stats just not seeing the word

8:25 am

It is a copound?

8:26 am

compound

8:26 am

I thought it might be a compound. looking

8:26 am

i just wheel around

8:26 am

but i understand

8:26 am

It is an object thought to have maigical powers.

8:26 am

maybe compound is the wrong term for it but it involves a common ending for compound words...

8:27 am

there ya go, bea nailed it

8:27 am

well, the ta 8 is not a flower guy *lol*

8:27 am

ah ty ty Bea and Natasha

8:27 am

We touch dozens to a hundred things a day without sanitizing first. Door knobs and handles, payment machines, shopping carts, elevator buttons. If something is that contagious, we are all doomed.

8:28 am

does it begin with what some animals wag?

8:28 am

It is that contagious which is why the prediction is that 30-70% will get it

8:28 am

No, mlf

8:28 am

ty bea

8:29 am

oh not that easy bzz?lol

8:30 am

clue the mi 5/14 pls?

8:31 am

like something really tinyscopic with a different vowel at the end

8:32 am

ty welk

8:32 am

I read a lot of historical fiction. One of the books I read not long ago was set in Philadelphia during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. While I am reading the fiction, I read a lot of non-fiction about the time, events even what the fashion was during the time.

8:32 am

nbt

8:32 am

i do that, too, bea - but i look of the art and music of the period

8:33 am

Did you read the John Barry book about that Bea? Really interesting if terrifying

8:33 am

look up, not of

8:33 am

I only have ou7 help with other 7s pls

8:34 am

It was interesting to find that just before the outbreak in Philadelphia, they had a huge parade. Most people were infected then.

8:34 am

Yes, that's why they had to shovel bodies into pits in Philly...

8:34 am

peri that is the only one i have too

8:34 am

Which is why I am so happy they canned the St. Patrick's Day parade in NYC

8:34 am

At the same time in St. Louis, they canceled their parade an had fewer cases and deaths.

8:35 am

Yes, exactly Bea! Social distancing WORKS.

8:35 am

up7.36

8:35 am

I know there is up7 ad fu7 but not seeing them

8:35 am

ty bzz

8:35 am

don't know first two letters of last 7

8:36 am

You might want to go to the second story for the up7

8:36 am

which I never knew could be used in a singular form

8:36 am

ty for up7 thought it ended in an s

8:37 am

Me either, Natash. Always bugs me.

8:37 am

natasha i was just about to say doesn't it end in s?

8:37 am

i am not getting the 8?

8:38 am

need to keep an open mind about this as about so many things right now...

8:38 am

bea clued it below Mlfan

8:38 am

an item that is thought to have magical powers

8:38 am

bbl reading American Dirt

8:39 am

In the 1918 pandemic, they also found that those who hid away in their houses to avoid the virus, often died from it. Those that got out and got fresh air and sunshine on a regular basis were less likely to get the virus.

8:40 am

A good way to use clues is to type them into a Google search and add the word "crossword". The ta8 comes right up

8:40 am

Yikes, forgot that. Well, we still go to the dog park every day, keeping a nice distance of course from any other visitors

8:41 am

I agree, Bea. I am a firm believer in fresh air and sunshine for healthy humans. People are indoors way too much.

8:41 am

Viruses like cold, dry air to keep alive. Sunshine kills viruses.

8:41 am

Also forced air heating and cooling does nothing good for your lungs

8:42 am

Not to mention that sunshine improves your mood. A happy person is a well person.

8:43 am

Everything here (outside DC) is in full bloom - magnolias, daffodils, forsythia. Haven't checked CherryBlossom cam yet but imagine they're well along.

8:44 am

My mom has COPD. We are very cautious with her around. I have not let her get out in public for over a month just because of the Type A flu. But, she sits outside on days the sun is shining even if she has to wrap in a coat an blanket.

8:45 am

Get some fresh air and sunshine, folks. I'm done with my PSA for today =)

I live in England. Sunshine is in short supply ;)

8:47 am

But even if there is clou cover, you can still benefit.

8:50 am

It's -20C here right now - even the dog doesn't want to go outside *lol*

8:50 am

oooh brrrr

8:50 am

Well, yes...there is that exception. =)

8:50 am

Oh Natasha, haven't you heard? All the cherry blossom festivities will probably be cancelled as well.

8:51 am

Yes of course they will but there used to be a live cam feed so you could see them remotely

8:51 am

Can't seem to find that now however. Maybe it got turned off due to budget cuts

8:51 am

NPS reports 70% bloom

8:52 am

And we have a huge St. Patrick's Day party that takes place at the University, people come from all over. The police as telling them to stay home, but they won't. Getting drunk is more important.

8:52 am

Not sure how they'll keep people from congregating around the Tidal Basin though. Hope folks are smart enough to give it a miss this year

8:52 am

our neighborhood has a few Yoshinos in it, just a few miles inland from the Tidal Basin - they are well along

8:53 am

Are you over in Kenwood dan?

8:56 am

Falls Church, near Lake Barcroft

8:59 am

Got it! bbl. I'm about to attend my synagogue's virtual Shabbat services on Zoom.

9:13 am

Virtual church, we really are living in the quarantine age

9:36 am

our church is beginning this Sunday offering streaming online services for those who want it

9:56 am

TY

9:57 am

hey scrabs - how're you holding up?

9:59 am

Right now = bad migraine. Overall, so much uncertainty. I need to keep my 88 year old mother safe, I need to not be ill or quarantined, I need to keep my patients safe and well.

10:00 am

I'm sure you are overwhelmed. I've been thinking about you.

10:01 am

hi all. any clues for the 8 or 7s? ty. sorry to take you away from the other discussions.

10:01 am

I read the updated CDC info every day.

ta 8/45 is a good luck charm

10:01 am

10:18 am

mr. homie is back on Mon, I think

10:20 am

8:20 am and grocery shopping done, put away and tea made - that has to be a record for me!

10:20 am

good morning, all :)

10:20 am

unless they check prices to see if they can come back Sun.

10:21 am

Good for you, Nan. By the time I get to the supermarket there will probably be no food.

10:21 am

I went yesterday morning. most food products were still there.

10:22 am

I hope the shelves were restocked.

10:22 am

I bought eggs and then came home and saw I already have an extra eggs. so now I have like 3 dozen eggs.

10:22 am

eggs keep for a long time - omelets forever!

10:22 am

Lots of omelets for you...or baked goods.

10:22 am

I did go in yesterday on my way home, Scrabs - most of the shelves were empty. Even at 7:30 am there was a 20 person line-up at the check out.

10:23 am

yep, plus I buy pasteurized and they last longer

10:23 am

plan to do some baking as well

10:23 am

*7:30 this morning, that is

10:23 am

^5 scrabs

10:23 am

were you shell-shocked hokie?

10:23 am

I think I cracked under the food shopping pressure

10:24 am

i bake a lot of bread - when i went shopping yesterday, all the white flour was gone, all that was left were huge bags of multigrain (which is fine with me)

10:24 am

i think a lot of people are scrambling for eggs

10:25 am

You have beat me to the best puns

10:25 am

I don't understand all this stock piling -- if you are in isolation, you can just pick up the phone to call in your order and when it is ready, a stock person will bring it out to your car and load it in the trunk.

10:25 am

True, Nan.

10:26 am

now we aren't sure you'll soufle hokie

10:26 am

here, the store pick ups have been suspended

10:27 am

I hope the snowbirds realize that they will be asked to go into self-imposed isolation for 2 weeks on their return and should buy their groceries before they cross the line.

i am scrambling to figure out what to do for exercise now that gyms are closed.

10:27 am

alcohol, owl. exercise that elbow.

10:27 am

I think some stores have suspended here too.

10:27 am

:D welki

10:28 am

I fear that my YMCA will close. It is such a viral place for families and kids to play.

funny...this county is shut down, yet food lines are minimal.

10:28 am

there are exercise programs that you can work out with on you tube

10:28 am

Got to youtube, owl. All kinds of exercise you can do.

all gyms, consert venues, theaters, schools and non esential retail are closed.

10:28 am

Get out an walk for 30 minutes.

10:29 am

vital and viral, scrabs

10:29 am

I'm canceling my trip to see grandkids in CA next month

i am sure, bea, but one has to maintian the level one has. just walking and lifting a few one pound cans will not do.

10:29 am

worst part about early morning shopping, I discovered, is that the wine shop doesn't open until 9:00 am

i canno trun, dr's orders

10:30 am

Well, it is better than just sitting there doing nothing and worrying about it.

10:32 am

Hahaha, I am laughing at my typo, welki!

that would be true if i WERE just sitting around. you don''t know me; if you did you would know i am onw of the most active persons you'd know

10:33 am

Good morning, folks

10:33 am

Hi origami

10:35 am

i'm doing 50 miles a week on my bike.. that's helping me

10:35 am

hi ori

10:36 am

hey welk, where's the bunny when we need her?

10:36 am

Hi ru - that's a lot of miles

10:36 am

hi origami, scrabs, ru

10:36 am

10:36 am

Hiya bichon

hi hursh

10:37 am

Hi hurshy

10:37 am

i might have the thing

10:38 am

i can't run either bad knees but biking and swimming are good for me

10:38 am

what ? really hursh

10:38 am

Oh, no hursh

10:38 am

Our snow is almost gone. I hiked with microspikes last weekend on icy trails.

10:38 am

well it started with a cough and i thought hopefully it is just a cold but now i do have a slight fever

10:38 am

Uh, oh, Hurshy.

10:39 am

can you get tested soon hursh

10:39 am

i doubt it ru, and i am not old enough to be worried, i have no underlying conditions, am very healthy in general

10:39 am

i just need to not spread it

10:39 am

How poorly do you feel?

i don't like swimming. i do pump - full body weight workout- and youga and zumba. i am so bummed that all my side gigs volunteering are suspended.

10:39 am

so are you self-isolating then?

10:39 am

yeah

10:40 am

the test is nasty it goes up the nose to the back of the throat.

10:40 am

i hope dr g santitizes the chat later :D

sorry to hear this, hursh. have you called your doctor?

10:40 am

but the fact that i have it means it's already in other people in my town, as i haven't had contact with anyone with known case or travel or anything

10:40 am

I hope whatever it is, you are over it soon

10:40 am

owl, can you do those exercise routines with videos?

10:40 am

i'm not worried about myself

10:41 am

here's hoping you just have a mild flu, and not covid19

10:41 am

hi welki -- good pic of the 3 sisters

10:41 am

well i had a flu shot in the fall

10:41 am

but i suppose there could be a new mutation

10:41 am

thanks

naw, still using crap notebook. btw anyone try FB today? what is it's problem?

10:42 am

i've had no problem with fb

10:42 am

I think the flu shot wasn't effective against the flu strains out this year

10:42 am

hope you feel better soon, hurshy

and for the good news of the day- it's PI DAY!!!

10:42 am

Hopefully just a col, hurshy

10:42 am

but tomorrow is the Ides of March lol

10:42 am

*cold

10:43 am

hmm, what kind of pie should I make

10:43 am

*teleports her wii to owl* ---lord knows all it does here is collect dust

10:43 am

apple

10:43 am

10:43 am

I'm making cheese and onion pie.

10:44 am

never had that bea

10:44 am

well, I did buy a bag of honey crisp yesterday. not sure how good that would be. also will have to make a GF crust from scratch as I don't have any premade.

10:44 am

Yummy!

10:44 am

I'm eating leftover GF pizza right now, guess I could count that

10:45 am

Is that a quiche bea?

just saw a lovely banan cream pie made on good morning america

10:45 am

Yes, that is certainly a pie.

10:45 am

i wish i could bake.. i suck at it

10:45 am

banoffee pie!!!

10:45 am

No, it is a savory two crust pie.

10:45 am

10:46 am

10:46 am

10:47 am

tu + small being verb

10:47 am

Mmm, I love savory pies. Sounds good Bea.

10:48 am

I also do a lot of galettes. Both savory and sweet.

10:48 am

I love baking and I've never even heard of that

10:48 am

i'm stopping with sugar now.. pies are out.

10:49 am

You have never heard of a galette?

10:49 am

how about a chess pie, hokie?

10:49 am

lol, I have Murder, She Wrote on and Robert Stack is playing one of the characters. as someone who grew up watching Unsolved Mysteries, it's just weird hearing him.

10:49 am

you can only eat chess pie at knight

10:50 am

In Prague. Czech ,mate,

10:50 am

does chess pie have cream cheese? I don't have any of that on hand. my mom made chess squares all the time, they were what paula deen calls ooey gooey butter cakes

10:51 am

chess pie do people pawn all over them?

i love chess pie. no cream cheese

10:52 am

no, no cream cheese - it's a custard

10:52 am

So the drink of the day is a Quarantini. Just like a martini but you drink it alone...

no cheese at all in chess pie. if you want to make one, look up Gle Gand's recipe. it's the bomb

10:52 am

i had a martini yesterday.. just what the dr ordered

10:52 am

I'll have to check a recipe out for that.

GALE GAND. sorry

10:53 am

morning everyone!

10:53 am

morning, jan

10:53 am

I love a dirty martini.

hurshy, have you called your doctor?

10:53 am

10:55 am

i like a martini with spicy olives - bombay saphhire

10:55 am

10:55 am

I have 104 left for later ;)

10:56 am

10:56 am

i love a good martini.

10:57 am

10:57 am

10:58 am

it's raining here.. i'm just going to finish my taxes today

10:58 am

i like greylock gin...cant find it in canada tho so i try to take a couple bottles back after US visits

10:58 am

there's a local botanical called lovebird - on the list of things i want to try, but probably never will. now i can put 'botanist' on there, too (do i resist change? nooooo - yesssss)

10:59 am

(the botanist makes the BEST G & T also)

11:00 am

and i just happened to buy some tonic the other day - and have a bunch of limes

hurshy, call the doctor and monitor your temp. i hope you feel better. whatever you have it sound miserable.

11:00 am

gin and tonic is my drink of choice.

11:00 am

bye all. i am going to wash linens and hand them on the line. love that fresh smell. later.

11:06 am

bye TO

11:08 am

India I love gin and tonic

11:09 am

I like Coke Zero

11:10 am

I didn't read anything specific just the headline of different webpages. Kelly Rpa was having Botox done(as usual) and was siting there making jokes about the virus

11:13 am

I like, like, like Hendrick's even though I rarely have any. Gin & tonic, salty dog all great drinks for a sit in the sun. Today it is 33 F so I will have a glass of red wine with diner and plan my summer garden.

11:14 am

i could see it with a cucumber lime gin drink.. that would work.. it just wasn't dry enough for my palate though

11:15 am

its 82F here already...

11:15 am

so there are some GT’s planned for later

11:17 am

gin and tonic is my drink of choice as well. I like regular Bombay

11:26 am

Native American currency, Peri.

11:27 am

ty all

11:28 am

I think he though you were going to throw a fit about the word, Nan. : D

11:30 am

no - I just throw fits about words that are not recognized english or poor english. Biggest bugbear right now is adding ed to nouns

11:31 am

You must love today's cr4 ;)

11:33 am

getting frustrated with his one - off to the list

11:38 am

cr4: (plural of) a loud utterance; often in protest or opposition

11:45 am

damn, damn, damn, my library is closed !!

11:46 am

is tjhis corona crap really worse than other viruses ??

11:47 am

screw the penalty box... this old lady is maaaaaad

11:48 am

Think we're going to get used to a whole lot of inconveniences

11:48 am

From what I've read from health professionals, it is somewhat worse. But the main problem is that when it gets out of control it overwhelms the area's hospitals. People die because they need ventilators or other lifesaving equipment and there are not enough available. So the idea is to separate people to slow the spread and help the health care system's ability to help those who are sick.

11:48 am

I wonder how many people die every year of ordinary flu and pneumonia without having this pnic

11:49 am

It's a completely new virus, no-one has any immunity to it. The lockdowns are to prevent it spreading so that it doesn't affect older people who will take a more severe form which could be life-threatening.

11:49 am

we cant get a doctors appointment now they arent doing 'face to face'.

11:50 am

i do believe ther media hype is a form lf terrorism

11:50 am

I agree SMom.

11:51 am

Doctors aren't doing face to face to prevent them from possibly becoming infected and then passing it on.

11:53 am

That hasn't happened here, yet. Never would have believed that schools would be closed

11:53 am

su 5/18, pls

11:53 am

The real test is going to be getting people to stay home. Most people are used to being constantly on the go. Here, schools and daycare are closed for two weeks. There are going to be a lot of stir crazy kids and parents pretty soon.

11:54 am

My doctors office sent out a notice asking people to call first. They are trying to limit their face to face contact and rightfully so.

11:55 am

They aren't doing face to face until they have reason to think the person doesn't just have normal flu or cold symptoms, which are different - again, to help prevent the system being overwhelmed. If we care about each other, we need to agree to being shut down in every way possible, not to prevent the spread but to slow it to a manageable pace. Most of us will get it, but many more will die if we let it just happen with no controls. I hate my library and my church and many other things being closed, but I'm trying to take the long view.

11:56 am

I think the same thing is happening here - normally one has to make an appointment to get a prescription renewal -- yesterday, I just phoned in and the Doc sent the renewal over to the pharmacy for me

11:56 am

if places are closed now for two weeks what will happen at the end of those two weeks? A miracle cure? Everyone better?

11:57 am

The aim of shutdown is to try to contain transmission so that the health service isn't overwhelmed. Read up on 'Flatten the curve' to see what they mean. And it's not dieting tips.

11:57 am

I'm afraid schools will be closed for the rest of the year

11:57 am

hopefully it will slow the spread of the disease down deeha -- my understanding is that it more easily spread than the flu

11:58 am

Information is readily available online, it will help to read it and then understand what is happening.

11:58 am

I live on Whidbey Island, WA. We can call local hospital with symptoms, hospital will advise if virus is suspect, then there is a drive thru for the swabbing. Test results 7-10 days

11:58 am

our schools are closed for march break right now and undergoing thorough cleanings -- I wouldn't be surprised to hear at the end of the week that school closures have been extended.

12:00 pm

Pastor J, good advice.

12:00 pm

I'm surprised Whidbey hasn't sealed itself off from Seattle!

12:01 pm

We've had it here for nearly three weeks

12:01 pm

They're going to have to have on line school

12:02 pm

oh -- didn't know that - we have friends who live there that we met on a cruise 10 years ago -- will have to send a note and see how they are doing.

12:03 pm

I'm in the high risk category so I'm doing the self imposed quarantine, interesting experience - sneak out early for perishables, so far so good.

12:04 pm

yes and obiously they are in the same age category

12:04 pm

My sister is a GP & saw her first case yesterday. A heretofore very fit & healthy 22 yr old. My sister (a very level-headed person) was aghast at the severity of this patient’s symptoms.

12:04 pm

What happened on the cruise ships that were quarantined with confirmed Covid19 aboard? Does anyone know? I can't find any coherent info.

12:05 pm

I's scary to young people so sick. 'm 73 and scared

12:06 pm

everyone has either been hospitalized or sent to quarantine on army bases, depending on their test results

12:06 pm

went to my supermarket today. Aisle of tin veg compltely empty. Who would ever have thought of a supermarket running out of red kidney beans!! I bet people that have never eaten a tinned vegetable in their lives are stocking up. Whats it all about? How long do they think they will 'self isolate. And what is it about toilet Rolls?!!

12:07 pm

I don't think the crew of the ship that docked at Oaklands is being allowed to leave the ship

12:08 pm

lol - I think everyone is making chili! - almost out of kidney beans, diced tomatoes and corn here as well

12:08 pm

perhaps thats why they need the toilet rolls!!

12:10 pm

Most supermarket chains here & in the UK had stockpiled vast quantities of produce in case there was a hard crash-out Brexit. Silver linings....

12:12 pm

An article I read recently said the toilet paper shortage should be short lived. Supply = demand and all that.

12:13 pm

/

12:14 pm

I normally buy only fresh vegetables. But when I went to the store this morning and the fresh produce was depleted (no carrots, no broccoli, no cabbage...the weekend before St. Patrick's Day) I bought some canned and frozen vegetables.

12:15 pm

Luckily, when I tried another store, they had cabbage. So we will have corned beef with the usual trimmings on Tuesday.

12:15 pm

Our friend Ruby tells me she is very poorly. She hasn’t left her bedroom in two weeks. She seems very low. I’m sure a prayer, good thought etc would be appreciated.

12:16 pm

ty for passing that on, soodle

12:16 pm

Oh, God bless our Ruby. Prayers and good thoughts going out for her.

12:17 pm

my brother once asked if I liked corned beef? I said no. He said 'I used to hit you during the war if you didnt eat your corned beef'.Thats probably why I dont like it. I associate with a beating!!!

12:23 pm

Greetings, all. Thanks for posting about Ruby, Soodle. I was thinking of her yesterday. Prayers forthcoming.

12:30 pm

While I don't post often, my best wishes go out to Ruby. She is a cherished member of this community. Ruby, I hope you feel better soon!

12:37 pm

my concerns about schools closing are what is going to happen to the children qualify for free meals (how/what will they eat) and how are parents going to stay home from work with them (and still get paid) if they can't telework? I think they should be cautious when making the choice to shut down schools and not have knee jerk reactions. We already have (I think) 12 districts in our state that have shut down and 3 cases (last I checked) of the virus statewide. I know that some schools have extended spring break (hopefully for the same reason stated earlier, a good sanitizing scrub of facilities) but I do hope administrators weigh the impacts carefully before making a decision. There a lot of special needs children who will suffer because of knee jerk reactions... *off my soapbox* Thanks for the 411 on Ruby, Soodle. Please share if you hear of any changes. I hope she can pull herself out of her funk but I know when one can't do what they usually do (and feel like poop) it's easy to sit in a corner in the dark...

12:38 pm

sorry for the book.

12:38 pm

That is a concern, amelu. Hopefullyt he food banks are stocked up and can fill the needs of the families with school children who rely on school meals.

12:38 pm

all very well to 'deep clean' schools - all goes out the window when the grubby little kids come back in???

12:39 pm

I have the same concerns Amelu. Employers are not going to pay people for extended periods where their kids have no school and no childcare. The economic impact of that is going to be huge.

12:39 pm

Corona Virus is especially dangerous to young children and elderly people. I can see closing down elementary and middle schools. High schools? Not so much.

12:40 pm

FMLA is great and all that but one has to use available leave first, then go w/o pay.

12:41 pm

States that are deciding to close schools need to take those kids who depend on school food into consideration. But I don't think they did.

12:42 pm

No income + no food is going to = chaos sooner than later.

12:45 pm

food bank supplies are down here -- people too busy stocking their own larders! Thank goodness for people like Jim Pattison who step up and donate truckloads of food from their stores.

12:47 pm

Help they neighbors, people. Spare some squares.

12:48 pm

If there was ever a time to look out for each other, it is now. I am sickened by the social media photos I see of people sitting on a throne they built out of boxes of hoarded toilet paper.

12:49 pm

I can speak for Colorado only, but school districts here are offering meals, no vouchers required. They are offered to go and are available by drive-by. Paid sick leave bill had been passed. I'm in the high risk category and my husband, with two blood cancers, in the very high risk category, so I"m deeply grateful for all those observing social distancing, and flattening the curve.

12:49 pm

12:50 pm

12:50 pm

12:51 pm

no problem miranda. glad you are around folks who are taking it seriously!

12:51 pm

wow good old Colorado. All my American family live there. Nice to know they live in a caring State

12:52 pm

My area also has a plan for meals and paid leave. Just listened to the White House Coronavirus task force update. A statement was made to lean into the facts, prioritize and 'no more bickering!'

12:52 pm

i know right molly. the TP hoarding thing doesn't even make sense, it's just a herd mentality thing

12:53 pm

I will speak for Montgomery County in Maryland. They will have grab and go lunches at Elem, Middle and High schools for any child 18 and under. As for the hourly / seasonal employees they will be paid for loss time.

12:58 pm

1:53 pm

maybe I should say "Pretty Woman" - the movie, not the song, haha!

2:43 pm

I have tried everything for the tu and still can't get it. another clue?

2:51 pm

2:51 pm

if pet transmission is even possible, it seems a better idea to keep them with you instead of exposing them to more people and animals

2:54 pm

do you have any congestion in the lungs hurshy?

2:54 pm

sorry nan don't have it yet

2:54 pm

Well the caronavirus started out in animals first then jumped across to human contamination. So I would assume pets can catch it too.

2:56 pm

i misspoke, zooz - i meant it is possible, hasn't been confirmed yet. hursh is worried about her pets.

2:57 pm

I saw an article earlier that a pug in Italy tested positive - the owner had it. The dog didn't show any symptoms though.

2:57 pm

didn't it start with contaminated bats in a Wuhan market? - not surprising having seen some of those Chinese markets

3:02 pm

finishing the grid is a great plan

3:04 pm

Yes, but there were a couple other things on the list.

3:04 pm

well can't do them now, gotta go to the pb ;)

3:05 pm

Great! They are serving Quarantinis in there...

3:06 pm

warm whisky?

3:06 pm

Hursh, have you called your doctor? My doctors office has asked that people call in if they suspect they have the virus.

3:06 pm

my elderly sober father always tells me to take a shot of whiskey if i'm feeling sick lol

3:06 pm

Quantinis, good one Bea. : D

3:07 pm

Martinis served in isolation. =)

3:07 pm

Liquor is great for ridding the system of what doesn't need to be there. : D

3:08 pm

My mom used to give us hot toddys when we had terrible colds. Warm orange juice laced heavily with what vodka or bourbon. I remember having it when I was ten.

3:09 pm

LOL, Molly! A friend at the pub in which I hang out said much the same. She said 'We drink too much alcohol to be sick! That bug would try to hit us and turn around and run!'

3:10 pm

I have a recipe for hand sanitizer that calls for essential oils and Everclear.

3:11 pm

My bartender made that yesterday for herself for work! Why go with 90% alcohol when you can 190%, lol.

3:12 pm

Just don't rub your eyes after you use it!

3:12 pm

Anything over 60% alcohol will kill the virus so I have heard.

3:13 pm

well, i guess, for science

3:13 pm

Bacardi 151 for everyone!

3:14 pm

My sister and dad are having a shot of whisky in there coke once a day. To keep the virus away so they have told themselves lol

3:14 pm

Seriously Hursh, if you think you have the virus, call your doctor. But remember, there are all kinds of upper respiratory infections.

Nice to see you. It's been a while.

3:27 pm

congrats zooz!

3:28 pm

indeed. being that I am now off school for two weeks, minimum, hopefully I will have more babble time!

3:29 pm

Crazy times, isn't it? How are you children doing?

3:30 pm

they are fine. one working from her apartment, one home from college, one the only person going to his workplace.

it seems i have worked this grid for hours and still need 71

3:31 pm

actually, primo dodged a HUGE bullet last night, for which I am profoundly grateful. He lives in a complex made up of old factory buildings. Last night the one next time to him caught fire and burned to the ground. His building was spared. It was SCARY.

3:32 pm

oh no!

oh my!

3:32 pm

OMG! That is scary! Glad he is safe.

those old converted buildings are cool but i sometimes wonder

3:33 pm

really scary. And, since it was in Rhode Island, HIGHLY suspicious - apparently the (empty, thank god) building sold last week for a "record price" -- and burned to the ground days later? Hmmmmmm

is RI a hotbed of arson for profit?

3:33 pm

That is interesting...

3:34 pm

TO i am enjoying your pic! did you take it?

no, i would be happy if the virus would kill them off. and the squirrels, too. they will now probably take over the world. or at least my yard. :D

3:36 pm

back again -- will finish this sometime today

3:36 pm

I have 7 left, nan.

glad to hear he is ok, trif. scary indeed.

3:38 pm

lets hope they can't catch it TO - I think they are infesting every yard in the country - and just think - another month and there will be new little bambis running around

3:38 pm

Oh, I would be sad if deer got killed off. The hunters are bad enough.

3:39 pm

thanks everyone. Rhode Island is just.....oh, it never changes. For a start, they have the finest politicians money can buy. It all goes from there.

3:39 pm

you obviously don't have deer camping out in your yard and eating your veggies, Molly

3:39 pm

We are the ones invading the deers space.

i know. they are just rampant here. the squireels, howver... the only thing that seems to scare them off is my recording od a dalek.

4:39 pm

good morning everyone. sad news about our beloved ruby. she has become too weak to move from her bed. she tells me she thinks she has 6-12 months. she is unable to communicate properly too. if you have her email please don't expect an answer.

4:42 pm

her pain is well controlled. i do not know about her pups. didn't want to push her with too many questions. soodle received a similar response to me wherein Ruby says goodbye.

4:43 pm

Sending big love to Ruby. She is one of the best people I have "met" on the internet.

4:46 pm

oh poor ruby! She is SUCH a treasure. I am sorry to read this news.

4:50 pm

anyone wishing to send a message to Ruby could first send it to me. i will then combine them into one email for Ruby to read.

5:01 pm

it is Sunday morning here and i have an appointment with the Big Guy above. i will check in when i come home. please pass the news along. i just thought that a combined email would be like a great big Get Well card for Ruby. it might lift her spirit if she knows how much she is loved and honoured here in Babbleland.

5:02 pm

not getting the mi 6 word to not hit the bulls eye. clue please?

5:18 pm

hello all....

5:24 pm

Hi stidmama. Are you healthy? (Kind of the new greeting here in Washington state ;)

5:25 pm

LOL yes, ch, I am well - Tom has a bit of a sniffle though (he was fine yesterday morning...), so we are self-isolating atm

5:25 pm

you?

5:25 pm

I am sad schools are closing, I will miss my students!!!!

5:26 pm

We're self isolating too. My beloved works at a library, and they are all closed now, along with all schools.

5:26 pm

Good thing for babble and streaming videos, eh?

5:28 pm

Oh YES. And books, of course. Husband is out in the yard, working on xeriscaping it. He'd planned to start later in the year, but has the time now.

5:28 pm

How many cases in your county?

5:29 pm

Yep. In between doing whatever I am required to do while school is "out" (no idea what that will be yet...), I will be freed of the two hours' commuting time so will be able to do a little more around the house.

5:29 pm

We have 568 in the state as of yesterday, and 130+ in my county.

5:30 pm

2 hours?! Oh, I'm sorry. Glad you will have some time to relish.

5:30 pm

Where I live, several, where I teach so far only one. I suspect the count where I teach is actually much higher, but with a low-income population they aren't as likely to seek medical attention.

5:31 pm

Good point -- and with over 80% of the cases being mild, combined with the restrictions on testing, it's likely we have thousands of cases in our area.

5:31 pm

I don't mind the drive usually - I listen to the radio and get to think about things. :-) I am not fond of it when it's snowy or icy, though! It was actually snowing a bit but not sticking today.

5:33 pm

We are actually supposed to have one more day of kids in the classroom (at least that was the plan yesterday when we left); I brought my plants and foods home just in case. I don't know if any kids will even show up. I had a much-reduced class yesterday already.

5:34 pm

Yes, the deadline for schools closing is the 16th, I think. Ours closed last week until at least April 24.

5:35 pm

Oohhh, such sad news about our Ruby....please send her lots and lots of love from moi!

5:36 pm

Stidmama, where in WA do u live? We"re in Moses Lake. We've only had one death in Grant County, but people are going crazy at Walmart and Costco. You'd think it was the Apocalypse!

5:37 pm

I did see the most hilarious cartoon today: two people standing inside a circular tower of toilet paper rolls, and the one guy says, "That will coronavirus out!"

5:38 pm

I live on the Salish Sea, Kotah, I teach on the coast. My inlaws are in the tri-cities. I went shopping on Thursday after school at Costco (we were actually due for our bi-weekly supply run), and it wasn't horrible. Some items were completely gone, others were low, but the people were being polite and helpful, and patient. SO patient! Long lines at checkout, but everyone being kind and gentle.

5:40 pm

I hope and pray that lasts, stidmama. It's the same here - everyone is bonding together. There's a new group of volunteer stay-at-home moms willing to provide childcare since the kiddos are suddenly out of school. We have volunteers who post on our community facebook page that they will run errands for seniors or health-compromised people who shouldn't leave the house. It's so beautiful.

5:41 pm

I stand corrected -- new stats - 642 confirmed cases as of today.

5:42 pm

I am so glad you have a good community, ch! Ours is similarly supportive - on our little peninsula it seems we are fairly isolated until something happens and then everyone comes out of the woodwork and pulls together. We'll make it through this.

5:43 pm

That's so good to hear. Our neighborhood has banded together too just like ch1212. Ch1212, a

5:43 pm

We all will, indeed. {{ sending hugs from a safe six feet .... okay, virtual hug }} stay healthy.

5:43 pm

Hi Stids - haven't see you n a while.

5:44 pm

People are organizing here in the neighborhood to help folks whoa re more vulnerable - picking up prescriptions, grocery shopping, etc.

5:44 pm

ch1212, where are you in WA?

5:45 pm

hey origami - I have been lurking a lot the last couple months. But since I am apparently on extended work from home, I am back for my socialization "fix" ;-)

5:45 pm

yes, (((safe hugs))) LOL

5:47 pm

Is your school shutting down? It's happening here (but I understand they are only closing for 3 days to disinfect the campuses).

5:51 pm

Origami, Nice to hear that people in your community are organizing to help those who need help.

5:52 pm

It is nice. I live near a very poor neighborhood that is a food desert, so I expect there to be quite a few people needing groceries (not wanting to ride buses).

5:54 pm

All schools in Washington are closing (last possible day for classes is the 17th), no exceptions. Oregon will also be shutting down for a while. My understanding is that most districts are going to try to continue to provide lunches to kids who need them, but the actual delivery methods are still up in the air.

6:05 pm

Could I have the stats for the n in the first column please?

6:05 pm

ne 4/6 and ne 6/27....both related...

6:06 pm

I'm glad some areas are making arrangements for kids in need to be fed.

6:06 pm

Thanks pen got them

6:14 pm

yw...

6:30 pm

i am done....heading out....goodnight all....

6:39 pm

sweet dream penquis

stiddy

6:44 pm

hello TO! how's life back there?

It's ok. closing up for a couple of weeks gives time to pause, and reflect. as well as do the yardwork, etc.

how are you? it sounds just awful out of control there.

6:46 pm

642 positive cases in my state... up to 40 deaths. :-( I worry because stidkid#2 is working as a security guard in a low-income healthcare clinic near the worst-hit areas.

as a matter of fact, i should contact my cousin in vancouver.

6:47 pm

So far Tom and I are doing okay, he has what appears to be a cold, but I am checking his temp regularly just to be sure. I won't go back to school on Monday (the last day for kids) if his temp goes above 100 this weekend.

6:47 pm

Tom just called his dad on the other side of the state.

i can understand your concern. i was at an event where someone who was asymptomatic later tested +. Phila health dept says risk is low. 5 more days to go for the all clear.

oh yes, how are they? It's been so long

i am almost afraid to ask.

6:49 pm

They are okay - his mom's in a dementia place now, which was a wrenching (but necessary) decision. His dad is good. But they are well over 80 so we worry about them.

6:49 pm

thanks for asking

i am so sorry. i liked gmere

6:50 pm

My parents are both well - no illness, and are self-isolating for now so they stay that way.

6:50 pm

Gmere (my mom) is fine! :-)

my brother and family are one town over from NJ epicenter.

6:50 pm

oh, you must be concerned for them!

i am keeping busy, spending time outdoors, trying to eat well and get enough sleep to keep my health up.

6:51 pm

Hello... Ooooh we’re on lockdown here. They just announced this evening that everything is shut except for pharmacies, food shops, petrol stations and newsagents (mainly because they’re the ones who sell cigarettes here, I think).

thank god my SI is no longer in chemo i would be frantic

6:51 pm

Hello buggie, my Tom was just telling me about that --- at least you'll still be able to get food.

same here. but the bars are open.

i wish you the best, bug.

6:52 pm

Good idea, TO -- glad to hear your SI is past chemo -- hope all will be well

6:52 pm

hi stiddy, hi all

6:52 pm

help with sa5/12 pls

the gyms are closed. i wonder if i get a refund? i miss the gym.

6:53 pm

((((safe hugs for peri)))) hello all

6:53 pm

I don't have that one yet peri

6:53 pm

thanks. no bars, no restaurants, no cinemas, no nothing. A huge portion of the population is suddenly without work. And lots more have to stay at home because they have kids and there’s no more school...

so nice to see you, stid.

yes, i am voluntering with my county for a safety net agency. seniors who used to go to the senior center for meals now must have them delivered and drivers are needed.

6:54 pm

I think it means salty, peri? ends like an adjective

6:55 pm

ok looking

6:55 pm

found it ty stiddy

a way to keep busy in a good way.

6:56 pm

:-) happy to help peri

6:56 pm

down to 68. Need an eyeball break. Be well all -- (((more safe hugs)))

6:56 pm

*poof*

6:56 pm

Could I please have clues for wa6,42 and mi,24.

there's still a ned to feed kids who qualify for free lunches, even thought schools are closed.

this grid is endless. time to finish or gie up,

before i do, is there a post i can look for to get news of Ruby?

7:00 pm

Post from Rose

7:00 pm

grannyrose good morning everyone. sad news about our beloved ruby. she has become too weak to move from her bed. she tells me she thinks she has 6-12 months. she is unable to communicate properly too. if you have her email please don't expect an answer.

7:01 pm

Good morning all

ty, liz. i take it she is still at home?

7:02 pm

As far as I know. Back in a minute - need to put some sheets on to wash.

7:09 pm

Tough grid.

longest 219 words ever

7:20 pm

Ruby wrote to me a couple of days ago that she is on hospice at home now. So, at least people are coming in daily and she has some much-needed support.

7:20 pm

13 left - all 5s and 6s. Resorting to morewords. Too frustrating now not to finish.

7:21 pm

How is the capital city of France a word? Even the dictionary shows it as a proper noun in every definition!

7:22 pm

I know - Enable is what it is!

7:35 pm

Fireworks - thanks to cluers, Lickety and Morewords. Good luck everyone. BBL>

up 7 pls?

8:00 pm

Clue for up7,36 please

8:01 pm

It's something you walk on...usually plural.

8:01 pm

how you get to the second level bedroom

8:01 pm

I'd like to register a complaint about that one too...!!!

8:02 pm

you are preachin' to the choir here champ

thank you. and good night!

8:03 pm

Yw...congrats!

8:05 pm

Ty champ....think I tried everything but that

8:06 pm

Because it makes no sense! So dumb....

8:06 pm

<is chopped liver

8:07 pm

:)

8:11 pm

Pretty sure looks I'm not going to get this game finished

8:12 pm

Hard enough on my pc,really hard on tissue

8:12 pm

Not sure if I will either...

8:12 pm

Tablet

8:17 pm

You have tissue Suzee? :D

8:17 pm

Typo,lol

8:20 pm

:D

8:36 pm

cooee. home again. i see that people have caught my news on Ruby. i will repeat my offer here. if anyone would like to send a message to Ruby, you can send it to me first. i will then forward all the messages to Ruby as one email. sort of like a big Thinking of You card from the Babble community.

8:36 pm

All hail Morewords! FW. See you all tomorrow.

8:41 pm

Sorry to hear about Ruby.

8:42 pm

it's very sad , Mixi, but not unexpected. at least her pain is under control now.

8:51 pm

It infuriated me that she wasn't getting the pain relief (or assistance) she needed! I am very glad she is on hospice at home now.

8:53 pm

agreed ori. the number of times i wished, and still do, that i could just walk out of here and be there with her.

8:53 pm

at least i got to visit with her three years ago. i am so glad i did so.

9:05 pm

Thanks for being the intermediary, grannyrose.

9:12 pm

np's bugs. i will keep checking in and gathering messages. i can cut and past messages left here too.

9:12 pm

I sent one to your email.

9:13 pm

I am sure the Hospice workers will read them for her. They should provide some comfort from a distance.

9:16 pm

DH has suggested i print them all too and send a hard copy to her as well. just in case.

9:16 pm

That's a good idea, rose. I would suggest printing them in very large font, as that is how she communicates these days.

9:24 pm

So now there are folks in my neighborhood asking online for baby wipes because the stores are "wiped" out. Geesh, people. Leave the baby wipes for people with babies.

Hmmmm . . . wonder how people wiped babies before 'baby wipes' came along?

9:28 pm

With a wash cloth no doubt. The same folks are asking for old towels to make them. It's just ridiculous that people are buying them up.

I was being sarcastic. No baby wipes is such a First World problem.

9:32 pm

I am up to my neck in first world problems :D

LOL Chill out, relax.

9:50 pm

hello all

9:52 pm

yo mama !! how you be, honey? i saw you are stuck at home.

9:53 pm

I am well, gr, thanks! Please add my love to that of everyone for Ruby.

9:53 pm

n's honey.

9:54 pm

and done. xox

9:54 pm

I am already boooooored, and it's only the first day. Just envisioning the 6 weeks of being at home. *sigh* Hoping none of it will include health issues so that we can venture out in support of others sooner than later.

9:54 pm

YAY gr!

9:55 pm

six weeks? are you in WA state?

9:55 pm

yes hursy

9:55 pm

And teaching so my kiddos went home Friday thinking they would see my on Monday but I am not so sure they will...

9:56 pm

i kind of doubt that stid

9:56 pm

hey ruru

9:56 pm

the latest is that the more sunshine and fresh air you can get, the better it is for you. like that is new !! they treated victims of the spanish flu like that and apparently they recovered very quickly.

9:57 pm

hey my man, ruru.

9:57 pm

LOL true! and when spring arrives (it snowed a little today) then I will be outside as much as possible

9:58 pm

hi gr

9:58 pm

so sorry to hear about hospice for ruby, but i've been expecting it i guess

9:58 pm

our churches are still open but there is to be no after service cuppa. just out the door ASAP. and the vicar is not allowed to be assisted at all when it comes to the eucharist.

9:59 pm

i have no idea what that means GR.. i'm not religious

9:59 pm

the local church is doing video church, no parish people.

9:59 pm

yes, ruru. did you see i am collecting any well wishes to send in one email to her?

9:59 pm

Canceling coffee hour means it's serious, ruru...

10:00 pm

yes.. i saw that earlier Gr..

10:01 pm

i have a sickness, fever and aches and cough, but of course no real way to know if it is IT or a flu or what. i did have a flu shot in the fall but someone earlier said they heard it may not have been on target for the strains we ended up having or something

10:01 pm

ruru, the after service cuppa gives the congregation a chance to catch up with one another. we have a tea or coffee, and there is usually finger food to share. but as food can become easily contaminated our hierarchy have ruled we are not to do that for the time being.

10:02 pm

If they test for flu and it isn't, then it's likely the new virus. If it is flu, then you can get antiviral support...

10:02 pm

i read 80% of people with IT, have only a mild case.

10:02 pm

hurshy, can you be checked and soon?

10:02 pm

I am sorry you are ill hurshy -- I had the flu earlier this year despite being vaccinated, but it was over a little earlier than I expected so I think I had partial immunity.

10:03 pm

well it's saturday so i didn't do anything about it. my doctors won't be open til monday and i def wasn't feeling up to driving farther away for any reason

10:03 pm

But it sucks if you're in the other 20%. Granny, please send my love to Ruby in your message. She and I hit it off a while back. Hospice at home can actually help her feel better and DO better. So I'm glad to hear although of course sorry for the reason.

10:04 pm

i am not old or immuno-compromised so i'm not fearing for my life or anything

10:04 pm

i am one of the fortunate few. every time i have the flu vax it boosts my immune system to the point where i don't even catch a cold any more. haven't done so for nearly 20 years.

10:05 pm

i never get sick, but i did get sick twice last year.. so i'm not sure what i've been doing wrong

10:06 pm

and done Natasha

10:06 pm

i have a second source of stress going on so that's just a little hard

10:06 pm

It was the same when I got the flu, hurshy -- Tom was out of town the first few days so by the time there was someone who could have driven me in it was too late for the antiviral and I was getting better.

10:06 pm

I am sorry you are stressed out hurshy

10:07 pm

I think I had a cold last year. never had the flu.

10:08 pm

stress can be such a huge contributing factor to magnifying ailments. it is actually the underlying cause of all my anaphylactic reactions.

10:08 pm

i caught viral bronchitis on an airplane some asshole was coughing and hacking on the plane right behind me all flight

10:08 pm

i don't typically get sick much either. did not miss any days of teaching the last two years for illness, only for professional development that was required.

10:09 pm

but this year moving and working as a sub i'm exposed to so many more different kids

10:09 pm

makes sense that i'd be more likely to catch things

10:09 pm

if you are sick.. DON'T FLY.. don't take the trip.. stay home

10:10 pm

Subbing was stressful, I also got sick a lot when I subbed.

10:10 pm

i hear you, ruru. the same thing applies to work, anything really. if you are unwell, and at risk of infecting others, STAY AWAY.

10:11 pm

agreed

10:11 pm

it's odd how many bosses are still being difficult about it "don't come in if you're sick" but also "but if you don't come in we're not paying you" and like idk seem to have still this basic orientation that people who don't work when sick are somehow weak or lazy and just trying to get out of work

10:12 pm

Exactly, ruru. We are ready to self-isolate already. I hope to go in on Monday, but that depends on Tom's allergy/cold not straying into other symptoms

10:12 pm

If he gets worse, then I will assume I need to stay away from everyone, too.

10:12 pm

i thought your schools were closed - ours are for next week but i can't imagine it will last just one week when the quarantine is for 2

10:13 pm

oh for heavens sake, mama, take care of you. have you boosted your own immune system yet? or am i teaching grandma how to suck eggs?

10:14 pm

I am pretty relaxed, HK. It just distresses me when there are people in need. Whether it is first world need or not :D

10:14 pm

hurshy, it's all about slowing the progress of infection to allow the health facilities to cope.

10:14 pm

Our schools are scheduled to be open on Monday (that was what we were told yesterday) but some nearby districts are open only for kids to pick up their personal belongings, so I don't know if things will change.

10:14 pm

amen ori.. if someone needs help.. do it

10:15 pm

gr, I am FINE. I am getting over a sinus infection, but otherwise doing well. Only use the wheelchair at school and when out running errands.

10:16 pm

I am happy to be able to walk around the house freely now.

10:16 pm

i can hardly believe the reports coming out of Italy. i heard that they are only resuscitating those under 60. they say the over 60's have too many co-morbidities and will tax their health care too much.

10:16 pm

I am so very sad about the extremely high mortality rate in Europe. My heart aches for their families and communities.

10:16 pm

wheelchair? WTH?

10:17 pm

my stupid hips, ruru -- too much pain to walk long distances even with crutches.

10:17 pm

oh dear, ruru. you are out of the loop. mama, please bring him up to speed.

10:17 pm

ouch.. so sorry to hear that..

10:17 pm

surgery not an option and with the current health situation I am not making any more appointments in medical settings for a while.

10:18 pm

is it arthritic ?

10:18 pm

good idea, mama. no risk taking, you hear??

10:18 pm

Anyway, I have been a MUCH better (nicer/happier) teacher since I am not in pain, and apparently my students think they have the "cool" teacher because sometimes I pretend I am driving a Lamborghini through the halls.... ;-)

10:19 pm

not arthritis according to the rheumatologist, but only got an MRI in Jan and haven't been able to schedule with ortho again // eventually I suppose it'll get sorted out

10:20 pm

LOL enough about me. What lovely delicacies have you been creating lately?

10:20 pm

now you have the wheelchair, much better to take the time, find out the results when you can later. if it was anythig terrible, the rooms would have contacted you immediately.

10:21 pm

i'm actually looking at property up your way Stid..

10:25 pm

I'm considering moving to Washington also. For people in my income bracket there are some good properties.

10:26 pm

oh, that would be SO nice, ruru (after the pandemic, of course!) I would love to meet you in person. Jillibus thought very highly of you. :-)

10:27 pm

Origami, come on up! We could have extra babble meetups...

10:27 pm

That would be awesome :D

10:29 pm

Oh! just saw this on fb, the Met is going to stream some operas over the next couple weeks. <3 https://operawire.com/metropolitan-ope\nra-to-offer-up-nightly-met-opera-strea\nms/?fbclid=IwAR3GmW0vXXJ-Tgo5N5Og8llHq\nHl39UekddXQL2m5-RsW1I5n8i0PNSD263I

10:29 pm

I remember when you posted on FB that the wheelchair was actually freeing for you. That you felt so much better using it. That was great.

10:30 pm

Oh yes, origami, AND I am getting so strong -- inclines at school that were impossible for me at the beginning of the school year are now quite reasonable. :-) *flexes impressive biceps*

10:31 pm

Go Stids!!

10:32 pm

unfortunately, my hiatus from babble has significantly reduced my brain power....

10:32 pm

Do you look like Rosie the Riveter now?

10:33 pm

No, far too gray and wrinkly!

10:33 pm

Rosie in middle age :D

10:33 pm

(late middle age...)

10:35 pm

By the numbers, I am now a senior :D I actually get discounts. That doesn't really make up for it :D

10:36 pm

WOW! I am impressed. We get calls from senior scams all the time, but that's because they have my Tom confused with an older man of the same name. LOL

10:38 pm

I get stuff in the mail all the time :D Wait until you are over 60. It is relentless.

10:38 pm

Ha

10:38 pm

So true

10:39 pm

I am so glad i got to meet jilli several times. A great woman in everyway

10:42 pm

I would have loved to meet her. She seemed so smart, strong and funny! Her Facebook posts always had me cracking up. Sharp until the end she was.

10:42 pm

She was simply wonderful. I loved how no-nonsense she was, and yet how kind and gentle.

10:44 pm

I really appreciated her love of dogs. I hold in high esteem anybody who really loves dogs.

10:45 pm

Yes. She didn't approve of my poorly-behaved pups, but she loved them anyway and gave me very good advice.

10:46 pm

Sharp doesn’t quite cover it. She had a razor sharp wit

10:46 pm

Everybody loves my poorly behaved dogs. They are old, but very exuberant in their affections.

10:48 pm

Yes, she was Ru.

10:48 pm

My dogs are always rescues... their prior lives an unknown; they come with baggage and since I am not at home all day long it's very difficult to get them properly retrained.

10:50 pm

I always have 'second-hand" dogs. The horses I have had were second-hand also. They were a little more difficult to deal with. I have great respect for animals bigger, more messed up and dumber than I am.

10:51 pm

:-D

10:52 pm

well, I am stuck with 57 words remaining. I am also tired.... so I shall bid you-all adieu for tonight. Be safe, wash your hands, and treat everyone with kindness. *poof*

10:53 pm

Good night, stids. Nice to see you.

10:58 pm

I'm giving up on this grid. Going to go listen to some Led Zeppelin and paint. Take care all.

11:26 pm

Clue for mi5,14 please

11:28 pm

Anyone?

11:38 pm

Suzee024 no definition for MI-5/14, but add a vowel (suffix), and MI-6/24, is noxious effluence!

11:40 pm

Not sure if I understand that

11:42 pm

Um, I'm thinking of nasty mists, hovering over bogs 'n places ...

11:43 pm

Think I have that one

11:43 pm

two mi5/14. first one mi + ch*** is a deep ravine

11:43 pm

It's from the lower M, if that helps?

11:43 pm

Also the first 14 Ptarmigan one

11:44 pm

second mi5/14. mi + h***, pull along

11:45 pm

sorry i realise there are three mi5/14. the third one is mi + ***dle, baby's bed

11:47 pm

It was the second one....ty both....now I can go to sleep
