If we learn nothing else from this virus experience, I hope it is this. Companies need to get real about paid sick leave. Many people go to work sick because they can't afford unpaid time off. And that is a major contributor to how disease spreads.

Even here in France where we do have okay sick leave, there’s a delay where you’re not entitled to anything. For a lot of people that’s 3 days. If you’re off less than that, no paid leave. More than that and those first days aren’t paid.
People seem to have lost the common sense to stay home when they are sick. I see people in the grocery store all the time who are obviously suffering from some respiratory ailment. I always hope it is just allergies.
Many companies do not extend paid leave for 90 days. What? People are supposed to magically not be sick for those 90 days?
Most small businesses are running on thin margins. Where is the money going to come from if you have to pay employees who are too sick to work?
Here it’s social security that pays for sick leave. That’s what it’s there for, taking care of you when you’re ill

The UK is the Same, not sure why everyone is panic buying. Home delivery are still taking place.
Costco had things, but the shelves had an empty look
Home delivery is just as sparse as regular shopping. The people who do the delivering are picking from the same shelves you are.

We have where houses dedicated to online shopper such as Ocado. Amazon also have huge ware houses over the county, Food is still being produced and entering the country, I realy dont understand it.!

I still say, buy a bidet attachment. Loo paper is horribly bad for the planet (they're cutting down virgin forest in Canada to manufacture it) and doesn't even do a very good job!
We spent $50 at Home Depot on a Brondell FreshSpa last year. No electric, no plumber needed. Love it!

It attaches under the toilet seat and you hook it up to the cold (and some models, hot water under the sink if the toilet is close enough). It sprays your bum and has a dial to control temp (if you have hot/cold) and water pressure (some like it gentle, some less so). Basically you take a shower without getting in the shower.
Go on Youtube and search on bidet, or Brondell, or Tushy to see how these things operate.

There are very very fancy whole-seat models with heated seats and lights that play Bach or the Beatles (kidding), but those need electric power and cost $500 or more
Try to get one with dual temp. "Ambient temp" is fine in warmer weather but on a cold morning in January you might prefer to mix in a bit of warm water. However you do need to have your hot water source (sink) close enough to the toilet for that to work.

My mom has COPD. We are very cautious with her around. I have not let her get out in public for over a month just because of the Type A flu. But, she sits outside on days the sun is shining even if she has to wrap in a coat an blanket.

From what I've read from health professionals, it is somewhat worse. But the main problem is that when it gets out of control it overwhelms the area's hospitals. People die because they need ventilators or other lifesaving equipment and there are not enough available. So the idea is to separate people to slow the spread and help the health care system's ability to help those who are sick.
I wonder how many people die every year of ordinary flu and pneumonia without having this pnic
It's a completely new virus, no-one has any immunity to it. The lockdowns are to prevent it spreading so that it doesn't affect older people who will take a more severe form which could be life-threatening.

The real test is going to be getting people to stay home. Most people are used to being constantly on the go. Here, schools and daycare are closed for two weeks. There are going to be a lot of stir crazy kids and parents pretty soon.
My doctors office sent out a notice asking people to call first. They are trying to limit their face to face contact and rightfully so.
They aren't doing face to face until they have reason to think the person doesn't just have normal flu or cold symptoms, which are different - again, to help prevent the system being overwhelmed. If we care about each other, we need to agree to being shut down in every way possible, not to prevent the spread but to slow it to a manageable pace. Most of us will get it, but many more will die if we let it just happen with no controls. I hate my library and my church and many other things being closed, but I'm trying to take the long view.
I think the same thing is happening here - normally one has to make an appointment to get a prescription renewal -- yesterday, I just phoned in and the Doc sent the renewal over to the pharmacy for me

I live on Whidbey Island, WA. We can call local hospital with symptoms, hospital will advise if virus is suspect, then there is a drive thru for the swabbing. Test results 7-10 days
our schools are closed for march break right now and undergoing thorough cleanings -- I wouldn't be surprised to hear at the end of the week that school closures have been extended.

I normally buy only fresh vegetables. But when I went to the store this morning and the fresh produce was depleted (no carrots, no broccoli, no cabbage...the weekend before St. Patrick's Day) I bought some canned and frozen vegetables.
Luckily, when I tried another store, they had cabbage. So we will have corned beef with the usual trimmings on Tuesday.

my concerns about schools closing are what is going to happen to the children qualify for free meals (how/what will they eat) and how are parents going to stay home from work with them (and still get paid) if they can't telework? I think they should be cautious when making the choice to shut down schools and not have knee jerk reactions. We already have (I think) 12 districts in our state that have shut down and 3 cases (last I checked) of the virus statewide. I know that some schools have extended spring break (hopefully for the same reason stated earlier, a good sanitizing scrub of facilities) but I do hope administrators weigh the impacts carefully before making a decision. There a lot of special needs children who will suffer because of knee jerk reactions... *off my soapbox* Thanks for the 411 on Ruby, Soodle. Please share if you hear of any changes. I hope she can pull herself out of her funk but I know when one can't do what they usually do (and feel like poop) it's easy to sit in a corner in the dark...

That is a concern, amelu. Hopefullyt he food banks are stocked up and can fill the needs of the families with school children who rely on school meals.

I have the same concerns Amelu. Employers are not going to pay people for extended periods where their kids have no school and no childcare. The economic impact of that is going to be huge.
Corona Virus is especially dangerous to young children and elderly people. I can see closing down elementary and middle schools. High schools? Not so much.
FMLA is great and all that but one has to use available leave first, then go w/o pay.
States that are deciding to close schools need to take those kids who depend on school food into consideration. But I don't think they did.
No income + no food is going to = chaos sooner than later.
food bank supplies are down here -- people too busy stocking their own larders! Thank goodness for people like Jim Pattison who step up and donate truckloads of food from their stores.

I can speak for Colorado only, but school districts here are offering meals, no vouchers required. They are offered to go and are available by drive-by. Paid sick leave bill had been passed. I'm in the high risk category and my husband, with two blood cancers, in the very high risk category, so I"m deeply grateful for all those observing social distancing, and flattening the curve.

I live on the Salish Sea, Kotah, I teach on the coast. My inlaws are in the tri-cities. I went shopping on Thursday after school at Costco (we were actually due for our bi-weekly supply run), and it wasn't horrible. Some items were completely gone, others were low, but the people were being polite and helpful, and patient. SO patient! Long lines at checkout, but everyone being kind and gentle.
I hope and pray that lasts, stidmama. It's the same here - everyone is bonding together. There's a new group of volunteer stay-at-home moms willing to provide childcare since the kiddos are suddenly out of school. We have volunteers who post on our community facebook page that they will run errands for seniors or health-compromised people who shouldn't leave the house. It's so beautiful.

All schools in Washington are closing (last possible day for classes is the 17th), no exceptions. Oregon will also be shutting down for a while. My understanding is that most districts are going to try to continue to provide lunches to kids who need them, but the actual delivery methods are still up in the air.

i have a sickness, fever and aches and cough, but of course no real way to know if it is IT or a flu or what. i did have a flu shot in the fall but someone earlier said they heard it may not have been on target for the strains we ended up having or something
ruru, the after service cuppa gives the congregation a chance to catch up with one another. we have a tea or coffee, and there is usually finger food to share. but as food can become easily contaminated our hierarchy have ruled we are not to do that for the time being.
If they test for flu and it isn't, then it's likely the new virus. If it is flu, then you can get antiviral support...

I am sorry you are ill hurshy -- I had the flu earlier this year despite being vaccinated, but it was over a little earlier than I expected so I think I had partial immunity.
well it's saturday so i didn't do anything about it. my doctors won't be open til monday and i def wasn't feeling up to driving farther away for any reason
But it sucks if you're in the other 20%. Granny, please send my love to Ruby in your message. She and I hit it off a while back. Hospice at home can actually help her feel better and DO better. So I'm glad to hear although of course sorry for the reason.

i am one of the fortunate few. every time i have the flu vax it boosts my immune system to the point where i don't even catch a cold any more. haven't done so for nearly 20 years.
i never get sick, but i did get sick twice last year.. so i'm not sure what i've been doing wrong

It was the same when I got the flu, hurshy -- Tom was out of town the first few days so by the time there was someone who could have driven me in it was too late for the antiviral and I was getting better.

stress can be such a huge contributing factor to magnifying ailments. it is actually the underlying cause of all my anaphylactic reactions.
i caught viral bronchitis on an airplane some asshole was coughing and hacking on the plane right behind me all flight
i don't typically get sick much either. did not miss any days of teaching the last two years for illness, only for professional development that was required.
but this year moving and working as a sub i'm exposed to so many more different kids
makes sense that i'd be more likely to catch things
if you are sick.. DON'T FLY.. don't take the trip.. stay home
Subbing was stressful, I also got sick a lot when I subbed.
i hear you, ruru. the same thing applies to work, anything really. if you are unwell, and at risk of infecting others, STAY AWAY.

it's odd how many bosses are still being difficult about it "don't come in if you're sick" but also "but if you don't come in we're not paying you" and like idk seem to have still this basic orientation that people who don't work when sick are somehow weak or lazy and just trying to get out of work
Exactly, ruru. We are ready to self-isolate already. I hope to go in on Monday, but that depends on Tom's allergy/cold not straying into other symptoms

hurshy, it's all about slowing the progress of infection to allow the health facilities to cope.
Our schools are scheduled to be open on Monday (that was what we were told yesterday) but some nearby districts are open only for kids to pick up their personal belongings, so I don't know if things will change.

gr, I am FINE. I am getting over a sinus infection, but otherwise doing well. Only use the wheelchair at school and when out running errands.
I am happy to be able to walk around the house freely now.
i can hardly believe the reports coming out of Italy. i heard that they are only resuscitating those under 60. they say the over 60's have too many co-morbidities and will tax their health care too much.
I am so very sad about the extremely high mortality rate in Europe. My heart aches for their families and communities.

Anyway, I have been a MUCH better (nicer/happier) teacher since I am not in pain, and apparently my students think they have the "cool" teacher because sometimes I pretend I am driving a Lamborghini through the halls.... ;-)
not arthritis according to the rheumatologist, but only got an MRI in Jan and haven't been able to schedule with ortho again // eventually I suppose it'll get sorted out

My dogs are always rescues... their prior lives an unknown; they come with baggage and since I am not at home all day long it's very difficult to get them properly retrained.
I always have 'second-hand" dogs. The horses I have had were second-hand also. They were a little more difficult to deal with. I have great respect for animals bigger, more messed up and dumber than I am.
